So the RNC thinks that during a recession, when people’s 401Ks are being wiped out, they’re losing their jobs and they can’t pay their mortgages, the best thing to do is go out and shop…for Sarah Palin. To the tune of $150,000.
The McCain-Palin team are trying to claim that it’s a tempest in a teapot:
"With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it’s remarkable that we’re spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses. It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign." –McCain-Palin spokesperson Tracey Schmitt on this Politico story.
As Ambinder notes, this kind of spending is unheard of on a political campaign, and more akin to the budget for a movie. Let me tell you, I’ve made entire movies where the budget to clothe the whole cast was less than that. It’s an obscene amount of money. It’s absolutely unneccesary, an act of complete excess that shows exactly where her priorities are. If you want to spend that much of your own money on clothes, fine. But she expected someone else to pick up the tab for her to look like a spokes model.
She’s Vanna White who wants to be the boss of the Senate.
It’s predictable that the campaign would try to blame the media for this, but it won’t wash. And it officially ends Palin’s ability to run as "small town hockey mom." You don’t get to shop like Leona Helmsley and then play that class card. She applied for the job two months ago and she still doesn’t know what the duties are, but boy can she charge up a storm! She’s regularly charged her family’s personal expenses to the taxpayers. Why shouldn’t the RNC keep her like the rock star they want her to be?
I do have one question, though. If you’re a Republican who gave money to the RNC during this difficult time, is this what you wanted them to spend your money on? So Sarah Palin could be running around in $5000 suits? Is that the kind of excess that you think she should be indulging in on your dime? Are these the people you’re voting for because of their "fiscal responsibility?" Do you still buy all that "gee whiz, gosh darn it" crap about small town values?
The dress worn by Michelle Obama on The View, which everyone loved, cost $148. Just sayin’.

About Firedoglake
This story is on the Today show right now.
They are saying that Palin has a higher negative for McCain than George Bush and that Obama now has a double digit National lead over McCain.
here are palin’s priorities;
she is trash, if she can get the government to pay for her kids she’s gonna do it, if she can get the government to pay for her house, she’s gonna do it, if she can get the government to pay for todd’s snowmobile fetish, she’s gonna do it
now she’s given a ticket to shop on the rnc’s dime, did anyone for one moment believe she would not take them for all they’re worth?
she has NO loyalty to anyone but todd, she doesn’t even want to alaska to be part of this country and her husband was in a political organization that calls for the disbanding of this nation
her priorities are like so;
“I am going to take you for all I can get”
Her wardrobe cost more than my house.
That’s true as to me, even after 11 years, three refis and a little equity mining.
More importantly –
I suspect Obama’s campaign could find a lot of Dems in and around Pittsburgh who could stand in front of their solid, brick, Pennsylvania single-family homes that they bought within the last couple years and say that. They never really had the real estate price bubble there and there are loads of houses -nice houses in nice neighborhoods – under $150k.
I think it would be a devastating ad.
When you are a star you dress like a star and live like a star. That is, others pay for your necessities. She is a perfect model for what it means to be a rethuglican: what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine also. She can just give the repug faithful a wink and a smile to calm them down because the faithful realize that this is her prerogative.
I dunno ’bout no hockey moms but we were soccer parents and nobody i knew dressed quite like that. what’s with the Louis Vuitton (sp?) bag (I guess those are expensive) piper is dragging around?
Thanks Jane.
digg
Luv the Leona Helmsley line, I’m hoping this story has leggs.
that would make one powerfull add scribe, he would have to add that she bought this wardrobe with someone elses dime, he could add that she charges the state of alaska for her own house too
That’s a brilliant idea.
The Today show saying the Elderly vote is shifting towards Obama and that it is the death knell for McCain.
They are also hammering Palin, 55 percent polled say she is not fit for the office.
but John Edwards had a 400 dollar Hair cut
wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhmbulance alert
the thing is, she looks REALLY bad in her costumes, I don’t know who dresses her but she has no clue on what to wear to look presidential
she needs to get some clips of hillary and copy that style, hillary had the presidential thing going ON
f you’re a Republican who gave money to the RNC during this difficult time, is this what you wanted them to spend your money on?
Well, I’m not a republican who gave money, but yeah, I’m highly in favor of the RNC blowing all that money on their anchor/candidate.
There’s no way those clothes are going to a charity – they would have to take them from her cold, dead hands.
