A new University of Connecticut/Hearst Newspapers poll shows Chris Shays and Jim Himes tied at 44 percent each in CT-04. Which is probably good news for anyone in the district hoping for constituent services from their Congressman.
Watch Shays in this video by CTBob as Shays talks to a guy who recently lost his job, has seen his 401K decimated and is unable to make his mortgage payments:
SHAYS: I can’t help you if you’ve lost your job, but if you had the way…
GUY: I’m not asking you to.
SHAYS: (showing the guy a brochure) This is what I…
GUY: I want you to tell me.
SHAYS: No, I want to SHOW IT TO YOU.
GUY: I want you to show me. You’re my congressman, you should be able to show me without pointing to a book on housing assistance. I don’t need housing assistance. I need to save my mortgage.
SHAYS: Okay.
GUY: Go ahead.
SHAYS: You’re not a good listener.
Shays is the the first one to raise his voice and get irritated — but he then tells the man who is about to lose everything that if he keeps yelling at him, the conversation will end.
Olbermann? Maddow? Stewart? Colbert?
You can give to the Himes campaign here, if you’re so inclined.

Good Morning Jane…. off for a walk and see the sunrise…
ZED…ZED is dead as Shays’ political career…long live the Zedster!!
Sounds lovely. Have a good walk.
Citizen Katymine:
Sunrise was spectacular this mornin’ on the way home from work…enjoy dear, it’s another of God’s little jokes on us…brilliant sunrise ta illuminate a world gone mad.
Jane!! Jane, are you trying to help us give some money to one of those socialist types who does not love Real America, like that other one, Tinklenberg, who has the nerve to run against Michelle B?
Citizen Hamsher:
What do ya hear from Connecticut…is there a Democratic surge in Shays’ future? And what about Rahm “Tiny Dancer” Emmanuel…are you and Howie gunna get sumpthin goin’ with the Latino community in his district for 2010?
Thanks Jane. digg
CT Bob rides again, a liberal/progressive hero!!!!
Good morning Jane.
I like how he looks at his watch, like, can I get out of here right now?
I actually get Himes email, and I thought Himes pulled ahead. There was a debate recently, so we’ll see I guess.
I had a house guest this past weekend who lives in the district (Greenwich). She would have been an old-time rock ribbed R, but the party has deserted her. I told her that the old-time Rs had not prepared for their successors, but that the neocons do, so as near as I can tell the neocons will control the R party for the foreseeable future. She then said that she and her sorts would be independents. I pointed out that gave them no power in a 2 party system. But she’s in a fairly early stage of grief, so she’s not to the point of acceptance. Still hoping for some miracle.
As for the Shays/Himes race, she was noncommital about who would win, which means she thinks Himes has a chance.
The important question should be, is this house-losing constituent a plumber?
If Shays was less than crazy, he would have come up with a sympathetic speech by now to deal with the multitudes who are losing jobs, mortgages and freaking out. Instead he acts like this petty beaurocratic nosewipe. May I refer you to the next office?
Fairfield county is not easy to crack.
I’ve seen Shays on cspan perhaps a half dozen times, senate, hearings, campaign events. Every single time he came across as mean. Is that the opinion of his constituents?
Yes, my guest told me that. The place is packed with hedge funds.
The sun shines on all of us. The part of the world that’s gone mad and also the part that is healing and healthy.
All Republics get a little crazy when they are forced to answer beyond their talking points.
Shays, just like Mcnutjob, thinks he is entitled to be in the Congress.
Are there any bills in the cooker that are supposed to help beleaguered. homeowners save their homes?
Today is the day to pay the piper related to the Lehman mess. Taxpayer bill is about to go up.
We can’t have that, it would be like Robin Hood. Don’t you know the rich haven’t enough money.
More than that. Attitude, e.g. “My son is a democrat. If you want my opinion he’s extremely misguided.” (winston howell the third voice) They think the republican party is for “grown ups.”
It’s just amazing that Bush’s tax cuts for himself, his family, and his cronies didn’t solve all economic problems ever.
Speaking of housing, my guest told me of a McMansion in Greenwich, some 11,000 sq ft (don’t hold me to the details) that was in foreclosure, got sold for something like $2.8 million, the bank’s minimum bid, to the only bidder. It would have gone for $7 or $8 million at the peak. My guest thought that probably shook the rich in Greenwich to their core.
No, I am not a consituent. But I get the sense, that people in the loop think he’s a nutjob.
They think the republican party is for
“grown ups.”criminals.That’s better.
Tons of white elephants in CT, that’s for sure.
Perhaps Thurston J. Howell, III ?
My guest thought that the only use for a monstrosity like that was a youth hostel. *g*
Shays frays.
The GOP-er meltdown is hitting home. Hence the mass mental breakdown on the right.

