As I understand it, Colin Powell was a member of the Principals Group and therefore directly approved of the torture of some of the detainees He certainly never denied it when I asked him, face to face on June 12th, why he hadn’t and would he now stand up and tell the US Congress, the American people what he knew to be true, that waterboarding is torture, that sleep deprivation is torture, that sensory deprivation is torture. He gave a rambling answer that went on for five – ten minutes suring which he said “we tried to torture as little as possible.” He is, as far as I am concerned, a war criminal, who should stand trial. If he is a man of integrity, he will stand up at the trial and tell the whole truth about what he knows and what he witnessed during his time as a member of the Bush administration.

Minor nitpick, only two of the three largest (Major) religions come from the same area, Christianity (2.1 billion) and Islam (1.5 billion). The third largest is Hinduism (900 million), though technically it’s fourth, but only if you count the secular/agnostic/atheist/antitheistic/antireligous group (1.1 billion). But I don’t see why that would count, since not having a religion isn’t a religion, but whatever.

I absolutely agree that we don’t know everything, or even the half of it, which is why I advocate, and will be pushing for, an independent, open and thorough investigation into those who wrote the Bush administration definition of torture, those who aided and abetted putting into US policy and practice, those who okayed the torture, and those who actually carried it out, and appropriate, open and fair trials following the recommended charges. I also will be pushing for an independent, open and thorough accounting for all those held in US custody since January 21, 2001, and their treatment, as well as all those renditioned.

– He wasn’t there for Obama until it was all but certain that Obama would be the next president.
– He support for Obama falls hot on the heels of his support for Ted Stevens, which make his endorsement a cheap commodity indeed.

But there is the past:
– The My Lai coverup.
– His participation in the selling of the invasion of Iraq.
– His failure to repudiate and/or whistleblow on Bush’s misdeeds.

I commented on his endoresement speech/comments in anothe thread – from the point of view of an event they were as artful and inspiring and Baccus (MD-06) comments were crude and shocking.

Most people know nothing but vapor about Powell, he has an 80% favorable rating. I hate to say it but knowing the first thing about pols and government puts a person knowing so much more than at least 98% of the country that its sad.

Please try to keep educating people since that is job #1. Also keep in mind in politics you can’t assume people “know” anything, and the “knowing” (both in recall, what are “facts”, and how facts are judged (Ex. some people would love them some nukes dropping in Iraq) changes depending on whose shoes.
