Wingnuttia is all ablaze with this story:
John McCain’s presidential campaign Tuesday accused the Los Angeles Times of "intentionally suppressing" a videotape it obtained of a 2003 banquet where then-state Sen. Barack Obama spoke of his friendship with Rashid Khalidi, a leading Palestinian scholar and activist.
I guess some are tempted to file this under the category of "October surprise," a blockbuster the McCain campaign tucked away for a rainy day:
"A major news organization is intentionally suppressing information that could provide a clearer link between Barack Obama and Rashid Khalidi," said McCain campaign spokesman Michael Goldfarb. " . . . The election is one week away, and it’s unfortunate that the press so obviously favors Barack Obama that this campaign must publicly request that the Los Angeles Times do its job — make information public."
Poor Goldfarb. Unleashed on campaign stooge duty once again. From the Huffington Post:
McCain Funded Work Of Palestinian His Campaign Hopes To Tie To Obama
During the 1990s, while he served as chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI), McCain distributed several grants to the Palestinian research center co-founded by Khalidi, including one worth half a million dollars.
A 1998 tax filing for the McCain-led group shows a $448,873 grant to Khalidi’s Center for Palestine Research and Studies for work in the West Bank. (See grant number 5180, "West Bank: CPRS" on page 14 of this PDF.)
The relationship extends back as far as 1993, when John McCain joined IRI as chairman in January. Foreign Affairs noted in September of that year that IRI had helped fund several extensive studies in Palestine run by Khalidi’s group, including over 30 public opinion polls and a study of "sociopolitical attitudes."
It’s a sign of last-minute desperation that the McCain campaign had to launch an attack that was so weak and easily refuted. Bet they kept a few things back from the wingnuts when they launched them into hyper-screech?

Ooooopsie!
Stepped on his pecker again.
Was this after his warm visit with Pinochet and friends?
Lies, lies, lies, and more lies! McCain&Palin at work as usual. SOP, SOSDD, and a thousand other ways to lie. The rethuglian party’s soul is infested with lying and suppressing the vote, the truth and and any other tactic they can gin up to try and win.
This time the people are seeing through their veil of lies and will be voting for Barack Obama and return of a government of the people by the people FOR the People!
I am not sure what the fuss is about. Rashid Khalidi is actually quite moderate. Or is the idea that Palestinians are people and deserve some rights considered radical?
McCain is clearly too WASPy to be an evil funder of terrorists. Only black or brown skinned ones count. Except Ayres, of course.
Time for McCain to chant “POW POW POW” over and over.
OT: Here is a very inspiring op-ed by Susan Straight in today’s LA Times.
That’s exactly what i was gonna say!
Yep. I’ve read two books by Rashid Khalidi, and learned more about Palestine-Israel than from all other sources combined. The man has a clear mind and writes in a very balanced way, considering the way his people have been treated. No Edward Said, he.
you know, I never imagined I could detest a politician as much as George Bush, but McFlameout is giving it the old college try for me.
i’m gettin’ more worrieder and worrieder every day.
Cindy’s little man would be proud to have exceeded Bush in at least one area.
Boy I hate the whole Rethuglian Party as much as I hate BushCo because they have never done anything for the common man of this country. their history says it all if you are not Rich, well connected or a good little rethuglian they would rather see you dead than to spend one red cent to give you a helping hand to better yourself!! Bastards, I want to see them regulated to the trash heap of history and to be made and example of what pure unadulterated GREED will do to some one or Party!!
CNN just broadcast Obama giving his stump speech and at its conclusion, what did the CNNbot find to comment on? That he seemed a tad less energetic than usual.
I kid you not.
No matter how hard anybody works for the Obama campaign, there is nobody working harder than Barack Obama himself.
GOTV.
They’ve gotten about 4,000 planted 6ft under.
he’s brown and from ‘that’ part of the eorld, you know…the terrorist part
Might I suggest that, as Rachel did last night, everyone tun off their computers, tv’s and go camping.
