If you saw only the headline of this Wall Street Journal story, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the story pinned the blame for the credit crunch mostly if not solely on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac:
Fannie, Freddie Share Spotlight in Mortgage Mess
Government-Backed Mortgage Giants Are Targets in Political Debate Over What Sparked the Housing Bust
And just to make sure you get the point, here’s the opening sentence:
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have become prime suspects in the political debate over who caused the mortgage meltdown.
However, if you actually read through the article, you find something a bit different (albeit sandwiched in between reams of Fannie-and-Freddie-are-evil-socialist-programs stuff):
Fannie and Freddie do share some of the blame for the mortgage and housing bust. They recorded a combined $14 billion of losses in the 12 months ended June 30, largely because they lowered their credit standards and purchased or guaranteed dubious home loans.
But "they weren’t the leaders in lowering credit standards," said Andrew Davidson, a mortgage industry consultant in New York who has done work for Fannie and Freddie and also criticized them for taking excessive risks. He noted that the worst-performing mortgages are those that were originated by subprime lenders and packaged into securities sold by Wall Street, rather than by Fannie and Freddie. And while loans for low-income people — programs championed by Democrats as well as many Republicans — have contributed to Fannie and Freddie’s losses, they aren’t the biggest part of the problem.
Now for some perspective:
Per the Murdoch-owned WSJ article, Fannie and Freddie had $12 billion in losses from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008. That is chump change compared to the trillions of dollars of losses incurred from the credit default swaps shell game, as looseheadprop pointed out the other day:
Matt Taibbi schools Byron York on the realities of CD swaps to debunk York’s regurgitation of RNC talking points that somehow the failure of some poor people to pay their mortgages on time could somehow swamp a market as huge as the US economy. CD swaps were bet on ALL kinds of securities not just mortgage backed securities.
The CDS market exploded over the past decade to more than $45 trillion in mid-2007, according to the International Swaps and Derivatives Association. This is roughly twice the size of the U.S. stock market (which is valued at about $22 trillion and falling) and far exceeds the $7.1 trillion mortgage market and $4.4 trillion U.S. treasuries market, notes Harvey Miller, senior partner at Weil, Gotshal & Manges. "
Got that? US Stock Market=approx. $22 trillion, Mortgage market = only $7.1 trillion
Swaps market????? more than $45 trillion. Gee, which of these is more likely to have been able to swamp the entire US economy? The biggish $7 trillion wave or the HUGE $45 Trillion tsunami?
Remember, gang: It takes a thousand billions to make a trillion. Fannie and Freddie didn’t bust the US economy, the credit default swaps did.
And need I remind everyone that when the Cons try to push the Fannie-Freddie Myth, it’s their way of blaming poor black and brown people for things that rich white people did?

good morning
our society lead by the GREEDY pukes is sick and needs a high colonic imo
And need I remind everyone that when the Cons try to push the Fannie-Freddie Myth, it’s their way of blaming poor black and brown people for things that rich white people did?
Nah – just let me know
whenif that ever ceases to be the case. But it is so convenient to blame it on darker and poor people, because stereotypes like that are so firmly entrenched. Everyone knows about “welfare queens.” And the numbers are so big, billions, trillions. It is just hard to get the mind around those numbers. Keep it simple. Wash, rinse, repeat.
Mervyn’s and Linens & Things are now out of business
OT – or maybe not so much on a PW post:
Michelle Bachmann might wanna reconsider ever going on Hardballs again.

Are you serious?
didn’t know about the new puppy – very happpy for you. what/who did you get ?
PW-
A very timely post. The conservatives are attacking on several fronts in these waning days of the election. All of the attacks from here on out will be very ugly and untruthful. But the electorate has been educated. The electorate was forced into this necessary education by the out-and-out destruction of their lives by BushCo. These tactics will not work this time because the people have finally, albeit reluctantly and slowly, taken control of their future and the futures of the ones coming up behind us.
Obama/Biden ‘08
She’s another one of those Republican she-whores. What a sorority that is!
Morning PW,
Nice for you to expose the deceptive presentation of the story. Cynical hearts at that paper.
very timely indeed Phoenix Woman.
as noted downstairs, this is my favorite day as a Central Texan – it’s our annual Fall Fest and the day I get to take the Republics lunch money – teehee
will be taking those numbers with me as I settle in to my gooper-blind for a good day’s hunt
hehehehe…I might be a little jealous :)
Good Luck in teh hunt

I’m pantsin’ those f*ers !!!
Michelle is certainly going to regret that Hardball appearance. She’s truly a nutcase.
WHat frustrates me no end is how many of the talking points the Rethugs keep recycling that have been debunked and the talking heads just go oh, umhmmmm and go on to another question.
Give me a comic doing journalism…they get it right. The Dancin’ Daves do not.

