Local hero Paul Krugman discusses his other day job
Yesterday, as I was working on something else, I happened to come across something that reminded me of an interesting contrast. As everybody knows, the general rap on me is that while I may be a good economist, I’m just too shrill and one-sided as a columnist.
Anyway, you can see the difference between what I do and what’s considered balanced and respectable by comparing this with this.
"This," Krugman’s intemperate response to the aftermath of Katrina
Before 9/11 the Federal Emergency Management Agency listed the three most likely catastrophic disasters facing America: a terrorist attack on New York, a major earthquake in San Francisco and a hurricane strike on New Orleans. "The New Orleans hurricane scenario," The Houston Chronicle wrote in December 2001, "may be the deadliest of all." It described a potential catastrophe very much like the one now happening.
So why were New Orleans and the nation so unprepared? After 9/11, hard questions were deferred in the name of national unity, then buried under a thick coat of whitewash. This time, we need accountability.
First question: Why have aid and security taken so long to arrive? Katrina hit five days ago – and it was already clear by last Friday that Katrina could do immense damage along the Gulf Coast. Yet the response you’d expect from an advanced country never happened. Thousands of Americans are dead or dying, not because they refused to evacuate, but because they were too poor or too sick to get out without help – and help wasn’t provided. Many have yet to receive any help at all.
There will and should be many questions about the response of state and local governments; in particular, couldn’t they have done more to help the poor and sick escape? But the evidence points, above all, to a stunning lack of both preparation and urgency in the federal government’s response.
and "this" the Serious response from the Washington Post’s own David Broder, the "Dean" of insider political journalism
It took almost no time for President Bush to put his stamp on the national response to the tragedy that has befallen New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, a reminder that modern communications have reshaped the constitutional division of powers in our government in ways that the Founding Fathers never could have imagined.
Because the commander in chief is also the communicator in chief, when a crisis emerges the nation’s eyes turn to him as to no other official. We cannot yet calculate the political fallout from Hurricane Katrina and its devastating human and economic consequences, but one thing seems certain: It makes the previous signs of political weakness for Bush, measured in record-low job approval ratings, instantly irrelevant and opens new opportunities for him to regain his standing with the public.
(image: the resting place her neighbors had the opportunity to build for the instantly irrelevant abandoned body of Miss Vera Smith)

Julia!
David Broder needs to take a very long walk off a very short pier over very deep water.
God save us from serious people. Let’s get some clowns back in charge.
David Broder is the best argument I have ever seen for a mandatory retirement age.
Get get pissed when I see that photo of Ms. Vera Smith, pissed at the FU attitudes of Bush, Broder and the rest of the f*cks that stood by and didn’t care.
In this context I think “Dean” can be defined as, “revered Monarch of the Beltway Village Idiots.”
Good for Krugman!
What do you want to bet they can arrange that down in New Orleans?
I will have the very great honor to vote for Al Franken in a scant 13 days!
That, or better vetting before hiring.
julia! krugman!
Or just arrange for him to fall into a levee somewhere. There is a fine old tradition of that down there, though generally involving folks of a darker complexion.
Can’t you vote earlier?
These are dated quotes I hope.
We all know Broder is The Fluffer In Chief.
We also know that George W Bush left an entire United States city to die.
To be fair, I’ve never seen the two of them in the same place at the same time… You don’t suppose..?
That, or better vetting before hiring.
Which century would that vetting had to have taken place for Broder?
I’m thinking he predates “vetting”.
He had a good excuse, he was servin’ cake to John McCain at the time.
I did my voting today. Even posted all the pix. I vote in an upscale grocery store, which is a bit unusual.
Great Post Julia!!!
The 9th Ward is still in ruins.
LA parishes have been hit brutally since.
The Texas coast lays in ruins today…hundreds of people are still missing. No one cares.
Bushco is despicable and any reporter that defends their sorry a**es in any way is despicable.
Spit.
I’ve been sent ‘voting cards’ from John McCain, the NRA, and the RNC which give an almost credible impression that I can. I’m saving those to show my grandchildren what it was like in the days of fascism.
F*cking Broder would chastise Jesus for intemperate behaviour in turning out the money changers from the temple.
The Broder Bounce!
-G
Of course he would. Jesus was a DFH.
Would call him a socialist.
Weren’t he and McCheese standing there when it happened?
Actually, they were being chased out at the time. 8-)
Broder spins Bush almost as well as McPalin’s people spin all their goof ups.
Digg it.
well, he is a professional fluffer, you know.
Dugg it like McCain dug the grave of his campaign.
