The lead story on last night’s local TV news was how Republican Senator Norm Coleman’s house got vandalized by a spraypaint-wielding nutter. TPT’s Mary LaHammer breathlessly insisted that this would result in a "backlash" against Democrats. Except that Keith Ellison’s and Amy Klobuchar’s places got tagged, too — and they weren’t Republicans, last I checked. Contrary to LaHammer’s bizarro assumptions, the tagger (or taggers) was an equal-opportunity pest: “The vandals did not discriminate. Victims are Muslim, Christian and Jewish; conservative and liberal; white and black; Democrat and Republican.” The only member of Minnesota’s Senate and Twin Cities Metro Congressional delegation whose domicile was spared was Betty McCollum –and that’s probably because she lives in a high-rise.
It’s no wonder that a prominent local Republican blogger, the Wright County Republican, loves Mary LaHammer to bits: "Mary’s energy and overall spunkiness lead me to believe that she has possibly more objectivity than any other local newsie."

I’d rather be LaHammer than LaNail.
Waxman coming up on Rachel! (Back to read PW)
Still, better to be LaNail than LaBoard.
Me too… if I only could…
Hello, everyone!
The media coverage on this has finally evened out, but for a while there yesterday it was all Look Look Look At The Poor Republicans Whose Houses Were Defiled By Democrats!!!! (all but ignoring the fact that Democratic politicians got tagged, too).
Oooh! Report back!
Howdy PW. You’re not expecting HONESTY from the reporters or the rightards, are you?
OT: wo0t–Nate Silver now has Obama’s win percentage at 96.3%.
Thank goodness, at least Al Franken wasn’t caught red-handed.
“Mary’s energy and overall spunkiness lead me to believe that she has possibly more objectivity than any other local newsie.”
Boy, is my face red. Here I’ve been looking for intelligence and fact-based reporting, and now I find out that energy and ’spunkiness’ are the keys to being a “real” reporter.
fuck that. I hate “spunky”.
Is vandalism of pol residences a Minnesota thing?
Even “spunky” with great legs?
ditto for “perky”.
The softest target in all of [American] History.
Go Rachel.
Even “spunky” with great legs?
hey, now you’re trying to confuse me. Cut it out. *g*
Still no change in Nate’s predictions re: Senate seats picked up. I’ve got my fingers crossed.
Speaking of Franken, does he have a chance of winning?
Losing political campaigns in Chicago used to phone in or actually bomb their ow campaign offices…allegedly.
In order to get media attention and sympathy.
I don’t see how Graffiti is supposed to get you sympathy from voters.
here in texas they just burn them down. (thing gov mansion)
How about spunky, perky with great legs and deep pockets?
Hum a few bars. I have a vague memory, but need a reminder.
Ah, but you see, the Democrats were only tagged to cover up the plot. It’s a conspiracy, I tell you!
Spunky with great legs just means they’re probably faster than you. Keep your standards low, you’re better off with fat and listless.
Texas governor’s mansion fire may be case of arson
Rachel reports that Karl thinks Obama is tanking the DOW. Logic like this is why nobody watches Fox Business Channel.
I want Obama to give people cable choice meaning I don’t want to pay for Fox News or Lou Dobbs to insult me anymore just because I want to watch Rachel.
from Nate:
Indiana has turned blue on our map.
yay.
(I’m saving the exclamation point for later….)
Last I heard, he’s leading. Give me a minute, maybe I can find something to back it up.
Merci buttercups. Now why wasn’t it a tourist attraction when I was there in July?
Thanks PW.
digg
Bah hahahahaha! The Equal Opportunity Spray Painter Bandit! Oh well. The republicans are trying everything they can to blame liberals for the whole country hating their guts. I bet the spray painter is the son of a republican. Oh boy.
Here’s a link. Self-parody par excellance!
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/…..ket-obama/
What does the Win Percentage figure mean/represent?
How about spunky, perky with great legs and deep pockets?
and a beer distributorship?
quit it!! LALALALA (fingers in ears).
ratfood at 23: wise and sage advice, but I’ve gotta find a middle ground here somewhere….
