Sometimes, you have to be the change you want to see. I’ve got an inspirational example for everyone this morning.
Dr. Susan Love, who is a pioneer on so many fronts for women’s health and whose book on breast cancer and care has been the bible for so many women for quite a while, has begun a new project at Army of Women, aimed at finding the cause of breast cancer so we can stop it. The project matches healthy women, at risk women, and women who have dealt with breast cancer with researchers working on any number of research projects.
The video above is an interview with Dr. Love talking about the project.
She’s joined in this effort by the Avon Foundation. This is one of those ideas that is so simple, yet makes so much sense — you have researchers who can’t find enough healthy subjects, and you have women who want to help find a cure for their family and friends who have already had to endure breast cancer. Why not put them together and really shake things up? Give folks a proactive way to help find some desperately needed answers.
Every year, more than 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Giving a little blood and a tissue sample is a tiny price to pay to help find the cause and the cure for all of us.
I’ve signed up — for my mom who has already battled breast cancer once, for my cousin who died of it when I was small, for my daughter’s future, for my own — I’ve already had one precancerous lump removed. And also for Jane.
If you are a woman who is interested in participating in a study to help find a cause and a cure for breast cancer, you can sign up at armyofwomen.org. Just think — our generation could be the one that finds the cure. How awesome would that be? Also, get your regular mammograms and pap smears — my mom’s cancer was detected early because she was tested.
And just imagine for a moment, if each of us put our minds to solving the problems we see — really solving them, as in cause and effect, root of the problems — imagine where we’d all be. Pull up a chair…
PS – Bob Geiger has the Saturday funnies up. Hilarious.

G’morning, Christy and pups.
Early detection is our current best weapon against cancer. Late-stage cancer can be difficult (sometimes impossible) to beat. Prevention…oh, how I hope and pray for that breakthrough. Cause and cure. Let it be so.
Good morning, Christy and Firepups.
Can’t stay today. Got to go confront the St Pete PD and City Council on their stomping on the First Amendment to ensure that there aren’t any DFH’s interrupting the World Serious. I just hate gettin’ arrested on the weekend; tigers don’t like being fed by others.
Good morning, Christy. What a good idea!
What an inspiring woman this is. As a 56 year old woman who has not had a bout with this but knows women I love who have, I have signed up. Maybe I can help!
Love to all women facing this, you are not alone!
Cat In Seattle
ok Christy, I’m in. kind of amazing no one’s done this till now
((((barbara)))) – so good to have you with us this morning.
note to all: Hays County Sheriff caught the perps who wrecked TexBetsy’s friend’s car last week end – a 15 year old and two 12 yo’s. somewhat relieved it wasn’t some klan wannabe
Best of luck to you today.
(((barbara)))
It didn’t register until cbl2 popped me up side the head. Thanks, cbl2.
I’m hoping for a big turnout.
Colour me gone.
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.
Namaste
i don’t buy the explanation that researchers didn’t do the research because they couldn’t find people to participate in the studies. however, it is expensive and from what i’ve seen the research money wasn’t there – lots of money for treatment research but very little, for example, for looking at environmental correlations. maybe this is a way to lower those costs? if so, sounds great – and from the little bit on the page describing the research, the sister study looks both interesting and an good match for this project.
(((barbara)))
was wondering the same. but there will be studies of post-menopausal types. years ago my sis and I gave blood samples to a study as we were the only two of 12 girl cousins who hadn’t had breast cancer or pre cancerous conditions – so we never know when we may be called upon :D
Seems we’re in a small group that tends to look beyond sensationalism. Thanks for your stance and support.
please stay safe Dragon. will keep a light on for ya
I would mention that it is not only women that are victims. We males that have to try and understand when our loved ones are in the grip of this damned thing do have support groups as well and they can be found through your local cancer society. There is LOTS of support out there do not go through this alone.
Doing any kind of clinical study involving humans is expensive, and *much* harder to organize than trials with lab rats, mice, fruit flies, or growing cultures in petri dishes. You can’t call up your research supply house and say “Send me three cases of 25 ml pipettes, four cases of gloves, and 1000 human volunteers for a breast cancer study.”
As one who knows more than a few medical researchers, I find this very believable.
Good Morning Christy,
This is good news, this is the first I’ve heard of it, thanks
hugs and hot chocolate for ((barbara))
My mother has survived breast cancer by 31 years and counting. She is one tough nut.
O/T: Instead of senators and cheerleaders from the networks, why not send poets to war? Sometimes a few words are worth a thousand pictures.
Hullo, you lovely people. I’ve missed you very much. Have had no energy for kicking political butt, so depended on you for that, and also for keeping me/us semi-sane through these last weeks, politically and personally. And now, here you are, digging in to cancer research, which tugs at my heart and makes me even more grateful that I know this place.
Morning all. Barbara, lovely to see you.
Women’s health care needs to be more of a priority.
I was sad to see this trend occuring. Pharmacies with no birth control. The women of the US do not need more unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.
There is a war on for control of your bodies, ladies.