Clothing and makeup costs for McShame/Palin make Edwards $400 haircut look rather paltry.
Maybe the wardrobe is just some fiscal stimulus for sagging retail sales.
Thanks!
Get locals to stand in front of their nice, tidy all-Pennsylvania (or all-real Virginia or all-real North Carolina) house and point at it and say “Her wardrobe cost more than my house.”
In the local accent.
The locals will eat it up.
You could shoot it in a morning and have it on air by evening.
I’m guessing they meant that the clothes would be donated to a charity for a fund raiser? ‘Cause hey, sure I could pick up one of those $5,000 suits for $11.99 at the thrift store? I could wear it to the soup kitchen. On second thought, I wouldn’t spend even that amount to look like her. I might look so hot that people would be jealous of me.
My wife will certainly side with Palin on this. No, she will not vote for Palin-McCain, but she will show me this as a clear example that we (meaning my wife) do not overspend on shopping!
The Republicans are in damage control saying that the Palin wardrobe will be donated to charity after the campaign. I suppose that sounds better than saying the clothes will be available to those in need after the Rapture.
If I had given funds to the RNC and found out about these extravagant expenditures — I would be very POd!
“Caribou Barbie”
Green Tea Latte $5.95
Saks Fifth Avenue: $49,425.74
Nieman Marcus: $75,062.63
Private Tutor/Civic Class: $200 an hour
Being ready for whatever the RNC throws at you: Priceless.
I had the exact same thought!
No small town America dresser is she.
Waxman has some devastating quotes from rating agencies internal memos and other documents.
I’m with your wife on this one..I dont’ spend near this amount. My husband will be relieved too. ;)
LOL!
lol!
excellent.
All that money, and she STILL looks like a Far Side babe. All she needs are the hornrims…
Sarah Sixpack is incredibly generous, donating her clothes to the needy. It is one thing to be homeless. But you can be a proud American if you are homeless and dressed by our greatest fashion designers. Also on the positive side, Sarah can claim a generous tax deduction for her gifts to the under privileged.
Republican women, such as Barbara Bush, do not get enough credit for the kindness they show to the poor people.
That seems to imply that the clothes won’t be needed to oversee the Senate while exercising all of the flexibility in the Constitution and doing good policy things.
These clothes will look great in the house that Todd built.
So. . . is this clothing actually a “business expense”? Someone ask Leona Helmsley.
What a terrific idea. An ad like that would play very well here in NC. People cannot fathom paying that much for clothes.
Even those I know who can afford it would find it very unseemly…..also very “un-Christian” to waste money like that.
no kidding!
and i thought this would be a boring hearing. so far not.
for details, here’s selise’s diary on the hearing. I sure appreciate your take on the hearings, eCAHN.
See, now I find Henry Hot! Kinda funny looking, but oh so smart. Intelligence is so sexy. More so than high priced suits.
U betcha!
you know scribe, I believe if you did some kind of youtube like that, we would post and link to it and you would go viral and become huge for obama.
huge
I’m another one of those folks who can chime in and say that her budget cost more than the house I bought 3 years ago. It’s absolutely mind-boggling.
Leona went to the Big Tax Shelter in the sky.
She could dress several small towns on that budget.
Here’s some more good news for Palin. I think this $150K represents taxable income.
By stating that the clothes would be donated to charity after the campaign, is that a tacit admission that the RNC expects to lose?
Cannot imagine VP Palin dressed in her usual Alaskan garb as she runs the Senate. *g*
Jane, since you have probably had some experience with “the clothing going to a charitable purpose after…”. I wonder what that means. Does that mean they would sell the expensive clothes for the purpose of a charity? Or does that mean they would give the actual clothes to some charity. And if so what would a charity do with such expensive clothes?
Also, if I had given to the campaign in order to help get my candidate elected I would not want someone deciding to spend my money irresponsibly and then for them to think that I would be okay with that since later the expenditure would be going to some charity. If I had wanted to give the money I gave to the campaign to some charity, I would have done so on my own.
I’ve got $50 right here that says the “charitable purpose” that those clothes will go to is an auction to fatten up the RNC coffers.
Joe Lieberman wouldn’t have needed a $150,000 wardrobe. He might have benefitted from the civic lessons, however.
Shays is doing opening statement for Rs. Sounds like he’s never seen the text before. Stumbling over simple words.
I thought she liked to sell stuff on e-bay
Sarah’s gotta look good for her deposition Friday, ya know.
