Obama told Rachel Maddow last night he thought the Republican Party had been "kidnapped" by "an incompetent, highly ideological" group in the White House. And if there are "moderate Republicans" who feel that way, it didn’t make sense for him to cast his candidacy in conservative vs liberal or even Republican vs Democratic terms.
The Republicans/conservatives might deserve a crushing defeat for their "core hypocrisy" and having trashed the country, but Obama is thinking through to what he’ll need to govern. He wants "a working majority for change." Good luck with that. There may be "reasonable" Republicans somewhere, but there won’t be any in the next Congress. We’ll see where he stands next July.
Maddow observed to Olbermann that this non-ideological orientation is probably why many self described "liberals" are not as enthusiastic about an Obama victory as the right might expect. Probably true, but I’m not ambivalent; Obama may be "centrist" but that’s within an era that’s moved much further to the left than almost anytime in my lifetime — thanks to Bush, Cheney and now McCain/Palin — and you can hear that throughout Obama’s interview.
So if next Tuesday night — knock on wood — someone has the honor of introducing Michelle Obama as the "next First Lady of the United States," I know I’ll be cheering and shedding a few tears. No apologies.
In other news:
- "Battleground" states? More like Obama drinks Bush/McCain’s milkshake; Harwood explains McCain’s predicament.
- Gosh, who knew Palin might hurt McCain’s chances?
- Rahmbo leaks to media he wants to run the country . . . um, White House.
- Fox’ Cavuto being mean to McCain?
- That Lindsey Graham; such a kidder.
- Those Texans loves them some Bush — all 34% of them.
- Deregulation worked so well, we should do more.

Nice post. I have been amazed at some of the regular posters here that can’t keep themselves from bitching and whining about Obama even before his is elected.
Well, Barack is definitely doing something right which is what he was saying in his answer that he’s winning. There are going to be a few repubs who may go along with Barack in the hopes of destroying their own jackboot licking voting record of the past 8 years. But, if the Democrats have the majority in the Senate after Tuesday of next week, Barack isn’t going to need those repubs. That said, Barack may have more of a problem with some of the Democrats in going along with him, because as we all know, Democrats are their own worst enemy sometimes! Frustrating as hell, but reality.
There will be Milkshakes!
I’ll be crying right along with you. Tears of relief.
meh, i’ll give em the 100 days to win me over.
I want the hanky concession.
here I sort of disagree
the country now identifies more with the left, it has always been left.
the center of this country is so far left of what the republicans are making it out to be, the center is considered radical to them
so I say the country hasn’t moved to the left, they have only begun to realize the republican party does not represent their belief system
Good morning all. We’ve got Blue Texan in the backroom nursing a cold this a.m., so we’re soakin him in a tub of Alka Seltzer. As soon as he’s all fizzed up, he may be back later.
As for those bitching, whining bloggers, I can’t imagine who you mean. It’s called constructive criticism. We are a strange group.
It’s probably because I’m not sleeping well these day, but I’m confused about the Milkshakes.
Will some kind pup explain this to me? Thanks in advance.
When it is constructive criticism that’s what it is.
I agree, he’s gonna have to prove to me that he knows the REAL center, it’s NOT in the middle between republicans and democrats, democrats are already too far right of center then this country needs to be
as far as the first 100 days?
there will be no honeymoon, bush and hanity will make absolutely certain every single thing obama and the democrats do becomes the brunt of their jokes
if obama is to have a succesfully percieved presidency he is gonna have to reinitiate a fairness docrtine
no douby about that
I keep hearing anecdotes from friends that their R friends are voting Obama, they are so ashamed & upset with their party.
I think we’re much more left than when it was “morning in America.” Basic attitudes may be more or less stable, as you suggest, but how people respond differs. During the Reagan years, people seemed more susceptible to reptilian nonsense, packaged as happy talks. Now they see that the last 8 years of happy talk was reptilian nonsense, as though they see it for the first time.
The way I read the Maddow interview is, she’s asking, why aren’t you tryin to crush these jerks? And he’s saying, that’s not who I am. The rest is rationalization, but he probably really believes that. Most of us think he’ll be disabused of this, with McConnell, Boehnrer and Gingrich et al being as big a jerks as they always were. Like I say, we’ll see what happens in July.
