After reading Altemeyer’s The Authoritarians (free pdf download), I’m not optimistic about their numbers. Seems they need improved authoritarian leaders.

I’ll have to read it. I think Americans, as a whole, are sick of authoritarian leaders right about now. Look where they have led us.

In one hour the European markets open. Hong Kong down 14%. DOW premarket dowm 281 points. The recession is in the markets for 1-2 years. Not much positive news except last month housing sales were up (lot of foreclosure).
This will be a rough ride for investors and retirement funds.
The middle class pays for the wild speculation and the &7 trillion bailouts by central banks. We were conned by the neocons.

You have that right. I was reading up earlier on the Commodities Modernization Act of 2000 that was the starting gun for this fiasco.

John Dean introduced me to Altemeyer, who has spent years researching the authoritarian personality. He’s faculty at a Canadian university and has managed to create a remarkably readable book, which he kindly offers gratis.

It’s one of the most helpful things I’ve read in years. Even his foot notes
are engaging. YMMV.

Try reading the legal eagles explanation of the Commodities Modernization Act of 2000, it will make your blood boil. Basically, our Congress opened up the Casino that led to this disaster.

Google the Commodities Modernization Act of 2000, read on and your head will spin and your blood pressure will climb. Basically, our Congress allowed these guys to bet, and I don’t mean metaphorically, I mean bet on the direction of anything, with no regulations at all.

Yes. I resd Dean’s book where he refers to Altemeyer. I got mine ( authoritarianism explained) in the 60’s from Jean Genet’s The Balcony a play on the institutions of western civilization. Judge, Police, General and Politician who all demand a loyalty bred of authoritarianism. It is interesting to watch revolutions recreate authoritarian classes…sadly.
I loved American individualism which is the opposite of what we have today, corporatism. I think the French hold their individualism and their language in high esteem.

Ya’know, I used to worry about the production part of that (mcpalin already took care of the ugly part) but after seeing the way his campaign has been run, no worries, mate. May not be all progressives want, but he *will* get things done…..solution: hire competent people.

The underlying concern in the markets is they are not orderly and less predictable which creates a harrowing environment for risk, Investors have capital earning a little but nothing like what some have earned.
So how do you restart the business growth cycle in the US. We offshored both production and jobs. Our consumersa are tapped out by the housing bubble when it burst. On top of that a huge layer of rot many times the housing equity has gone south as bad bets are called that were leveraged as much as 100 to 1 the wrong way. A dollar invested is now worth a penny.
Capital has been reduced by 50% in a year or so.
Disposable income that has been the engine of the economy has dried up and with it a huge hole in our economy like the huge storms recently in the gulf have done unprecenebted damage.
Thr offshore flow of energy capital is sucking our capital out of the market place exacerbating the credit crunch along with continued demand for banks and hedge funds to cover their bad bets. That is where our bail out money is going. Bail Baby Bail it is going to take a while. Bushco can take the credit for this world trdgedy.

That si the environment Obama has to start in. If he doesn’t get 60 in the senate is will be in bigtime difficulty. Big Oil does not want an energy tax nor does Big Coal if we do not get the carbon tax investors will not risk the big investments needed to get the 5,000,000 green jobs. The trillion spent to bail Wall Street and the banks were spent to remove Obama’s administrations access to fund the health safety net, the renewable enegy industry and money for the state governments to repair their highways, water and wastewater deteriorating infrastructure. Wastewater alone is a Trillion dollars. The grid and shrinking water resources I have not seen numbers on but it is big as the drought goes on.

Once you understand that these people are sohpisticated theives out to plunder they start looking very smart. They cut in the Dems to open the treaury for the teir banks. Europe’s markets open down around 5%…earlier the Hong Kong markets lost 14% equity today alone

Since Bushco bailed out AIG insurance for $85 billion now the other insurance companies want a bailout. They are essentially socializing themselves. Corporate welfare can be defined as fascism. The oligarchy needs it all nothing left for the citizens. Barack is supposed to extend unemployment benefits and expand food stamps so people can survive. With the state and local government budgets gone south and federal reciepts waninghow much can he do? Take the rap for the Bush administration? the press will be happy to deliver that message to joe six pack.
Temper your optimism with caution. The economy is still pretty big after 5 decades of growth but the disenfranchised sector is growing more rapidly than the economy. The unemployed, the underemployed and those at the poverty level or below are around 50 million americans. People without medical care close to homelessness or slim resources. In the inner city is is already bad.

World recession will deflate travel, restuarant abd tourism. Tourism tax reciepts will diminish. That’s bad for those jobs and government services.
Here on the CA coast that is bad news for a lot of locals.
Next year retail chains will go out of business. Commercial real estate will have bigger vacancies.

Only major assholes would cause this. Accontability should be demanded as this was orchestrated. It wasn’t dumb luck. Greenspan admitted that to committee last week.
