As if we needed more objective proof of how totally divorced from reality the wingnutosphere is — and what an increasingly tiny fringe of the American political landscape they currently occupy — check out the results of a Right Wing News poll of 240 wingnut bloggers.
1) Who do you think is going to win the election?
A) John McCain: 53% (39)
B) Barack Obama: 47% (34)
Current Intrade prices: Obama 87.8, McSame 12.1.
2) Do you think Sarah Palin has been a plus or a minus to the ticket?
A) Minus: 9% (7)
B) Plus: 91% (68)
Just look at that number. Over 90% of these wingtards actually believe Palin’s helping McCain. Meanwhile, back on planet Earth…
Next.
6) Do you think Barack Obama is…
A) Honest (Yes or no?)
Yes: 11% (8)
No: 89% (66)B) Patriotic (Yes or no?)
Yes: 24% (18)
No: 76% (57)C) Qualified to be President (Yes or no?)
Yes: 12% (9)
No: 88% (66)
Newsweek Poll (10/9): Obama: Favorable 62/Unfavorable 32, Honest and trustworthy 62/31, Shares your values 59/37, Right judgement to be a good presdient 66/28.
Q.E.D.
Sure, it’s fun to point out how batshit crazy and out of it they all are, but there’s more to it. The really key part is — they’re not only about to get their asses kicked again (remember 2006?) — but they have no idea why. They’re completely out of touch with independents. And as a result, they’ll claim McSame lost because he didn’t go hard right enough. Like:
4) The Republican Party did poorly in the 2006 election and even if McCain wins is on track to do poorly again in this year’s Congressional races. If you had to choose between these two options, do you think that’s because they were…
A) Too conservative: 9% (7)
B) Not conservative enough: 91% (67)
Brain dead.

So, do Cheetos cause drain bamage? Or is it genetic?
Perhaps we should work hard after the election to push the notion that John McCain lost because he tried to align with Obama on key issues. “There was no real difference in policy,” we can say, “and so voters picked the younger charismatic guy.” It’s not true, of course, but if we can prolong their delusion, we should.
Is that Joe the Plumber in the picture? Or one of those skinheads in the 88-14-O plot?
Palin has a future in televangelism.
that’s the demographic.
since they do not get it and will not change, this means at least another cycle of progressive wins
We can only hope that the wingnuts are firmly relegated to the margins and remain there. About damn time people come to their senses.
Absolutely.
Cannot. Stop. Laughing.
What happens to the nutters when the intellectual conservatives try to regroup?
Agree! In televangelism she can spout all the fundamentalist christian dogma she wants, and make a ton of money doing it.
“respect are country”?!?!?!?
Out of touch? Nahhh.
Fucking dumb as rocks? Uh-huh.
Answering my own question – perhaps the nutters get behind Palin/Huckabee in 2012.
That isn’t delusional, that is just batshit crazy, separated from reality as it exists crazy, a taco shy of a combination plate, one sip of milk left in the carton crazy, no sugar in the lemonade crazy
The article linked said that 240 were contacted and 76 responded
Sure is fun.
I hope Obama wins as big as everyone thinks. One problem with representative democracy is that no one really knows where anyone stands. We see a poll saying 70% of the people disapprove of George Bush. Doesn’t seem to matter. It’s also true that our electoral process leaves lots to be desired. A case can be made that both the 2000 and 2004 elections were gamed. We are so far from being out of the woods.
They’re just loyal Goopers. What did you expect before the election?
You know, William F. Buckley was right. Paraphrasing, he said he had spent his entire career separating the kooks from the real conservatives. With his demise, the kooks won.
Until the Republican party weeds out the kooks and gets to the point where they don’t allow the Dobsons of this word to administer the litmus test of who runs for office, they are going to lose.
That dog won’t hunt any more.
Do you think the Titanic is:
(a)Too sinkable 9%
(b) Not sinkable enough! 91%
To be that out of it — to that degree — on Palin is unexpected. Even for these crazies.
Continue wandering rightward, little wingnuts. It’s over that way you’ll find electoral success.
Not conservative enough John is protorture, prowar, protax cuts for the rich, and he would rather mother die than get an abortion what else is there?
