A slander so vile even Fred Hiatt calls McCain an "idiot":
To suggest, as Mr. McCain has, that there is something reprehensible about associating with Mr. Khalidi is itself condemnable — especially during a campaign in which Arab ancestry has been the subject of insults. To further argue that the Times, which obtained the tape from a source in exchange for a promise not to publicly release it, is trying to hide something is simply ludicrous, as Mr. McCain surely knows.
Which reminds us: We did ask Mr. Khalidi whether he wanted to respond to the campaign charges against him. He answered, via e-mail, that "I will stick to my policy of letting this idiot wind blow over." That’s good advice for anyone still listening to the McCain campaign’s increasingly reckless ad hominem attacks. Sadly, that wind is likely to keep blowing for four more days.
John McCain is not a man very comfortable in his own skin. His self-proclaimed "honorableness" has been exposed as an epic fail on the grandest of scales. He has become a joke, letting the worst of right-wing bloggers steer a course from stupidity to vile.
And he can suck.on.that. for the rest of his days.

1,812 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Attaturk and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
These last couple a weeks when the old “socialist” bugaboo has been pulled outta mothballs, I’ve been thinkin that maybe we are seein’ the death throws of Randian pseudo economics and empireal political economy. This election is a referendum on the last 28 years of anti-New Deal fascism and the proof will be in the horrible spectacle of the Republican Party tryin’ ta find a phone booth that ken accomodate all 5 delegates to their national convention.
I am not gettin’ complaisent and I’m canvaasin GOTV on Saturday and Sunday but folks every generation gets a chance ta ride on the shoulders of history and Tuesday is our day.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, WE’LL HAFTA HUNT ‘EM OUT AFTER TUESDAY…BUT THEY WON’T BE HARD TA SPOT!!
Hey Loo. Thanks. That’s a fun little thingy. I like the dinosaur.
It seems like Sean Hannity is running the McCain campaign from the FOX news studio. The whole show tonight was about Khalidi, complete with Hannity producer-attack dogs chasing Khalidi out on the street, through the lobby of his apartment building, and nearly on to the elevator. Khalidi would’nt give them the time of day, not one word. Hannity showed all kinds of old tapes of Khalidi speeches and I saw absolutely nothing on them that were harmful to anyone, pro- Palestinian, or anti- Israel. It was all pure propaganda packaged up by Hannity for the consumption of the rabid GOP base. It seem like this is where the campaign is getting it’s cues from. He did the the same thing with Ayers, Acorn, and Rev. Wright. Sean Hannity, always willing to stand there with a butane lighter and a full can of gasoline.
Hey Norske,
We’ll be able to spot them because they will be
a) crying
b) heading for the airport.
See, in bed at 10 up at 5.
A former Republican Secretary of State and one of John McCain’s most prominent supporters offered a stunningly frank and remarkably bleak assessment of Sarah Palin’s capacity to handle the presidency should such a scenario arise.
Lawrence Eagleburger, who served as Secretary of State under George H.W. Bush and whose endorsement is often trumpeted by McCain, said on Thursday that the Alaska governor is not only unprepared to take over the job on a moment’s notice but, even after some time in office, would only amount to an “adequate” commander in chief.
Citizen Raven:
Hey Bro…I know that Athens is sort of a college “oasis” in central Georgia but what sense do ya get from the ground around there…any signs of shifts in the Confederate firmament?
RUMOR: Rahm Emanuel to be Obama’s Chief of Staff in the White House. I read it on the BBC.

