First Maureen Dowd, now it’s DFH Joe Klein:
Time columnist Joe Klein, who’s been a forceful critic of the McCain campaign (and already said he’s unwilling to accept a post-election apology), has found himself without a seat on the McCain or Palin planes the past four months.
In June, Klein was kept from boarding the McCain plane over what they said had been a security issue. More recently, when trying to fly on the Palin plane last week, Klein told Politico over e-mail that the campaign’s response was he “couldn’t be accommodated at this time.”
“I’ve done nine presidential campaigns and this is the first time this has ever happened to me,” Klein said. “I was even allowed—I won’t say welcomed—on the Clinton plane in the summer of 1996 after I was revealed as the author of Primary Colors.”
“I rode with McCain during the primaries, but not since I asked him—at a June press conference—whether he really believed Ahmadinejad was the ‘leader’ of Iran, since he has no control over foreign policy or the nuclear program,” Klein continued. “That was when they suddenly told me that I hadn’t called in time to get secret service clearance. (I had called more than a day in advance.)"
One of the most destructive habits of the Bush administration was denying access to any of its critics, which turned the media into a bunch of "access whores" who just shoveled spin and didn’t offer much in the way of meaningful criticism for fear they wouldn’t get the headlines.
The fact that McCain is already showing these tendencies and blowing off big time reporters would be more troubling if he weren’t sinking like a rock in the polls. As it is, it’s just another symptom of his nasty temper, his sense of entitlement and his proclivity for cribbing his campaign cues from Bush.

Joe? Over here — we’ve got your warm blanket and hot cocoa. Welcome to our side.
Pi**ing off his base, the press. That ought to work well for McCain. /s
talk about meltdown
Guess the Rethugs are not as smart as might have been thought. If you’re going to freeze out the media, at least wait until after the election. Doing so now is simply against their own interests.
It’s no wonder McCain was such a bad boxer. He, like his campaign, must have telegraphed every punch.
Another Joe gets sullied by McCain.
Poor Joe; Maybe Sarah has an open seat on her “Straight Talk Express”.
The problem, now as always, is editors who demanded access above all. They want quotes, not facts. That’s why it’s taken so long to unseat these monsters.
I will not accept McCain’s apologies either.
If anyone here would like to read another good news story about this campaign, I’ve published a story of a new Obama vote over at Oxdown:

Se si pueda!
Here’s a silver lining of the financial meltdown. The supporters of the Rs 527s seem to have been disproportionately influenced and are cutting back on donations for attack ads.

Great point about McCain showing Bush’s desire to control the press with carrots and sticks….Don’t think it’s working out well for him though.
To parody his recent comedy performance,,,”Come on Johnnie- let us show ya where ta PUT that carrot an that STICK!”
Apparently, John McCain , is afraid of the truth!!
Time columnist Joe Klein, who’s been a forceful critic of the McCain campaign (and already said he’s unwilling to accept a post-election apology), has found himself without a seat on the McCain or Palin planes the past four months.
so it’s not that he doesn’t know the facts, he does, and he doesn’t want anyone who DOES know the facts to be anywhere NEAR his campaign
They’re losin faith baby!
Actually, kicking off Howdy Dowdy and Jokeline is the first sign of good judgment I’ve ever seen from McInsane. Those two are vile.
Let’s see McCain is a maverick, except he’s not.
He’s a straightshooter, except he’s not.
He’s a campaign reformer, except when he’s running for office.
He’s experienced, except he’s always wrong.
He will bring change, as long as it looks the same as what we have.
He isn’t George Bush. He just agrees with him most of time.
He knows how to work the press, and that brings us to the current post.
I’d be happy to read some good news
Inspiring!!!
Second panel on Frank hearing seems to be financial industry whores.
o/t
Did anyone already comment on the glaring omission in Palin’s “denouncement” of McCain’s robocalls? It was the method not the content she went after. It was like she was inferring, “I would just tell people all that crap in person like I have been doing. Robocalls are just so impersonal!”
