UPDATE: Vic Wulsin stopped by to say hello – join us in the comments…
Everyone I know who knows him tells me Washington Post commentator Chris Cillizza is a swell guy. I believe it. But it doesn’t make him any more perceptive in a job that calls on basically one thing: perceptivity. Yesterday he posted his list of the 50 districts most likely to change hands on Tuesday. And in a year when Democrats are likely to sweep the (substantially expanded) playing ground, Cillizza’s pick of #1 district to change hands– so the whole reportage looks more Inside-the-Beltway Balanced– is one held by nominal Democrat Tim Mahoney (FL-16).
First of all, good riddance to Tim Mahoney. I wish he could take his liege lord, Rahm Emanuel with him into obscurity but it’s far more likely that he’ll go back to being an open Republican like he was his whole life until 2006. And, yes, he will lose his battle for re-election.
Looking over Cillizza’s list though– and I’m not denying that he’s a swell guy– makes me think of another swell guy, the top music critic for the biggest newspaper in the city I once lived in. I was running a small, indie record label at the time and the critic came late to a concert that one of the bands on my label was opening. He asked me how they did and I told him they were effin’ stupendous. In the next morning’s review he said they were "effin’ stupendous."
I may be misremembering the exact words but I’d bet anyone that list was put together by Cillizza with the… um… help, of the DCCC, the NRCC and the lame rear view mirror Beltway prognosticators who always come late to the party and who influence, and are influenced by, the other two. Many of his individual analyses are spot on– although the DCCC tried selling me the exact same self-serving one for Carol Shea-Porter that he uses– his rankings, though, look more like a balancing act with an eye on his sources’ sensibilities than on an honest, or accurate assessment of the races.
That said, let’s take a look at one of the races his sources have persuaded him to move up the list dramatically: Larry Kissell (NC-08), who goes from #34 to #25. "In 2006," he writes, "Rep. Robin Hayes (R) beat unknown Democrat Larry Kissell by 329 votes. Two years later Kissell is back and far better organized and funded. And, in a district where one in every four voters is black, Barack Obama’s presence at the top of the ticket should help Kissell. A bellwether race to keep an eye on."
At Blue America we decided keeping an eye on it didn’t suit our purposes. As I mentioned on Thursday at a story on how the Inside the Beltway Democratic Establishment is cynically using the "free trade" issue to win votes while already plotting to betray the voters they are wooing, Larry Kissell is not a man that will ever be brow-beaten by some corrupt corporate shill like Rahm Emanuel into selling out his constituents’ interests. For North Carolina voters, dramatically hurt by the job-killing trade policies of Bush and Emanuel, "fair trade" is a do-or-die issue.
Blue America decided to run a few thousand TV ads in North Carolina that addresses the issue head on. Take a look at the ad which, I’m told, has been hard to avoid for anyone in the district who watches cable TV:
While Jacquie was busily buying up every single available spot that Elizabeth Dole hadn’t already grabbed for her ad accusing Kay Hagan of being "godless," she came up with another idea. "Why not run the ad on broadcast TV?" she suggested. She managed to get us a great deal for a few Sunday NASCAR and college football spots on ABC-TV. I hear a lot of people in NC-08 watch those programs.
Blue America also bought TV spots– different ads– to remind people what awful representatives Dave Reichert, Mean Jean Schmidt, Dana Rohrabacher, David Dreier, Charlie Dent, Joe Knollenberg and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen have been. We were depressed when we looked at the pricing of ads for NJ-05, where Dennis Shulman is in a close battle with one of the most heinous members of Congress, Scott Garrett. Look at the confirmation we got in the mail for a few of the spots we ran in Mean Jean Schmidt’s district just east of Cincinnati:
A 30 second spot on CNN costs $20 between 7pm and midnight and between 9am and 4pm, it’s $13. NJ-05 is in the most expensive media market in the country. A single 30 second spot for Dennis on CNN between 6pm and midnight costs $2,167 (and between 10AM and 6pm, $1,084).
Yesterday Chris Van Hollen, chair of the DCCC was campaigning in New Jersey with Dennis and was awestruck by the palpable enthusiasm for our candidate there on the grassroots level. He pledged $83,000 in radio ads on the spot. That’s the maximum amount the DCCC can coordinate through a state party. It still doesn’t come close to those million and a half dollar TV buys the DCCC is doing for the anti-choice reactionaries they seem so comfy with in the old slave holding states, but it’s so cool that they give a little somethin’ to the progressives too.