I thought HoJo was your number one …
I left you a response way downstairs regarding Valdosta *g*

The butcher bill – 4188 + US killed, perhaps up to 1,000,000 Irakis.
I was going to do just that but then I saw that wonderful ‘Charles meets Barack’ video and am now back to phone banking again. Wondering how the lines are going to be around here on election day.
Too damn cold.
and me to you!
And another thing, why do we have to wait 25 minutes between thread around here?

Hyper-screech?
That’s the sound of brakes failing, bearings seizing, and axles grinding as the wheels all come off the bus at once…
How very true! But that is only counting our citizens! How about all the other innocent lives they have wasted?? Hopefully they will get their just Due when they face the maker!! I don’t think Jesus will take too kindly their destroying of so many lives in their quest for Oil!
What ya worried ’bout, BL?
Either we ‘win’, fairly
or ‘they’ steal the election.
In either case, we’re gonna
find out what ‘we’ are made of.
Aren’t we?
Stump a wingnut:
I’ve been telling the wingnuts at work that if they vote for McCain it proves they want to pay higher taxes. It actually shut them up. Unbelievable.
(bows) Konnichiwa, Wobbs
If Obama loses, we suck and I quit. But until then, I’m klnocking on doors tonight, this weekend adn working vote protectiona all day Tuesday or anytime they call me until the end of EV. if it’s not enough, i quit.

hmm dunno. canvassers for various state propositions and local measurements have been popping by all week. sheesh Tuesday can’t come fast enough for me.
If we get any poorer, we’ll be camping out every night. I’ll enjoy the indoors for as long as I can, thanks.
I’m of DFH stock and if they still this election, I’ll do what any DFH would do
yeah had to use some metaphor for the man upstairs(or where ever he is) didn’t I??
That was a metaphor?
But now my head hurts, my feet stink, and I don’t love Jesus

I reserve a different kind of contempt for HoJo; he is in a class of his own.
Ask them what who are the benefactors of the greatest entitlement programs of all time?
And the answer is
“The Greatest Generation”!
I hear ya BFL. The anticipation is just too much!
What’s wrong with Edward Said? He opposed Israel, but Israel needs opposing unless you believe that anyone who opposes what Israel does must be anti-semetic. Actually when it comes to violating rights Israel is on a par with the US. For an Israeli’s take, read “An Israeli in Palestine” by David Halper (I believe that’s his name) He is an American Jew who lived in Israel many years. He’s with the peace party but I assume a good deal of what he writes is true.
spellon’ don’t count. spell check is a pain in the ass. and I’ve got so many words of wisdom to impart to you guys, i’d hate to keep ya waitin’ over somethin’ as stupid as spellin’. i won’t quit. i probably won’t leave the house for a time. i don’t wanna get moderated but i won’t be happy if any wise-ass tries to goof on me if Obama loses.
LOL. i guess we can’t complain here that we don’t have any say in state legislation but still we alomost always have more props on the ballot than any other state. It’s what brings out the deadenders out to throw money at these fundy issues
I mean the Doobie’s
in a way, i love it. but it’s also scary when you consider the possibilities. i don’t like being scared.
ah, the Flamethrower approach!
spontaneous head explosions *g*
I’m sure I’ll witness plenty of that come next tuesday.
click on the link!!! And That is who you will find… seems we ARE on the same page Raven(:>))
I was thinkin of another kind of proposition. (wink wink)
I’m a Said fan with regards to his Post-colonial theory writings
I am looking forward to seeing John McCain and Myth McConnell acting like the Duke Brothers at the end of trading places…

I will settle for Bennett & Rush’s heads explodin’ … and of course Buchanan …
These hyperlinks are a bitch for a beat up ol vet to see!
Ultimately, BL, your hope shall be vindicated.
However, that vindication might yet require more ‘efforts’ upon our part.