Good morning Attaturk and thanks for the post.
Thanks for the link Loo Hoo. Funny stuff.
8 years ago I actually felt for John McCain because of the deplorable tactics used against him. That has turned to disgust so strong it raises bile. He has surly shown himself to be a man with no honor at all. It is not just that he hired the same loathsome cretins that slimed his family in 2000. It is also his craven, say or do anything, hate speech filled desperate campaign to win what he truly sees as his right. The Presidency.
In my mind he disqualified himself by believing that he is owed the office. He made the mistake of forgetting that it is not his to demand, it is ours to give.
Norske,
If you are still out there, I saw your comments downstairs and agree that Obama is keepin his powder dry. Very wise and savvy move to not disparage republicans as a block. Shows he understands that he will be President of the United States of America and ALL of her citizens. Not just the ones that vote “D”. Keepin the faith and the powder dry here.
Oldnslow
Citizen marshen:
This has been discussed in the thread above…If it’s true I think it’s good way ta get the old “Tiny Dancer” outta the congress and the elected leadership and if anyone ken handle ‘im it’s Obama…”keep your friends close and your enemies closer.”
I think that Obama’s slicker’n snot on a glass doorknob and I think he’s snookered the Big Dawg into thinkin’ he’s in the inner counsil…Obama played to the old dawg’s ego and got ‘im ta sing and dance last night in Florida.
The lines for voting in Atlanta have been unreal and the city itself has a large AA population. The senate race appears to be tied and we do see a ton of tv spots against Saxby that are not from Jim Martin (a Nam Vet) but from the Dem Senate Committee. Bottom line, there is a shot and that’s probably all that we can hope for.
Citizen Raven:
Any chance that the “true believers” and old Grey Coats will get discouraged and jest not show up Tuesday?
I wouldn’t bank on it. Voting against a brother is pretty appealing too.
Sigh…yer right as rain…voting in a “federal” election is an old Southerner’s last “fuck you” to the rest of the civilized Northern world.
Remember Rove works there inside the FOX Noise Machine now. Assume that Rove is holding strategy meetings with Roger Ailes, Hannity and some of the other traitorous co-conspirators to fashion talking points and narratives.
It’s ALL Karl Rove. If you pay attention, it’s very easy to spot the mark of Rove. He ALWAYS accuses the other side of doing that which the Republican Administration is guilty. ALWAYS.
The recent attack by the GOP, that it is the Democrats who are guilty of voter suppression or vote fraud or vote flipping / rigging?
The recent attack by the GOP that its Obama’s policies that are Socialist/Marxist, when this administration is in the midst of the largest REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH IN HISTORY (from the taxpayers to the banksters)?
When this campaign is over, insist that Karl Rove be arrested for treason AND domestic terrorism.
Check out Gov Moonpie:
Is this correct? Should book be taken “how much”?

What’s the question?
Just saw the report at BBC of McCain asking for emergency donations.
Looks like more month left at the end of the money “foresight”
Just curious how great the draw will be answered by “the base”
Wining is not everything its how you win that is just as important. America is paying attention this election. During a low turnout election an energized 30%er base can give you the victory.
The GOP however in getting power with the 30%ers has acted to please their base the Religious and Corporate wings of the GOP at the expense of the rest of us.
Now the Corporate wing needs a bailout. The religious wing can look back at Reagan and say what do we have to show for it?
After all Gays are getting rights and Abortion is still legal just what have they gotten for decades of voting GOP?
Bad business policy and nothing for the Religious branch have doomed the GOP.
That and GOP failure’s have woken voters up its a GOPpocalypse!
Gotcha
The Wapo has a big article about Falwell U and how terrified those goobers are that their reign of bullshit may be over.
“You’ve done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?” Joseph Welch to Sen. Joe McCarthy, June 9,1954
These words bring tears to the eyes of those of us who saw Joe Welch say those words on live TV.
Who will speak for Welch and for us today? Let’s put them on top of every reference to the despicable McCain.
Sounds very interesting Got a link? I don’t think The Rev Fawell will have that much luck getting his grads jobs in government or anywhere in this economy.
I wonder if the GOP in Congress, the WH or Karl sends any of their kids to his school?
A total lack of National GOPers sending their kids to his or Oral Roberts, Pat Robertson’s school etc would be a great story.

Morning everyone. I slept only 3 hours. This is so exciting!!!
We could get our country back!
(In honor of Marie Roget, who recently passed away.)
Morning all. Off in a jiff to an Obama fund raising committee meeting and then to do the real work of phonebanking etc. So a brief stop today. Leaving regards and messages for the breakfast crew, esp. Marion. Still ready to the menu for the virtual breakfast at the Lake. Bluestatereadhead AT gmail dot com will find me.
In my place, some sad moving hopeful stories and one for real threatening scary one–to BO and to civil society.

It is the GOPpocalypse! I wonder if the GOP is feeling like the Roman Senate right before Julius took over?
She used to comment her right I’m sorry she’s gone my Dad would have killed to see Obama elected.
I find great music here I never would have heard before thanks!
Makes me cry.
Good morning, pups. It’s Bobo and Krugman today. I sometimes wonder if the Times publishes Bobo and Krugman on the same day just to make fun of Bobo. He’s being a policy wonk today and discussing “A National Mobility Project.” No, it’s not a plan to get us all to get up off the couch and take a walk. Bobo says we need a national infrastructure project. What an original idea! I wonder why nobody’s ever thought of that before? Putz. Mr. Krugman writes about “When Consumers Capitulate,” and says that sooner or later, American consumers were going to have to pull in their belts. But the timing of the new sobriety is deeply unfortunate.