I thought there was no clear accounting of the shadow market since there’s no oversight organization to collect data on it. Moreover, the valuation is not known owing to the current status of the market for these derivatives. This leaves me wondering how one can arrive at any number that could be reliable.
With any luck at all, there will be so many Rs out of work after November 4, that even the Wingnut Welfare Machine won’t be able to support them all. Quelle horreur! Some of them may actually have to work for a living!
The days of the gov’t owned media is about to be evolutionized (is that a word?). Online media is in a decent position to take the head spot at the table. Above-average Joe and Jane on the internet have scored.
Very true, and this would be because first off, they never really thought they could ever lose, especially to a black guy.
Secondly, as they see the landslide a comin’ they know it’s gonna take all the Reaganomics bullshit with it.
And lastly, since wingnut welfare can only go so far, many of these WATB’s will have to (gasp!) get a real job!
This would also explain why many of them are jumping off the ship now, and trying to morph back into ’serious journalists’ vs. the GOP water carriers they have been over the last eight years.
Holy moly! What a handsome bundle of sunshine. I love his colouring. Jealous, I am.
You are sooooooo right! They are scared shitless! Good.
More like “Whack-a-Nutcase.”
Announced on CNN a while ago.
Maybe Michelle and Caribou Barbie can do a show together on Fox. Ugh – sorry I said that.

McCain gaining ground in polls released so far this morning..Obama may have won the debate but lost the war…nothing too serious- but the daily KOS polls shows the Obama lead shrinking from ten to seven. One other polls shows a one point Obama INCREASE- and a third shows a one point decline (as I recall).
As I offered yesterday, a fruitcake should be so nutty.
If she does go down the tubes, it would be a watershed moment in politics.
I’m stunned. We have Mervyn’s all over the place. Don’t have Linen
‘n things but we have Bed, Bath and Beyond which is exactly the same thing. Obviously owned by the same company. Losing Mervyn’s will be a huge blow to California – so many people shop there, although I suppose not quite enough did.
It’s going to be fun to watch these talking heads refute their own talking head. They’re so stupid in the fact that they didn’t take into consideration….they were on film spewing all that shit. Just like what has happened to McBatshitCrazySaint, they’ll be forced to see their own betrayal to the masses. It’s a no win argument for the corporate media.
Me, too.
They could be the first all-female ticket in 2012 and run on the AIP or American Nazi Party ticket!

Thanks so much PW. It’s critical imho that liberals/progressives stay on top of this crap that the neocons keep trying to churn to hide their responsibilities.

Obama lead down three in Hotline Poll too- somethin’s stirring apparently.
I think she made a deal with the RNC in exchange for help with her (hopefully) faltering campaign.
What a doll!
I’m waitin’ for the only poll that counts – 4 Nov.
Signed. Hope this petition is on lots of sites. Let’s get rid of this very sick woman.
Linen & Things is in Chapter 11 and being liquidated. Bed, Bath, and Beyond is still in business.
Oh, the Irony. (from reddit). Here is one rich person that will not be bailed out by the neo-cons. But he made lots of money by betting against sub-primes.
I saw that as well, but I think the game now is the electoral college, and I haven’t seen any slippage there.
It stands to reason the popular vote is gonna tighten; IIRC it usually does close to the election.
He’s just got to keep doing what he’s doing; staying on offense and executing the voter turnout ground game and we’ll be fine.
Yeah- that’s the important one- of course by then it’s too late to do anything about it. If Obama wanted to combat complacency- these latest polls should give him what he wants.
See my #11
The national number tends to be a leading indicator followed by changes in the state by state polls eventually…Seems that the race may be tightening- although we’ll know more by next week.
You can bet your a$$ she got paid.

Good post Sister PW, we gotta keep remindin’ each other and all the folks in the swamp who “the enemy” is and at the risk of contradictin’ our most esteemed and venerated political philosopher of the 20th Century (Pogo) I have also seen the enemy and he ain’t us! The fascists are outta the closet, elected members of Congress are callin’ elected “liberals” traitors on national television and the oligarchy is tryin desperately ta get a “voter fraud” case ta the Nazi majority on the supreme court. There is no question in my mind that if these terror tactics succeed in gettin the polls ta reflect single digit margins, there will be Florida-like election days in 4-5 large states including Ohio, Florida and Virginia. Hundreds of thousands of provisional ballots, fascist goons beating up people in lines at the polling places in large cities and the administration sending in federal troops to shut down voting in the battle ground states are all in the script.
You “liberals” out there who have been afraid to stand up to these fascists for the last 28 years better be ready ta hit the streets in front of our kids who are gunna be targeted for the Iraq occupation if this fascist election suppression effort succeeds.
There is no middle ground, there is no compromising our Constitution any more, there is only the strength of numbers and there are a lot more of us than there are of them.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, HISTORY IS OFFERING US ONE MORE OPPORTUNITY TO GET IT RIGHT!!
Bed Bath and beyond is a separate chain.

