The WSJ sounds an alarm bell this morning about the horror that will befall the country if Obama is elected and the Democrats secure 60 seats in the Senate:
Though we doubt most Americans realize it, this would be one of the most profound political and ideological shifts in U.S. history. Liberals would dominate the entire government in a way they haven’t since 1965, or 1933. In other words, the election would mark the restoration of the activist government that fell out of public favor in the 1970s. If the U.S. really is entering a period of unchecked left-wing ascendancy, Americans at least ought to understand what they will be getting, especially with the media cheering it all on.
Among the anticipated affronts to human decency? A public insurance program, more business regulation and oversight, and this looming disaster:
The danger is that Democrats could cause the economic downturn to last longer than it otherwise will by enacting regulatory overkill like Sarbanes-Oxley. Something more punitive is likely as well, for instance a windfall profits tax on oil, and maybe other industries.
Oh my stars, heaven help us!
Then they’ll raise taxes on the rich, gut No Child Left Behind, put an end to Guantanamo and military commissions, enact net neutrality and Employee Free Choice, foment a "green revolution," and — no, it’s just too awful, but we must not turn away — support "free speech and voting rights!"
I know, I know. I’m grabbing for the garlic and the wooden cross myself.
Seriously, the whole thing reads like a piece from the Onion.
Word to the WSJ:
Mr. Reagan, he dead.

to the fainting couches – STAT !!!
I’m a baaad man!!
Smelling salts. Quick.
Elections have consequences. I am looking forward to the death of that failed ideology called conservatism.
cbl to WSJ:
Own Your Failures Bitchez !
Memo to the WSJ:
Name names at GS and MS and their net worth vis a vis the credit swaps/
hey twisted – you going out to see The Divine Mrs. P. this afternoon at Verizon?
I saw a Republican, crawling on the edge of a straight razor.
;>)
Snap the bipartisan olive branch and poke ‘em in the face with it.
Tie the market colapse anchor around the deregulatory free marketeers’ necks.
Let’s put Jim Martin in and Saxby out on his ass for 60 in the Senate.
The Georgia Senate race is in play.
It’s time for the adults to be in charge.
ATTAAAAACK!!!
man, the wall street journal is afraid we might undo the damage of the bush administration!
heavens!
anyway, about this quote;
looseheadprop pointed out on another thread that nixon had a pretty good universal health program proposed, I’ll try to find his proposal, it would be VERY interesting to point that out when in a discussion with a republican pundit
Healthcare, education, relief for the middle class, saner economic, environmental, and energy policies, you have to admit liberals really are pretty scary.
here ya go;
What this country needs is less of the WSJ and more of the Nation.
Who’s whining now?

For the last eight years, Bush has marched us backwards to the future, so a return to 1933 or 1965, which the WSJ fears, would actually be a huge step forward for most of us. I’d like it to happen. There’s a hilarious satire “The Depart of Homeland Decency: Decency Rules and Regulations Manual” out, available at all book stores, that has great fun with the Bush years. Its website http://www.homelanddecency.com also has some great Sarah Palin humor. What Would Sarah Do is a quiz about what she might do in her first days in office.
Got coke?

this country needs to rescind the asset redistribution of ronald reagan, it needs to start protecting our industry and jobs, it needs to bring back the self worth of this nation and put an END to the false promises of “free trade”
Agree on what we could do if in fact we get total control. As for WSJ, they are only doing what they know. Ying and Yang, got to have them both to make the whole.
WSJ RIP
OMG! HERE GOES THE REPUBLICAN PARTY!!!!!
Good Morning Jane -
did you see the WaPo Obama endorsement today ? was wondering if they chloroformed Hiatt or something
was wondering if they did it at what is considered an “early” moment for endorsements ’cause suddenly they’re concerned about their own relevance and eroding clout – nah :D
Not a chance. It’s actually about 5 min away from my house, but way too many wingnuts for me. I’m afraid that the stupid might be contagious.
I AM A WANTON LIBERALLY CHOCOLATE EATING DFH…….”g”
I hope that this election writes the epitaph for the repugs. I would like to see a new party emerge that will be a good counterbalance to the dems. I have no desire to see one party forever ensconced in power, but I do want to see the repugs gone.
Love that (figuratively, of course)!
*Visualizing scenes from Night of the Living Dead, our progressive hero cornered, back against the wall, poking sharpened stick violently at the throngs of Reaganite undead descending upon him.*
WSJ’s MarketWatch interviews Americans at FDR Memorial (2 min.)
oh,oh…sky is falling, sky is falling…GO SHOPPING,GO SHOPPING!!!! all will be well…max out your credit cards so we all can hunt partridge
amen bro
There has to be a Republic Party purge for that to happen. They must find a way to buy their souls back from the Bush family. That’s not easily done.
Only off a perfectly respectable Republican stripper’s glutes.
;>)
Order me a case of whatever the Journal is drinking.
The best that can be said for most of the current crop of DINO’s is they are centrists. How liberal can the next Congress be from the current one, given the Leadership? Also Obama may be a liberal hiding in centrists rhetoric and rightish actions but don’t bet you house on that.
There was a time when Dems and Repubs actually worked together for the good of the country. I remember it well and it was a great thing to see. They even cooperated extremely well during Watergate but SOME Repubs, the stupid ones, have never forgiven us for that and have spent all these years trying to get us for it. When sensible Repubs are elected we may fine that common ground again.
Morning Jane.
This would be funny if…
Do ya think the WSJ might get the joke if a version of the article were indeed put out by The Onion?
good dog they’re stoopid, or think everyone else is.
Hellooooooooooo mccainiac repugs. YOU broke the toys. Stop blaming the carnage on everyone but yourselves. Confess yer sins or you’ll nebber get ta’ heaven. nitwits.
Add “GOP”, and I smell a bumper sticker!
Snap the bipartisan olive branch and poke ‘em in the face with it.
Tie the market colapse anchor around the deregulatory free marketeers’ necks.