But, as I implied, whatever the outcome of this election, we shall not be in any position to relax and leave things to their own course …

I read his Orientalism and it took him the first 100 pages to say that the victor writes the history. Then, within a short period of time I heard him talk about how miserable his priviliged rich academic life was at NYPL, within weeks of hearing Ariel Dorfman speak about his life jumpiing back & forth among countries as a political refugee without much money to rely on. Dorfman was, nonetheless upbeat. I think Said’s a shallow whiner. That’s what’s wrong with him.
(((Petro)))
can we throw in Hannity and O’Reily as well?
Dam Well put your glasses on! I had to bite the bullet a long time ago and get mine…glad I did as it sure helps to see what you are configuring whilst working on PCs!!
I had the speech streaming in the background. At the very end, I thought he sounded out of breath so I switched to the picture and he was swilling down water. I think he’s near exhaustion.
About a minute later, he flashed the smile and dove into the crowd, trailing a stream of Secret Service…
I was listening to Wes Clark interviewed by Steph Miller this a.m. He used a sports analogy of the World Series, saying that some people are just tuning in now that three games have been played. Meaning that some folks didn’t catch the major gaffes by McCain in his Dudley Doo-right impersonation during the bailout, photo opp only thank you!, or the Palin pick which McCain watchers called “pure McCain” rolling the dice, flying the plane upside down, etc. They miss all that and are only now tuning in to the Series. It was scaring Steph.
The only cure for nerves is an Obama rally.
Between his skin crawling sanctimony and Palin’s vacantly prideful all-knowing know-nothingism, they are making G.W. Bush look like Poppy Bush.
-G
Nah, those two nutjobs are salivatin’ at the thought of an Obama presidency. They will be foaming at the mouth every night at how “badly” he’s running the joint …
PC’s, I’m a mac. And I’ve worn glasses ever since I wrote that diss on an SE!
Scanner’s style.
Billo must be losing his mind watching Keith’s march up to his castle gates.
-G
haha! I used a bunch of Trading Places quotes yesterday. You can find the whole script in the toobz…love love love that movie. Jacuzzi, sir?
Actually Orientalism is a great piece of literary theory. It examines basically how views of ‘other’ are constructed and how those constructions are historic and a result of not questioning the paradigm behind the construction. In the end the question is raised as to whether one can truly talk about another group (outside of their own) without these constructions coming into play.
I like this one.
Raven, can ya see this link better?
Isn’t she just warming up to take over Stevens’ seat in the Senate. I noticed she referenced “my colleagues in the Senate…” don’t you have to be in the senate first?
I think Hannity will lose it. He is hysterical now about how the media is ignoring the ayers thing that would so obviously sink Obama.
hell, he even calls himself a journalist. WTF?
Now we see why the Bush family didn’t put Jeb in McCain’s VP spot.
That film was based on a Three Stooges short if you didn’t know.
“This is PCP, phenacyclidene. Ever see what this stuff does to kids?
-G
Could have fooled me. Thought it was terribly written, so badly that it was hard to figure what he was saying. And what I did figure out could have been said much more complactly, and have been much more comprehensible.
*bangs head against computer table*
Doesn’t McCain even read these things before they go out? Or doesn’t he remember that far back? You’d think he’d remember having had this contact with Khalidi.
*resumes head banging*
He must be snugglin’ tightly to his life- size Loofah …
this reminds me of the so-called smear that obama is/was muslim. we’ve got to do more than say it’s not true, or throw the same accusations back at the wingnuts.
we’ve got to do what colin powell did (as much as it pains me to say it, he’s better on this than we’ve been) – and say that it’s wrong wrong wrong to call people who support palestinian rights terrorists. it’s wrong because it’s untrue, and it’s wrong because palestinians should have people advocating for their rights – and that we are proud that our country, whatever else it has, also has a long history of people advocating for the rights of the marginalized.
I thought he looked and sounded quite tired, too!
Newt the shamed ex-speaker,
Haven’t seen Newt at a McCain/ Palin rally, have you?
One of the nice things about republicans and their fears of socialists in this country is that they only raise them up during elections. They never go Mcarthy on them during the regular political season.