.
Lack of funding for breast cancer research should not come as a surprise when women are being denied birth control.
Vote everyone..the Republicans have got to lose this election.
Hi Cat, I’m about your age and I signed up too.
My paternal grandmother died at age 33 of this disease.
Hugs to Barbara.
Hugs (((Barbara))) been thinkin about you
Thinking outside the box is what progress is all about. I wish the study well.
It’s rainy and cool here today. Perfect day to hide away with a book and a pot of tea. Guess I know what I’ll be doing with my time this afternoon…
I kid you not. Fruit flies are used for breast cancer research, and autism. But anti-science creationists are unaware of this. Sarah Palin gave her very first policy speech. She wants increased federal funding for autism research. But taxpayer money should not be used for silly research. For example, lefty liberal scientists waste money on researching Fruit Flies.
It is true that neurexin research might be important.
But Drosophilas are also used in cancer research, and almost everything else.
Although I am not a biologist, I personally prefer using fruit flies. They are not as warm and fuzzy to experiment on, as are puppies and lab rats.
My sister is a five year survivor. Click here each day for the Breast Cancer Site and help to provide free mammograms.
Then click along the tabs at the top of the page and provide:
Food (Hunger Site)
Child Healthcare
Books (Literacy Site)
Preserve Rainforest Land
Food for Animals (Animal Rescue Site)
I click through all six sites first thing every morning and know that no matter what happens the rest of the day, I will have done something good for others.
I saw that somewhere yesterday. Ooopsie. Guess perhaps actually talking to some research scientists before trying to throw in a zinger might have been a good idea…
I promise not to be an all-David, all-the-time woman, but wanted you to know that three days before he died, we did our absentee ballots together. He really, really wanted to be counted. For the first time in his life, this house has sported a presidential lawn sign. And I’m pretty sure the big “O” on it doesn’t stand for “Oprah.”
couldn’t believe no one mentioned this loon requesting and accepting $3M in earmarks for study of seal dna
Obtaining facts before making policy formulations is not one of McShame et als strengths.
barbara, I’m so glad that you all got to spend so much time together before the end. My FIL is living with us now, after losing our MIL a couple of weeks ago, and he’s still coming to terms with everything slowly (after 53 years of marriage, you have to expect that, I’d think!), but they had a lot of time together and that really meant the world to him.
Hugs, hon.
bawlin’ like a baby now. how very moving and illustrative of (((David’s))) character
Trying to decide what to make for dinner this evening. It’s cold and dreary…definitely going to throw in a loaf of bread, but what to go with it? *G*
Oh, (((Christy)))! I missed news of the death of your MIL. I’m so very sorry! Please give (((your FIL))) an extra hug from Minnesota.
Actually, I support most scientific research. At least I support any research with the exceptions of deadly weapons or polluting the planet for corporate greed.
I do too. and with all the hideous viruses decimating marine mammals of course it’s important – just would have liked someone to call her on her serial hypocrisy
Beef Stew is always good.
A couple of pounds of stew beef browned in olive oil.
Chopped: a couple of potatos, celery, carrots, onion
Can of diced tomatoes
Small cans of corn, green beans, peas
Can of beer
1 Bay leaf
Season to your taste with garlic, black pepper, whatever.
Crock pot or stove top, your choice

I’m making ribs. A coworker used this recipe recently and couldn’t say enough about how good they came. I’d make some stew but that would require getting out of my pjs and going to the store.
Loving Italian food, whenever I make beef stew, I serve it on the extra-wide egg noodles. Kids, especially, like it better that way.
Barbara, Welcome back. You have been in our thoughts and prayers…wondering how you were getting along. Good to have you here. I hope you are getting good rest, taking care of yourself. My best, Bev
forgot you were a Minnesotan. are you in the Crazy Lady’s district ? recall our GrandmaJ resided there, would love to hear from her and how things are truly going as the local papers appear to be in the bag for Mrs. Loon

Lord have mercy, no I’m not. Well, wait. Which crazy lady? We have a few. Michele Bachmann is in the 6th District, I’m in the 2nd.
Am contemplating a big pot of minestrone or pasta fagiole. That sounds good with some fresh bread. The problem is that it would require a trip to the store for a few choice ingredients and, frankly, going out sounds crappy.
Maybe I’ll do a cruise through the pantry and the freezer and see what sort of “throw together” I can come up with for later. Hmmmm….
Good Morning Christy, Barbara and the rest of the pups. Barbara please take care of yourself and I’m so pleased that David got to vote. Your recipe sounds delicious, you have been missed.

