Obama told Rachel Maddow last night he thought the Republican Party had been "kidnapped" by "an incompetent, highly ideological" group in the White House. And if there are "moderate Republicans" who feel that way, it didn’t make sense for him to cast his candidacy in conservative vs liberal or even Republican vs Democratic terms.

The Republicans/conservatives might deserve a crushing defeat for their "core hypocrisy" and having trashed the country, but Obama is thinking through to what he’ll need to govern. He wants "a working majority for change." Good luck with that. There may be "reasonable" Republicans somewhere, but there won’t be any in the next Congress. We’ll see where he stands next July.

Maddow observed to Olbermann that this non-ideological orientation is probably why many self described "liberals" are not as enthusiastic about an Obama victory as the right might expect. Probably true, but I’m not ambivalent; Obama may be "centrist" but that’s within an era that’s moved much further to the left than almost anytime in my lifetime — thanks to Bush, Cheney and now McCain/Palin — and you can hear that throughout Obama’s interview.

So if next Tuesday night — knock on wood — someone has the honor of introducing Michelle Obama as the "next First Lady of the United States," I know I’ll be cheering and shedding a few tears. No apologies.