I’ve always appreciated how the republicans have their “most Liberal” of the month. It is like McDonalds having their employee of the month. You know instead of paying them better they stroke them. Its less expensive.
Newt would have been so much fun to see as McCain’s veep choice. I know many enjoyed Palin the gaff’er. But Newt offers a treasure trove of snide, bombastic history of himself and republicans.
Hannity the self proclaimed family values vulture embraces Newt the man that has no family values. Newt is neo con that not long ago gave a speech where he was making compelling reasons to “suspend free speech” all together during the War on Terror. Newt, like Cheney love to project and pretend he is a military hawk. But like Cheney Newt has always had more imprtant things to do than to serve in America’s military. It has always been something for the less royal people.
You know, I just didn’t see Newt in the republican primary? Why doesn’t this bastion of conservatism run?
LOLROLF
no room for complacency, but for the faint of heart there is reassurance in the projections that Obama has a firewall of 273 electoral votes from states where he’s polling at +8% or better.
I think that his work along with that of Mudimbe, mbembe, etc. create a nice pushback against some of the more WATB prevailing thoughts about travel narratives
I guess it did fool you but then again, i read it from a literary theory/ post colonial theory aspect
Never heard that before, I take it.
N ope new one for me… funny as hell…oops
new post … as Raven might say “About time”
hell yes!
McCain about Obama: Wearing my tie, like oh sure, he went to Harvard!
jeff halper – and he calls himself “An Israeli in Palestine” (also the name of his book – which was discussed with him here at book salon in june)

.. sorry, big fan.
I’ll keep that in mind, what there is left of it.
Of all the things I’ve lost, I miss my mind the most. Mick Jagger
Who’s coming over tonight? I’ve got a big pot of bean soup: black beans, red beans, white beans, black eyed peas, barley and smoked sausage. Mmmmm, it’s done and resting on the stove ’till I reheat it later.
Read Ariel Dorfman as a man who’s moved back & forth between U.S., Argentina, Chile (iirc, read both books about 7 or 8 years ago), with his family one step ahead of being disappeared or otherwise maltreated. Then decide who has the greater insight.
http://www.amazon.com/Heading-…..038;sr=1-1
As for the Palestinian situation, as I said in my original comment, I’ve not read anyone clearer and with better insight than Khalidi.
I agree that it’s difficult to put yourself into someone else’s shoes, and the ability to do so may be largely genetic, in the sense of empathy genes you are born with. But as I’ve read more about the world in the past 8 years, I’ve not found it impossible to understand the other’s POV.
his schedule is brutal. he was in NC? he has a rally in kissimmee w/ bill clinton @ 11 o’clock tonight.
Jim White, how was Joe?
yeah, but as you show – we’ve got to try.
No doubt. i certainly don’t mean Said is the goto with regards to the Palestinian sitaution. My response wa soley to his ‘Orientalism’ work.
As far as putting yourself in someone shoes, that really wasn’t his point. it was that do we or can we recognize that in ourselves those beliefs and ideas that we have about other cultures are not neceaasrily true or based on any real knowledge (rather a perception, stereotype or generality that we –our culture has created and passed off as knowledge of the other group)
a good example of this would be the practice of cannibalism by the Tupi indians
yeah and if you belive that bull you’ll belive OBAMA (the give it all to me and i’ll make it all even)is going to save the world!
woof
Ahh I see you missed the memo that he is the chosen one. Well now you know so you can move along now. Nothing to see here
But the reason I read books about other countries or cultures is precisely because I am unwilling to accept word of mouth or preconceived notions. For example, I didn’t understand 9/11 at all from the U.S. POV. Only after I had read several books about OBL, Afghanistan history, etc., did it finally start to make sense.
Most people don’t go to the trouble, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.
Don’t understand how Tupi cannabalism fits in to what you are saying. Do you mean that when cultures interact, they project their own values on the other and condemn them when they don’t meet the standard of the more powerful culture? I agree that this happens almost all the time, but it is possible to avoid.