The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got a selection of bagels with cream cheese today. The latest update on early voting in Georgia from the League of Women Voters of Georgia:
Two days ago it was 25%. Also, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has been funding radio and TV ads hitting Saxby Chambliss hard. Please keep your fingers crossed that Jim Martin can get enough votes to stave off a run-off, which I think would favor Chambliss. Have a great day.
John McCain hates the Elite but thanks to public schools many of us here are better than George Will with Classic Quotes if we want to be.
I can think of easily over twenty people here who understand economics better than the entire GOP brain trust.
Thanks to legacies admissions to college the GOP elite have gotten a free ride to jobs in business power and if John had his way as a young man the military.
Ironically when race based college admission was thrown out because people were pissed that dark people were getting into college with lower test scores.
Never mind that minority schools often spend less per pupil getting them ready for college legacies with lower scores were not also excluded.
The result George Bush the first Harvard MBA has given us the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.
Mr bottom of his class McCain is now losing to the head of the Harvard Law review.

Obama has a strong get out the vote in GA and if that stays in place, Jim might win a run off. I hope that Jim wins with more that 50% just because the ads the RNC and DNC run would be awful.

To suggest, as Mr. McCain has, that there is something reprehensible about associating with Mr. Khalidi is itself condemnable
Swear to God. When I first read that i thought it said “commendable”. I’m thinking “That doesn’t make sense.”
Coffee please. Yes. Black.
Attaturk, you need a different link to your story.
The WaPo is playing guessing games about registration, just like the NYT does, and your link slams me up against a regwall.
I had to do a search on a sentence fragment to locate a copy at the WaPo that does not do this: An ‘Idiot Wind’.
I caught the Ann Coulter part. I honestly thoughht she was gonna cry. She was pissed. Funny stuff. She said now it’s just like before Hitler came to power. Wehn are people going to see that?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
and Tuesday is our day
I’m finally starting to feel that way. But i’m not getting complacent neither. Some trick-or-treat door knocking tonight. Drag some asses out to EV sat. More whatever Mon. Watch the polls Tues. Looking for someplace to watch the results come in after the polls close.
BOO!
Disn’t palin meet with the foreign plicy people yesterday? Was he there? is this assessment the result fo that meeting? Or just her general pathetic performance?
“Dear John McCain, Joe McCarthy called and wants his act back” — spot on.