So if Jesus was a DFH, the bible loses track of him for several years, and he could turn water into wine – I’m seeing a screenplay:
“Jesus – The Party Years….”
ROFL – and expecting a lightening strike at any moment.
The book has already been written.
I’m very well-grounded – you can ask anyone.
(Anyone that doesn’t know me, anyway….)
I won’t rest easy until the graveside service is over… say around November 5th.
dammit – another perfectly good screenplay down the
toobztubes…Early bedtime for jayt – gotta get up early to see ‘That One’.
Niters, all.
I saw a piece on Fox News a few months back where they made the claim that “Bush really feels bad about what happened there.” Well, if he felt so #$%@% bad, where the &%$# is the %$$&**@@ money they need to rebuild the place?!?!?!
BTW, whatever happened to those wildfires in California? I heard about them as they were happening and immediately afterwards, but nothing since then. I betcha they got their rebuilding money!
Aloha, Jay! Aloha Ya’ll! ;-)
I’ll bet it was real GOOD wine too, none of that screw-top Boone’s Farm swill like a FALSE prophet might have made.
November 5th is going to be interesting in my little town. It is so full of rabid McPalin people that I halfway expect some kind of violence directed at we Obama people.
makes me so mad, i can’t even see straight
Well, he is a Republican and they are known to be allied to the undead. I think we should drive a stake through his heart on Nov. 5th, just to be sure. We really don’t want Zombie McCain wandering around.
boa noite jayt
Night.
Hi and bye, CT. Have a splendid evening, all.
Two Buck Chuck I think.
sleep well jayt
Aloha, ratfood!
I pondered the stake thing but feared it could be construed as an act of violence. Maybe we can fill him up with steak and the ticker will take care of itself.
I was part of that. Didn’t lose my house though.
Who’s the They you’re talking about.
Sorry, can’t tell what you’re trying to say.
I’m still cleaning up from the mess…no one’s helping me do that though.
wanna bet?
g’night
boa noite ratfood
(((demi)))
Good luck with that. Hopefully everyone will perform their civic duty in a civil manner.
Whew! Don’t miss Colbert and David Frum.
Won’t be Ponderosa Steakhouse steak soon…! ;-)
An attack before 911 was anticipated..at the Towers…check out the Air Force Manual 1999…
http://www.thememoryhole.org/911/managing-wmd.htm
I’ve had both of my Obama signs stolen, as have others in the neighborhood. I don’t wear a bumper sticker because of incidents like the one Betsy blogged about the other day where the woman’s car was trashed. That happened about 20 miles from where I live.
Sit on yer front porch after dinner and make a show of cleaning a shotgun.
Even Wingers get that message, trust me.
Hey you!
Big winds up here. You wouldn’t believe the soot that has blown into my house the last two days.
But, we’re good, how ’bout you?
(and, oh, since my girl is coming tomorrow, you KNOW what I’ll be doing All Day tomorrow.) :)
PS Did ya call your momma?
sigh. people need to grow up!!
Time for Gnome to clear all the bushes in front of the front porch!
We really need to cut down on our Pentagon spending…! ;-)
The traditional media doesn’t appear to have commented much on the area that was hit by the wildfires. I was reading their lack of attention to the area as being that the problems there were being cleaned up in a reasonably competent and timely fashion.
In contrast, people mention Katrina every time Dear Leader drops in for a visit there.
Nah, I haven’t really looked into the situation, these are just my general impressions.
yeah i saw the tv footage of the high winds. they haven’t reached us but i see that rancho cucamonga is on fire.
i did call my mom but she was asleep at the time lol. we talked today so it’s all good
hardly and come rainy season, we’ll have to worry about mudslides
I think if we cut it by 2/3 they might find a more useful way to spend it. We would still account for more than 1/6 of the total defense spending in the world
Sad that we account for more than half of the world’s total defense expenditures…! 8-(
Do your impressions hold that the media does a competent job covering anything?
The whole day after we were evacuated, the tv was on at my mom’s, where we went. The banner at the bottom of the screen never changed all day! The updates scrolling were never changed. I had to call the fire department to find out what was going on.
A nearby resident on my route to work had his Obama sign stolen and replaced with a McCain sign. He fixed it back in a day. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. I thought I had remembered this one Obama sign among the sea of McFascist signs.
So I’m making an uninformed assumption. *Sigh*
Hate it when I do that!
Sorry to hear things are awful there.
There is no porch there – it just looks like it! Besides, everyone here has a shotgun. No big deal. Except maybe I’m a better shot than most people.
Well when you are the biggest bully you better carry a BIG stick, those are really expensive…..