Yeah thats what you and all your little friends want everyone to do. just move along with the koolaid drinking crowd and pretend that everythings gonna be fine now that your chosen one is one the scene?
Not so much that they project their own values as they do a comparison of their own practices and values as a way to get their mind around the other cultures practices. there is no problem with that. The problem arises when value is placed on these practices in comparion to our own. In the case of the Tupi, their practice of cannibalism was not seen for what it was in their culture rather for what it in comparison to our own where cannibalim is not practiced.
Your wasting your time on this site. if you want to earn McCain points for the nifty beach towel, try Daily Kos
The Tupi would eat their war prisoners as a way of taking on their enemies strength and an adding on to the person that they are (they are bigger than themselves ) when the europeans saw it, they said we dont practice that because it is barbaric hence the Tupi are barbaric.
i totally agree it is not possible but it is diffiult and requires that one first recognize that those biases, etc exist and are a part of the knowledge we have about the other group.
Right. That’s what I thought you meant about the Tupis, but probably didn’t word it clearly.
I have run into this in reading, for example, Lawrence’s Pillars of Wisdom, and other books about the Brits in the ME in the 1920s. They never understood what they were dealing with in the indiginous people & cultures.
The knowledge that we as western cultures have about many non-western cultures are in fact sterotypes and generalities resulting from encounters the groups had with one another.
Some (like you) seekout the truth but you have to admit many others are satisfied with the tripe they are fed wrt other cultures
You want a laugh? Read Columbus’s account with the natives. He truly was clueless but his cluelessness led to genocide
Yep, yep, yep.
It’s particularly difficult for the powerful country to “understand” the other. They think they don’t need to, and in large part they are right. Until, of course, they’re not. But the latter happens usually a lot later.
My biggest puzzles are within my own country. Can’t understand, for example, why my son is a wingnut. How much closer to home can it get?
Thanks for sticking it out. Good discussion.
what i know about my own culture is probably mostly stereotypes. still, gotta try.
happy to stick it out. just nice to know other folks ponder this as well as myself
I symathize! I have pretty much the same problem!
Na Its not for Mac, its @ the fact of the whole liberal movement and what it will really do to your rights as an american citizen. its about turning everything into a socialist socity. its about the truth of who we the people elect intro the most powerful polictical office in the world! Hell mac may not have a clue but I know that Obama is all about turnning the constitution on its ear. Go ahead Drink drink till your little bellys are full and when you don’t even have the right to get on here and smear the people you feel neeeds smearing and youdon’t have a job because the government said you don’t need to work cause you’ve earned to much this week, month, year or however long then maybe you’ll scratch your belly and say Hmm? what happened to all that koolaid i was drinking? its not so sweet now!
That you do. But since that knowledge is not used to conquer mentally or physically, you are heads above what we do/ have done to other cultures
You owe me a drink. *g*
Bad parenting? (Just kidding.)
really, your wasting your time here. Your not going to convince us that McCain is good for this country. So go rack up your points for your commuter mug at Atrios or maybe TPM. There is a bunch of hippies/liberal/treehuggers over there
Us kids have to find our own way and sometimes we wander far off the reservation. Some of us find our way back and others just stay out there. I blame MTV and teh gays *g*
Heh. He did call me to wish me a happy birthday today, so I must have done something right.
probably not the first time and i doubt it will be the last *g*
whatcha havin’?
Apple cider. It’s the season.
Happy Birthday, eCAHN! Mine calls me on his birthday to thank me for birthing him!
Happy Birthday !!!
Let’s raise a toast of (virtual) Pol Roger … Salud !
so long as there is breath there is hope. i know i’ve changed my political views (on my second time now) – who knows where your son will wander? he may not always be a wingnut, but he’s always be your son.
Like I said its not for Mac. I’m not supporting any of the stereo typing political nuts (DEM’s or REPUB’S) that the MSM (and youself) seem to be. I’m tellin you, your days of drinking the sweet koolaid are going to be the truth you wished had not come to light! None of the major canididits are telling the truth, only what the koolaid drinkers wanna here.