FUK YAH
Where da white women at!
On the LA Rush station, the morning guy claimed that Fox was reporting McCain polling within 2. I can’t find that on the FOx website or in any poll reporting.
WSJ now owned by self hair dying RUPERT (KKK) MURDOCH faux news baron
heeheeheehee cough splutter.
whatever.
Junior. You take that poor hapless turtle down off that post this instant!
I think that was the latest Gallup poll released this morning.
The implied message here is: Obama (the the thundering Democratic hoard)is going to take something away from you. Now, the ’something’ that the WSJ is talking about is all wound up with money. All that money that they see their ‘market’ having made over the past 8-10 years through the machinations of the GOP(an unfortunately with the stupid Congress’s help). But, what they are missing is that far more of the rest of us lost out because a lot of that money was extracted from US…and we should not forget that; nor should we forget what else got extracted in terms of the Constitution, personal privacy, voting rights, etc. along with way, nor the fact that our ‘national conversation’ now consists of ‘us’ talking to ‘us’ and ‘them’ talking to ‘them’ because of the amount of fear that has been installed into the national consciousness.
They must have something a little special in their morning coffee.
scary stuff right there
if there are any polls claiming it’s close that means they have the machines fixed already
I smell repubble panic.
WSJ been tossin’ raw compost into the wind again.
They never learn.
Conservatism: Did they say why, America, why they want to terminate my command?
America: I was sent on a classified mission, sir.
Conservatism: It’s no longer classified, is it? Did they tell you?
America: They told me that you had gone totally insane, and that your methods were unsound.
Conservatism: Are my methods unsound?
America: I don’t see any method at all, sir.
The stronger the Democratic tide the less ‘centrist’ he has to be, but no, I wouldn’t bet my house on it either.
I say it to evey Republic I catch bitching about the current state of affairs
More Ice Tea there Comrade ?
and have you progressive Ohioans figured out yet why the RNC backed off it’s most recent Court challenge on Voter Registration ???
startled reactions?
Maybe they can’t afford it. I was amazed that they dropped it though.
I wonder how many republicans live in beachfront property and have flood insurance?
It does seem way off, but as people around here know only too well, it’s the electoral college that matters most and even CNN has Obama now over the 270 threshold at 277, with McGramps trailing in every toss up state left.
CNN just had a report on “Fat Cats: Lifestyles of Wall St.” They will have more Sat. and Sun. 800pm ET. Maybe.
the more sane among them take their lumps. I reserve tea-spewers for the more doctrinaire among them . . .
“this is the balloon payment for Reaganomics !”
they no likey :D
It’s not enough that Obama wins. We must decimate the Republican party once and for all. We must make the word “Republican” impossible to utter in polite conversation.
Isn’t that just the best ! I am trying to keep cool and controlled but I feel as if I’m about to take off and fly.
possibly huff ‘n puff bluffing?
from the anger i’ve seen, and where it’s coming from, i still smell landslide for the good guys.
Betcha those rabble at Sarah’s rallies don’t vote much. just a wild guess.
As for polls, Bah Humbug. I’ll bet lotsa folk are hanging up on ‘em and looking fwd to the REAL poll.
I am glad that the R elites are so scared.
They know that a modern version of the New Deal is coming, and they know that their ill-gotten wealth is about to be spread around. Ha ha ha!
Then they’ll raise taxes on the rich, gut No Child Left Behind, put an end to Guantanamo and military commissions, enact net neutrality and Employee Free Choice, foment a “green revolution,” and — no, it’s just too awful, but we must not turn away — support “free speech and voting rights!”
Oh hell yeah!!
Was that nice?
And no, I have no idea what they’re up to.
I tend to doubt they are all of a sudden for increasing voter turnout anywhere, much less Ohio.
Slightly OT but apparently scientists have discovered a new species. “Republicanus alba trolliensis.” Characterized as generally having pasty white skin, easily frightened, blind to objective reality, uncanny ability to parrot and a tendency to follow their dominant leader off a cliff.