Just what does John have to do to win the base?
They’re completely out of touch with independents. And as a result, they’ll claim McSame lost because he didn’t go hard right enough.
Or the election was stolen by ACORN! (Well, they’ll probably blame it both.)
Icebergs:
(a) 10% above the water: 10%
(b) 90% above the water: 90%
Brain dead or Living Dead, the Republics must be removed from power if this Nation is to survive. Let them inbreed in the South.
For the real wingers it’s not just about politics, it’s about god and god is on their side so how can they be wrong. Magical thinking.
and then she can get the true believers to pay for her shopping sprees in Gomorrah-on-Hudso.
Like the drunk at the party, who thought that if he only said it one more time, and a little bit louder, surely everyone would understand.
Does. Not. Compute.
Does. Not. Compute.
Does. Not. Compute.
Why are they so out of touch? When I was a boy my family belonged to what you’all would call a wingnut church. No drinking, smoking, doctors, medicine, or swearing and we read the Bible everyday. Everything around us was the devil’s lie; we believed nothing if it didn’t come from the Bible or our leader. We only spoke to one another. I was seriously encouraged to date Sunday school girls. We even had our own newspaper. Otherwise, contact with others was very limited. and, remember, what did get through was a lie from the devil.
If I hadn’t been born and brought up with it, now, many years later, it would be hard for me to believe that people live that.
Well, they do. And, that’s where those data come from.
That poll reminds me of old German soldiers discussing how they could have won the war. The problem was not how the war was fought but that it was fought. With these guys, it was not the color of the lipstick or how much was used, it was that they still had a pig (the record of the last 8 years).
This is a mix of the brain-dead AND those suffering from the RWA personality disorder (google it – it’s amazing). RightWing Authority personality types can’t be swayed from their chosen crusade or beliefs, no matter what. And sadly, these types make up approximately 25% of any given population. Rove sure knew how to use this batch. The God card.
Now, they believe everything the right wing says. This must be confusing ever since McCain got in, being a moderate and all.
I hope whatever happens, somehow they become marginalized again (because they are by definition, crazy) and go back under their rocks. It’s a shame Rove & Co. decided to use them because they really did harm the country by giving these paranoid haters a platform and a voice.
I think the snag was that McCain never came out strongly enough for witch burning.
I think most of the 240 wingnut bloggers were not raised that way, nor was my son, who would probably be with the majority in every category, so the problem is much wider than you indicate.
How did you escape?
My question to you is, how did you break loose from that restrictive existence! Must have taken an iron will!
Not fair to us southerners. There are wingnuts everywhere. I have seen more skinheads and Confederate flags in rural ME than here in NC …. and what about Idaho? :-(
The problem is McCain is just a loser. Seems to have gotten the 2d marriage right, and has silver spoons but anything he was in charge of, not so much.
We know where people stand in ways other than polls, though. Look at the money Obama has gotten, and the number of contributors. Look at the crowds. Here in SoCal, I’ve seen McCain/Palin lawn signs (though generally not in front of houses, just on street corners) but no bumper stickers. Lots of Obama bumper stickers and yard signs in front of houses.
This is huge!
Hate radio. When I drive from Montréal to Hamilton Ontario, I listen to am radio. Same talking point, repeated, over and over. I guess they get that confirmation by getting the same disinformation by six different blowhards every day…
Try audio books for your long drives.
While banking, I was talking with a teller who told me she had not decided on a candidate & was “praying on it” – my husband & I both left shaking our heads, didn’t know God could vote.
For anyone who didn’t see it, David Sedaris has a great takedown of the fabled “undecided voter” in this week’s New Yorker:
The wingnuts have no reservations as to which meal to order.
I fell in love with an outsider my mother actually liked and encouraged. After we were married, my wife said, “NO MORE! You are going to have that collapsed lung looked at!” And, later on, she went to a church of her own thinking with our children and left me home alone. One Sunday I decided to go along with her and half way through the sermon realized that what I had lived through was insanity.
((((hychka))))
What an interesting story. Good on you.
Well, yeah — but the South is the only solidly-GOP part of the country. Every other region is collapsing, but not the South.