Let’s hear it for family!
We’re going to have a great time at the beach this weekend. Weather’s perfect, don’t you think?
After I clean every single horizontal surface in the house tomorrow, I’m baking a cake!
you didn’t think that he’d switched candidates?
Is it a Phillies cake?
In 2004 my car was keyed in a grocery store parking lot…… all around where the bumper sticker was…….. and up the back of my explorer……
I’m off to bed. Busy day corrupting America’s youth tomorrow. Take care and enjoy (also vote!).
boa noite dr dick
He certainly told his followers to share.
Geneva Study Bible Acts 2:45
And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
Yes. My last one was replaced with a McPalin-Palin sign. Instead of removing it I got out the red paint and a paint brush and put a big red circle with a slash through it on both sides. That has not been removed but seems to have gotten a lot more attention. I was sure that whoever did it would take the no-McCain sign back, but it has stuck.
Sleep well Dr D.
Bully is an apt descriptor…! Sad we can’t even win wars with that big expensive stick… Maybe we should speak softly when wielding it, eh? ;-)
Aloha, DD!
That one looks yummy, but, no, this will be a b-day cake. But, I did get Dodger Dogs! (ducking)
I usually do the camping cooking up really swell, but, after the last week or so, I’m a bit drained and am going with the easy, traditional beans and franks. Ha.
Let us hope that speaking more softly is given its due respect.
your baking a cake in this heat? you brave soul *g* perfect weather for beach camping but i’m tired of this heat even though it’s been cold as hell at night
Don’t leave the cake out in the rain, demi…
I don’t think that I could take it.
that is more powerful than an obama sign. still wished you had ur sign back
Sorry to hear that but that was in a parking lot. I had a lot of problems with theft and Meth heads at a former residence until the day I sat on my front porch and cleaned my shotgun while chatting with a neighbor.
Amazingly the crime moved three blocks South.
One of my favorite things – Bush’s Baked Beans.
cause it took so long to bake it
and she’ll never have that recipe again.
You’re right. I’ll bake the cake before I clean the house.
I did bake a huge pan of enchiladas this afternoon, though. The boys devoured them.
There’s a line in the play Children’s Hour. Cooking always makes me feel better.
And, it does.
We’ll be at Leo Carillo. Just above Malibu.
g’night pups.
Welcome sophiehunter,
I love to see you here!
Funny. But, truth be told, that song always drove me a little nuts. There. Now you know why I am the way I am.
Honey, that’s what I bought to take. How’d you know?
Thanks, I love to be here!
They are the best!
*gah* This pisses me off…
Apparently, he never got the memo…
me too. ythat’s why i want this damn heat to stop. i want to bake stuff *pout*
carillo beach will be really nice. nothing like sleeping to the sounds of the waves
Aloha, Ma’am! Pain-Free sleep wishes as always…!
bratton needs to concern himself with the rape kits the dept has failed to process. the damn statue of limitations is up on over 200 of them. wanker
Don’t tell him where I’ll be this weekend.
If he shows up, I give him a hot dog, but no cake.
And, no beer neither.

peaceful rest
Oh, no!
There will be another song for me,
For I will sing it.
thanks CT, might want to add “seizure-free”. It’s feeling like one of those nights.
Heh, strictly BYOB, eh? ;-)
cool – Al Jazeera is going to cover election day from Wasilla…heh…
I’m flashing back to the photos of my parents in all their disco finery.
Heading off to bed too….. have my full body CT scans tomorrow morning and need to get my beauty sleep……. Nite everyone
G’Nite Texas Betsy.
Dream of cakes…..
Broder was known as the “Dean” of Beltway Blowhards. A more apt moniker would be the “Dunce” of the Beltway.
Ooh, that hugs M’dear! You’ve got my healing prayers…!
I love Jimmy Webb songs, even if I don’t get the lyrics.
heh indeed. I can’t wait to see Mccain concede the election.
Aloha, katy!

BYO Everything. ‘Cept the dogs.
That’s a riot, ET! Al Jazeera does have a sense of humor! ;-)
LOL I never knew who wrote the song, just have heard the song (a la Donna Summer) a billion times
MacArthur Park is much older than that. I first heard it when I was in high school in … well, a long time ago.
G’Nite Katy. Hope the scans go well.
I’m heading off too. Mama’s tired.
Donna Summer, feh!
The definitive version is Dee Barton’s arrangement for the Stan Kenton orchestra. Or maybe Maynard Ferguson’s version…
I’ve seen some of their reports on the election. They touch the racism angles very well.