did anyone else see any of that Georgetown lecture on Torture that just aired?
Boo yourself!
Morning all,
This McShame campaign has gone from sleaze to vile. If McShame were to get elected I am sure we could say bye to any vestige of respect in the world. Would we be viewed as fools or dangerous fools.
A few weeks ago i believed that McCain wasn’t comfortable with the attack/sleeze tactics. Dumb. the more I see of him, he seems to be enjoying it.
Anybody seE herbert Hoover’s granddaughter on FOX last night? I guess she’s a regular now. She’s an expert on the economy because of wHo her grandad was kindalike Palin is an expert on Russia cause you can see it from Alaska. Same logic (such as it is.) Who’s the other blond she was on with? they both said McCain clearly won the last debate and had Obama on the ropes.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
back for a sec. Glad for the bagels. see my invite above. off to hope-hope-hope goldmines (BO Campaign HQ)
wow. good numbers.
Morning everyone – it’s 20 degrees at my house(we will not discuss how cold it is INSIDE during Day xx of the “how long can we go without turning on the heat” contest. As for McCain’s ‘epic fall’ — I’ve got to say that the view of McCain’s trajectory during this campaign season is really a matter of people’s shining a whole lotta light on his history and character. there are a lot of people out there, myself included, that never saw him as honorable. It really seems that every single time he got to a decision place in his life, he ‘chose poorly.”
nice post attaturk
the problem with khalidi’s response is that the obama camp is faced with a catch 52
if they don’t address the issue then it looks like the attacks are true
if he does address the issue he brings attention to the issue
I beleive the obama camp is up to the task, they can attack in their defense, they know how to do that
but with so little time left till we vote, do they wind up ahead or behind by defending
boo hoo?
boo you?
boo loo?
boo me?
no, it’s boo hoo, I know this as a fact
fox polling still has this for mccain at 3 percent, gallop, the best known poll has this at 5 percent.
these numbers are there to make it plausable if they are able to facilitate their flip
G’morning folks 24 degrees this morning ,the frost is on the pumpkin today!!
I don’t know about any of you , but I won’t relax until after the election ,when Obama is declared the winner.
I don’t care what the polls or the pundits say, they’ve been wrong before!!
Anyone watching Morning Joe? Willie in a McCain/Palin tshirt gets reactions from “elitist” New Yorkers. Listening to their usual nonsensical analyzing is not a good way to start out a morning or conquer a teeth grinding habit.
oh man,
you are tempting the fates to break your water pipes.
Bobo is a moron there has been no stimulus because there has been no return on investment from Bush’s spending.
Now if Bush had won the war and oil prices had gone down and stayed down long enough to pay for the cost of the war then we would have broke even
Lower oil prices after the war was paid would have been a return on investment.
Opportunity Costs though also have to be measured like could we get a better return on our money by doing something else?
Like for example GOING AFTER OSSAMA BIN LADIN!
If Ossama launches another terror attack Bush’s decision to let Ossama live and invade Iraq instead is going to cost America severely.
Rebuilding our Nation’s roads, bridges sewer systems etc will give us benefit retooling Detroit to make hybrid cars will save us gas.
Which means the Arabs have less money to give Ossama.
The American made and designed Aptera Car could cause such a demand creted drop in oil prices that Ossama will have to get a day job.
Bobo confuses pork spending with economic stimulus a return on tax payers money is the first step of deciding if spending is pork or stimulus and if the spending is the best use of our money/Opportunity cost.
http://mgpaquin.wordpress.com/
Is that from a Dr. Seuss book?
Doncaha talk back to your TV?
Let’s see Willie walk around suburban Atlanta with a Obama/Biden shirt on. Better yet maybe he can go a little further north into Forsyth County.
and the fodder’s in the shack
I had to stop yelling at the tv, makes my husband and dogs nervous.
Happy Halloween. I dressing up as a radical left wing rabble rouser. That means I’m adding my IWW button to my shirt, next to my Join the Resistance button. Have to think of a new terror with which to strike into the hearts of my Rethug acquaintances since I give it to ‘em every day anyhow.
it’s from his personal notes, we had coffee the other day at panera.
he had the chedar brocholi in a bread bowl

he is a fine physician, I wonder why he does not practice anymore
ps, he seems to like food that’s green…he wants me to take him out on st patty’s day because he says we can get green eggs (I would have though he”s jewish but he does like ham)
Doesn’t everyone want a VP who wishes she had named a kid Zamboni?
you should try Marion’s solution to the problem, a basket of rolled up socks by your side.
I’m a Floridian, I don’t have enough socks to fill a basket.

he must lie to exist, in fact, lying IS his existance
makes me think she might not be that bad after all.
I wouldn’t have minded frank zappa, see what he named his kids?
Until he is actually sentenced, he can still legally vote. Remember Ken Lay who died before he was sentenced. I just hope he doesn’t win re-election and then resigns. Sarah would then appoint his successor and we can assume that a Palin would be the next Senator.
That will be my sole criteria for the presidential vote. Zamboni. WTF is she thinking?
Elliot@68:
Some friends used to shoot rubber suction darts at their tv screen but they wore the darts outs.
I had exactly the same impression about the Rahm rumour; plus it gets him out of Congress, where he was potential trouble. I think you’re right about the Big O’s snookering the Big Dawg, too. Obama’s got FDR’s touch. It would be nice, though, if he could get Clinton involved in Israel-Palestinian negotiations. He almost pulled it off the last time, and has creds with both sides.
But we shouldn’t be selling the bearskin before we shoot the bear.
Heard on Randi Rhodes show:
A shop clerk to a woman customer, “So you’re a hockey mom!”.
Hockey mom sighs & said, “That used to be a good thing.”