How petulant
Joe should feel lucky they stopped him before boarding… Imagine if they had found out of the secret service clearance thing at thirty thousand feet!
If you leave a comment or recommend the diary, it will move to the Top Ten List and then more people will have the opportunity to be inspired.
Thanks
aHAHAHA HA HA
Joe Klein must have had some sort of epiphany – he’s actually doing quite good work re McLame. Just might have to reconsider some of the bashings dished out in these parts….
beautiful. thanks for sharing that with the rest of us
FYI:
AS PREDICTED – here comes the “Swiftboating of exit polling”
http://news.yahoo.com/s/politi…..tico/14778
The ONLY reason to sow the seeds of doubt as to the accuracy of exit polls is that when you steal the election, the exit polls provide the irrefutable proof that you have done so. This demonstrates the media’s complicity in the conspiracy.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exit_polling
I’m not sure how to do the recomend thing
if I click “recomend” the thumb goes down and I might be ‘unrecomending” the thread
I need to get a clarification how that thingy does
that’s a great diary entry demi
I agree. The same with Chris Matthews.
You’d think if reporters had a lick of common sense, they would figure out that the campaigns and politicians need them as much as they need the politicians. The answer if simple. A mass exodus of reporters from a few campaign planes as a demonstration of their own power would put a serious dent in these sporadic power plays that the candidates and pols are engaging in. That would be especially so if the reporters felt the need to explain their action to their readership in terms the public would understand. You know, it’s the old saying: “never pick a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel.”
Or perhaps they trust the pols more than they trust their colleagues. So what is this attitude, the less for you, the more for me? I don’t know if this is more shameless or more stupid!
Awwww, that just breaks my little pea-pickin’ heart.
as predicted is right, they are already flipping votes, even in the early voting
this is really being gamed to the nines
what is gonna happen if they flip this election, how will the democrats respond?
The sun will not fall from the sky in the near future.
I’m not sure either, but just a happy face in the comments might do something.
It isn’t going to work this time. We will win the election. The republicans are not going to steal it this time. Stop with the chicken little stuff
You’re a brave soul.
(ps, I think the same thing.)
(((((SD))))
that is good news indeed considering how much i like the sun *g*. how are the little tigers? Ihave some pics of weebits I need to post (she is so big now)
DING!
Notice the reaction when that happened recently, the “Oh Shit” moment when they realized the possible ramifications of zero press coverage.
They got that straightened out in a hurry IIRC.
So now Joe kline can feel free to unload on the Mavericky pair.
Negative press from a Time reporter, that’s gonna leave (another) mark.
The funniest thing about the media whores covering McCain is that they are slowly but surely falling out of love, in that way spurned lovers get… it’s sort of like the Kubler-Ross model for Journalists dealing with loss of “access”…
Denial: I still love the guy, and have my (man/woman) crush on him, he’s just having a bad day
Anger: Bastard won’t answer my questions, I guess he/she is just having a bad day
Bargaining: “Oh, come on… I’ve covered the Senator since he was eating the sprinkles off of donuts in Sioux City in a blizzard on that damn bus, now let me on the plane, pleas?”
Depression: “If I can’t get an interview or access, I’ll lose my fucking job”
Acceptance: “He/she was an insincere shithead anyhow, glad to be shed of having to hide my true feelings!”
Where’s your proof? Folks may vote early but they’re not counted until after the polls close on 4 Nov. Gut feelings and allegations are not hard evidence. And exit polls count on nobody’s tally sheet.
Gave your post the thumbs up!!!
OT
I’ve just been listening to MSNBC’s broadcast of a Palin rally.
If this campaign had any more than two weeks left to run, I believe
I’d go insane, or at least into deep depression. The lies and the way
her voice grates are getting to me.
I’m praying for an Obama victory (and I’m not particularly religious) for the sake of my sanity and the good of my country.
This message comes to you from an America hating liberal commie socialist
smack dab in the middle of real America, Oklahoma.