TPM Poll Tracker is showing Franken with 40% Coleman with 35.7%.
cause it burned in june.
don’t think they’ve finished rebuilding yet.
Heh. It’s just simple tagging by morons, but it’s being treated as a Great Despoiling.
That’s why the ads against Franken have been nuclear lately.
that’s luvly news!
Excellent news! Thanks..)
Wanted to see it in fragante delicto, not in restored form.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_flagrante_delicto
Hysteria appears to be the GOP’s central theme. No matter how much the polls suggest voters are seeing through their fear-mongering this year, they increase the volume with each passing day.
Graffiti really pisses me off. Maybe it’s a nyc thing.
Heh. I think I’ve seen the Obama “Same As Bush” ad 6 times in the last 3 hours, watching KO, Rachel, and before that something on USA. I hope it’s showing up on the channels I don’t watch, because otherwise he’s pretty much preaching to the choir.
That’s why the ads against Franken have been nuclear lately.
I thought Norm swore off negative campaigning during the debate.
Or are they national party ads?
Nope. We loathe it here too, and it does show up. Makes merchants, cops and folks who live in the neighborhoods where it’s being done NUTS.
No ads here. One for Hinchey on CNN in country. He’s the greatest and will have no trouble being reelected. An occasional Obama. But in NYS you’d hardly know there’s a prez election this year.
McCain pledged to take the high road too. Funny how they can make those statements without a trace of irony while standing in muck up to their beady little eyeballs.
It’s my historic preservation thing, too. Grafitti ruins wonderful structures, including modern history. Maybe that’s why the negatives resonate in Savannah.
Here’s a blond question. Why do you think that is?
Negative ads against Franken strike me as being raw material for him!
I lived across the river from Cincinnati in 2000. I almost threw a brick through the TV. I have never in my life been subjected to so many political ads in my life. Not just for the presidency — this went all the way down to local alderman races. I thought I would go out of my mind. Be grateful you don’t live in a swing state.
Same in Illinois. I like it this way.
As a blond, I resemble that. Bringing it up for two reasons: (1) jealosy that we don’t count; (2) a reminder to those in “battleground” states that they are experiencing something that not everyone is.
eCAHN, what do you think about the Bloomberg/Council move?
Presumeably only in certain areas of Il? So Il is quite conservative, I understand. Can they not throw the state this year?
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/…..ket-obama/
Funny Higher Taxes, Jobs and more government regulation of the financial industry is just what FDR did.
I wonder what Karl is invested in?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin_D._Roosevelt
Bullsh*t bigtime. NYC Council threw aside two referenda. If voting would make a difference, they wouldn’t let us do it. And Bloomberg will probably win, more’s the pity. Voters are always looking for the Great Savior. Spit.
Not a chance. I don’t think Illinois has gone to a Republican presidential candidate since ‘88 (if then, I’ll have to research it). Then, factor in Obama being an Illinois senator. You are right about downstate being mostly conservative but not enough to tip the balance.
(1) jealosy that we don’t count;
hey, welcome to my world (well, not this year – we’re actually in play)
Evan Bayh today, at the Obama rally, was trumpeting that Indiana is no longer a “6:01 state”.
As in – Indiana, in most cycles, gets called for the repubs at 6:01 P.M., when the networks come on the air with the first election results….
NYT’s Editorial – Barack Obama for President
Sounded like that was Olbermann’s take too.
I know you’re blond. Me too.
You’re famous, you know. From the meet-up pix.
I just thought I should know, but didn’t.
Your answer makes sense.
Danke Schoen. My first husband got a job interview at USIll Carbondale. Was not policially aware at the time, but the general environment made me prefer death.
When we get enuf good Ds in congress, let’s shift our attention to direct election of prez!
I just looked it up and 1988 was the last year Illinois went to a Republican presidential candidate.
Okay, Henry’s coming up on Rachel.
Thought you knew about blond. Couldn’t resist the cliche!
Isn’t anyone going to challenge that in the courts? It seems to be flat-out illegal, given what the people have voted for.
