Seems Russia has said it would be ok with the US leaving troops in Iraq under a UN mandate. The NYTimes struggles to comprehend:
There had been speculation that Russia might veto an extension of the United Nations Security Council resolution authorizing the foreign military presence in Iraq, in part because of frustration with American foreign policy in other parts of the world, notably support for the independence of Kosovo and the defense of Georgian claims to two breakaway enclaves.
While the significance of Russia’s announcement is difficult to determine, it does remove one potential barrier to extending the resolution, which expires on Dec. 31.
Ok. When the Georgian war occurred the US could do nothing to stop Georgia or aid its Russian ally. Why? Because its troops are all tied down in wars, the most notable of which is Iraq.
Why is Russia ok with the US being tied down in Iraq? Right then.
Yes, this has been another issue of "your useless media".

Ian!
No more economics ? I was just starting to get it? But I’m woried. Obama should be ahead by 60 points.
I’m quite satisfied with between 11% and 14%. And I think that’s low. A matter of days now and it’s exciting.
Did Putin have to rear his head for Russia to say this?
Issa accepting the no one could predict line, let’s all look to the future (i.e. no one was to blame).
i think the first commandment at the NYT must be: “Thou shall not connect the dots.”
Greenspan expansions are not like contractions. Deep, the guy is deep.
greenspan, cox and snow testifying before waxman’s committee on cspan now.
it’s “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil”
you forgot profound and insightful.
Greenspan really pressing the “No one could have predicted” line. This iteration is that the models didn’t predict what happened. So who (beyond anyone with a 4th grade level ability in math) could have known?
Re modeling: GIGO
Yeah. I don’t wanna stray o/t too much. But it is exciting. And I;’d much rather be in our shoes than their’s–even if ours have holes in the soles and their’s are fancy scmancy designer shoes.
I’m not hearing anything anymore –and I blame Obama not the media–abouty one of the dumbest things mcCain has ever said. The 100 years war remark. I know,I know. He tries to explain the “context.” But that explanation is bullshit and it doesn’t change that a 100 year occupation will have troops tied down. Could it be that Obama doesn’t bring it up because he doesn’t really disagree?
When you said ‘profound and insightful” i thought you were talkin about palin.
Why don’t they get some fucking experts?
Just proving that the US cannot do shit without the approval of Russia. Makes sense to me as America is now a second rate power.
Why have experts when you can have Very Serious People?
I think that Cox was just arguing that the 2004 waiving of the Reserve Rule for investment banks actually didn’t do anything which makes me wonder why he thinks the investment banks were pressing for it.
greenspan: the source of the mortgage crisis is falling home prices. when prices stabilize all will be well.
The press doesn’t get it because its all a soap opera to them. Yes its all people magazine and a big horse race. Strategery is just beyond their pretty little minds.
earlier greenspan was talking about how people aren’t going to get the medicare they expect. i had to take a break and pace for a bit at that. he acts like it’s a hypothetical thought experiment instead of something that could cause death and suffering.
Greenspan: Foreclosure doesn’t help anyone. (no specifics on how to help homeowners) Stabilization of home prices will help this. (Loon, how does he think prices will stabilize if foreclosures continue?) Then he says that foreclosures will decrease in some not too distant future so this will stabilize home prices and so decrease foreclosures. (Anyone besides me see a certain circularity in his reasoning?)
Once in a while the media gets it right:
Greenspan’s ’shocked disbelief’ at crisis
LA Times is on it. Greenspan in denial…accountability for this republicab nightmare? Millions will starve and millions will lose jobs millions will lose retirement, Stocks taking another bath -97.97 -1.15% 8,421.24
Sorry Ian OT. The Miriam Fractal Spiral has the momentum. The “Bailout” is a gigantic trillion dollar corporate welfare waste of our kids money…ours is long spent by the Idiots War.
I am still trying to figure out how the damn egg came first. Greenspan is as wrong headed now as he was back when clinton was worshipping him and bush was giving him a BJ. He also said that reworking the present over priced mortgages would mean higher interest rates in the future. Higher than what, the rip off rates that are still being charged?
And if I hear the term “metrics” one more time I will scream (and frighten the cats)
New AP Poll has Obama & McCain about even.
MSM is hysterical over having lost control of the message.
Cox: Except for the collapse, all of our models worked correctly although they may have been using the wrong metrics.
Greenspan: Companies that are too large to fail raise large questions
i think greenspan may be referring to something he said recently, at least it seems similar to me. things will improve when things improve:
lol, my cats barely give me a look anymore, they’ve gotten so used to my exclamations of frustration and disgust.
greenspan: we did not know the size of the subprime market until late 2005.
sarbanes making a good point about the people who are hurt are not those at fault.
I’m not going to spend another minute worrying about what Russia has to say today.