Morning Pups!! Now that the Rethuglians are in the blame game for this mess we are in, we need to let everyone we know it was the rich 1% of the country who really caused it by their unfettered GREED! We need to have the Glass-Steagleman re-instated! Or maybe even a more draconian rework of the Tax code and take back all the money these B**tards stole from the rest of us!!
Oh don’t forget to DIGG this Great Post by PW!!
Doesn’t anyone here listen to Randi Rhodes? My side is often out to lunch.
Are we more interested in swapping chit-chat, recipes and feeling sorry for ourselves?
This video should be played every time Fannie Freddie are blamed for starting the problem.
Folks, IT WAS A BUSH PRODUCTION from the git-go.

That’s more dayz than our 10,000 day war (VN 1945-1972.)
WRT latest polling, imho McSane’s getting a bounce from Joe the Plumber. AFAIK, Obama/Biden is responding beautifully, finding real, licensed plumbers named Joe to “boomerang” Joe the plumber into a net win for Democrats.
OT, Chicago Tribune endorsed Obama/Biden. Per emptywheel’s latest, newspaper endorsements appear to be landsliding for Obama/Biden.
Thanks, that was funny.
This is a bit off-topic, but y’all need to see what the wingnuts are saying. No, not Rush, Billo the Clown or Shean Insanity, the REAL wingnuts.
A lot of people have worried what might happen in the African-American community if Obama manages to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, but I think what we really have to be worried about is what the wingnuts plan to do if Obama wins.
One thing I think our side needs to do is learn how to defend itself – literally.
I know y’all think I’m a nutjob, but these people make me look like a li’l ol’ churchmouse.
Please read what’s behind the link. It will scare you.
Thanx Dragonman, I guess it really is all the same war ain’t it?
We all do what we can. It all helps because none of us are exactly alike and one person’s strength is not necessarily someone else’s.
This is what a national community looks like.
Keep doin’ what you do.
At least we can get a link right.
Where does the “feeling sorry for ourselves” part come from?
If Colin Powell endorses Obama tomorrow it will cause a very significant bounce – I hope he is asked about McShames tactics and lambasts him.
I hate to admit it but I was in Walmart two weeks ago, mid-day and mid-week (usually slow retail time) and the place was absolutely jammed.
(I prefer shopping at Costco but since I am single now, there are only a few things I can stock up on.)
Holy crap. The video got pulled.
I know it killed ya, first, to have to walk through the doors of Walmart and, second, to see the masses. Don’t sweat it. Change is a comin’.
BUT THE VIDEO BE GONE !

It plays for me.
Hello, gang! Sorry I’m late — was expecting to go live at 8:30 FDL time.
I’m guessing that the ACORN attacks are probably what’s tightening the race, hence the full-court press the GOP’s been doing. Fortunately, the pushback from the Obama campaign should help neutralize this as an issue.
It’s still up. Weichert Realty, one of the signs in the background, is downsizing to one small office in South Pasadena, FL, a small city between Gulfport and St Pete Beach. Marie Powell, a large firm, has also gone to one small office in Largo or Seminole, I forget which. The small mom and pop realty companies appear to be faring better than the megaliths. Competition for rentals is insane. Those stuck with houses are trying to rent them at outrageous prices so the owner can pay the mortgage. An 8 unit condo complex down the street from me, completed almost a year and a half ago, has never had one looker, much less buyer. Developer let it go into foreclosure and this monstrosity just sits there rotting.
Do the republics really think it is to their advantage to blame poor folks for the housing crisis?
I’ve wondering why Obama has allowed Mcnutjob to go around parroting this lie.
They’re blaming it on the community re-investment act and liberal loans to poor people. It’s complete bull, but any port in the storm for the neocons.
A related talking point that came up during some of the debates was that Republicans tried to reign in Fannie and Freddie but various (named) Democrats opposed and ultimately blocked that fine effort. The only problem with that often-repeated narrative is that the Republicans controlled the presidency and both houses of Congress at that time.
Meanwhile; while we are all wrapped up with McShames BS, things are not going well in Iraq. Doesn’t look like bushes latest agreement is going to fly, Iraq legislature may have doomed Odierno, and people keep dying.
http://www.juancole.com/
Sounds reasonable. Obama will have a lot more dough to spend in the final two weeks- a big advantage. I don’t know how much these robocalls cost- may be fairly cheap.
Sorry forgot the OT

