I can’t believe that Joe the Plant Plumber is still dominating the headlines today, but some just won’t let it go. Michelle Malkin, that clever minx whose acute critique of the left she calls "Bush Derangement Syndrome," has now coined a new phrase — "Joe the Plumber Derangement Syndrome."
Let us pause and savor the infinite subtlety, the rapier wit.
Anyway, it seems poor Joe is somehow the victim of Barack Obama and his fiendish online minions who have snooped into every crevice of his life.
Here’s Malkin on Grahaem Frost, the 12 year-old kid she hounded relentlessly:
As for accusations that bloggers were unfairly attacking a 12-year-old, Ms. Malkin wrote on her blog, "If you don’t want questions, don’t foist these children onto the public stage."
Yet John McCain bears no responsibility for bringing the guy’s name up in the first place and repeating it over and over again in a nationally televised debate watched by 38 million people. Got it.
But why is it that political reporters only get curious when a conservative Joe America storms onto the scene? Why aren’t they just as curious when liberals trot out, say, a 12-year-old boy to give a national radio address?
It has been almost a year to the day since journalists dropped the ball on telling America more about Graeme Frost, the boy who made the case for sinking billions of dollars more into the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. But when Michelle Malkin and other curious conservative bloggers did the legwork the press wouldn’t, they earned the scorn of their mainstream colleagues.
Maybe because attacking a 12 year old kid, printing his address online and stalking his family is beneath contempt? Or because the charges made against Frost were all bullshit? Or because it’s unseemly that the Senate Minority Leader should be pushing this story and urging on such a pack of foaming, drooling, knuckle-dragging thugs, whose only goal is intimidation?
You might make the argument that it’s a shame that people have no more expectations of privacy once their names are elevated into the headlines. That is, if your name isn’t Michelle Malkin.

All Malkin and her ilk can now do is bark.
Can I call you Joe, the plumber?
Joe the
PlantPlumber? forgetaboutit. There are some real plumbers who are not too happy about all this. Tula is helping with the smackdown.
The proper term is “Joe the illegal Plumber”
Every time I think the hypocrisy of the right can’t get any worse, they prove me wrong. As soon as I read some of their whining columns, my first thought was the mugging of Grahaeme Frost, only I couldn’t remember his name.
Katymine. You here?
I got a mcsame letterman link to work. Check at my #45 downstairs.

These “illegals” should be defined as those that fail to meet requirements of skill and knowledge in their field as well as meeting minimum liability requirements. Have you ever known someone scammed by an unscrupulous contractor?
Thanks Jane.
FWIW, I just tried to digg your post and emptywheel’s latest. Had the identical problem with both. No problems until the final step, I clicked on “no duplicates,” only to receive the dreaded “fatal exception,” response.
The Republican mouthpieces must shrilly spin this because Joe, their plumber is closely related as in he is a close relative to Charles Keating of The Keating Five. The facts are killing the Republicans so they are screaming like wounded wildebeasts. They must hide the truth or instanteously combust when the sunshine hits them.
I have a rhetorical query.
Did McCain use a joke to reveal the truth about his making Joe the Plumber rich at the recent dinner that he and Obama attended?
Just a thought. I thought it odd that McCain made the random statement at the end of his third debate with Obama, ” Joe your rich.” (paraphrased by me) And at the dinner which he and Obama attended recently, McCain makes a joke about Joe the Plumber being hired by himself and his wife Cindy so now Joe is rich.
Like I said, just a thought.
Does anyone know? Is Joe the plant related in any way to the Keating family or not? I thot there were hints of indirect link yesterday. If true, intriguing! heh.
KO said last night that they’re not related. Apparently it’s a fairly common surname for that area.
FunnyDiva
there are many plumbers Joe
As I understand it Joe the illegal plumber is the son of Charles Keatings son in law. Does that make him Charles Keatings grandson or adopted grandson?
Be nice if Obama could get some real plumbers, licensed, to do an ad for him.
Joe’s in the (septic) tank for McSame.
I think the same tactics should be used on McShame that he used on Obama. Namely, “We need to know the true extent of your relationship to Joe the Plumber. We need to know if he is related to your longtime associate, Charles Keating, and whether he was a paid plant within your campaign.”