Good Morning Scarecrow,
nice to have you with us so early (feel better ((Blue Texan)) )
ok, so let’s go with the Rahm as WH Chief of Staff, am assuming Tammy Duckworth would be appointed to his seat – so what does that do to House Leadership line up ? who would then chair the House Caucus ?
Scarecrow, at first I thought you name on this post at 8:00 am was a trick but it’s not. It’s a treat to see you in the morning again.
Citizen Raven:
“…regular posters here that can’t keep themselves from bitching and moaning about Obama even before he’s elected.”
Yeah, Freebird,I gave a little “attitude adjustment” to a couple a those folks last night while yopu were catchin’ Z’s…but in fairness, a leader with the skills that Obama’s got only comes along once in a couple a generations and the last one we’ve seen in this country died before WWII was over. Folks who are focused on ideology don’t understand that Obama’s ideology is the matrix of ideas that makes semse of his world that is forged by the intersection of history, his intellect and his experience. For many of us, our ideology is the endpoint of purpose of our thought and action…for Obama it’s jest the starting point for his life.
Yeah, as an old left, fascist assassin I get real tired of “liberals” who are so afraid of winnin power that they refuse ta pick it up when it’s offered…with help like that, who needs cancer.
Same here.
I thought his responses to Rachel showed exactly why he is where he is — inches away from becoming POTUS despite having no money (initially), a funny name, and big ears. Why piss off half of the voters when you’re gonna need 5-8% of them to win the election?
No, better to attack their leaders than their party. Once Waxman and Leahy get done with em’ in the next Congress, the stench of Rethuglianism will speak (and smell) for itself.
I believe he’s gonna govern a lot more to the left than most people here think, especially if he gets 60 seats in the Senate. And no, that wasn’t evident in the primaries, but again, he wasn’t running for President of FDL; he’s had to cast a wider net.
I’m with you. There is very little of anything constructive about criticism (judge, blame, censure, condemn – that’s from the dictionary, not me).
In that movie, “There Will be Blood,” the oilman villain, played by Daniel Day Lewis, explains to his hapless neighbor that he doesn’t need to own his property to get at his oil, because his drills have been slanting under the other guy’s property. “I drink your milkshake.”
Fuck em if they can’t take a joke.
And IN ADVANCE!
Hey, I’d be down with competence and sanity for a while. By all means keep his feet to the fire, but center is so much better than wing-nut, it will be a great relief. Once we finally manage to dig our selves out of the giant open pit the Rethugs dug for us, I’ll be more ideological.
i dunno, if his message machine remains strong as it has over the campaign I think he’ll have to the hundred days to layout a game plan and get the message across. The fox news bubble will persist but who really watches fox anyway.
Who knows, maybe he’ll work media fairness into the game plan.
Scarecrow, I’ll concede the tears of joy for Michelle. If Al Franken pulls it off then the faucet may open wider. In the bigger picture, I hope Obama proves me wrong—I really do. Until I see the party I joined when I was old enough to vote return to democratic principles and take their oaths of office seriously—”to preserve protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America from all enemies foreign and domestic” then I will assume that it is business as usual.
Once the election is over, our work begins anew and our focus changes to holding the next batch accountable.
But having Michelle and the girls in the WH will be an occasion for joy.
i sure hope he reads the blogs and sees that they will try to be “bi partisant” by forcing their programs down our throats
I really don’t want him bargaining from a position of weakness or in the spirit of bi partisantship
I want him bargaining in the spirit of undoing the damage that has been done
I do not mind if he gives pork, if he supports their office, so long as they understand the damage that has been done MUST be reversed
Citizen STTPinOhio:
You are right on the money Citizen…and I’m surprised Rachel didn’t pick that up in her one to one…I think she’s holdin’ out for the first legislative session.
