Last week, AFT-COPE announced the launch of battleground ads, including in WV, but I had not heard one on my local radio until this morning. I like it — listen and see what you think.
Obama seems to be having a last-minute surge in the Mountain State. At least if my most recent conversations with undecided or "formerly leaning McCain but not any longer" folks are an indication.
But will Obama close the gap?
Obama had his best month in donations ever from WV last month. My unscientific "drive around town" viewing of increasingly more yard signs, bumper stickers, and homemade notes taped to people’s car windows indicates more public Obama support of late.
Most likely, it’s pull from the national trend toward Obama. Everyone likes a winner, and Obama sure seems like he’ll be one. Folks here are more comfortable with Obama and Biden after feeling ignored by the lack of primary campaigning here. Biden held a rally here last Friday which was enthusiastically attended. And early voting has been busy here (absent more machine vote flipping, anyway) for Dem GOTV efforts.
Moreover, folks are disgusted with McCain/Palin. Even NASCAR fans. Familiarity is breeding contempt.
The Washington Times, of all places, had an article recently interviewing folks in Barrackville, WV — a town I know too well from my prosecutor days. Here’s a sampling:
Seven October polls of West Virginia voters average out to a single-digit lead for Mr. McCain, with most showing the Republican in the lead, one showing the men tied and another putting the Democrat ahead. President Bush won the state by 13 percentage points in 2004….
Rose Munro, a single mother who frequently must choose between buying groceries and paying the electricity bill, at first didn’t want to hear any political talk….
But Miss Munro said, "The Republicans have done nothing. … If I had to choose, it would be Obama even though I’m not too thrilled with either one of their campaigns."
Ruth Marcus finds similar folks in Mingo and Jackson counties, all breaking down along economic and internet rumor-mongering ignorance lines mostly. The common thread among these articles and my conversations is scant enthusiasm for McCain, even among "supporters" it’s tepid. McCain fails to inspire, he offers continuity of failure at a time when people desperately want change.
No one wants to continue getting screwed. It’s that simple.
Can Obama close the deal here and elsewhere with blue collar voters? We’re about to find out, although as this WV public radio piece shows, it’s by no means a sure thing. Here in WV, I feel a squeaker coming on…in the meantime, let’s all get to work!

What good news. I know I am quite not objective, but it seems to me the Repubs are saying a record number of stupid things. Last night, Gergen was almost screaming about why, at this stage in the fight, is the Mc campaign still talking about wardrobe. Who know, David.
Thanks for keeping us informed, Christy.
“The surge is working”?
Go West Virginia! Make Peanut’s Mom Proud!!!!
Christy, What do you think about the polls and what you are hearing? The lines in Georgia are still long. A new polling place opened yesterday near me and the lines were 3 hours long.
Morning Christy,
A week from tomorrow it is over – NOW IS THE TIME TO GET ER DONE
My wife tried to vote yesterday in Cobb Co. The line was almost 1/4 mile. Since she had our 7-week old with her, she was going to try again this morning.
Christy – with both Junior Johnson and Dean Smith endorsing Obama, NC should definitely turn blue, as well!
If we could just get Rich Rodriguez to endorse McCain/Palin,
Obama would win West Virginia in a landslide.
I have a confession.
I’m a car racing fan, bred on formula one and road racing, I have to say that NASCAR became a guilty pleasure. The racing is quite amazing, the personalities and the fan I can tolerate.
Junior Johnson’s missive will surely have an impact in NC. The base is McCain’s, we all know that. But, certain independents who haven’t made up their minds will read this and react positively. Having read a bit on JJ, I’m flabbergasted he decided to go public with this. The man has guts.
Oh gods. I hope it isn’t that bad in michigan on tuesday. >_
I’m expecting lines, but 1/4 of a mile? wow.
Don’t the majority of independent voters break for the winner normally?
Sure Conventional Wisdom says that Obama being African American cancels that out.
But does the CW have any facts to back this up?
My plan is to go around two when moms are picking up their children from school. I’m not sure that will work. Unfortunately, long lines near us are not a good thing.
Bring popcorn in an Obama bowl & distribute it to those in line.