Thanks much. Seemed as if lotsa tv loonies were running far and fast with very little info. in hand. Appreciate you saving me from joining in the fray. ;->
See my number 18. Innuendo should be a two-way street. At least, it works for me! The shoe on the other foot tactic, so to speak!
Joe is (roto) rooting for McFlameout.
a lotta union folk are backing him already. don’t know about plumbers, but yeah. that’d be cool.
S’OK. We should fact-check ourselves as stringently as we fact-check everyone else. And I figure KO’s fact-checkers are some of the best in the bidness. And if it was true, he and Rachael would’ve been ALLL over it.

Digg’s acting a little squirrelly again but it looks like your digg took. Of course, I dugg your digg but it says I’m dugg but still only showing one Digg.
and away goes trouble, down the drain
((((punaise))))
Any FDL thread is better with punaise.
I know a guy (OK, me) who owns a (very) small business that happens to gross over $250k. With employees salaries, overhead, health care costs, etc., the net is well below that number, you betcha.
that was in reply to punaise @ 21
Thanks very much.
And doing so without a license
Boo!
And Jane, ya scared me a bit with that “Danny Glover” link. Forced me to check it to make sure the good Danny Glover hadn’t gone over to the darkside
Jane, you said yesterday was your last word on this clown.
thanks for that legwork, Dakine! I might’ve gone off the deep end boycotting action movies…

I’m still puzzled, though – what’s the point of a distraction like Joe (Sam) the Plumber for the McCain/Palin campaign? They are down in the polls and they need to advance the ball. Joe (Sam) is a stalling tactic, doesn’t move the McCain/Palin narrative forward, and hasn’t helped McCain/Palin at all.
Bright shiny objects serve the guy who is in the lead, not the trailing ticket. So what’s the point? Especially since, when TradMed talks about Joe (Sam) they are still talking about the economy, really.
Dumb.
I mean Joe. Not Malkin.
I’d say the McCain Campaign and the RNC are parting company.
McCain’s strategy appears to be ‘Win with Joe.’
While the RNC strategy appears to be ‘Protect with Robo-calls.’
The Dems should be able to mount an effective campaign of Binding Bush directly to the Vulnerable Republican Congress-people and Republican Senators.
If it worked to weigh-down McCain…maybe it will get US 60+ Senate Seats…
Michael Demmons has the number of Malkin and her fellow Goopers.
I dunno. I think Palin said today she didn’t want to talk about him any more. Like she has something better to talk about.
Agreed
McCain’s campaign has two approaches
Dumb and Despicable
Of the two, despicable is more effective.
They have to talk about something, I guess, and if the economy is out as a subject for them there’s not much left at this point. Have you noticed that they have not mentioned Iraq?
off the cuff
seat of the pants
McCain is reckless, my friend
And Jane, ya scared me a bit with that “Danny Glover” link. Forced me to check it to make sure the good Danny Glover hadn’t gone over to the darkside – dakine01 #32
Same here, was sitting here thinking “but didn’t Danny Glover get arrested while working with a Union rally? Hasn’t he lambasted W?” Then I checked the link and was much relieved.
I noticed that Martin Eisenstadt, the blogger/pundit/war profiteer, is in the news again as the McCain insider who broke the story connecting “Joe the plumber” to Charles Keating. I recently shot an unauthorized mini documentary on Martin Eisenstadt called “The Last Republican” that I am showing as a webseries on my youtube channel, “youkaysam”. http://www.youtube.com/user/youkaysam
At times charming and knowledgeable, Martin is, in fact, a dangerous McCain surrogate who hides behind layers and half truths that I like to believe I succeeded in identifying and exposing.
and away goes trouble, down the drain
anchors away! Palin around with secessionists: Todd-D-Bol
The point? I guess the same as having Palin, their best draw, campaign in Maine to try to peel off 1 electoral vote when the ticket is down a little bit in FL and she just drew a huge crowd.
And that’s another thing: since when do Vice Presidential candidates get to say “Oh, I don’t want to talk about that anymore!” and TradMed bows down and says, “Sorry, Your Potential Secondness, for our impertinence and lack of deference!” Huh?
Wow, did you happen to catch this post by Bonnie Erbe at CBS?
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories…..7926.shtml
From the last paragraph: “Keep watching this story because if it proves true that “Joe the Plumber” is the wealthy, Republican regular the liberal blogs are claiming he is, the McCain campaign could go down as the most corrupt and inept in history”.