Every time I ask my Rethug boss if he’s voting for McSFB all I get is “I’m not telling you who I’m gonna vote for.” I do believe he’s gonna vote for Obama but will never know for sure. My young McSFB supporter is gonna stick with McSFB. He falls into that category that thinks he’s gonna make in excess of $250K every year for the rest of his life. But then he’s pretty shallow and repeats talking points as if he’s done all the research. Sad.
Got it now. Thanks (again) and yes, it is nice to see you in the am, again.
faux news has managed to make people beleive it is a real news program
they even have polls that they say prove they are more ballanced then the other stations
we need a fairness doctrine
I read that his transition team has been working very hard. They’ve been studying FDR’s first 100 days. Just knowing that there may be competence in an Obama adm. gives me hope.
From the front lines of the GOP’s war against the constitution (a polling place in Sunrise Florida – 7:30 a.m.):
No sample ballots? WTF? 15 machines? WTF?
Billions handed out daily to banks, and this country can’t allocate the resources to enable the most important function of a Democracy? The word CONSPIRACY is the only word to use.
Got RICO?
And if we get a blowout, do we finally get rid of Noonan too?
Please!!!
Joe Scar is making sure that after the election he can proudly say “I carried the water until the end!”
He probably also believes that he has not benefitted disproportionally from the “wealthy first” approach of the Republic years.
Off to work. 4 more days.
Druggy won’t like Joe stealing his water-carrier title.
Danny will probably never make that much money. He’s 26, wears nothing but silk, thinks money grows on trees and is already so deep in debt he can’t see straight. $14K diamond engagement ring (took out a loan) while his fiance is a nurse and provides the majority of their income. I didn’t pay that much for my truck, fer cryin’ out loud.
Frankly, I’m encouraged that he’s not claiming any explicit ideology. I’m confident that he has good intentions, is very smart, has the confidence to listen to other viewpoints, and knows enough to select the best among alternative solutions. I believe that he’ll change and adapt to find what works. That’s oversimplified, but suggest a major improvement over what we’ve had and offers hope that we can dig our way out. PLease, no more insistance on sticking to any ideology after all the facts point in other directions. Essentially, he seems to have many of the skills and aptitudes FDR did.
Scarecrow nice post. Been wanting to see both Rachel Maddow and Barack Obama. Isn’t his church homophobic? And Obama talking like the winner is closing out the deal…the assumptive secondary close.
More consensus on some big public works project energy, transportation water wastewater are good drivers of econ with big payrools to spend for workers and big bankrolls for industry is strong and real recession medicine, Sounds politically doable too. Outlaw hedge funds and clamp down on leveraging…regulate the Casinos on wall street that ripped us off.
A Dem friend was telling a very loyal R that under Obama’s plan he would get more back in taxes unless he made $250 thou & the R said, “I might make that someday”.
There seems to be a fantasy among some R’s that if they hang in there the Republican way will eventually make them well off & that hope has lived through 2 to 3 generations in R families. The GOP does a great job of catapulting the propaganda.
Hi Scarecrow. I guess I’m always amazed when people are mad because someone refuses to play the same old games. High school. Workplace. Political campaigns. Ideological warfare. Whatever. Some of us do actually find we do our jobs more effectively when we take a different path.
Call me crazy, but I think the Working Majority ideal is a good one. As He said, I’m winning, so we must be doing something right.
I’m reading a biography by James Rogan right now. I’m trying to see how a young Democrat can turn towards Republicanism. Haven’t finished it yet, but I’m really curious.
I too will be crying tears of pure joy seeing the Obama family in the White House, my initial impression of Michele was negative, but I see now how wrong I was.
via calculated risk reader:
Fabulous Graph Depicting Four Market Crashes
why it appears 3.5 of them took place with a Republic in the White House, hmmmm
Ideology or not, it’s disappointing, sad, that Obama didn’t try to help defeat Prop 8 in California. It will take a lot off the night if Obama wins big but that hateful law passes.
Oops, I’m wrong about this. Obama did come out against Prop 8, as commenters below indicate. thanks for the correction. SC
executive power too
Barack a moderate…doing what he thinks he can.

