This has been nagging at me: why did McCain have a staged foreign policy event and not have Baker and Eagleburger with him?

McCain tends to be neoconnish, especially his advisors, so why not balance it with folks from the "realist" camp? Also, why were Graham and Lieberman there? Fellow Baghdad bargain hunters, I suppose. And isn’t that FL Gov. Charlie Crist’s perma-tan right behind McCain? The "Hey, look, I got yer governor in a photo-op! Vote for me!" contingent is stoked.

Maybe because it was a tiny, closed to the public event of about 100 GOP supporters, the traveling journo-stenography pool, and the photo-op background folks? (Yes, a closed event in Florida the last week of campaigning. Strategery at its finest.)

And then…suddenly, it clicks:

"Give her some time in the office and I think the answer would be, she will be [pause] adequate. I can’t say that she would be a genius in the job. But I think she would be enough to get us through a four year… well I hope not… get us through whatever period of time was necessary. And I devoutly hope that it would never be tested."

The indictment of Palin was all the more biting because both she and McCain have held Eagleburger up repeatedly during the past several weeks as evidence that the Republican ticket has firm standing and support within foreign policy circles….

Eagleburger tends to be blunt, and my guess is they didn’t want anyone honest about Team McCain anywhere near the event.  Jim Baker already contradicted McCain on foreign policy, and spoke in glowing terms about what an Obama presidency might mean:

Well, I think electing the first African-American president would send a powerful message not just abroad, but within this country as well. Having said that, I have, of course, endorsed Senator McCain.

"Endorsed" McCain? Not "support." That’s as tepid as the Nancy Reagan "Well, obviously this is the nominee of the party," isn’t it?

Feel the McMentum…

(YouTube — Hilarious "dance off" between McCain and Obama.  The effects in this are pretty good until it gets a little weird at the end.  Enjoy the laugh.)