Sweet dreams and happy beans and franks.
I’ve subscribed to them on You-Tube and enjoy a lot of their coverage! Inside Iraq is one of my personal faves…!
lol well i am a youngster so….. *g*
Your Parents??!!!
Disco??!!
How old are you sweetie?
Twenty?
BTW, I freaking hated Disco.
Thanks. I will endeavor to do so. Hard not to. :)

Did you see that Stevens’ Jury was released early today for being ’stressed out’…? ;-)
HAWWWW!!!!
LMAO!
Ahh, yer a doll honey.
We can’t all be Ornery old bastards, now can we?

Evenin’ all !
ET, what is the feeling in Alaska re. the Stevens trial ? Is the general consensus that he is finished or that the DOJ threw the case in his favor ?
rofl
i guess not but i’m headed in tht direction
Big babies.
Isn’t it great to have friends of all ages?
One of the dearest persons in my life is 90. I call her my fairy godmother. And, she’s a big Obama fan.
She was my 2 year old Sunday School Teacher. The lovingest woman in the world.
Someone over at Marcy’s place said that the Judge issued 85 pages of instructions … that might explain it.
I love Richard Harris as King Arthur in Camalot.
Someone had to teach me, stick around, I’ll give ya a head start!
I heard that as well, but still, to get that bastard Stevens, I still stick with my previous statement.
yes, i love it!!!
i’m holding you to that !!! *g*
I meant Camelot. Musical from a while ago, not sure the year.
He was quite scary in Coma … tremendous actor !
None of the jazz orchestra arrangements would work for dancing. The song was originally written by Jimmy Webb for a cantata that was never performed. Richard Harris picked it up somehow, and had a moderately successful hit with it.
The jazz orchestras picked it up after Harris’ version. As Webb wrote it, the song is in three sections, which gradually increase in tempo. The opening (A) section (MacArthur Park is melting in the dark, etc.) is very slow, the middle section (There will be another song for me etc.) is a moderate ballad, and then a fairly fast closing instrumental break. There is a short coda that returns the A section and closes the piece. All of the jazz orchestrations that I’ve heard adhere pretty closely to Webb’s layout of the song. It’s not great for dancing, but wasn’t intended to be.
Donna Summer’s genius was to set the whole thing to disco beat and run it down. That makes it work on the dance floor.
He was scary in Coma.
cool. thanks for the info. i will go check it out, i do notice that the intro to the disco version does use heavy strings…the only reason i like the song
Here is some good news, unless you are a Republican, BWAAAAAHAHAHAHAAAAA.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…..36968.html
oops, sorry … got my Richard’s mixed up.
Coma was scary, period.
It creeped me out.
Sure. I’m always happy to pass on useless information — just ask my statistics students.
late late nite is upstairs
i had no idea you meant richard harris the actor. wow, now i’m totally curious
Neither a book nor movie I’d recommend to anyone expecting to be in hospital at any time in the near future.
hardly useless. i prefer the term ‘random’
Richard Widmark. I had to check, couldn’t remember which Richard myself.
Suzanne’s linky is to Richard Harris’ version. I can’t bear to listen to it — I’m a musician, and his singing is just marginally better than Shatner’s.
Yes, oddly enough I remembered Harris’s face when a scene from Patriot Games popped into my head and I realized my error …
I don’t recommend being in the hospital ever, had a bad experience myself.
Hey now, don’t be dissing my fellow countryman … *g*
He was okay in his youth.
lol
what version do you recommend?
Ghod, I love my country … Toronto Police offers gun owners digital cameras in exchange for their firearms. – CBC
Hospitals are the worst place in the world for a sick person. If it weren’t for all the doctors and nurses who hang out at them…
Amen to that….
Someone has the concept of shoot all fucked up.
My personal favorite is the one Stan Kenton’s Orchestra did, I think it’s on the Live at Redlands album. But I am a jazzer, and I like the jazz versions.
The PENtax is mightier than the Sword …
I spent a substantial chunk of my youth in Kern County, California. In Kern County, gun control is defined as 10 rounds in the 10 ring…
In my youth I went to a Summer Camp in Kern County, but no guns, arts and crafts and softball and swimming.
thanks
I meant to say not guns, but arts and crafts, softball, and swimming.
Yup. Live at Redlands University, on Creative Worlds Records.
So, they can take a picture of someone shooting them in the belly with the gun they just traded for a camera.
That’s all I have to say on the matter.
That camp couldn’t have been run by the Sheriff’s Department, then. Was it near Tehachapi, Frazier Park or Kernville?
