We are reminded once again that the Republican Party really is the Party of Personal Irresponsibility:
The hoaxster who scratched a "B" into her own cheek and claimed that a fictional black Obama-supporting thug did it now blames the media for blowing her politically-motivated hate crime into a political firestorm: "She just opened up and said she wanted to tell the truth," Bryant said, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "She was upset with the media for blowing this into a political firestorm."
When she’s not blaming the media for the results of her own actions (or for their following the lead of Team McCain folks, such as McCain’s Pennsylvania communications director Peter Feldman, who according to local reporters pushed the most inflammatory parts of the story even as it was falling apart), she’s claiming that she was so out of her head she has no idea how she could have done them:
"She is stating that she was in her vehicle driving around, and she came up with this idea," she said. "She said she has prior mental problems and doesn’t know how the backward letter ‘B’ got on her face."
However, Todd was the only one in the vehicle, and "when she saw the ‘B’ she thought she must have been the one who did it," Bryant said.
Funny how she was so off her head at the time she doesn’t remember any of it, yet was still possessed of enough of her mental faculties to be Twittering quite coherently and volubly at that time — while behind the wheel of a car, no less. Funny how she’s a member of an organization, the College Republicans, that has a history of "rat f—ing" that, as Franklin Foer noted in a 2005 TNR piece, persists to this day and whose most notable alumni are Karl Rove, Donald Segretti and Jack Abramoff.
It’s not just College Republicans whose memory suddenly fails them whenever they’re called upon to pay the price for their actions. Remember Alberto Gonzales’ testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee last year?

As Julia reminded us yesterday, false accusations can lead to real jail time and real problems for the innocent people fingered by them. It’s a good thing that Todd’s story fell apart before the cops started bringing in suspects for her to accuse, or we could have been looking at a modern-day replay of the Scottboro Boys situation.

Robinson was born just five years after the last of the Scottsboro Boys was freed from prison. In his lifetime, he’s also got to see a near-replay of Scottsboro when Charles Stuart falsely accused black men of killing his wife (and where a black man was jailed for a time because of it). There’s also Susan Smith, who falsely accused a black man of hijacking her car and killing her kids.

Because of the security at Mile High, it never crossed my mind. Some of my friends stood in line for over 3 hours to get through screening. I’m a lot more apprehensive about tomorrow’s speech at Civic Center. I’m not sure how they are going to secure that perimeter. Last night, I finally heard a commentor note that Biden’s punch line on his “they’ll challenge him” story was “they’ll find that he has a spine of steel.” I only heard that part of the recording once, the first time I heard of the incident, and never heard it meantioned again until list night. Whether or not he should have raised the issue, the “spine of steel” line is what made sense of the story.
The whole damn campaign is rapidly spinning totally out of control, top-down, ground up. Sarah Palin ‘going rogue’? Well, sister, if you want to be labeled the “Ralph Nader” of the GOP for this election cycle..go for it.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to freak anyone out. To clarify, Civic Center is located in central Denver, between the State Capitol and the City & County building. The perimeter is delineated by major streets. I’m guessing they will put temporary barriers around the perimeter, and have cops stationed every few yards to ensure nobody hops the fence. There will be only one entrance.

Right now, she’s trying to escape accountability by shifting it either to the media or to an alleged shaky mental state — and the national media is poised to buy her excuse. Regardless of whether they do, I at least want to make sure that the evidence undermining her excuses gets presented — because we won’t see it on CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC, or FOX, which is where most Americans get their news.

It maddens me to read that Ms. Todd changed course with investigators saying she wanted to tell the truth that the attack didn’t happen, but in so doing, used that confession to set up another defensive lie by stating she snapped into consciousness or sudden awareness in her car with the B scratched on her face and a fake black eye -with no recollection of how it got there. That is pathologic. Shameless, bold, pathologic lying, that is. No different than Karl Rove.
Yep. Great speech, huh? Now that I’ve watched it again, she didn’t actually turn to Bush when she said it (for some reason I remember it that way! I swear she turned to him and said, “Mr. President I want to see some peace”). Amazing speech anyways. I tear up listening to it.

Exactly. It’s a variation of the Sergeant Schultz Defense, wherein obviously-smart people pretend to be dumber than toast to evade accountability. That’s why I brought up Alberto Gonzales.

Hard to tell sometimes when a person is acting. Sarah doesn’t come across as overly intelligent..so, is she acting..or not? Is it her little girl routine to suck up to men, or is she that bad?
If Mr. I Don’t Remember was smart..he would not have got himself into the position that he did. Perhaps he was playing dumb..I am sure that the Hague is on the mind of more than one in the White House these days.
This is why I’ve been telling people everywhere who seem to think that she’s a poor little girl who’s oh-so messed up and deserves our (sympathy/pity/support) that it’s far too convenient a frame that’s been set up. This was a cold, calculating attempt to smear Obama and the black community, and any collateral damage be damned (Just think what might have happened if she’d gotten away with it for even 24 hours). The Sergeant Schultz defense just makes it smell even more like a Rovian special, inept as it was. She tried to maximize the effect while doing only superficial physical damage to herself. She’s where she should be, she’ll get a psych evaluation, and I bet she won’t be half so “troubled” as some are too willing to believe. She’s a zealot, but I don’t know how that makes her too mentally unstable to take her punishment. Plenty of church members I met would fit under that definition of instability.