I think it’s money as well. although yesterday Christy commented on the Court’s ruling last time they tried it – scorching!
Todd Snider with the Conservative Christian Right Wing Republican Straight White American Male’s take on DFHs.
methinks u have lotsa company.
“Republicanus alba trolliensis.”
AKA – Republic Stenographers, parroting lies.
Even birds can do that.
fixed it for ya :D
LOL! Great post, Jane. I just fired off an email to a friend telling her how weird it is to see McSame supporters scared on a primal level and displaying proudly their basest human natures as we near November 5th. I’m glad this stupidity is displayed in the WSJ, for all of posterity……
Sad sad time in American history, that the country is choking on the policies of actual morons in power for 8 long years.
I’m delivering by hand my and Mr. siri’s early voting ballots today. I’m not trusting the mail system for this.
VOTE! to be sure. Also, send prayer and light to the Obama family as well as to his campaign. We’re in the muck and the mud now, and it’s sad as well as embarrassing!
Thank you again, Jane.
omg. that’s freaking hilarious.
how many genuine liberals are there in congress? maybe 6? on a good day maybe 12?
still, if the wsj can freak out over our bunch of semi-sane corporatists, that’s probably very good news. and funny as hell to see their panic.
mebbe repugnik polling showed the populace becoming rather cranky, specifically twd anything R. Lotta people hurting here. Not amused.
Jonathan Chait in response to the deservedly infamous WSJ Op Ed – Lucky Duckies
The WSJ quotations remind me of McCain almost screaming in the most recent debate: “Why would you want to raise anyone’s taxes? Why would you want to raise anyone’s taxes?” The answer is simple: because someone has to pay for some of this spending and soon. The ones who pay for it have to be the ones who have profited from this rigged game, the ones who can. The wealthy. Obama is right about that.
Down with the ship, parroting the same disproved nonsense as their mouths fill with water.
“Free trade, less regulation! blub, blub, gurgle….”
i’d like to see it too – might be fun to compare it to the reports we read of what clinton’s plan was going to be.
Eli is up with a new post on the front page: “Pride Goeth Before A Fall”
oops. that’s what i get for replying before i’ve read all the comments.
From their lips to God’s ears.
Heck, I’d take a good old-fashioned centrist, or even a RESPONSIBLE conservative at this point. I think I’m suffering from Neocon poisoning.
But, as to the trauma the WSJ and other wingnuts are going through, I keep hearing this wierd song over and over…(http://www.mtv.com/lyrics/martin_dean/who_s_sorry_now/8020162/lyrics.jhtml)
Little Davey Brooks just peed his jodhpurs again. How ’bout we all send him NO WHINING buttons & a “square” (a la Elaine Benis) after tonite’s session on Lehrer, assuming he hasn’t fled to the Bahamas yet.

I think I’ve seen this before. John Fund’s screams get weaker and weaker as he melts into the ground and the flying green monkies, awe-striken, begin to fall out of formation.
I’m so proud – at 5′2″ I have never been able to intimidate anyone in my whole life. To think that I have the WSJ scared is good for my ego.
What are they gonna say about him? What are they gonna say? That he was a kind man? That he was a wise man? That he had plans? That he had wisdom? Bullshit man! – Hopper
i sang that out loud, i do barely remember that tune, and am cracking up as i try to type a ty!!!!!
Thanks Jane.
digg
Let the mourning period for his myth and ideologies begin. I seriously hope the progressive left, can drive a stake into the heart of this bloodthirsty, wounded beast. For right now we’ll have to settle for putting a fork in it.
FDL rules.
This is way EPU’d, but I gotta say this: Jane you’re great! I love your turn of phrase.
Their definition of “liberal” is what would formerly be considered a “moderate” in the Nixon era. What a crock.
If only we did have a true liberal government coming into power here. All we are likely to get is neoliberal lite: a softer, gentler Friedmanite government (kind of a contradiction in terms: Friedman loved the rich, hated the non-rich).
As the Onion might have put it, “Our National Nightmare of Peace and Prosperity May Return!!!”