My favorite talking point is that Obama’s tax plan nets out better for JTP… in the real world. In the fantasy world where he is an extremely successful small businessman, he would pay more taxes, but his chances of reaching $250,000 annual income are dwindling daily under today’s economic policy.
Since… how long has she been at this? Like 7 weeks?
“seat of the pants” has an avition origin:
maybe John has lost a bit of “feel”. Depends.
Jane
Lordamighty, the guy lists his name as “K. Daniel Glover.” Why are you calling him “Danny Glover”?
LOL
I second that LOL
I know a guy (OK, me) who owns a (very) small business that happens to gross over $250k. With employees salaries, overhead, health care costs, etc., the net is well below that number, you betcha.
I’ve been meaning to ask about that.
Is the Obama tax plan for businesses looking at gross or net?
Depends or no, he never was very successful flying by the seat of his pants, was he?
Breaking: McCain campaign to follow up on its Joe the Plumber success with more appearances featuring Senator Lieberman. These will be billed as Joe the Whiner.
net, I believe. sorry no linky.
“Don’t underestimate the capacity of Democrats to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Don’t underestimate our ability to screw it up,” Obama said. “I want everybody running scared.”
to the tune of “Traitor Joe“
Well, he was great in those “Lethal Weapon” movies with noted anti-semite, Mel Gibson.
Trump told Imus this morning he supports McCain because of his tax policy.
Geeeee, there’s a surprise.
Teh Donald has so much in common with the common man.
net, I believe.
gawd, I hope so.
thanks.
Taxes are based based on the net income, after expenses like payroll, paperclips, raw materials, etc. are deducted.
A business could have $5 million in sales or services income and end up paying no or little taxes if its expenses were $4.99 million….
or whatever else the pricey accountants [yes, they’re deductible, too] get through with their crunching.
Now I’m gonna think of that whiney jerk every time I shop at my favorite store.
Ooooh, goodie, the postal carrier just delivered our absentee ballots.
Gotta go be pro-American….
Does that mean I have to give up my three buck upchuck?
sorry about that. you may have to avoid the dairy section: Joe’s curdled.
I’ve never voted absentee. Do the ballots come with little “I Voted” stickers?
While everyone is commenting on the fact that Joe shares a last name with a Keating family member, they are not commenting on Joe’s comment, when asked about his conversation with Obama (who, I believe, gave Joe an answer that wasn’t a sound bite) said that Obama tap danced around like Sammie Davis Jr. Joe said this with a very McCain leer on his face. Got the message? This man wouldn’t vote for Obama if he was promised the plumbing contract for the White House.
thank you very much.
I was just thinking about the family business (lumber, hardware/home center). They’ll gross well over a million, but just hope like heck that the bottom line is black instead of red.
I read somewhere that it would be based on AGI (Adjusted gross income) for a sole proprietor… i.e. essentially Schedule C net profit?
Yeah, and apparently Katie thought that crack was oh-so-funny.
This Joe has a different take
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5znh58WITU8
Well, we have to check out the people they bring out and put on tv, clearly this Joe was at a campaign stop that was not of his party, why?
And after the fisaco of the Florida recounts in which Schrubs sister was bused in with other supporters to protest the recounts, well, we have a trust issue.
Joe the Plumber…Nixon had his ‘plumbers’ now McLiar is assembling his.
Joe the Plumber must be one of the ones one installing all those lead pipes in Republican houses.
Joe the Strummer plays McCain in Vain
Why does the video downstairs of Letterman and McCain say sorry no longer available?
no sticker enclosed, but I plan to hand deliver, so I’ll ask at the Auditor’s office.
I think you have to go directly to youTube to get it: just do a search for Letterman and McCain
SCOTUS Sides with Secretary of State Brunner
emptywheel on Voter Registration Case
I love taking my kids with me when I vote and I always give them the stickers. *g*
i read at a message board (great source, huh?) that it’s net. camn’t depend on that, but it says that the Obama website says net.
Adie gave the link for McCain on Letterman
to put it in basketball terms: ‘nothing but net’ makes sense.
I apologize for passing along misinformation about Joe the plumber’s being related to Charles Keating’s son-in-law. I did not realize that it was incorrect. Sorry to all firepups.
Here’s my response to Michelle Malkin
And yes, I’m virtually begging for a link or a hat tip.