I’ve had the occasion to travel the highways of central and western Virginia over the last couple of months, and I have just recently seen a significant transformation in signage – from almost all McCain, except along US 29, to an almost even balance between McCain and Obama almost everywhere. McCain’s signs tend to be physically bigger, but those lovely Obama-Warner-Periello makers have sprouted like flowers amidst the Autumn blush on the trees. I believe Obama is pacing McCain in rural areas around the country, unlike the uneven result we saw in 2004. Here’s to saying goodbye to Virgil the Grifter.
Morning all — thanks heaven for caffeinated, warm beverages. That’s all I’m saying. We may get snow today. brrrrrr….
Not usually a good thing here, either. Tom Price’s district. Although, in my neighborhood, before this year, I have never seen a single Dem yard sign, but lots of Reps. This year it’s tied, 3-3, not counting mine.
OT – MSNBC reporting that McLame is calling for senator Toobz to step down.
johnny is gonna be *such* a hit when he returns to the Senate….
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Oh man. That is SO true!
Most places prevent electioneering within so many feet of the line. But bringing a snack supply is likely a really good plan if you are expecting long lines in your area. A better plan? Try to vote early if you can…
May be a bit hard to do that. I’ll have ot be to work at 11am that morning. I’d rather give myself several hours of time in the early morning to vote instead of just 90 minutes to wait in line and get stuck outside when the polls close after i get out of work at 7pm.
Which means up at ohdarkthirty (and i am not much of a morning person).
Obama speech live on MSNBC/CNN now.
Yikes we need ET to start a recall election of Sarah Palin before Sarah can name his successor in the Senate in case we lose.
I too am a life long racing fan. F1 is still it for me but I watch NASCAR every weekend and have for many years. Junior Johnson is revered in the south east beyond anything most of us can imagine. I think his speaking out for Obama will have an impact far beyond North Carolina.
Is that where they take gasoline and turn it into noise?
My daddy was from Indianapolis and I grew up watching lots of car racing with him. If her were alive and still a conservative Republican, Junior’s endorsement would have meant something to him. ‘Course, my sister and I turned mom and dad around years ago.
When he was at the end, in the hospital and had lost all mobility, I’d always look for a car race on tv to watch with him and whisper in his ear: be the race car, jimmy. Just Zoom.
homemade notes taped to people’s car windows indicates more public Obama support of late.
Is that a WV thing? Not knocking it, don’t get me wrong. I’ve just never heard of that. it’s actually kinda cool.
No.
Most undecideds end up voting for the candidate they consider “safe.” The reason this election is so hard to predict is what “safe” means – to some prejudiced people, safe is someone white. On the other hand, a poor economy makes a Democrat safe; ever since FDR Dems have been seen as the party that is better for working stiffs during hard times. This is why the bad economic news is actually good for Obama.
New post upstairs…
Did you know that Obama has an office on Hwy. 92 near the Home Depot in Roswell?
LOL. I have a good friends who are UM grads. They were not happy with the RichRod pick and now feel vindicated given the Wolverines’ struggles (karma’s a b*tch).
They’re also rabid Dems and I was teasing them last weekend about the “better” meaning of “Go Blue”.
Not so much a WV thing, but an indication of how rapidly the local Obama campaign office keeps running out of signs and bumper stickers. I’ve been trying to get an Obama sign for our yard for over a month with no luck. The poor folks across the street had theirs stolen — but they made a homemade one and popped it right back out on the lawn over the weekend.
Good morning.
I read last night that Alaska has a special election in this case. No Palin appointment. I bet she is not “the most popular governor in the US” any longer.
Our local Fox idiot Radio was really in a rant about how Palin has been treated. That she was the great blessing & life in the campaign, a real winner, and handlers really screwed up. This is a very right wing early program I thought I would check and got an earful. They are placing all the blame on the McIdiot people; callers seemed to agree. (Not sure, I didn’t listen for long.)
Wow, I’m balling now. Thanks, wonderful story.
That’s been the Bill Kristol line on this. He’s decided to throw McCain — and especially Nicole Wallace, the campaign spokesperson — to the ravenous blame wolves because he’s one of the folks who was pushing Palin all along. Gotta save his own tattered reputation above all else, I suppose — but it’s creating an even wider rift between GOP factions…oh, darn. *G*
Good for them. My Nazi homeowners’ associoation doesn’t allow lawn signs. I don’t think signs in the window are allowed either. Free speech? What’s that?