I would feel the same way. Central Illinois is pretty conservative but this is a college town so there is an abundance of us socialism-loving librul types.
you mean drop the electoral college, I assume?
yes, please.
:) It’s a cliche I enjoy using. I guess it’s a double snark thing.
Don’t know. Following this from a distance (country). Need to listen to Brian Lehrer on wnyc, which I haven’t done for quite some time. You’ve inspired me to look up his recent programs to see what he & his guests & callers have to say.
The socialists are taking over you know?
Thanks for posting this! [slinks off chagrined that someone from Arizona posted it before the former New Yorker who wades through the Times every morning…]
Just kidding about the slinking… Thanks!!!
At least drop electoral college. Maybe direct election nationwide? Haven’t thought about how that would effect minority rights, however. Much consideration must go into replacement system.
You betcha!
I suspect Franken…after all, those Judaics actually read the Bible. Doubtul that it’s a fundamentalist. The Psalms is something they generally avoid…too much sex.
Electoral college drop-out?
Yep, not even gentleman’s Cs.
One person, one vote. Get rid of electronic machines without paper trails, so there is a copy of my vote printed out for me, and a copy of my vote stuffed into a locked box if needed for a recount. It seems frightfully simple, assuming, of course, that the allocation of voting machines is based upon population not race…
Electoral college drop-out?
I don’t remember going to that college.
‘Course, I don’t remember much about the colleges I did go to.
Whatever they were…
One person, one vote gives no grace for minority rights. Want to avoid the tyranny of the majority as well as the tyranny of the minority. Tricky business with no easy answers. If you don’t believe me, think of the problems associated with the Arab Sunnis in Iraq.
Lani Guinier wanted to do cumulative voting, but I saw that vastly abused in my NYC coop.
As I said, difficult problem. No easy solutions.
oh LaHammer – careful or you might be nominated at:
http://www.buttheadpolice.com
like McCain and Palin, to get a butt stamped on your head. LOL. Great site.
What is “TPT” ?
LaHammer, if she named her children like Sarah Palin does there’d be a Ballpeen and Claw.
Round up the obvious suspects…the Judaean People’s Front, the Judaean Popular People’s Front, and the People’s Front of Judaea.
I know, way epu-ed, but PW if you’re hereabouts, how ’bout that Arne Carlson. Woo-hoo!
And Barbara, we’re thinking of ya, there will be a brighter tomorrow….
Do they somehow claim Obama changed laws a decade ago to put us in this mess and that all he has to do is snap his fingers and it’ll go back up? What a crazy time we live in.
Even with all the things government is doing to fix the situation, and that’s not insignificant, I still wonder if there’s any possible solution short of getting all the toxic assets off the market; that’s a huge problem since they’re fractured and distributed worldwide. If it’s not really possible it means someone set this up to leave the next administration with a Japan-like decade-long recession — intentionally!
This goes a little beyond what would traditionally be called hardball politics. This is more than just a Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy. This is really really huge.
What’s the deal?
Bush himself said (after announcing he had canned KKKarl) they’d probably all be put in jail. I suspect he knew what he was talking about.
However, aside from just determining what happened, identifying the perps and perhaps jailing a bunch, there’s still the major problem of Reality to deal with. People are losing homes, retirement savings and perhaps any feelings of security and stability they have worked their entire lives for. It’s a little more serious than someone spray-painting graffiti.
In a sense it’s all ridiculous kabuki. I mean, it shows Republicans to be petty, somewhat fascist, incompetent, vile and all the things we’ve said about them for years. OTOH, Republicans want to show Democrats are socialists, can’t govern, don’t understand Freedom, aren’t Patriotic, etc. But, it’s ridiculous because the public gets all those arguments and either believes or doesn’t. What’s going on doesn’t change any of that. This situation is very much kabuki, but to some end. What?
Is it merely creative destruction on a massive scale?
Democrats need to think very much outside of the box to get the whole picture to see the dynamic and where Republicans and their friends want this to go. It is, after all, global in nature and not just election politics (as if Bushies care about McCain or this election outcome) or simply financial theft.