Please serve some cheese with all that wine. S) as in friendly banter..you tough you can handle it just roll with the punch.
no
this has been another episode in “simple answers to complex questions”
lol, just notcied loc.gov has a bot!
here’s the answer to that;
“you are MUCH more likely to “make that someday” under obama’s plan then ANY republican or concervative plan”
bing
heavens, who would have thunk it?
if they have been studying fdr then we really do have hope
and Rachel Maddow is da bomb
bad linky tw3k
The Prop 8 campaign here has caused almost as much distress here in my ‘hood as the presidential campaign. It’s difficult enough to drive through the burned and scorched hills, but then to see all of the Yes on 8 signs just adds insult to injury.
But, last night I went to a group that got together to pray and thank God for none of our houses burning down and I met several No On 8 folks and that was a real treat!
I think Fox will also be revealed to even more people as the “Hey kids, get off my lawn” network.
As the adults get back in charge and the world becomes a better place, it will become even more apparent that Fox is the home of nuts.
Their ratings are slipping, even now. As the economy gets better and Obama restores our image around the world, more people will wonder what the hell are these people so angry about?
The peace or the prosperity? (Taken from Sen. Clinton’s great line in the primaries.)
Another answer is that once you get to $250,000 plus, it doesn’t do you any good if the bridge to you new house just fell down. You’ll curse the fact that the tax increase on the wealthy that would have paid for the repairs got stopped by the morons in Congress yelling “socialist! socialist!”
I think Obama delivers a nice response to the socialist cat calls in that video above. Good use of the Teddy Roosevelt history, being the father of progressive taxation.
I was big pimpin’ Ian’s posts on the subject to Transition Team Leader Podesta while he was here :D
I agree, but think it would be sadder if, once again, a favorite issue of the Neanderthal Republicans resulted in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, etc., falling for McCain in the last few days and saddling the whole nation for four more years.
Yes, classy interview. The funny thing is that Rachel seemed disappointed in the interview, but she shouldn’t be. She got Obama to reveal more of himself on the ideological and socialist arguments than anyone else has. And his discussion of Afghanistan — part II is in Silo — is very good.
wth? 14,000 for a ring? why? especially when you have to take out a loan for it?
I heard her on an interview with ron reagan
she has teh HAWTS for obama (yes, I know)
she said he is MUCH better looking, more impressive, athletic, more confident in person
now I think I have a chance with her!
No, I don’t think you’re crazy. And note that at the very beginning, Barack is careful to point out that right now he is trying to convince Republican voters. He readily admits that the Republican leadership is completely wrong. He’s just saying that part of why he is winning is that he isn’t demonizing those who vote for Republicans. He needs those people for his Working Majority.
Great interview. Thanks for calling attention to it, Scarecrow.
The style difference between Obama and McCain is so striking that it’s hard to imagine anyone voting for McCain. I certainly hope Obama prevails and that the Dems achieve veto-proof control of Congress, although neither of these is a certainty.
But make no mistake. If Obama wins and the Dems gain full control they will be as susceptible to fraud, abuse, and corruption as the Republicans were during the period in which they had control.
Obama does seem like a very thoughtful, intelligent, conciliatory, and principled individual though. Perhaps he would have a mitigating effect on the downward spiral engendered by absolute power.
You’re too subtle for me. Are you suggesting a continuation of the Cheney/Bush accrual of unconsitituional executive power, or that FDR accrued too much and misused it?
@ 48? if so it’s just the bots user agent string.
i figure that i’ll just wait to see what obama actually does before i start complaining. i know it sounds crazy and all but there it is
from Chicago bub
(((demi))) thanks to my lil artistic improvements, the signs either reveal the truth to folks or have been removed. glad to see a few more no on 8 signs while im out driving around
Um, she’s gay.
man, we are all counting our chickens before they hatch
machines are still flipping, lines are still too long, purges are still being attempted, voters are still being intimidated
we have a few days left of vigilance
True, but if it’s wrong for McCain to use racist tactics to try to win, why is is okay for Obama to cling to homophobic attitudes just for political convenience? From a “civil rights” and moral perspective, I don’t see the issues as that different. Necessary evil is just that: arguably “necessary,” but still “evil.” If I were gay, it would feel even worse, I suppose.
yes, I know, didn’t you see my (yes, I know)
anyway, most of the women I date are “teh gay”
she has teh hawts for obama
I know, I know… I spend waaay too much time watching Joe Scar, but have you ever seen when the Nooner thinks she’s said something profound or witty she turns her head to the side (sorta how a dog does when they don’t understand you)?