Christy, The AJC had an article that said some folks are putting roofing tar and other things(think of a dog) on signs to discourage theft.
C’est rien.
Many of my better stories are about him. As I said at his service, anything good that I do or share in this life is because of him.
Wow, just sick about it./s I hope Kristol gets run out of town…with his smirky looking down his nose. Thanks
I have a friend in FL who homowner’s association would not allow signs. Her friend put one up and waited until she got the letter to take it down. She then passed it on to another friend who put it up and waited until she got the letter and so on. I don’t know if they are still passing the sign around. In my old house I put a Kerry sign in the window.
That is so good. Here in Austin we had a big dust-up about UT not allowing signs in dorm windows, etc. There was quite a student outrage, and administration backed down…said they would revisit the policy. I was surprised to learn there had ever been such a limitation because the campus has always been quite active.
Here in NH things are looking pretty stout for obama. The southern tier of the state that usually votes the “no tax” route is now feeling the pinch of the gooper financial meltdown and from all indications has turned against McShitHead. Polls now show obama with a double digit lead. There is no doubt that a fairly large number will vote libertarian which will cut into the gooper total. Here’s hoping.
Let’s hope. I don’t think there will be a country to salvage after a Palin/McCain presidency.
I think I’d have to have a set of candidate signs that I kept popping up in every window of my vehicle when I parked it in my driveway under those “no sign” circumstances. Plus, I’d make myself a regular fixture to gripe about it at every homeowner’s association meeting, including filing grievances in writing with them, until counsel for the association and the board of directors for the development had to address, in detail, why their policy which violated my first amendment rights was actually legal.
I’d make their lives absolutely miserable along with every friend in the development I could muster up. In my experience, folks who run for homeowners association boards don’t like to be shown up as being dictatorial ignoramuses. *g* And this would be a perfect issue on which to do this.
Or I’d run for the board precisely to bring it up at every damned meeting. *G* I’m just irritating that way, I suppose…
My son was driving in WV and stopped at a truck stop for breakfast – and a campaign ad was on the TV. He overheard a question from a group of truck drivers = “Since when are you going to make more than $250,000?”
I said that made me very happy and to keep picking up signals.
I am going to try to sign off, or, will someone please push me out the door? Have a good day…
Funny how actual voters don’t seem to be buying the crapola that Team McCain keeps on shoveling, isn’t it? Bless their hearts…
I am still not happy about the apparent non-response of Obama’s campaign support lawyers to the vote flipping in PA, OH, and WV so far. I haven’t seen anything actively done.
The Bradblog, Bradblog, has addressed this lack of lawyers problem.
There are plenty of lawyers on it — the reason you haven’t seen anything in the media is because there isn’t any concrete anything to report as yet. But I do know that the WV Dem party folks have been following this pretty closely with county supervisors — there just aren’t any solid answers on the problem as yet.
I believe the biggest failure from the Democratic party in this election as in past ones is that they don’t educate the working class people who is in their best interest. The GOP is 100% anti union. They were against raising the minimum wage. Their Lord and Savior Reagan did more harm to labor unions then anybody with the firing of the air traffic controllers. If your against labor unions and raising minimum wages then your 100% against the poor and middle class. But you never here any of this from the Democrats. There is no way West Virginia or the southern states or any state for that matter should vote Republican for the simple reason that if you punch a time card the GOP hates your guts.
I know this is way epu’d – but — I’m afraid the reason nobody tries to do this much is that it’s too late. The propaganda has been going on for generations here that unions are bad, bad, bad.
Southerners internalize it. I was shocked when, 20+ years ago, I found myself in Oklahoma, seeing a lovely, very liberal (he had been the county’s only ‘hippie’ in the ’70’s, very contrary to the area he grew up in)man, who worked for progressive organizations, who startled me with his vehement denunciation of unions.
Nothing I could say could move him.. It’s been framed as right-to-work, right not-to-be-’forced-to-pay-dues for so many decades, I’m not sure it’s possible to reverse it.
Might have to call unions something else entirely, then maybe you could get past that knee-jerk reaction in the south.