Well who could have predicted that Iraq would not want to be occupied.
oooh Colleen Rowley territory. can’t find any current polling. saw a swingstate piece from June that showed Savri within reach (with little funding at the time)
I signed up! Thanks for putting it in the spotlight.

Well, isn’t THAT interesting. I bet Dick Cheney and his annotation pen are busy this morning…
Gee, I don’t why, but I’m suddenly very hungry!!
G’morning Christy!
My Mother is a survivor ,so your post hit close to home!!
Glad you’re on this thread, because you would really enjoy Susan Love. I met her in 94, shortly before her hormone book, and had some contact on her book tour.
We have a lot in common because medical “reserach” and “economics” research have a lot of flaws in common. The bible on HRT prior to Susan’s book was that “population” study that involved primarily nurses. Well, they never thought about the fact that a third cause, more diligent medical care, not HRT, explained the lower incidences of certain medical problems. Not until the NIH (think that’s who did it) did a much larger, well designed, population study, courtesy of a woman at the helm, which enabled us to sort out causes. All Susan’s science told her that making yourself hormonally a teenager for all of your senior life would be a bad thing, and in her book she pulled all of the fragmentary evidence together, before the NIH study proved the point.
I make a mean pasta fagiola. But, the other night, I made a delicious pasta and peas recipe. It’s not a special meal, rather a middle-of-the-week, what-the-hell-am-I-going-to-make-for-dinner kind of meal.
Saute sliced onion in some oil
Add a lge can of Whole Tomatoes, drained and squeezed
Add 1/2 can of water
Add a small can (or 2) of tomato sauce, depending on how thick you want it.
Throw in a small bag of frozen peas.
Season.
Toss with a lb of pasta (we prefer the small shells) and lots of Romano cheese.
btw, as an aside — I voted early yesterday. Just a friendly reminder that voting early is a really good idea this year, since a lot of places are expecting long lines.
Voting was crowded and busy where I live on a Friday afternoon — unusual, frankly, for us. Not overly crowded, but certainly a steady stream of folks voting. Was nice to see.
She was also vilified by a large portion of the research community for calling out their flaws on those studies — but she did so because she suspected there was a huge risk to what they were doing without having real science backing it up. And she was absolutely right.
You gotta love a woman who doesn’t back down in the face of a lot of personal BS because it’s the right thing to do…
GA opens up additional voting sites starting Monday so that should alleviate some of the lines. My son lives in Gwinett county and the early voting site was a hour away. The first two weeks of the early voting cycle required that you fill out an absentee ballot, next week you just fill out your registration information. The turn outs are large.
I kid you not.
SamJoe the Plumber may have some domestic violence issues. I have not had the time to verify this, because I only on page 2 of Reddit. It might be a different Joe perhaps.Well, part of the vilification was spurred by manufacturers of hormomes, dontcha think? Probably did a lot of rabble rousing behind the scenes.
Susan & I had a couple of really great discussions because of the similarities between Grade B (or lower) medical & economic research, i.e., mining the data to prove a preconceived notion.
Did you also know that Susan & her partner, Helen Cooksey, won in the SCOTUS for the right of a partner to legally adopt their child. Susan bore their daughter, but a male relative of Helen contributed the sperm.
I’d sure love those large turn-outs to smack Saxby Chambliss right out the door…
i know – but that’s, as i wrote, the difficulty in funding – not because people can’t be found.
Honestly, do we really need to go there?
ohmygosh, where are you? You know my state. Sarvi is in statistical reach of John Kline, who has generally stayed out of election trouble by being completely inaccessible to his consituents. I’m supposed to go to a Sarvi gathering tomorrow. We’ll see. Meanwhile, Franken appears to have taken the lead over Norm Colemeleon. One can only hope! There are some weird pockets of right-wingery here in Humphrey/Wellstone land. Former Congressman (and Republican) Dave Durenberger all but endorsed Obama as he lit in to St. Paul Pioneer Press for it’s bizarre decision to not endorse. A bona fide maverick, Arne Carlson (former governor of MN) endorsed Obama. Things seem to be a bit wobbly for the Repugs.
It was — that and the people who were receiving their funding. Absolutely.
So who did you vote for? ;)
Morning, everyone; it’s chilly and rainy in Upstate New York this morning.
Oh, and I had no idea on the SCOTUS decision. Good on them! We have some dear friends who have done that and who have intricately drafted legal documents to ensure that if there is a problem and the child is in the hospital, some narrow-minded asshat can’t keep them away from their kids. I’m telling you right now, if someone tried to keep me away from The Peanut, it would get ugly so fast. I cannot understand why people cannot see that it would be the same for any parent regardless of gender or sexual preference.
But then, again, I tend to think of homosexuals as people, too. *g*
In order to win without a runoff, a candidate in GA must have 50%. It appears unlikely that either candidate will achieve that margin. Can you imagine the money that the RNC and DNC would pump into the race. Martin would have a chance as long as Obama’s get out the vote folks stay in place.
And I gather that medical research at universities, especially pharma supported, has deteriorated significantly because they hide who’s paying and dont’ publish anything that shows that the drugs don’t work.
no, thank you. (SouthernDragon)
May I speak for my people and say thank you.
Yep, he has become a folk hero and now is talking about running for Congress. Fair game, I think.
I should of added that there is a third party candidate running with Saxby and Martin.
It seems silly to think that’s even a question, but there you are. SIGH
no appropriate controls? mistaking correlation for causation? surely scientists and economists never would do that? /s
i shouldn’t laugh because lots of people have gotten mislead and worse – but still, where’s the decent peer review when we need it?
Would a good graphic artist put together a morphing sequence of Lee Atwater, Karl the Krook Rove, and Ms. Todd?
Yes, not evolution, but devolution.
It’s a libertarian running in the third-party slot, isn’t it? The thought has been that could syphon off some votes from Chambliss, as I understand it, because of his immigration policy stance way back. You get that feeling at all?
first off . . .I blame that Hamsher woman
we live in Central Texas. And there are soooo many good races, keepin’ track of a lot of them. knowing the networks will pretty much focus on Presidential and some Senate results, don’t know what I’m gonna do on Election Night. In my perfect world, I’d be sitting front row in one of those giant Vegas Sportsbook places surrounded by 8 foot high tote boards . . . like some ol junkie at the racetrack :D
I live in such a boring state-NY. No challenge. I did get an email about going to PA. Oh, how I’d love to. But work demands forbid it.
Yum, I love pasta and peas. I use some diced ham, or proscuitto if I have when I make mine/