Thanks Ann. That’s amazing.
Thanks Pertocelli. Waiting til after 5 to indulge.
I’ll certainly send some hippy vibes in the hopes that they might work *g*
At 27 he’s got a lot of growing up to do.
You’re quite welcome!

Parabéns a você,

Muitas felicidades,
Muitos anos de vida.
*our version of Happy Birthday to you*
LOL wait, there is a Nader ad?
No. I’ll go now. but i’ll be back one day. I’m sure you can’t wait.
Wow. A multilingual birthday. My day’s been made.
Didn’t you see it ?
… gimme a sec, I’ll find the link …
Don’t let the Door …
*G*
Hehehehe!
wobblybits @135 – excellent idea!
eCAHN @132 – 27 is still way young.
i confess i won’t be holding my breath. i’m no fan of obama (don’t even plan to vote for him) – but i am a fan of the people here and i’m not keen on the way you diss them.
Nader’s game changing ad – from the Orange Satan
That’s one amazingly bad piece of video. Doesn’t even pass the embarrassment test.
shoot i mistype. let me do this again nad not embarass my country:
Parabéns pra você
Nesta data querida
Muitas felicidades
Muitos anos de vida!
forgive me dad
Ralphie was quite impressed that they found the $$$ to do it in color …
Thought something looked slightly awry. *g*
Harumpf … I was waiting for you t fix yer typos, young lady !
WTF? were those special effects or just bad video skills?
And I suppose they thought the pixelating would make all the youguns oooh and aaah.
… FX fer Dummies …
Hmm sorry LOL I have grown accustomed to singing the Luso version which uses ‘a’ instead of ‘pra’.
Well I had the last name right. Didn’t know about the peace prize. Guys like him deserve it. The house demolitions are an abomination.
Hey eCAHN, the feds cut their rate to 1 %. Where can I find info on the New York Prime Rate ?
teh google? I don’t know how quickly the prime rate is changed after the Fed changes rates, meaning instantaneously, within hours, or within days. It’s one of those technicalities I never learned.
I tried google … kept bringing up prime rates of other banks but no mention of New York Prime, except some links to Steaks … *g*
Prime rate should be here.
i agree about the deserving part. halper and andoni only got nominated – but at least it was by the afsc. never met halper (and was at ecahn’s bbq when he was here for book salon), but did have the honor of meeting andoni (at a nonviolence training he had organized).
Are you voting for anyone for president? Hope you bite the bullet before it’s over. Might I suggest a longer view? Go for Obama as the best of a so-so lot. Then let’s discuss other possibilities via the internet for 2012.
I thought the prime rate was Federal?
Thanks Ann … I did find some great places for Steak dinners in NY though … *g*
protest vote this time. tired of every 4 years having to go lower on the scale of “least bad.” understand that’s not for everyone though.
Jane Hamsher:
You need to add to this post what should be obvious, but isn’t necessarily: that it’s anti-Arab racist claptrap — presumably meant to remind us of Obama’s middle name — to condemn such an affiliation.
Imagine being an Arab in this country these days, much less a Muslim one.
Who are you protesting through?
I went over to Little Green Footballs, then to HotAir, then to Michelle Malkin to post. They are all closed. They will not take new registrants. In other words, during the campaign season, they don’t want to hear from anyone buy the wing nuts in their echo chamber. I was going to post this:
“During the 1990s, while he served as chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI), McCain distributed several grants to the Palestinian research center co-founded by Khalidi, including one worth half a million dollars.
A 1998 tax filing for the McCain-led group shows a $448,873 grant to Khalidi’s Center for Palestine Research and Studies for work in the West Bank. (See grant number 5180, “West Bank: CPRS” on page 14 of this PDF.)
The relationship extends back as far as 1993, when John McCain joined IRI as chairman in January. Foreign Affairs noted in September of that year that IRI had helped fund several extensive studies in Palestine run by Khalidi’s group, including over 30 public opinion polls and a study of “sociopolitical attitudes.”