Denial is a wonderful thing. Right up until … you smash into reality.
BT,
Thanks for this. I should probably re-post my Antichrist comment @ 98 from Morning Swim…
This puts the crazy mailers all in perspective.
Don’t you think that the South is part of this “Nation?” Don’t write off the liberal Democratic part of the South if you please. As far as I’m concerned, they can breed right where they are.
Wingnuttery is not unique to the south, it’s just heavily concentrated there.
Here’s a wingnut wake-up call they use every morning (and at night called ‘The Factor”):
http://www.cocoapuffs.com/
Proof 6-degrees of separation from reality actually works… as long as they stay there….
Hoping to see NC turn blue while ridding itself of Liddy Dole.
Please tell me that the end of the story is,”…and they lived happily ever after!”
That’s not so bad.
The Plainview (TX) Daily Herald is polling on ‘who do you think will be our next president’. It’s running about 2/3 McCain and about 1/3 Obama, with a small percentage of real optimists holding out for Barr.
You and me both! North Carolinian here.
Where is it that you live that is so fucking enlightened?
Here in California as well.
Only in some parts. Not in the state as a whole.
Looks like Charlie Brown might pull it out.
If they are not elected and Ted Stevens wins re election and has to be voted out of the Senate, watch Palin promote herself to the senate for the Washington experience.
She will not do or say anything now to diminish her chances of replacing Stevens.
She will promote herself right into 2012
But look at NC and GA – NC on the verge of turning blue. GA has gone from deep red to very pale pink. Conservatism is collapsing everywhere. It just has farther to fall here in the south.
That’s all the more reason not to write off the south. What we need is more open dialogue about how the Republicans have coopted people’s religion and fears to obscure the GOP’s actual stances on issues. Also, we need resources and voter education.
NC is slowly turning blue….and much of the thanks can be given to Dean and to the 50 state strategy. My point was I haven’t noticed anyone suggesting giving up on other red presidential areas like CO etc.
Yep. Economic reality is my model. So when times are good, people feel free to let their less rational side guide their voting habits, but when times are really tough, not so much.
Hmm what makes you say not the whole state? San diego is ripe with them. Orange county (between LA and San Diego) is full of them. The Inland Empire (on your way out towards Vegas) is fullof them and the farming belts going up towards SF. We are ripe with repubs it is just that the dem areas are more concentrated with people an the repub tend to be more concentrated with farm animals and groves
Well, we are still writing the story together and it isn’t over yet. What with all this economic trouble I’d like to sock away some more for retirement fun. The children and grandchildren are a never ending source of wonder. And, our “bucket list” has quite a few lines to get scratched off.
Hopefully, Nov 4th, 2008 will live big in all our lives!!!
Yes, 50 state strategy was brilliant.
Also, I never understood why south got so red, considering in-migration from north.
OK, I was just going on the fact that the state as a whole mostly votes D.
Prop 8 has really smoked the wingnuts outta the closet up in NoCal. so to speak.
What part of NC?
We do for the most part but we are chock full-o-nuts here, as well.
I so love David Sedaris. That’s hilarious.
This is the state that brought you St. Ronnie Reagan and Ahnold, and Duncan Hunter and Duke Cunningham and…excuse me, I just threw up in my mouth a little..
Well that’s a truly great story, the kind I like to hear. Congrats to both of you and the blessings you call children, no matter how old they are.
As I have said before, the Dems simply wrote the south off as a bunch of idiots and rednecks and the people knew and resented it. There are plenty of progressives in the south and to concede that area to the wingnuts is foolish. We will always need every vote we can get. The Mississippi senatorial election is the one to watch in the south this time. R incumbent with Musgrove (D) just 2 points behind a couple of days ago. We can’t let the progressives in the south down now.
the real part? :P
I can imagine. They have come out the woodwork here as well. pretty damn frightening
Re David Sedaris — a product of Raleigh, NC (where Obama will be tomorrow). *g*
I have a very sad OT, Natalie Boisvert Williams has just informed us that her mother, Marie Roget has died.
Holidays on Ice is pure genius.