If Clusterfuck can’t get an agreement with Iraq by December, what does he do? Start withdrawing? Pretty fuckin interesting game of chicken!
Michele Bachmann just shot herself in the foot, didn’t she?
The video of her went viral almost before she stopped speaking on Hardball.
Read yesterday that in some places Obama is outspending McC by 10 to 1 on ads. Obama had a BIG September – took in about
$100m – BAM!
Al Sadr doesn’t care much for the Clusterfuck status of forces agreement:
“”I am with every Sunni, Shiite or Christian who is opposed to the agreement … and I reject, condemn and renounce the presence of occupying forces and bases on our beloved land,” the message added.
Al-Sadr, who is living in Iran, also cast doubt on the Iraqi government’s argument the security pact is a step toward ending the U.S. presence in Iraq. The deal would require U.S. forces to leave by Dec. 31, 2011 unless Iraq asked some of them to stay.
“If they tell you that the agreement ends the presence of the occupation, let me tell you that the occupier will retain its bases. And whoever tells you that it gives us sovereignty is a liar,” al-Sadr said.
Security was tight as demonstrators marched from the main Shiite district of Sadr City to the more central Mustansiriyah Square.”
would be nice to see her sitting on the curb come November 5th
$7500 per Cong district. But most people hang up especially if they are negative. The backlash that this effort among informed voters will offset any gain. I hope. I still wonder how many low info voters there really are. With McCain-Palin less than double digits behind, there must be more than more than 30%.
Michael Eric Dyson said last night that if Obama were white, he would be ahead by thirty points.
Moqtada al-Sadr holds a fair amount of the cards here, and he knows how to play them.
The RNC, McCrazy campaign hired the same company that did these calls against him in 2000. They were paid 8 million.
And the surge resulted in what?
A Central Florida Republican – a Weichert Franchisee closed 7 of 23 of his offices. That was a year ago. I recon he’s closed more since then. I have not seen the fellow in a while.
Yup.
so WHY can’t this (the article, I haven’t read any comments) why can’t this be turned into a talking point for OUR side? The puglicans go after Fannie and Freddie, whose losses are chump change compared to the real problem in the overall economy. And the puglicans go after earmarks, which are chump change in the overall federal budget.
That 45-trillion dollar in the CDS market is a deceptive number. It’s analogous to adding up the values of all the insured homes and saying that there is that much money in the home-insurance market. Were there a fire that burned down all the homes in America tomorrow, that’s the amount of money that the American insurance companies would owe their policy holders. And obviously they couldn’t pay up.
Of course, insurance companies are regulated and required to maintain a certain level of reserves, but in the face of a simultaneous disaster (e.g., nuclear war) those reserves would be inadequate. By contrast, IIUC, sellers of default swaps are not regulated and have no reserve requirements.
Sistani isn’t too nuts about the agreement either:
“The draft agreement, which is intended to replace the UN security council mandate that legitimised the US-led invasion in March 2003, and subsequent occupation, follows months of fraught negotiations. It must be ratified by the Iraqi parliament before the end of the year.
Passage is far from guaranteed. Iraq’s most influential Shia cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, said last week that any pact must have the support of Iraq’s people and political parties before it could be endorsed. Some of the deal’s terms may also prove controversial in the US.”
I am hoping that Obama has saved money at the end for lawsuits related to the GOOPER attacks on voters that have started with ACORN and will proliferate as the election gets closer in time and the Rs watch their numbers continue to move south.
Bah hahahahahahaha! SNL impersonates Gayle Quinnell, you know, the crazy McCain/Palin supporter:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…..35463.html
Hysterical.
You’re right and that’s I think it’s one of the reasons the administration has maintained a low profile on this. They know that as soon as US troops pull out al-Maliki is toast.
Freeforall capitalism
the crazy McCain/Palin supporter:
This would desribe everyone planning to vote for Mcnutjob.
describe even.
I don’t think the Iraqi parliment will do a thing until after our election. As soon as the R’s are decimated on 11/4 the way will be cleared to get us out of their country. Our occupation has been a blow to them. They have completely lost control of their country and they want that control back. As long as we are there that isn’t going to happen. I would venture to guess that a deal has been struck with the incoming US president. Actually, I think two deals have been inked depending on who wins the US presidency.
Odierno is a dope, a bull in the china shop. It’s rather like Patton and Eisenhower. In a battle you might well want a Patton style general to lead but you would need an Eisenhower to run the war. Odierno is a Patton style general but he is now running our war in Iraq. That this wasn’t going to work was obvious from the start. You could almost have had a pool on when he would say or do something that would screw things up. The Iraqis not being stupid knew this too and are currently playing this like a violin.