Though all she really needs is a t-shirt that says “I’m with the Perjurer” (with an arrow) as she sits by the First Dood.
This is Shays last hurrah.
sure now, clearly the “donating to charity” was an afterthought after they were outed.
Now I want to hear her rip off Nixon’s Checkers speech – let’s hear about Todd wearing a respectable Republican cloth coat when he could have a wolfskin coat in the closet at home!
Ha. Waiting for Shays to say Fannie/Freddie. And I was not disappointed.
Well, she likes to LIST stuff on e-bay. As far as actually getting it sold, not so much.
This is what I was talking about.
I hope so, but it’s no certainty that Himes will win. It’s where all the hedge funds are located.
Michele Obama got raves for her attire, Caused fashion stampede. She spent how much? Money can’t buy class.
Leona went to the Big Tax Shelter in the sky.
(gives Busted a solid shaking)
Busted, ya gots the “Up is Down” disease !!
that is a shock! That has been the diversionary meme.
Any word on how much of that was spent on lipstick?
Do candidates receive a salary or stipend from the campaigns?
The costume bill is a warning to how much McCain would spend on an inauguration ball. The Rethugs are so tone deaf. Didn’t other presidents tone down the personal spending (minus Chimpy) during rough economic/war time?
Hmm, the latest version of the AP story on the wardrobe dysfunction has this little tidbit:
Any CPA’s or attorneys wish to comment on this? Is she in violation of the law?
Leona is busy putting mints on the demons’ pillows and turning down Satan’s bed.
Does he sound drunk? If it’s bad, I’d want to tape it and send it to the Himes campaign or CTBob.
All of it
That’s a great question. And speaking of that, will there be a verdict in the Stevens case today?
I figured it out last night. The reason the McCain-Palin campaign is failing so miserably, is that they don’t spend ENOUGH on Sarah’s wardrobe. I hope the RNC buys her another $500,000 or $1 million dollars worth of clothes over the next 12 days.
I wonder if we should stakeout the men’s stores in St. Cloud, just to make sure Elwyn Tinklenburg doesn’t loose his head and go on a binge.
Even if he’s not drunk I’m sure he’s gonna need to be taped for posterity. He’s in his last throes.
No, didn’t sound drunk. More like some staffer wrote it and he was seeing it for the first time.
Does he have a drinking problem? Would he be under-the-influence at 10am?
hee hee hee
This whole thing sounds like redistribution of wealth.
GOP donors -> VeeP Candidate (and family – I was wondering where Bristol’s trueloveforever got that really nice suit)
ET have there been any further developments over the question of the Palin’s house?
Hard to say if we will get a verdict, but it does go to the jury today.
The costume bill is a warning to how much McCain would spend on an inauguration ball.
Wonder what it might cost to rent a double-wide for Sarah’s celebration kegger?
Dearest Jane,
You obviously didn’t get a chance to read my comment from downstairs.
It’s ok to spent this money because Courtney Hazlett of MSNBC says so.
Versailles was a small town.
OMG, second witness testified that he couldn’t get his rating agency to pony up money to update his “models” of the mortgage market after 1998 because of the firm’s focus on profits & cost cutting.
What a load of crap. You didn’t need any fancy “models” to know that the housing bubble would burst.
I was wondering do women in small town amerika wear the same outfit twice?
No Versailles was a Palace!
RNC spends twice as much on makeup for McCain than Palin
None that I’m aware of, except that a lot of reporters have been trying to gain access to particulars on the materials list for the building of the Wasilla sports complex.
I’m more concerned right now with what Sarah is going to wear to her deposition with the Sate Personnel Board investigator, on Friday. I really think she needs to go out and buy something new for the interview, don’t you…?
Jane just ran Vanna White smack. That’s most excellent.
All along McCain’s been calling Obama the elitist. McCain, the man with more imdb listings than likely the rest of the Senate [The Village?] combined….
Now La Diva Sarah takes on the trappin’s of big city livin’.
Alaska’s Favorite
GovernorGrifter risin’ to the occasion. Wonder what the RNC’s idea of charity is? Maybe the wardrobe’s going to pay for wingnut welfare.Or she can wear the suits at the Palin Palace hockey arena when she gets back to Wasilla.
Still is. But it is also the name of the town in which it is located.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Versailles
Kind of like the wardrobe to nowhere. I heard Sarah said thanks, but no thanks, but then decided to keep the duds anyway. She’s such a maverick that way.
