After a quarter century of the GOP dry humping Grover Norquist’s leg, and 8 years of George Bush proposing tax cuts as a remedy for everything, it’s almost quaint that Rover goes there:
Obama’s tax-and-spend prescription will cause the economic fever to spike, not recede.
…
There’s more. Wanting to raise taxes — anyone’s taxes — in a slowdown is a warning sign of a misguided economic philosophy. Mr. Obama’s proposal to redistribute wealth is a warning of indifference or hostility to enterprise.
Er, the progressive tax isn’t something Obama’s proposing — it’s something we’ve had for, oh, about 100 years.
Nobody’s buying, Turd Blossom:
The Wall Street Journal/NBC poll also shows Obama leading McCain when it comes to which candidate would be "better on taxes." In this week’s poll, Obama leads McCain on taxes 48% to 34%. In mid-September, McCain was favored 41% to 37%.
Oh well.
PS
About that raising anyone’s taxes wrecks the economy theory, Rover? It’s bullshit.

Freaking love that line
Man, this is a major variation from the scifi outfit we saw in McSFB’s earlier appearances.
Is it possible to dry hump in a bathtub?
On a separate topic, Sydney Schanberg was on Democracy Now! today. This is a long article but should be read in its entirety.
John McCain is a dishonourable man. Period.
McCain’s got a campaign of Constant Sorrow.
Just FWIW, looking at the chart (after blowing it up to a more-readable size), it seems we are still above the long-term trend line that runs upward from the bottom of the 91-94 recession and the beginning of the tech boom.
We’ve been moving sideways, more or less, with a good bit of volatility thrown in, since Bushie came in. Sort of a head-and-shoulders top over the last 8 years, but there it is.
Interesting poll i saw someplace today. the percentage of people who think Mccain will be another Bush is less than 50 and fell a point since the last poll. But at the same time obama is increasing his lead. Surprising. saying “I’m not George Bush” worked for McCain. They don’t think he’s George Bush. They think he’s a scumbag in his own right.
agree with the point, but disagree with the chart that goes with this. the dow is not the economy.
The Rethugs would certainly disagree with you. For them it is THE economy, nothing else matters except the stock market.
reason #9999 why i’m not an R
Thanks BT.

My feet hurt.
Sorry to go all ‘OT’ so early in your thread BT, but I just have to scream something and I’m at work. So, I pray you will indulge me just this once…
FUCK NEWT GINGRICH!
LOL. on point analysis.
OT: today’s comic relief…ron howard revisits “opie” in honor of barack obama (featuring andy griffith & henry winkler):
Ron Howard’s Call to Action
Thanks, but no thanks! :]
newtie is on my Change Channel Quick!! List.
*shaking head*
you are absolutely right, he is a dishonourable man.
Thanks for the link SD. This is one issue that I cannot believe isn’t getting covered more on the teevee. What is disheartening is not only McCain’s betrayal, but that there are others still pulling levers behind the scenes to bury those secrets as well. So very unfair.
here’s what it said. actually it was 49% but is back up over 50.
McCain-Bush – After ticking below 50 for the first time two days ago, the percentage of voters who see McCain as a continuation of Bush is back to 51. Voters again split 51-46 on the question of whether McCain would mainly continue in Bush’s direction or chart a new course.
I agree
Cool.
Ummm, tax and spend vs. spend/spend/spend/charge it/spend/spend/shuffle funds/spend/spend/spend/lie about it/spend/spend/spend (repeat ad infinitum)??? Ah! Fiscal conservatism at work.
and link (so I’m not relying on my memory which is too crammed with all these poll numbers and stuff.)