OT Oh Oh the shit begineth
http://www.wvgazette.com/News/200810170676
Bingo!
Good point. I should have clarified by saying “one of McCain’s crazy supporters”. ;-)
At least folks are screaming about it as it occurs, rather than waiting until after the election is over.
Multiply this ‘happens every year’ shit with the number of voting machines across the country.
This is where a grassroots campaign shows its sophistication. Every person, and I mean every person, needs to be hyper-aware when voting this election. Make sure, no matter how long you have to fight with them, that your vote was your vote. Report ANY voting problems to your local elections office and get the word out that you had this problem.
We need everyone to be involved.
I have that problem trying to post golf scores on a touchscreen- the angle of the screen is part of the problem- I often end up pushing the wrong “button”.
My #118 was in reply to foothillsmike.
I’m less concerned with problems that the voter can see while voting than invisible ones that may NEVER show up.
That being said, it’s probably possible to design the screen in such a way that it encourages errors and to make the errors consistently favor one party because of the order of the candidates on the screen.
Tomorrow I will go thru poll watcher training. Every poll here in CO will
have one.
We should get a verdict on the Stevens case next week—wonder how the jury is reacting to ol “never buy me lunch” TED?
Barack Obama is asking for lots of attorneys & poll watchers to be there on election day all over this country:
http://www.lasvegassun.com/new…..-poll-wat/
I don’t blame him one bit for seeing the need for oversight, because really…he’s running against an American Taliban member!
I wish I knew how those voting machines are set-up. It occurs to me that it may be something like a linking tool used in Ad*be Acr*bat. If it is similar to that, it would be rather easy to change a vote electronically and the voter would never know.
Don’t know about that- but the Iraqis are having fun using Clusterfuck as a human political pinata- knowing that he’s out of bullets.
Some Iraqis probably find it in their interest to have us stay- but they need to play to their own politics.
That’s terrific. We need to get our people in as election judges so that the people will be confident that their voting status and votes are legitimate.
The real trick is in the counting algorithm. With just a few lines of code I can make the machine come out with any number I want. With a switch statement I could steal votes from every candidate and give them to the one I want to come out on top. Diebold had this down pat.
OT
Did everyone see that Opus is going to be no more. It makes me sad.
Yep- and that pertains to vote counting machines using paper ballots as well- but at least with paper ballots you have something to go back to in case of a recount.
I have read that poll workers can screw up a ballot by simply making a small nearly invisible mark on a blank bubble.
Yeah the political dynamic in Iraq is something that I have a hard time understanding fully. I think the fact that now there are so many new political factions in Irag, that has complicated the dynamic from hundreds of years of stability. This, of course, was a mission accomplished moment for Cheney and Bush. Instability is a sure tell of when to advance. Cheney and Bush advanced after they created the instability.
It may still work. We have to make sure it doesn’t.
This election rigging is our toughest fight IMO.
I’d like to do a diary about how easy it is to make the machine steal votes but I’m afraid I’d lose a lot of folks because I’d have to use code examples to show how it’s done. They’re easy to follow but have a tendency to glaze folks eyes over.
Blue America a couple of flights upstairs with some Ohio races to look at.
If you can prove it, write it.
Git her done! I think it isn’t as important how complex it sounds as how few steps it takes to get it done. I saw a documentary on the Sundance Channel a year or so ago that had a computer savvy guy show a middle-aged housewife and activist, step by step how to hack in and change the counters on the main computers at County election centers. Needless to say, it was eye-opening and very disturbing.
It seems to be Fannie and Freddie are given a higher standard of scrutiny fot he same reason they are generally given a higher standard of “security” as a special creature of Federal creation. You have always heard that they were regarded as “safe” under some implicit “full faith and credit” umbrella when, in the same breath, bankers/realtors/investors claimed there was no real obligation by the government to underwrite them. So what happens? That “no real obligation” becomes a reality in a pinch and now we expect these entities to behave like a goernment agency.
As a percentage of the overall problem in dollars, maybe Fannie and Freddie are disproportionally criticized; however, the impulse is there to blame them like a government asleep at the wheel too and I think that is why they are so easy to scapegoat.
