I had an odd thought the other day.

There’s a whole class of puzzles based around the idea that the responses you’d expect from a dishonest / ill-intentioned person are identical to what you’d expect from an honest, well-meaning person in a variety of circumstances (you ask “Are you going to mug me?” and the saint and the mugger will both say “No, of course not!”)

Of course, the whole spectrum from scammers to sociopaths know this, and try to maneuver things so that it will be as hard as possible to discern (or at least prove) which category they belong to. If there’s some way you could in theory tell which were which, they try to get there first and muddy the waters so you can’t.

So supposing there were a cabal that was planning on assassinating Obama, and wanted to get themselves some of that “plausible denyability” they’ve heard so much about. Suppose they were real smart and planning ahead.

Think about how they’d do it. And then ask yourself: how would their conduct differ from that of the McCain campaign?

What I wrote pertains to journalistic standards regarding constitutional protections that mean nothing unless they apply to all defendents and about which we must remain especially vigilant given the Bush administration’s reckless disregard of those protections.