Good Morning Attaturk and Firedogs,
Fred Hiatt ?? really ?
well this is gonna make things a little awkward at his friday night Early Bird supper with Broder – dayum
C&L came right up for me
Somehow my link to Marion in Savannah disappeared so I put it in the first comment. Sorry Marion.
She’d only appoint him if she were to win on Tuesday. My guess is that she’d appoint herself.
Morning all. I envy everyone’s confidence. I’m still very nervous about this election. Pollster.com changed from 272 strong back to 258 (Virginia back to ‘Leans Dem’). I’m very worried about relying on the newly registered. Both for turnout and shennanigans.
good morning,
so very sorry to hear about Marie Roget’s passing. always enjoyed her contributions here. a real loss for this community.
and I have been meaning to ask what if anything is going on in the Hamilton-Issa race, can’t find any current polling
Everyone seems to have their favorite Palin gaffe. Mine is when she was talking to Katie about Russia supposedly flying over Alaska’s airspace & said earnestly, “And where do dey go?” God help us.
I imagine they would impeach her butt if she gave it a shot
but she would give it a shot anyway
I hope that with an Obama/Biden win this country will revert back to a country that seeks knowledge, and embraces science.
This article is just one more difference between Obama and McCain.
Obama embraces intellectuals and discussions, theories based on facts.
McCain and 8 years of Bush have ridiculed and demonized anything scientific, have discouraged intellectual discourse and made a mockery of anything “elite”, especially education.
It fits with the authoritarian policies of this administration and the Republican party in general and we can expect 4 more years of the same with a McCain/Palin presidency, especially if Palin becomes president.
I, for one, hope and pray for President Obama. Just for a president who values intellectuals and education and what they can contribute to our country. And also for a President we could be proud of?
I love when she goes onto one of her palinopathetic monologues
Happy Halloween!!!!
I am so tired of the stupids turning this country into a sick joke.
that is it in a nutshell
they do not want an educated mass, that is why they want magic taught in science class, it is why they want to marry state with religion, it is why they want to privitise the school system with vouchers
Ditto.
my 98 was for your 94
Perris, she just makes my head hurt.
I noticed how many guys go to Palin’s rallies, one article said 70% are men. Creeped me out. R’s have no problem with suppressing probable D votes but love those guys voting solely with their peni$es.
Scarecrow’s upstairs swimming and drinking milkshakes
“Penises for Palin”…New McInsane campaign slogan yuk.
Example of “palinopathology” Re: Planks in Rep. platform
[PALIN] Absolutely. And Dr. Dobson thank you so much for recognizing that. This is a strong platform. [inaudible] around the planks in this platform that respect life and respect the entrepreneurial spirit of this great country. And those things, back to the social issues that are what Republicans at least in the past had articulated and tried to stand on. Now finally we have very solid planks in the platform that will allow us to build an even stronger foundation for our country. It is all good and it is encouraging, you would maybe have assumed people would have, that we would have gotten further away from those strong planks. But no, they are there, they are solid, we stand on them and again I believe that it is the right agenda for the country at this time. Very, very clear and contrasted tickets in this election, November 4th. People are going to see the clear contrast, just go to the planks in our platform and that is where you see them.
She says a lot of words, but doesn’t say much, does she?
I did! Not all of it but what I heard was powerful. That idiot moderator got squashed down but good with his stooopid last question about the usual “ticking time bomb” cr @ p.
Last night my husband and I had voter watching training in Ohio…such a different tone than ‘04. Republican (Dems never did/do) watchers are not allowed to challenge in the polling place under the new law…In fact we don’t even know if there will be republican watchers. My assignment is 4 precincts in one polling place…a church…hope it has a community room because I despair seeing polls in churches. All the precincts in one place has to mean NE Ohio needs more poll watchers... Can you help in the battleground states? Call any Dem office and volunteer. AZ and Virginia and any new statenow in play needs volunteer lawyers and citizens too. Out of state folk have to stay outside the polling station but, unlike Kerry day rain and sleet, it should be 65 degrees clear and sunny in OH. The lawyer introducing the session assumed we were all lawyers and was surprised to see most of us were artists, history academics, union members and homemakers.
I need to do something election day though my kitchen floor needs to be cleaned and my studio is calling.
So the Edward Said Chair at Columbia, Khalidi is pro-palestinian. (I think he’s the Edwards Said chair?) Big deal. So was Edward Said, who was Palestinian *smacks head*. And who doesn’t respect Edward Said, cranky lit crit extradordinaire, deconstructor of “orientalism”? He was one of the stars in the lit constellation. McCain’s attack on Khalidi seems racist and anti-intellectual, or just anti-thinking person.
I find “koosh” balls work quite well.
And remember, sock-throwers, the socks you roll into a ball don’t have to MATCH. [Excellent use, btw, for all those socks whose spouses have gone missing in the dryer.]