I don’t think we should concede anything. I’m a big believer in a 50-state party.
RIP Peace pup, Marie Roget
(((Marie’s family)))
Never understood the Raygun attraction, CA or nationally. Ahnold I interpreted as no competition & plenty of recognition, but as I’m on the other coast, those are just very casual observations.
ha!
That is very sad news.
Rest in peace, Marie.
Yes, and the fact that the Ds wrote off the south helped turn it into even more of a charicature. In other words, contributed to a downward spiral from D POV. Stooopid.
Am watching all the senator races in the south & hoping.
Marie Roget, RIP {{{{{Her family}}}}}
You’ve never been to Orange County, then. Wow. Talk about true believers. They still praise Nixon there.
Yes, I think Arnold is a fluke, but his predecessor was just so lame and everyone was angry about getting screwed by Enron.
What can I say? It’s a very big state. It’s sometimes hard to wrap my head around how small and nimble some East Coast states are. We’re more like a barge.
I know people who met Ronnie when he was governor and said that he was one of the most charming people they had ever known – and these were Dems. They all detested Nancy – even Rs.
Conservatives are of two camps: the duncecaps over at the Corner, the dittoheads, stalkin’ Malkins, et al, and, on the other hand, the House of Lords crew who to their good name are at least not know nothing kneejerk whackjobs, simply the ones who continue to believe Social Darwinism is sound fiscal policy. It’s been interesting to watch the screws loosen over there, and it does strike me there’s a cautionary tale for netroots.
Of course the biggest joke from our point of view is that Obama is some flaming Marxist liberal; most of us know people who are (that is if we ourselves don’t prize such a claim), and I’m sure speak with such friends who wax eloquent, Naderly, and what’s more we sympathize.
In an era when states leaning for McCain on the tv computer maps are decidedly pinko (of course those leaning Obama are lavendar–ah the symbolism of color, my true blue firepups), it would be good to remember to celebrate diversity and root for the 10-12% of those guys who have not drunk the kool-aid in such volume.
My son went to college in Claremont, but when I visited we went to Santa Monica.
Very sad news indeed. My deepest condolensces to Marie’s family. (((((Marie Roget))))
No repubs there LOL That is lib central for southern cal *G*
santa monica, that is
I did not understand the town until the student guide for the parents tour on accepted students’ weekend, in reponse to my Q, said: “You won’t understand this, but I grew up in Wellesley, MA, and Claremont is the Wellesley of the west.” Having gone to Wellesley College, I instantly knew exactly what he was talking about. The main analogy was social: high incomes, snooty, dry town, so no retaurants. But I’d imagine the political scene might be similar. Votes D but not very progressive.
The perceived need to appease the loopier beliefs of racist and/or fundie Southerners (and their inbred colleagues in the rest of the country) has been a cornerstone of national campaign strategies since as long as I can remember, giving the worst people a measure of power over us all.
Now, as of next week, the main political force of that whole region (or at least, that kind of sensibility) is kaput. For a lot of these people, it’s going to be like their world collapsed. And they’re not going to be civil about it.
When the Rs blather about riots in the streets after the election, they are, as usual, projecting. Seriously, things could get dangerous.
I know it takes vastly more balls to be a liberal in a place like Alabama than it does here, even at the best of times.
This may not be the best of times. Be careful, y’all.
true. the hippies/progressives are in santa monica. Great place to live but expensive and crowded as hell
A perfect example of a Republican pandering to religion — the odious Elizabeth Dole:
http://bluenc.com/elizabeth-do…..e-election
Amen. Finally scored an Obama yard sign and my elderly mother (although she and most of friends voted for him) doesn’t want me to put it out. She’s afraid.
Analysis: precise.
Advise: very wise.
“Advice”.
Making a habit of this, I am.
What amazes me about the Red State “reasons why McCain will win” list is that it basically amounts to magical thinking. It’s all stuff like “he’s ahead in state X, and state X always goes for the winner.” It’s like someone talking about their lucky shirt or something — it’s completely irrational.
If I follow you and if stories about her house built for free can be proven, that will mean two Alaska Senators will be indicted felons and need to be expelled. What a twofer!
They don’t do rational.