looks like they are gonna try to get a “mistress” rumor going about obama
I don’t want them tracking back here so to get the beginning of the smear google “the wolf on obama’s mistress”
Solai – that’s because no one went up in the primaries against Arcuri. Actually the race against Randy Kuhl (Eric Massa, D) is pretty exciting out west.
If medical research is anything like ecomonics research, “peers” can be found.
In economics they’ve done studies that distribute papers to reviewers with no names attached. Guess what? A lot fewer papers by “famous” economists get selected for publication, and a lot more written by women get selected. Yet they still do not do anonymous reviews.
Spit.
barbara, please talk about david as much as you want. it’s always touching and frequently inspiring. and even if it wasn’t, it’s wrong to lock up your memories of him if there are things you want to say. my two cents anyway.
Please No.
i think the appropriate response here is: ding, ding, ding!
4000 very stupid people turn out to the local Cow Palace to see McBush. Sample quote “Obama’s really ridiculous. He’s like a socialist.”

Obama is speaking at Civic Center Park tomorrow morning. I’m thinking he can pull 40,000.
I think half of California has left for either New Mexico, Col or Nevada to work on GOTV. It’s kind of lonely here.

I think I’ve barely seen a MSM report about the relative size of M vs. O crowds, and the video coverage is tighly framed to make sure no comparisons are made. Of course, there is the occasional story about what great crowds Palin draws.
They’ve been trying to get that going for months, and have been spinning their wheels on it because there’s nothing there but hot air and speculation at the level of crapola from what I’ve seen. Sad, really…
The Utica OD has been doing a hit job on Arcuri. I know his family, I know him. Been a guest in his home, he in mine. Fine, middle class family but no real wealth. He’s made some very interesting investments. Have you seen this too?
I hate to seem disouraging, but one of the things that is going to have to be done under a Democratic administration is to reboot the buimedical research activity in this country — something thing comparable to the response to Sputnik or the “cancer initiative” under, who was it?, LBJ?
I have been saying for over ten years that NIH-funded research in this country is a dead man walking. Right now, it is a zombie, and he zombie is beginning to stumble. Imagine that a study group in Bethosda has only 50 grants to review and that they know ahead of time that only ONE of those grants will be funded!!!
That is the current situation.
No nation can start and stop research every few years and expect to have a population of active, well-trained, happy scientists. (Yes; even scientists work better when they’re happy.)
You cannot expect to have drug companies do real research, because research takes time and long-term committment bordering on the fanatical — drug companies don’t act that way.
This would be worth examining is detail in some posts, if we have some local talent who can do it. I’m “out of the loop”, except marginally.
In the WaPo archives was an article about breast cancer and DDT. I check a number of newspapers and was surprised the story didn’t get play. The preview is below.
Long-Hidden Dangers?; Early Exposure to DDT May Raise Risk of Breast Cancer
Author: Rick Weiss – Washington Post Staff Writer
Date: Oct 9, 2007
Rachel Carson’s seminal 1962 book, “Silent Spring,” marked the beginning of the end of DDT’s glory. It documented the persistence of DDT and its chemical byproducts in the environment and its devastating effects on some bird species.
For one, most of those studies did not measure actual DDT levels in people’s blood, assaying instead a metabolic byproduct of DDT called DDE, which stays in the body much longer than DDT. It was considered a simple marker for the amount of DDT to which a person had been exposed.