WTF is up with that?
off to work all, c u L8ter
just saying that FDR was a strong executive and need that strength to implement policy. I’m thinking of it as the bright side of the bush/cheney consolidation of power.
more importantly, she is in a relationship.
if he is elected…there…better?
I didn’t see the homophobic attitude. In his speech, when he’s listing all of the useless, pointless divisions among us, he lists that as being one.
ever writer something you wish you hadn’t?
Okay.. I can’t stretch a single Bush/Cheney thing into a “bright side.” The only semi-resonable policies, like comprehensive immigration policy, failed. Anyway, I understand we agree.
Not in any speech but in his response during the debates to whether he supports gay marriage right. He said no. He’s all for civil equality. He may have said something about leaving marriage equality to states to decide, but I haven’t seen it.
plenty ;)
must see TV

The sun is out strong and I’m working on my second cuppa, so, for the moment, everything has a bright side! Give me fifteen minutes or so ;)
Yea, he should have provided the wingnuts with more ammo, right?
Mornin’, Wobbs. It’s all about image. He wants to show the world that he’s a success and that’s done with things. Expensive things. A year ago he was $25K in debt on credit cards. Fiance put her foot down and they had them paid off couple months ago. I’ve been on him about his spending habits since day one. He admits he likes spending money for nice, useless things. Prolly has 1000 DVDs. Was getting 8-10 a month from NetFlix and burnin’ ‘em. This is a guy who until he had a flat 2 weeks ago didn’t know how to change a tire. Ended up having to call AAA.
LOL
A video for sadlyyes’s first Oxdown diary?
my definition of homophobia is a bit different. it has become a word like ‘racism’ in thst it is just thrown at people as a charge when it simply isn’t the case

Did he come out for Prop. 8?
So, in following your line of reasoning, he should stick his neck out on Prop. 8, and give the wingnuts something else to smear him with in crucial Neanderthal states like mine (which might be the difference between winning and losing, BTW).
Had a very nasty robocall on my answering machine when I got back from phone banking. It talked about Obama legalizing late term abortions which will pierce the skulls ………..
The caller id said “National poler 08″ f**king sleazy a**holes.
wow. he sucks at managing money for sure. i forsee lots of trouble and arguments.

lol!

My understanding was that he and Biden both said that they favored civil union, including all state granted legal rights associated with marriage, but believed the term “marriage” was a religious term and believed it should remain a matter for churches. I’m not thoroughly informed on the issue, but that viewpoint seems alright to me. It’s okay that the state doesn’t decide who is “saved” or “righteous”. I just hate to lose again if the issue is semantics.
brace yourself for worse…at least until election day
LOL. That’s too funny.
I can’t wait to see who the first pundit is to start sucking up to Obama and the Dems should Obama be elected.
wow. it’s raining pretty hard here. bettter get mr out the door
I didn’t know “It’s a Beautiful Day” was from Chicago. I went to high school with Dave “The Hawk” Wolinski (Shadows of Knight) and Addison Al DeCarlo both from Bangor Flying Circus and Madura. Saw Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart at the Electric Theater, The Stones at McCormick Place in 65 and Lou Christie at the Ampitheater. Had to watch the convention from the barracks at Ft Lewis cuz we were shipping out.
i’m waiting to see heads explode. starting with scarborough (tool)
It isn’t. Formed in San Francisco in 1967 by David LaFlamme.
Here is some windex for your chyrstal ball..oh swami…he will turn his turn around his financial plan and learn personal finance their union will grow stronger and a little dragoon will be born and they will live happily evah after. Don’t lay trips on his head.