Be sure to watch the segment on DN. Schanberg talks about an incident with the wife of one of the unaccounted for POW’s at a hearing about this in the 90’s.
Asked Wednesday who had paid for the suit he was wearing, Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden told WSLS-TV in Roanoke, Va.: “I pay for my suits. I pay for all of my own clothing.”
Joe Sixpack. Wait. he doesn’t drink. Joe……. well, just plain Joe!!!!
Very cute! Thanks for sharing. *G*
Never see either one of those shows…
Are they on Nick at Night?
for rosalind @ 15
hmm andrea mitchell wasn’t on today..nora on in her place. hmmmm could it be due to hubby getting grilled up on capitol hill?
see = seen
She’s waiting to give him some strokes to ease his bruised ego.
Oh SD, our little fundraiser this past saturday was a success. We pulled in over 200,000 dollars!!!
in pledges.
correction 100,000 not 200,000 (I wish)
Are you speaking of Alfond, or of someone else he shoved in the hallway? I’ve seen the hearing with McCain bullying Alfond and posted the video several times. He’s awful, awful.
which shows? i’ve been watching Nick for about 13 years now.
I was gonna say, man, that’s a hell of a lot of money for a 1 day fundraiser in this climate.
How old is she supposed to be??? She looks 67 on that pic.
Rosalind@15:
Loose… Hehehehe!
Probably, and probably on youtube as well. The Andy Griffith show and Happy Days.
Ron Howard’s characters are the epitome of small town America. He was also the little brother Winthrop in The Music Man movie. He was a very cute little boy, and now he’s a great director.
I’d have to go back to the segment. She was asking why the committee didn’t declassify the documents and he got angry and accused her of questioning his patriotism and eventually stormed out of the hearing room.
Hey, jayt, I know what you mean. I spent close to 5 hours standing up before, during and after Michelle’s rally here yesterday. I listened to part of Barack’s speech today and at one point it sounded like someone in the audience passed out or something. Do you know if they are okay?
One of the commenters on that post said something like “major Botox fail.” Quite the difference in what we see on teebee.
about 3/4 was corporate or business donations.
see #39
I think the implication is that he’s talking to the most “whitebread” people of America, if ya know what I mean. One of my girls is called whitebread at her school as a term of endearment.
That’s cool. Don’t let up. Keep at it and keep after those who pledged to pay up.
that’s Alfond, the sister of one of the downed airmen. She rocks. She really stood up to the bastard.
who is Democracy Corps? Sghould I trust their polls? They have Obama trailing by only 2 in GA. That’s kinda hard to fathom.
Back to the salt mine.
He’s such a putz, a WATB and a wanker. He’s just soooooo turned on by Caribou Barbi that he’s coming to her defense by slamming SNL for their parodies. He’s trying to pre-empt the “What Does the Vice President do, Governor Palin” skit that is in the works. He’s one of those guys that fantasizes about Sister Sarah and him doin’ the deed. Puuuuuuuuke!
hmm wanker on my tv talking about the boogey man dems committing voter fraud
If Martin is tied with Saxby it’s not that hard.
Now we need to knock the son of a bitch on his ass and make sure he doesn’t get up (figuratively speaking, mods). heh. Vote early, vote often.
Me too, see ya later.
bbl pups! peace.
I’m doing that now LOL. so far so good *g* i knew people had big hearts
Did you see Lawrence O’Donnell say yesterday that he’s not sure it’s legal for the RNC to pay for clothing. He said he doesn’t think it’s ever been done before! Never been on an expense account report for clothing before in any campaign. Not for a candidate and certainly not for her family!
how was the weather up there, Jim? i could see from your pictures itw as clear but how hot? that was a mid-day rally?
I remember watching those shows before Nickelodeon even existed as a cable channel. ^_^ Stuff on rerun in the 80s, but yeah. Ron Howard’s gotten very good as a director even when he was the epitome of little brother in his acting roles. He does some great messaging this way and knows exactly how to do it.
Oh. i thought ya meant like Spopongebob or Hey Arnold or somethin’.
And don’t forget that under the Republican President Eisenhower, the highest bracket was taxed at 91%. It’s now 36% — 39% under Obama’s plan and they’re calling him a socialist? Drama queens.
If I hear one more person say, “No one could have predicted …” …
makes sense. but it’s just shocking.
to me, anyway.
I listened to part of Barack’s speech today and at one point it sounded like someone in the audience passed out or something. Do you know if they are okay?
I dunno about that person, but there were plenty of medical personnel on hand. Someone fainted when he was here May 5th, too.
Good speech, big crowd, but I was feeling something less than full-on energetic after standing stock-still in the same spot for three hours before Barack hit the stage.
I was about 12 row back from Obama, right behind the teleprompter on his left. Couldn’t quite get far enough forward to shake his hand, though.
LOL
It just illicits an eyeroll from me
Please say no, OK? here goes. Did he tell the story about the pie guy?
It was in the low 80’s. The gates opened a little before 1 pm and the speakers started at 2:30. Michelle came on at 3:30 and spoke about a half hour. I was lucky enough to be in partial shade most of the time. There were volunteers passing out free bottled water. Everyone was cooperating and passing it along to those who needed it most.
Did the Congresscritters nod aimlessly or did they grill Greenspan with obvious data … did anyone watch the hearing ?
Free Bottled Water ?
F*cking Socialists ! /s
He was fillet quite a bit
Yea, they should have turned firehoses on them.
Wow. Except for admission, nothing was free here. Little hand towels with Barack’s picture on them? $5. Watery lemonade with no lemon? Didn’t even ask. Vendors were making a killing.
… that’ll learn ‘em …
It was even….cold.
PS See selise’s diary for coverage of the hearing.
Democracy Corps is James Carville. Don’t have any idea if they are accurate or not. I get their e-mails.
that would have been refreshing given the heat and that they are bolsheviks /s
“andy griffith show” is shown on tv land. dunno about “happy days”.
pends on the trajectory and water pressure
Thanks Jim !
((( selise ))) … many thanks !
you’re most welcome. i posted links to the cspan archives at the end of the oxdown thread.
also some live blogging in a couple of earlier threads (here and here)
Uh, Karl.
Those of us in the real world remember clearly that the present administration used “tax cuts” as its mantra, as you have suggested. We can also clearly see how that turned out.
Please report to the nearest correctional facility and lock yourself up, for your own safety.
Beware of women with hand cuffs.

