So, where to the GOPers fit? In Washington State all the local candidates told the Secretary of State to list them as GOP rather than Republican. The Dems sued and lost. The GOPers said everyone knew that GOP = Rethug. So after the court case, they did an informal survey on the street. Lo and behold, over half of the people said they thought GOP was a third party.

Think the Rethugs knew that going in? Nah! NOT!

Bring troops home, veterans say

Jon Kuniholm, who lost his right arm in an explosion in Iraq nearly four years ago, came to Fayetteville on Tuesday to urge people to vote for the Democratic candidate who has pledged to withdraw troops from Iraq within 16 months.

“Barack Obama is being straight with the American people about what needs to happen,” he said.

Kuniholm, a 37-year-old former Marine who now lives in Durham, was one of the veterans who spoke at a “Set the Record Straight” event at the Cumberland County Democratic Party offices. He used a powered hook for a right arm.

The other reasons he supports Obama, he said, are his record on veterans issues and strong stance against torture of enemy combatants.

The rally was organized to help counter Republican presidential candidate John McCain’s speech later that day at the Crown Coliseum.

I listened to Bob Gates tonight on C-SPAN and I don’t think he’s right for Sec. of Def., but his commitment to reducing nukes and controlling them seems solid and if there’s use for him on that front, then he might be some of that experience the next administration could carry forward.

With regard to the trial balloon or whatever it was where Willie Brown blogged about DiFi perhaps wanting to be gov of CA, I wonder if, in the spirit of those who would help John Murtha, the Libs here and about would help her get elected IF they had some input to whomever would be appointed to her senate seat (if that’s how it would work).

Are Dems united enough that Libs would help DiFi become CA gov so Libs can get a senator they like?

I’m still torn about suggesting Colin Powell for Sec. of Def. Guessing at what’s coming up I don’t know. He’s damaged goods, but has a record of good service and wants to redeem himself. On top of that it’s really not entirely clear just what Obama would want to do from Afghanistan. There’s really a question what Brzezinski and Rice might want us to do and what Obama might go for. Of course there’s Al Qaeda, but if bin Laden and crew are in Waziristan it could be a real mess.

As with 9/11 I suggest a lot of study before committing to any plans after shifting from Iraq to Afghanistan.

On the missile defense system Bush put in the Czech Republic (or was it Poland?) there is worry in Russia and Gates didn’t seem properly concerned with getting along. I’d suggest some rethinking of the placement of such a system or some other way of accomodating the Russians nervousness.

There hasn’t been a tremendous lot of talk about foreign policy during this campaign, but there is no doubt it’s as much of a mess as our domestic scene. Bush has a lot of splainin’ to do.

Would be fun to find out on election night that some of our favorite goopers will be persuing other career interests.
