The presidential debate at Hofstra wasn’t the only political "happening" on Long Island that night. About two miles away, at the Harry Chapin amphitheater at Eisenhower Park, Yes We Can–the local Obama grass roots group–put together a rally.
Word is it was the brainchild of Bob Young’s Belmore Mewrrick Democratic Club and got off the ground with the help of Nassau Obama organizer Val Coryat.
I think that’s her husband, voter protection lawyer Joe Coryat wearing the event Marshall ‘s tee shirt in the footage above at around 7:25 minutes. And that woman with the infectious smile, singing along with the band, looks an awful lot like Lauren Corcoran-Doolin, Long Island Field and Political Director of the New York State Democratic Party.
The Long Island Progressive Coalition threw its weight behind the effort and, woosh, came the Nassau and Suffolk chairs, the State Democratic Party, the New York Democratic Lawyers Council, labor unions and entertainers ranging form local performers to Bruce Hornsby, Graham Nash and David Crosby. Not too shabby for something put together in such a short time, eh?
The setting is beautiful. The weather cooperated and it looks like a great time was had by all. Our own little mini Woodstock–without the hallucinogenics.
To my knowledge, the McCain folks did not bestir themselves to do anything for their supporters on LI–at least I haven’t seen anything in the press or in my email inbox.
You know, Nassau has been a GOP majority county for over 100 years. That is, it was, until a couple weeks ago. Wooohee!
Middle aged, formerly Republican Soccer moms and Little League dad’s going all DFH. My cup runneth over.

Wow. I grew up in Nassau County. Was Elephantland. It and neighboring Suffolk County gave Nixon his largest majorities in 1968 and 1972. Something like 72%. And now Nassau bleeds blue? Did I say wow?