Better Democrats!
Hey Howie!
Thanks for the last minute donations to the Blue America PAC this week, especially all those contributions that have been pouring in for our little effort to let Republican voters in CA-26 know who David Dreier really is– almost $15,000 in 4 days. We’ll see if it can help Russ’ incredible GOTV operation close the gap.
Fascinating last minute polls. Several races will depend on turnout. Make it happen people!
What a fantastic crop of Blue America House candidates this year, Howie. I’m pleased to have sent every one of them a little money once, and some a wee bit twice.
I can’t imagine what possesses voters to send idiots like Schmidt, Goode, McCaul, and Garrett back to Washington over and over — aren’t they the least bit embarrassed?
Anyway, thanks to you and the Blue America team for all your hard work this year, and best wishes for a wonderful and startlingly successful Election Day.
I believe the DCCC must be funneling lots of money into the race in Ms. Guess they want the win for bragging purposes because the Dem, Musgrove, is anti-choice and pro gun. Same old, same old.
Unfortunately, I think with folks like McCaul, Mean Jean, and Goode (and most of the rest), they really do tend to be fairly representative of their districts.
Plus, their constituents tend to not really know all the issues they get screwed by their Representatives.
well spit,we gotta be fair and balanced ,so the MURDOCH DYNASTY,retains their tax breaks…6 kids 3 marriages
Tanks, Howie! (Um, I mean THANKS!)
I was just on the phone with an NBC reporter who is doing a story on the David Dreier flier. Oy!
Good news though– one of our candidates, one of our favorite candidate– will be joining us here in 30 minutes for the last hour of this session.
Thanks so much for all your hard work Howie and especially a shout-out to Jacqui.
Hang on, should be a crazy day on Tuesday.
Poor Jacquie! Here internet is down and she’s going bonkers! But she did the most incredible job on the Kissell-Hayes race– the kind of thing a media agency would either never do or, maybe do for $25,000. All the national spots were booked solid and Jacquie went to the locals to buy what amounts to remnant space. We bought everything that was available in NC-08– and we even got a bargain rate thanks to her!
Cilliza is swell alright. A swell corporate hack. Other than be a lazy sell out, he’s swell.
Does anyone have any specific plans for election day? Anyone doing GOTV activities?
I used to always drive the elderly to the polls but they always wanted me to take them shopping after. Now I just sit and bite my nails and blog.
As a footnote, and a former Bay Area resident, I remember the rock critic. He was indeed a swell guy, and took much help from his fellow critics, and the comparison to Cillizza is apt. Said critic was friends with the management of Huey Lewis and Journey, so those acts continued to get ink long after music had moved somewhere else.
Good guess!
Here in NM-1 Darren White’s ads are truly disgusting. I’m glad to see some opposition.
Looks like Howdy Doody is already distancing himself from McCain and getting behind the Rising Tide on the far right. Scuttlebutt is that Putnam will be one of the congressional scapegoats for expected GOP losses on Tuesday. He seems to be getting into bed with Palin.
I was going to guess too — not MS.
Yeah, later this afternoon, I have a list at DWT of the worst Republican sleazemeisters of the cycle– almost every one of them is losing by the way– and Darren White is high on the list. I’m so glad Martin Heinrich looks like he’s taking that seat. He’ll make an exceptionally good congressman.
I think he will be too, praying for a clean sweep here in NM. I think we may have it.
i’m wanting to take pizzas down to the lines, IF i can swing it financially. i intend to hit up the pizza places for a discount. don’t know if it’ll work, but i’m gonna try.
I just sent Eric Massa a little extra. Thank you Howie for everything you have been doing.
Obscure references aside, the comparison to Daily Newspaper rock critics is actually quite apt. It used to be if you live in the suburbs, or you weren’t old enough to go to bars, the only way to find out about new acts was through rock critics. You couldn’t hear them on the radio, often you couldn’t even find the record, so you’re only insight was through “gatekeepers.” The daily critic went to way more shows than any normal human, so their insights were one of the few chances you had to learn anything at all. Now, of course, you can click on band’s websites (or Amazon) and sample music and do whatever you like, but it weren’t like that then. Punditry is still punditry, regardless of the the subject.
