  • Palin on Stevens: Big Oil corrupts politics, vote Republican.
  • McCain in Ohio: the economy sucks, vote Republican.
  • Fundies attack Obama with direct mail.
  • Obama’s closing argument.
  • Bushies go appeasement in Afghanistan.
  • Like the Germans defending Berlin: RNC to buy ads in Montana.
  • They’ll be greeted as liberators in Seattle — Condi to the Niners?

It would make sense for Condi to go to the Niners. It’s really hard to imagine someone who has spent the past eight years peddling lies going back into the academic world. She won’t fare well there. Her position at Stanford is tenured, but I suspect her working conditions there won’t be too good if the International Criminal Court starts looking her way.

No machines in FL, it’s all paper ballot (more like heavy card stock) with optical scanners. As of 5am yesterday 1,016,000 had voted early, 51% Dems, 33% Rethugs, 16% other. Don’t be countin’ Obama out in FL.

we’re fightin’ a good fight. Jim White had some distubimng news about the voter turnout of the college kids in gainesville but the EV turnout up there seemed great. it’s good here, too. SExactly so. It’s gonna be very tough, but don’t write off FL yet. There’s an anti-gay amendment on teh ballot so the Jesus Fereaks will be out. But most of them come out anyway so I don’t think it’s going to help McCain that much. Barack’s rally with Bill Clinton in Kissimmee is going to be at 11 pm. I figure he’ll be running late. Sounds like fun. Can’t make it though.

Good observation. Hadn’t thought of that. I don’t think there will be much chance of early results from FL. it’s supposed to be very, very close and the I think polls close an hour later in the panhandle than the rest of the state because some of it is CST so they have to put off a call until 10 EST anyway.

Disagree. Early “projections”/results are not a good thing. People, regardless of party affiliation should have the right to vote in a free and fair election with every vote counted and with no knowledge of the results until every vote is in. Of course it is gratifying to see this 1,016,000 had voted early, 51% Dems, 33% Rethugs, 16% other. from Southern Dragon @ 21

Yeah, but at least in my county, unless there is a recount where the race is less than a tenth of a percent apart, then there isn’t an audit with manual counting of those ballots until after the final result is certified. Even then, it’s only in one randomly chosen precinct. That makes me think that something buried deep in the counting software (and unknown to everyone in the system, including my county Supervisor of Elections, who I regard to be top-notch a fair) could flip a significant number of votes that would not be detected until it is too late. I’d really like to see the law require that a few precincts have a subset of ballots (say 5% of those cast in the precinct) manually counted within 48 hours of election day to serve as a gauge to make sure nothing funny has happened.

we really don’t know the early voting results by candidate. I’d have to check. they think Obama might do better than democrats had in the past because the younger Cuban voters aren’t as conservative or hard-line as their parents or grandparents. But with any group of young people, i guess the thing is to get them out to vote.

I’m not worried about scanners. They’re just large versions of the scanners used in colleges with ScanTrons, those little sheets that look like the sheets you fill out for Lotto. The Rethug legislature did its best to make sure hand recounts don’t occur. There’s enough pressure that that legislation may get changed. I’m really not concerned with them stealin’ the vote here this time.

what we’re going to do is apply a 5.8 point penalty to Stevens’ numbers in Alaska. Since the race was a toss-up before, this puts him about 6 points behind overall, making Mark Begich an 87 percent favorite to take his seat. That seems conservative to me, frankly, given that even the guys at RedState are abandoning Stevens, but it’s what we’ll run with until there’s some polling out.

Assuming that Stevens loses his race, how much does this help the Democrats’ chances of picking up a 60-seat caucus? Well, it certianly helps some. But this is a race that the Democrats were probably going to win if they had a reasonably good night overall.

http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/

I forgot all about Alaska Florida and Indiana should be done counting their votes before Alaska votes unless its real real close Sarah might lose her home state!

A new pair of Research 2000 polls show the Diaz-Balart brothers, two right-wing GOP Congressmen from Florida, in tight races for re-election. Lincoln Diaz-Balart has a 45%-44% edge over Democrat Raul Martinez, and Mario Diaz-Balart leads Democrat Joe Garcia 46%-43%, with a ±5% margin of error on both polls.

plus, there are scattered reports coming out of both districts of the usual disgusting Republic tricks –

Sunday was glorious but I had to be inside with a 4 hour meeting of SUNY-New Paltz Foundation Finance Committee. Lot’s of detailed stuff on the agenda for this mini-retreat (at my house), that couldn’t be done in a full formal meeting. But one of the most important was to talk down a new member who’s a hedge fund manager who thinks we ought to do some “alternative investments” with the endowment. Mission accomplished. He stopped being passive aggressive, addressed the issues straightforwardly (and interestingly, but not surprisingly, was light on details; his assignment was to get them to us), and seemed to take me seriously, instead of trying to pull rank & browbeat me. Anyone who hasn’t listened to the entire of Biden’s controversial “Obama will be challenged” talk at the fundraiser would do well to check Attaturk’s link in the prior post. You’ll have to go to a second link, which is Fox, to hear it, but it’s worth it. It’s a little scary, but is a realistic plea for understanding among Democratic contributors to stand by Obama while he tries to dig us out of the hole Bush has dug. It’s a warning that it won’t be fun and popular, but hopefully can be done.

Also, I had the home court advantage. Didn’t consciously realize I did that until this morning when I had to write it down.

BT,

Thanks for the swim this AM!

IRT the fundie mailer…It amazes me…First Al Gore was depicted in fundie mailers and stupid chain emails as the AntiChrist. And we are still here. Then John Kerry was, you guessed it, depicted as the AntiChrist, and we are still here. Now, Obama is depicted as the AntiChrist…Hmmm, and interesting pattern…Each one of these individuals is a…wait…I know the answer…oh that’s it…DEMOCRAT.

After eight years of the supposed “savior candidate” that Dobson annointed, two wars-economy in the tanker-committing torture-breaking the law-Bush, I do not think anyone should believe such lies. It is a sin to bare false witness. I have yet to see published written apologies to Gore, Kerry or Obama for defaming their character and stating they were the AntiChrist. No one has confessed their sins on this…

So they keep committing the sin…stirring fear…

The Bible clarifies that perfect love drives out fear (1Jn 4:18).

I take peace in knowing that God knows how to deal with unrepenting, repeated sin.
