One of the reasons is that past Nobel laureats get to nominate new ones, and I think their voice carries special weight with the Committee. As a result, if Chicago economists get a few Nobels, there is a greater chance of other Chicago economists getting one, as they take care of their own.

As to the discussion above, I entirely agree. The profession has come to value ‘technical’ — read ‘mathemtical’ proficiency over insight. I had the honour of sitting next to one of the father’s of technical economists a few weeks ago — Kenneth Arrow. He agreed with me that the returns in insight to math econ had pretty much fallen close to zero by the mid 1960s. Most of what passes for economics outside the purely empirical studies is common sense dressed up in impenetrable language. As we used to say of the Chicago school: it takes first class and third-class minds, and turns them into second-class minds.

Actually in the past 18 years of the 32 people who’ve been awarded the Nobel prize in economics, 24 of them have been Americans with a good portion coming from the University of Chicago.

Not that their academic affiliation consigns them to any particular economic viewpoint.

that’s the problem with this country…the office of the presidency has been shown too much deference, especially in the past generation (well, except if you’re a republican and the president is a democrat).

McCain deserves no deference whatsoever, he’s a bought and paid for politician who panders to the most craven special interests and always puts country last.

Oooooooo, that reminds me. I got a call last night from a debt-collection agency (my bills are current) while I was out and the automated system on my answering machine asked for “Nancy Plant” (not even close to being my real name) and said if I didn’t hang up the phone after 3 seconds the agency would automatically assume I was Nancy.

WTF.

Is this a right wing plant call? I mean really, one of the trolls has my real name, address, and phone number and did post it on his blog on the front page recently, so it makes me wonder.

Did I call back? Nope! All the Plants can shove it.