No there are some that think the republikans are for “grown ups.” I kid you not. And that liberals are misguided. It’s okay to be one in college, but then they expect their children to “grow up.” There really are enclaves in FairfieldCo. where people’s heads are as thick as bricks.
Yes, ah you got the point anyway?
what RM owns
Is Rupert Murdoch taking over the world?
——————————————————————————–
With his latest acquisition of Dow Jones and Co Inc. (much to the annoyance of the Bancroft family) which owns The Wall Street Journal (to name but one), is he taking over the world (or the world’s media/news/film/sports outlets at least!)?
Here is a list of some of his assets..

OT
Bacchus (Frank hearing) is saying that the “market” is working by penalizing corps & people who made bad decisions. No irony. I guess he loves bubbles and crashes.
Well thankyou Bob, if you’re around for this footage.
Wow, sure looks that way.
random asides on Shays -
44% ? CW says incumbent below 50% is in trouble
at last week’s debate, Shays boasted of his 92% positive ranking from League of Conservation Votes – they released their 2008 Scorecard last friday … and gave him a whopping 54% – lowest of any CT pol.
1,802 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Demi:
Bless your heart, keep that attitude I’m a bit too old and scarred up ta see past the hurt and the dyin’…keep yer eyes up and yer heart on yer sleeve and you ken see right past the sunrise.
Alice Rivlin up on cspan. Here’s a pic of her in 1980. She’s the one who’s kneeling on the left.

You’d have to get rid of that damn marble flooring that causes people to slip in the front hallway, first.
a 2 year old piece in Vanity Fair on Hedgers movin’ in to Greenwich
Outrageous Fortunes – Vanity Fair
It strikes me that Shays is prepared to deal with the very poor as a republikan would (some BS on housing assistance that he’s got no hand in) or the very rich (now there’s the money), but he can’t seem to sympathize with those who made a healthy middle class income and are now suffering.
Stiglitz testifying now, CSPAN
what do you mean?
OT but amazing
Looks like a fun read. I’ll get to it later. Listening to Frank hearing on cspan now.
BTW, I had a job interview at a Greenwich hedge fund the day that Colin Powell spoke at the U.N. I got to the office in the middle of it and we all watched it until the end, when the interview commenced. I pointed out during Powell’s presentation that that satellite photo of “mobile biological labs” looked like 4 ordinary rectangles with red circles around them. The hedge fund guys (yep, it’s a real alpha male business) were all in thrall at the overwhelming evidence. Needless to say, I was not offered a job.
Waaaaaa
What the hell do economists know about the finance industry everyone knows that politicians know the best things to do to in a financial crisis, well politicians and Goldman Sachs wackos.
Shays is another politician that is so bloody arrogant that he gets pissed when people question him.
I’ll do you one scarier. I was at a university dining hall. And other students were watching that Powell presentation on a big screen without a single raised eyebrow that I could detect.
One pundit, can’t remember who, recently said that the presentation was all baloney and the only reason anyone believed it was because Powell put his reputation (such as it is) behind it. That’s certainly how it appeared to me. There was no objective evidence of anything in that presentation.
As for university students, most of them don’t think. They just study to get the necessary grades. So not surprised that they would accept anything an authority (like a college prof or Sec of State) says.

Not-Joe The Not-Plumber: More Representative Than We Think
University students don’t think? How about finance folks, eh?
Not even close to thinking. I used to say that the powers-that-be at my firm got up every morning, but on a blindfold and proceded to do what they did the day before. That works fine as long as the market is going up and allows them to confuse brains with a bull market. But it completely messes up at every downturn. But, as a former boss of mine said: That’s what layoffs are for.
So “think.” Nope.
I realized after I left the Street that it wasn’t just the firm I was at, but every Wall St. firm.
I just don’t see the issue with this one. Shays doesn’t really seem too annoyed and the out-of-work guy is pretty obnoxious. Generally I agree with what’s said on this site, but this particular incident seems like a big non-event.
Thank you, Norkse.
I don’t know what old means. I’m 56. Some days it feels older than others.
For some reason, I’ve always worn my heart on my sleeve. It hurts easier that way, but it keeps me “feeling”.
We all have our different ways, don’t we?
We can’t dump Loserman this year, but HoJoe Junior will be a nice substitute.
Whoops! I just found out about this article, and there is a minor correction. I didn’t shoot the video, and the person who did can’t be identified due to work-related issues. But I agreed to post the video for them. So, while it’s a video on my blog and Youtube account, I didn’t actually shoot or edit it.
I was at the event earlier, but was asked to not tape the debate by Fairfield University staff. So I left, and after the debate this person was allowed to tape Shays in the crowd.