Seems I’ve often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California
But girl, don’t they warn ya
It pours man it pours.
whew
I think your description of what they believe is correct. And i agree it would have been politically damaging in several states for Obama/Biden to openly opposed Prop 8 — hence my use of the term “necessary evil.” But Prop 8 is designed by hurtful people to hurt other people, to discriminate, and requires a moral response. The civil union position will, I suspect, one day be analogized to “separate but equal.” We apparently are not there yet.
Don’t need a crystal ball for the obvious. If the fiancee has already had to put her foot down because of his bad spending habits and bad debt and he hasn’t learned from that, he will do it again..hence causing much frustration.
IMHO listening between the lines Obama is more ideological despite his non-ideological rhetoric. He’s just not throwing out “red meat” to liberals and progressives. It’s up to us to expose the failures and hypocrisy of conservatism rather than expect Obama to do it all.
Yeah. One of the last bands I saw before going to play in the bush. Patti Santos was hot.
He did respond to it, Scarecro. It is part of the “No on 8″ web campaign
I’m gay, 61 years old and I don’t feel “worse” at all. That’s because, being a gay activitst for 39 of those years I have never trusted establishment politics to do anything. Our triumphs are entirely our own. If straights want to tag along, fine. But this is OUR fight and WE will do the fighting. This is something that Milk (which I was lucky enought to see on Tuesday) hits home with incredible force.
Man, I think people take comments such as yours re: Rachel far too literally sometimes.
your talking too rational and logical. stop.it.
*G*
Chris Bowers says Obama’s already won. Could be, but I’m superstitious about this sort of thing.
http://www.openleft.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=9555
We all have our own ideology, our vision. Mine is prolly different from everyone here. Finding common ground is the key.
Very true.
I didn’t know that. Is there a link?
I didn’t know “It’s a Beautiful Day” was from Chicago. She sings with Andrea Botocelli some…she did sing it White Night seems was also perfroming.
I met this short kid in the Navy in Norfolk he told me stories about the back alleys of Chicago…had a really long pollack nose…used to hide from the cops in trash cans…he was a crack up..what crazy stories..we went chasing girls in the night clubs dancing and playing pool with barefoot VA eastern shore girls and hang at the drive Ins real american grsffitti southern style. Chicago too cold for this CA boy. Altough lived years in Denver no wind like the Hawk or Mariah. You can freeze to death if you are homeless in Chicago.
Oh, I have found a yoga studio that offers Kundalini Yoga and have signed up. I really want to have a solid grounding (heh) in the asanas and thought. I’m super excited about it
Let me see if I can find it for ya *g*
Here is the No on 8 site
Here is an article on it from the Sac Bee
It’s a great place to be from!
Far from?
Good for you.
Joseph Campbell did a serious on world religions and part of it covers Kundalini and what it is. Well worth watching. I can’t remember the title of the series and a bibliography didn’t jog my memory. The episode is labeled Kundalini so if the library has some of his tapes you might be able to find it. I’ll do some more looking.
edit –
seriousseriesThanks. I will look for it at the county library.

aw, I had an airplane story to tell you, remind me.
Dat’s de one. You can sense the presence of Alan Ginsberg inside.
Thanks. I missed that. I was wrong, and glad of it.
Thanks, RevDeb. You said exactly what I was thinking. But @ 4:30 am Maui time, it can’t exactly be classified as “thinking” on my part.
My biggest concern about Obama and the Blue Dogs comes from raising children. When your children exhibit “bad behavior,” you explain, illustrate or let them suffer the consequences of such. Obama doesn’t look to me like he’s ready to characterize past Blue Dog behavior as “bad,” so what incentive do these folks have to change in any way. To paraphrase what Obama said to Rachel about himself, “it works for them.”
How he handles Joe Lieberman is going to be another interesting story.
too funny!
in the comments “Wait til they get the Palindrone out!”
Well, Obama did take Joe aside for a talk in the floor of the Senate….
By the elbow, IIRC.
I think many people here are selling Obama way too short.
He doesn’t seem to tolerate bad behavior much, just look at his campaign.
No leaks, minimal out of line comments.
I’m skeptical that all of the criticism is constructive…quite the contrary. At least in part it seems relentlessly negative and nonconstructive.