I think you’re right. And I hope Tom Udall can have a good influence on his… “moderate” cousin from Colorado.
GREAT idea!
Thanks, a lot Howie, any plans to be Treasury Secretary after the election?
Seriously, I know you can do a better job than Henry Paulson!
I don’t know about that – he hasn’t been able to be a moderating influence on his cousin in the House nor on his cousin in the Senate so far.
Looks like Eric’s going to win this year. It will be great to never hear from Kuhl again. I suspect Eric is going to be a really phenomenal public servant. He has his head screwed on right and I don’t expect to agree with him on every single issue every single time, but he will certainly go about trying to figure out what’s best from all the right perspectives. He’s serious about wanting to serve the interests of working families instead of big corporations.
LOL!!! Jane must be rolling her eyes wondering why I’m late with a Blue America financial report again!
Hell YES:
The Obama campaign gleefully sends over an announcement of a major endorsement…. for John McCain… by Dick Cheney.
“In three days we’ll choose a new steward for the presidency and begin a new chapter in our history,” the Vice President said Saturday morning. “It’s the biggest decision that we make together as Americans. A lot turns on the outcome. I believe the right leader for this moment in history is Senator John McCain.”
Dana Rohrabacher has been wrong about virtually everything he’s ever said in public, especially his fawning support for the Taliban. But I’m hoping that what he said yesterday is correct– and the last public pronouncement any newspaper feels they need to cover.
I’ve heard of phoning in a review, but phoning OUT for one?
I’d have killed to get that particular critic to one of my shows back in the day… must have been nice to have him ask how your act did and print your response…
You’re really doing an awesome job, Howie…
Our guest today is Vic Wulsin and she’s having some trouble logging on. Is there someone who can help her? (I’m lucky that Jane fixed this thing so it does it for me automatically or I’d never be able to get on either.)
the box office staff at shoreline amphitheatre would make bets what time this Rock Critic would show up to pick up his tickets.
15 minutes into the headlining act was always a money winner.
So glad to see the Kissell stats; supported him last year and again this time. Thank you, Howie, for all you’ve done to improve the chances of *real* progressives, especially in NC. Goodness knows we need ‘em! Now, if we could just get rid of foxx.
I’m so transparent
Hey Everyone!
Yes, let’s get Larry safely settled into his seat and then deal with Foxx in 2010
Vic, welcome back to Firedoglake. Thanks for taking some time out at the last minute to join us so close to voting day. You’ve been one of Blue America’s most loved candidates for 3 years. In fact, can you tell us what’s different about this race and your campaign in 2006. Are the issues the same? What are you hearing from voters?
We’re working with the staff
Welcome!
How do things look from your level?
(I try to follow the coverage in the Cincinnati Enquirer but they are lacking in a lot of ways)
Bless you, Matt — I’ve been feeding both Erics this season – but Eric Massa is going to make a terrific replacement for Randy Kuhl.
Great. Thanks for having me back Howie.
For those who don’t know, my district stretches from eastern Cincinnati all the way over to the foothills of Appalachia in Pike and Scioto Counties.
Even though the district is so diverse, wherever I go people tell me that they just don’t think anyone in Washington represents them anymore. More than any other issue, people in the second district want a representative who will be accountable to them, and most importantly a representative who will tell the truth.
On the issue side, of course our economic crisis is on everyone’s minds. Good jobs are leaving Southern Ohio and families are struggling just to get by.
Vic, I’ve been ranting and raving for the last 2 weeks about how the DCCC is mostly helping the most reactionary candidates on the Red to Blue list, including a bunch of anti-choice fanatics. I did see that they finally stepped up to the plate for you though. Thank God. Is it enough to make a difference?
dakine01,
Things look great. Right now our campaign headquarters is buzzing with activity. We have hundreds of staff and volunteers making phone calls, knocking on doors, and, of course, raising some last minute money.
My family is in that neck of the woods (Darke and Butler ctys) Just how bad is the economy?
Well, Howie to tell you the truth, we always knew that we would have to do most of the work to defeat Jean Schmidt on our own.
I’ve seen reports that the DCCC has put upwards of $780,000 on television. That’s from the independent side, so I don’t know much about how that money is being used.