And,
I believe these oversight committees are important, I just can’t hang on every word that the panelists are saying. Aren’t they the ones who were in charge and watched it all happening? Someone who’s only defense is, um, it happened. It is what it is may not be the person who will give us a clue of what to do now or in the future.
Greenspan is in implausable deniability.
Who will be punished for running investment markets like casinos. Leveraging risk is like walking a high wire in a hurricane…gauranteed to fail.
Criminal behavior is rewarded. This will bever be an orderly market with out strong oversight to restore investor confidence.
Funny how the regulators are always the last to know!
PS, before anyone yells at me, for the purpose of clarification, I thank those of you who are On Watch today. I’m not saying your shouldn’t, I’m saying that today I just can’t do it.
I’m listening to classical music and cleaning and gardening. And, checking in on everyone’s perceptions of what’s going on outside of my little world.
Thank you all.
tomorrow i’ll take my turn in the garden. enjoy the day.
mccollum: a free market is not the same thing as an unregulated market.
:) Throw a sock at your tv for me.
What Greenspan is really saying here is that they didn’t know until late 2005 and he left the Fed January 31, 2006. So really he wasn’t around at the time.
Russians are in Syria and probably Iran. Russia does not want US presense in their sphere of influece in which we have been poaching. Central Asia, the Caususes, the Black Sea, The Caspian and Northern Middle East. Russia is not OK with our missile system in these areas. Forcing global oligarchy with US MIC might is unsustainable foriegn policy. It will destroy us. That is the Neocon system and the free market is the market killer.
Afternoon, Ian.
Zounds! Them Rooskies ain’t so dumb.
So?
Who IS dumb? (Rhetorical Question)
Wunner what the Iraki people think? (Dumb Question)
Don’t matter! (we’ll tell ‘em what to think, and they damn-well better like it …)
WE is ‘Murkah and we IS exceptional. We is also right about everythang.
But, them Rooskies is up to sumthin, mark my words.
Geez, what could they be up to?
Well, they’d best not become too cocky or we’ll have to clean their clocks for ‘em, and we’re just the country to do it.
Ain’t we?
The cat’s meow?
Exceptional?
Gawd’s Chosen People ?(Don’t pay no nevermind to them lesser claimants, we got the bombs, AND the BIG GUY IN THE SKY, talks to our BIG GUY every day.
Hey! I’m not making that up, George, our George, says he talks with Gawd all the time. That’s one reason this Christian nation ‘elected’ George in the ‘first place’ not once, but twice: and don’t pay no nevermind to those who say the ‘lections were stolen, that kinda stuff happens in poor, third-world banana ‘republics’ who spend too much on their military)
Always proven right, in the end?
The World’s Policeman?
The only hope for humanity and the true home of the merit-based ‘Aristocracy’? (that is our, ahem, ‘betters’, usually self-referenced as “the best and brightest”. I know, in a republic with democratic … um, tendancies, such thoughts are best left unvoiced, that the rabble not get the wrong idea … but we do ourselves and the future a grave injustice when we do not adequately appreciate how central a role these ‘betters’ have in determining the quality of our lives and aspirations. Let credit fall where it is due. Deary me! I have failed to include the Political Class amongst those who also deserve the appropriate appellation “our betters”. Hopefully they, with all their wisdom and insight, will forgive this almost unforgivable omission on my part? And, because I just know they are gonna forgive me, I offer the final proof that out nation is beyond compare; in another society, such an ‘error’ could well result in consequence, dire and grim, but in this great nation we’ve nothing to fear from them what lead us.)
Note: This comment is, in no way, a reflection of our times or our ‘plight’ but is owing, rather, to a comment selise made regarding our ‘betters’ some two threads back … and Ron D’s comment, on the same thread, regarding the “inherent conflict berween a republic and a democracy” as well as selise’s reply to that comment, “dollars vote, not people” … any snark herein detected is all in yer imagination.
;~D
So who is minding the store?
Answer. No one. They have raided our National Treasury. Russian and al queda are laughing at us while General Betrayus tells Der Spiegal things are just ducky in Iraq but we need to stay to keep it that way. That is McInsane. The Russians remember our Stinger missile that defeated them in Afghanistan only to well…USA are not their friend.
Zi foreign central bankers are most pleased with the performance of their Federal Reserve Banking system.
Rarely have zi foreign bankers enjoyed such spectacular years of booms, busts, bubbles, debts, wars, and profits
Greenspan and Bernanke may have failed America, but London is pleased.
did i just hear greenspan say that most derivatives were no longer being used?
oops. guess i should go to the new thread.
p.s. nice to see you dw.
;~D
God is punishing us…when will they start on that. Bush disobeyed and misunderstood what God wanted. Cowboy prayer… fuck with the bull you git the horns. The horns in this case right up the neocon butt. Lost…gone 40%
yup 40% of the capital in the global economy. Anyone home?