Here’s today’s ‘Chuck Todd is an a-hole’ comment.
He was just on MSNBC saying to Anita Dunn of Obama’s campaign “Obama’s raised over 3/4 of a billion dollars during this election cycle; when is ‘enough’ enough?
I seemed to miss hearing those comments when the Rethugs had all the cash; in fact I seem to remember smug comments about their ’superior oganization & fundraising skills.’
Now, not so much.
Screw you Chuck.
Marcie has a new post up at Emptywheel site: “Another Defeat for Voter Supression”
I don’t think I’d be too hard on him, STTP. Yesterday he was the one saying that there seemed to be NO chemistry between McSame and Palin. He said it was as if you put two strangers side by side and had them answering questions. They seemed unattached to one another. And he said they seemed to know they are losing. Something about their demeanor.
Tangentially allied to the delightful headline, just who will they blame for their disgusting festering bom* bom* bom* of a campaign.
It’s become clear to LOTS more Ohioans, thanks to the McSalin Campain’s visitation onto the hallowed ground of Green High School’s bleachers yestidie, followed by airing of Brian Williams’ interview of the starlit couple. (to be found on utoob, no doubt, as well as HuffPo)
The gurus of this campaign have no one to blame but themselves.
They set out to hire a snake-oil salesperson, and they got their wish.
Sarah has the mental heft of a milkweed seed, and a small fraction of the usefulness. McSame needn’t glare at her and everyone else to track the source of his troubles. All ne needs is a mirror. Nice job, boyz! heh.
I’ll acknowledge that he’s usually better than most, but every once in a while he’ll pull something like the above comment out of his hindquarters.
To say Obama is raising too much money is just ridiculous.
As for McGramps and Palin’s chemistry, let’s just say Cindy should keep her divorce lawyer on speed dial and remember how she got in the big chair in the first place.
The genie is out of the bottle now, and Palin’s gonna be the new face of the GOP; she ain’t going back down on the farm.
And McGramps will be only too happy to serve as her Washington tour guide.

What capital vacuum?
It seems to me that if this current financial crisis does nothing else, it should drive a stake into the heart of any notion that there is any sort of shortage of investment capital that would be created by taxing the wealthy more, or that we would have even more growth if only we taxed the wealthy less. Look, even buying stocks on a secondary market like the NYSE doesn’t capitalize anything, and if you consider nth order derivative “investments” even further from even the shadow of capitalizing anything, that managed to suck in $70 trillion for CDSs alone, the federal tax burden, in comparison is a laughably trivial diversion of the resources of the wealthy from productive investment.
The tax code could confiscate >95% from the top brackets, and if only it also encouraged actual investment that capitalized production, instead of what has amounted to a sophisticated craps table, we would still see more useful investment from the wealth of the wealthy. Instead of 100% going into gambling, at least 5% would be put to use. And this is not even taking into account that the govt would use that confiscated 95% of their wealth to get useful things done, such as restoring crumbling basic infrastructure, and building new infrastructure to help us reduce energy use.
Please don’t tell me that this is class warfare. You will know that class warfare has begun when they set up the guillotine on the Mall. Maybe we won’t get there if we fix the tax code first.