Please pray with me.
spot on
Snicker,snicker,snicker……..a little schadenfreude there!!!!
wouldbe glad to but do you want to associate yourself with a DFB (bolshevik) from the absolutely unamerican state of california and the overrunned city of gays that is los angeles?
I’m doing the Snoopy Happy Dance that we can use the tried and true method of being Positive to bring about a change.
in all seriousness, I can’t wait for Nov 5th.
I don’t usually go on my knees, but for this cause, I will.
PS, If I’m down for too long, I might need a hand to get back up. *g*
(((Demi)))
Thanks, and a nice young pair of hands will be extra helpful. My daughter, who is your age, is visiting me this weekend from DC. We’re going camping together at the beach. Yowza. How excited am I?
I am eagerly awaiting for McCain to TOTALLY revert to his infantile habit of holding his breath until he turns blue and passes out. According to written reports, this was McCain’s childhood temper tantrum of choice, when he was denied “his way”. His parents were forced to immerse him in a bath of ice water to deal with this behavior. Ice, anyone?
The Democrats won’t be the only ones responding if they steal this vote. AMERICANS will respond. Our entire system of governance is at stake.
Judge shoots down Minnesota’s exit polling law as unconstitutional:
http://www.startribune.com/local/31023804.html
The Republicans are desperate to prevent votes from being cast, counted, and believed to be ACCURATE. Casting doubt is the full time job of the Republican party at present.
There can be no behavior more “UnAmerican” than this.
It appears that when you recommend, it accepts that but changes to “un-recommend” in case you decide to change your mind later or hit the recommend button by mistake
Hehehe… be pretty funny to see that. Perhaps the era of entitled children in politics is coming to a crashing halt-o-mundo…
oh that is awesome. I hope that you two have a wonderful time. Hmm I’m going to go call my mom *g*
i want it to be televised and captured on video for posterity
The firm hired to do the robo calls is FLS-DCI. They have a home office in St.Paul Minnesota. They are the PREMIER “go to” telemarketer and PR sleaze shop for the GOP .Google their name,FLS-DCI and you’ll find an endorsement from none other than Turd Blosson himself, KKKarl Rove. t (BTW,one of their biggest clients is AT&T, who just gave McCain free cell towers.) I wonder if FLS-DCI get a “special rate” from AT&T for all those robo calls? You can COUNT on a new wave of slime robo calls in Minnesota to defend Bachmann AND offend ANYONE unfortunate enough to answer the phone!
And a little diary whoring here:
I Coulda Been a Contendah. I Coulda BEEN Somebody
Sorry, that was a response for #54-plunger
thanks, wobs. We’ll get through this somehow.
Seeing people line up for hours to vote early gives me great hope.
Those people are on a mission, which tells me they’re voting Obama.
Great idea- Showing his frizzled ,frozen posterior for posterity!
Oh, so what you’re saying is, his parents were preparing him his whole life for the torture he later experienced as a POW. Most people who have kids that use this form of temper tantrum just ignore the kid. The truth is, as soon as they pass out, they automatically and involuntarily take a breath. Tantrum over.
Blue Texan upstairs!
This Just In: Sarah Palin Still Doesn’t Freaking Know What The Vice President Does
We’re all Daniel Ellsberg now.

Jane,
I posted this item this AM and I am going to suggest again that a petition should be set up to ask the press to ban coverage of Palin until she gives more than one unscripted press conference.
If she cannot meet this totally reasonable expectation of the people for a VP candidate, then she is in NO WAY prepared to be VP. Unscripted press conferences are an everyday event for Joe Biden. Go Joe!!!!
If McC and Palin can commit censorship of the press in a democracy, then the people can demand a censorship of the candidate not willing to discuss issues of the people until she answers up, unscripted, in front of the free press.
http://www.slate.com/id/2202642
Ban her media. Stand by your fellow press core members because you may be the next one censored.
McCain/Palin have it backwards….
The advice is Keep your friends close but your enemies closer.
Which is worse, Klein on your side or on the other guys? Either way, he’s always been a slimeball.