Thank you. I’m listening to the hearing, but I need your plain speak translations.
The RNC knows that they have to keep people from seeing the real McCain because that one looks to close to death.
I am sure they can count on Palin to be truthful.
What’s holding you back?
I have no clue on how to do video, but I’m sure there are any number of people out there reading this blog who do, and who have friends or neighbors who paid less than $150k for their house.
If it just starts popping up all over the place, with all sorts of local accents (particularly in “battleground” states) and obviously non-actor talent, so much the better.
Versailles, OH is my mom’s home town – and it is smaller than my high school was
where did you hear/read that?
Versailles, OH is my mom’s home town -
Do they pronounce it “VurSales” like they do here for Versailles, Indiana?
Minor edit
fyi – Atrios has been talking about the so called rating agencies for over a year now. including lots of their documented crap – wonder if the Committee Staff is doing some ’sampling’ :D
My son, when he drove to TX, asked for directions somewhere in KY, was told to turn onto VerSales, and drove by Versailles 2-3 times before figuring it out.
my fave is Peru, Indiana – pronounced Pee-Ru of course
And the town was populated with those who served the wishes and commands of the inhabitants of the palace.
I don’t think she’ll let go of them either.
“Oops, I snagged a hole in that jacket, I threw it away already. Sor-ree. And we had a little spit-up accident on the 3rd $5000 dress, so it went in the garbage…”
I’d be surprised if that wasn’t paid out of Edwards own pocket. Contrary to Palin’s, who’s showing herself to be the worst welfare queen.
this is obvious, did you see how she looked on the cover of newweek?
brutal
Just like they do for Versailles (pronounced Ver-SALES)
ps – what in bloody hell is that old crazy guy doin’ campaigning in NH ?!?!? he’s been down 8 for almost 3 weeks. thought it was all about Pennsylvania now
oh and, does anyone wanna take any bets about Sunnunu appearing with the Smiling Corpse ?!?!?
Houston, TX vs. Houston St., NYC
Isn’t that also his only campaign stop today? When running for office, one-stop-a-day screams way-too-old.
I saw that. I don’t think the problem was with the make up, though. How’d you like to see such a close up photo of yourself?
Although, I would have had her use some eye drops.
Here’s the make-up story.

Any thoughts on the Stevens’ case ? Did the Prosecutors throw the case against Teddy Toobz ?
It is hard getting around in the straight farce express when the wheels have come off
My Q, exactly.
Henry Paulson was on Charlie Rose last night. Listening to him, I thought it was a pity he couldn’t have talked to the Secretary of Treasury about some of these things. He said that they reacted as fast as possible to everything. He never did explain why Treasury did nothing between the time the bubble officially burst in August 2007 and when Bear Stearns failed in March 2008 or why even after that he really didn’t do anything. He sort of sealed the deal for me when at the end of the interview he said that George Bush was a great boss to work for. I think that this really says all you need to know about his judgment. I couldn’t help taking away the feeling that if he or people like him are the ones calling the shots on the response to the current economic crisis we are so doomed.
my fave is Peru, Indiana – pronounced Pee-Ru of course
I’ve never heard it pronounced Pee-Ru. We do, however, have a Carmel, Indiana.
Accent here is on the first syllable, unlike the California Carmel.
And Carmel is a rich, blood-red R stronghold, where “driving while black” is still good probable cause for traffic stops. Hell, they lost a law-suit on that issue, and they still do it anyway…
although it could all come down to predictable ineptitude – when the book about that campaign is written, suspect we’re gonna find out staging and pace had everything to do with certain lobbyists wallets and certain clauses in their contracts
…or giving your candidacy over to carnies :D
Spencer Ackerman has a new cross-post from Attackerman on the front page of the mothership: “You’re The One For Me”
As near as I can tell, they haven’t done anything yet except issue RFP and hire people. The FRB has been busy beavers, but Treasury, not so much.
must be a midwest
thongthangthing.I’ve only heard it pronounced by folks from the Lil Egypt region of Illinois – may explain it
There’s are a bunch of towns in Central Kentucky that have the names of European cities. I heard the story that one guy came into the corner store shortly after the start of the Second World War. He said that he had heard on the radio that the Germans had taken Warsaw and were marching through Paris and Versailles but he was damned if he was going to see them come through London.
yup, and its right next to Russia (ROO-She)
Bourbonnais, Illinois pronounced Bur-bone-iss.