Among women who were exposed to DDT in their first 13 years, those who scored in the top one-third for DDT levels had more than five times the likelihood of getting breast cancer compared with those whose DDT levels were in the lowest third.
Nope – we don’t get any Utica coverage down where we are…
Even a few points would send it into a runoff. Saxby’s connection to Imperial Sugar in Savannah are also being questioned. There’s a new lawsuit implicating him to Imperial Sugar execs and his loosening safety rules. I asked Marion whether or not she thought that might have some traction, where she lives and she didn’t think so. IMO the DNC’s ads aren’t helping. They are running ads against the fair tax and most folks down here think that they pay 50% of their salary in taxes.
thanx for that, I needed the reassurance
I have had a sneaking feeling they’ve been holding something back to unload with a week or two to go so my fingers are crossed they’ve run out of stuff
What, fund fundamental research that is not done by your cronies??!! Surely you jest.
Sorry to be so sarcastic, but it’s completely in line with what W has done in every other part of the govt.
Late start this morning. Coffee’s been consumed. Now on to other chores.
you guys are gonna get a HOOT from the Bachman “apology”
I have it posted on my diary

I saw that Chambliss got subpoenaed in that case recently. That could get interesting…
that is so cool – thanks for that background.
Hit head! Preview is my friend. Repeat: Preview is my friend, would have found “checked” vice “check”. I sure hope the little bit of watching political ads isn’t destroying brain cells, although if that is the case, I’ll blame it on Dino Rossi ads.
So not a mental image that I needed with regard to McCain and the folks running his campaign. Where’s that brain bleach? Bleeeeech…
Hugs to {{{barbara}}} and thank you for sharing David with us through your comments these last weeks. We, feel his loss, too. We voted absentee here, too…logistics of disability voting.
Love that Arne Carlson when he votes will be voting for Obama!
And Michelle Bachmann can go suck eggs. This woman is unfit for Congress. And absolutely unfit for foster-parenting. Talk about a two-faced bigoted liar.
May I freshen up your Caribou this mornin’?

Arcuri and his cousin bought two bldgs that lease space to NYS. One is a police barracks, the other used for the DMV. Like I said, it was a hit job, so I would need more info before I would be able to understand if it was ‘fishy’. The article said they bought one bldg for about 150,000 and the lease will bring in about $700,000. But it didn’t mention what they lease includes (heat etc.) so I don’t know what the profit margin is. Both were purchased while he was DA. I don’t like the sound of it. I HATE when reps use their position for personal wealth. I’m reserving judgement for the moment, but if he gets challenged in a primary…well I may support that opponent.
Yes, it does have a smell on it, doesn’t it? I’m ticked off with Arcuri, big time, over his FISA vote – he sent me the smarmiest email back basically saying “I know you don’t agree with me but …tough.”
When I lived in Rome, it seemed to me that the Utica OD was in definite running as one of the worst newspapers in the country.
Sounds like it hasn’t improved at all.
I hope her opponent sees your post and creates a rebuttal add based on it
Yea I have RSVP’ d
I’m catching up, someone may have mentioned this. There was a report earlier this month in the Strib, I think, that the research saying adult stem cells could be used instead of embryonic stem cells was discredited. It was research done at U of M, IIRC.
I lost track of this amid the frazzle of real life. Anybody pick up on this?
Makes a diff whether a candidate says they support “stem cell research” or “embryonic stem cell research.”
PW is upstairs with a new thread.
See you there. I’ll be the guy wearing an Obama T-shirt.
