What amazes me about the Red State “reasons why McCain will win” list is that it basically amounts to magical thinking. It’s all stuff like “he’s ahead in state X, and state X always goes for the winner.” It’s like someone talking about their lucky shirt or something — it’s completely irrational.

The perceived need to appease the loopier beliefs of racist and/or fundie Southerners (and their inbred colleagues in the rest of the country) has been a cornerstone of national campaign strategies since as long as I can remember, giving the worst people a measure of power over us all.

Now, as of next week, the main political force of that whole region (or at least, that kind of sensibility) is kaput. For a lot of these people, it’s going to be like their world collapsed. And they’re not going to be civil about it.

When the Rs blather about riots in the streets after the election, they are, as usual, projecting. Seriously, things could get dangerous.

I know it takes vastly more balls to be a liberal in a place like Alabama than it does here, even at the best of times.

This may not be the best of times. Be careful, y’all.

I did not understand the town until the student guide for the parents tour on accepted students’ weekend, in reponse to my Q, said: “You won’t understand this, but I grew up in Wellesley, MA, and Claremont is the Wellesley of the west.” Having gone to Wellesley College, I instantly knew exactly what he was talking about. The main analogy was social: high incomes, snooty, dry town, so no retaurants. But I’d imagine the political scene might be similar. Votes D but not very progressive.