Would that be around Cairo (kay-row), Illinois?
Keeneland!
this is a quibble but don’t diss local pronunciations; I live in SE PA, near Lancaster (Lan-kest-er), Lebanon (Leb-a-nin) and Reading (Red-ing). When people mispronounce them as Lan-ka-ster, Leb-a-non`, or Reed-ing, it hurts my ears.
say

We’ve got a MAD-drid (Madrid) in New Mexico, and we have a Rye-o Grand (Rio Grand) in Ohio. And a Nurk.

You’re The One For Me: Al Qaeda Endorses McCain
Spencer’s up
What American accent do you have?
Gee, can I be the bag lady who gets the Louis Vuitton handbag and the alligator shoes?
Meth capital on the SW
I believe the primary reason for selecting her for the rôle of Senate boss was her potential qua clotheshorse. She’s certainly honed the neighing down to an intolerable dissonance.
Gawd, totally true.
I live just outside of Pittsburgh in a small county of about 179,000 and I can guarantee you, an ad like that would just KILL. A house costing $150,000 is one hell of a house around here. $250,000 homes are mansions of a large scale. The average wage is just over $30,000, median rental cost is $340/mo. and average home price is about $100,000. The home price seems inflated to me because my home would list at about $80,000, each of my sisters’ at about $70-90,000. And we have quite nice average homes in good neighborhoods. In large swaths here, you can get 2-3 bedroom home for less than $50,000.
No, really? Madrid? When I left NM it was still mostly ghost town, just started to be bought up by people from the East. Sorry to hear it.
Since I live in Ca those prices make me want to cry. You can’t buy a doghouse here for $150,000
Pure speculation on my part. When someone’s behavior is a little off on more than one occasion . . . Shays seems pretty loopy I guess. And its not just because he’s a Republican.
“If you’re a Republican who gave money to the RNC during this difficult time …”
Well, isn’t the McCain campaign funded by the taxpayer? That means all of us paid for Palin’s shopping spree.
I must admit, I find CA real estate prices utterly ridiculous. Especially for a state with all those natural disasters! And I don’t see them coming down to any reasonable range for actual middle class people anytime soon. Can’t understand how they ever find buyers?
This brings it back to the econ.
Oh, and Kerry, Chucky S, and that other bozo shut your mouth and get off the coattails – you are already in the Senate. I was fine with what Barney said.
PS – is it still a waste if they were stupidly thinking she will be wearing them again in 2 years (Gov), and the again in another 2 years (Prez)?
PPS – TDS piece on Wasilla was hands down the funniest hard news I seen in a few weeks. Especially Daily Show correspondant walking down the middle of a 4 or 6 lane Main Street getting beeped at by everyone. Or the church going guy with the nude tat’s of the women he cheated on his ex-wife with all over his arm. Or the new Mayor of Wasilla who could not even answer what she did beyond a 1 hour staff meeting on Tuesdays and signing checks on Thurdays (no services to oversee even like police or fire).
There is no precident for what a woman dresses like to look presidential.
Some of her outfits are OK, other are not so good. Not as bad as Cindy McCain’s, but then she is only first lady.
Some of Clinton’s outfits where quite bad – but I recall some anger at discussing such things. Now the main theme of the post is the amount of money which is obscene.
But hell the Pope wears like $700 shoes.
Caribou Barbie has spent — on clothes — more than twenty times the average take-home pay of the “small town” Americans whose interests she claims to advocate. Why is that hypocrisy newsworthy; she’s a Republican? Cheney spends more than that, in less time, shredding the documents that the law says American taxpayers own. He’ll spend twenty times that per year on Secret Service, or more likely, outsourced Blackwater Protective Services, keeping the hoi poloi away from his rounds of golf.
Why is it newsworthy? For one, it’s being reported on, at least by DFH’s. Another reason, I think, is that she piles on new gaffs, new hypocrisies, fresh examples of her ignorance every day, but manages to make them all glisten when near each other, as if they were the magic stones in the second Indiana Jones pic. A better politician would sidestep and lose them in the press of daily news. Thank goodness for small favors.
In Ms. Palin, an adult’s power is married to the frustrations and lack of inhibition of an adolescent. Based on her short time as a working politician, I’d say she also has an elephant’s memory and gets more satisfaction from payback than from watching men straddle snowmobiles. She will far surpass McCan’t as a loose cannon in tomorrow’s GOP.