What do you make of Schmidt’s last minute negative attacks on your record as a doctor? She’s running one of the most negative and vicious campaigns of any incumbent this year– right up there with Bachmann and Dole and Garrett.
Welcome, Vic!
I had a blast placing ads for you (against Mean Jean) on Saysme.Tv, and am rooting for you all the way.
wwroda,
I have all or parts of Hamilton, Clermont, Warren, Brown, Adams, Pike and Scioto Counties in my district.
In the eastern counties like Pike and Scioto, the real struggle is creating good jobs. It’s difficult to attract big employers to make up for the jobs that have been shipped overseas to places like China and India. I would like to create a “Made in America” tax credit to create some incentives for companies to move jobs there.
Southern Ohio is also experiencing record numbers of home foreclosures, which has ripple effects throughout our communities. Not only are middle-class families losing their homes, but property values are going down and abandoned homes can be a nuisance and become magnets for crime.
I wanted to say, I support any tax policy that would create manufacturing jobs in America. I can not buy a single computer hardware product made in America. Even the local semicondutor plant shutdown, 400 good paying jobs.
Vic,
My dad is from Middletown, is the Mill still going strong. I was about the only non-service industry there, IIRC?
Jean Schmidt’s latest ads are reckless, but they are really a sign that her campaign is in trouble. It’s funny that one week before she launched these TV ads, she said in a televised debate that she had decided to run a ‘positive’ campaign on the issues that matter most. That pledge didn’t last long.
By the way, these ads are nearly identical to ones that were run against me in the primary. My former opponent in that race has not only endorsed me, he has said that he now agrees those claims have no merit.
It’s funny that you mention those other candidates who made similar attacks. I think many agree now that those attacks backfired on them, just as I think they will on Jean Schmidt.
It will be important to assist the ACLU in getting Obama to respond positively to this initiative. Obama did not respond well to the FISA debacle. Here is another test for the constitutional specialist, and one that can be monitored and assessed as soon as his administration begins.
ACLU Releases Presidential Transition Plan to Restore Civil Liberties
NMMagyar,
Middletown is in Warren, but just outside my district.
Do your constiutents know that Bush has increased the size of the Federal Government more than any President, and Schmidt has helped all the way. What did we get for that money, besides Medicare, Part D?
Vic, before we let you get back to campaigning answer another question– for those of us who live far away from your district, how can we help in these final days?
Hi Dr Wulsin! You are the Blue America candidate I have the most hope for — our new Congress is going to need all the health care expertise we can muster in order to fix our broken system. Your opponent, of course, is a shameful example of public disservice.
Has she completely recovered from her “accident?” What a publicity stunt that seemed like from afar — getting on a plane and having to be mended in a hospital that should have been able to devote all its resources to our war wounded, not a Congresswoman who couldn’t even tell she had broken ribs!
Thanks again for all you have done. I’m proud to have supported you.
Sandmand, I’m glad you mentioned Medicare Part D.
If we could negotiate with drugs companies, seniors who use Medicare would be able to get the medicines they need at a much lower costs. I’ve talked to seniors who are forced to decide whether to pay for their medicine or buy food. Outrageous.
As a doctor, this is particularly frustrating. Medical science has come so far in treating life-threatening diseases and we have medicines that are more effective and treat a wider range of illnesses than ever before. What good are those drugs if we can’t find a way to get them to the people who need them most?
The pharmaceutical companies basically wrote Medicare Part D. It may work well for the drug companies, but the people of Southern Ohio deserve a representative who will be accountable to them.
Butler
Thanks, I knew that’s what my dad’s license plate said
Great question Howie!
We have a computer program that will allow people from anywhere in the country to make calls to get our voters out to the polls. All you need is a phone and a computer. To get hooked in, call my volunteer coordinator, Cheryl Crowe at 513-233-4180 or email to volunteer@wulsinforcongress.com
And of course, we need all the help we can get to beat back Jean Schmidt’s attack ads. You all know how to get to the Blue America page and you can give directly to my campaign here.
Thanks so much for having me here today
I need to get back to work for the people of the Ohio’s second district!
Thanks for being here
Thank you for taking the time from a busy schedule to talk with us again.
Good luck and let’s hope Mean Jean is giving her concession speech along about 9PM Tuesday night to an empty ballroom.
Thank you for visiting today, Doc, and good luck to you and your wonderful team on Tuesday.
Thanks, Howie!
