European shares have opened sharply lower following dramatic falls in Asia that saw Tokyo’s Nikkei index fall 11%.
Global falls have largely wiped out the gains earlier in the week, as fears of recession cancelled out any optimism from banking rescue packages.
In early trading, London’s FTSE 100 fell 2% while the Cac 40 in Paris and the Dax in Frankfurt both fell 3%.

Asked who “expressed his views more clearly” 66 percent said Obama, 25 percent said McCain.
“Who spent their time attacking his opponent:” 80 percent said McCain, seven percent said Obama. “Who seemed to be the stronger leader:” 56 percent for Obama, 39 percent for McCain. And who was “more likeable:” 70 percent for Obama to McCain’s 22 percent.

CNN also conducted a smaller focus group of 25 undecided likely voters in Ohio, and Obama won that too, 15-10.

Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg, meanwhile, conducted some polling before and after the debate and here are his findings.

McCain: 54 favorable / 34 unfavorable

Obama: 42 favorable / 42 unfavorable

After the debate:

McCain: 50 favorable / 48 unfavorable

Obama: 72 favorable / 22 unfavorable

Meanwhile, virtually the entire Frank Luntz focus group on Fox News, which was staged tonight in Miami, said that Barack Obama won the debate. Luntz termed it a “clear majority,” but not one person raised their hand when asked if they thought McCain won.

Said Luntz: “None had made a decision to support Sen. Obama before the debate, but more than half supported him after the debate. It was a good night for Barack Obama.”

Gail Collins watched “Three Guys and a Table” last night, and she says that in the third and final presidential debate, John McCain could not stop talking to Joe the Plumber through the TV screen. By next week, she expects Joe will have his own TV show. (As an aside, Joe was mentioned on NPR this morning. He admits that he would not face a tax increase under Obama’s plan, but he’s afraid the income ceiling might be lowered…) Mr. Cohen writes about “Presley, Palin and the Heartland.” He says the can-do, honest, spend-what-you-earn civility of the heartland — once at the heart of Republican values — has been usurped into Sarah Palin’s trash talk.

I thought the best part of the debate was the question about the supreme court.
I liked Obama’s answer about Roe V wade,but I also liked when he talked about Ledbetter and the supreme court being the last safeguard of our rights

CBS Marketwatch has a synopsis of the debate. I found this paragraph interesting.
Obama remained cool and calm while McCain was the Tasmanian Devil, spinning faster and faster as the night wore on until his arguments became a blur. By the end of the debate, McCain was muttering to himself.
Also Joe is going to be on Good Morning America.

Astonishing, but that picture, even tops this . And if Johnzilla had caught Barack, would he have given him one of these?

What I would like Obama to do today is highlight women’s health care. He also might mention that most people can’t afford to have Joe the Plumber to fix their pipes.

Joe’s on GMA and doesn’t believe in progressive taxation. Obama’s plan promotes socialistic. No endorsements, though.

I found it interesting how the CNN women’s “insta-voter meter” line would soar when Obama talked and *instantly* flatten out when McCain spoke.

My other thought: Obama’s a natural in front of the camera. McCain not so much.

Good morning everyone! I had a blast reading the comments from the Debate threads from last night. Hysterical. Isn’t it hysterical how the right wing blowhards, such as Buchanan, are still clinging to the notion that McCrazy kicks ass? I love it!

McCrazy should be ashamed of himself. I only watched half the debate before falling asleep and all I saw was an angry ole hypocritical man. I loved it when he was talking about what his supporters were saying in the audience of his rallies and how wonderful they all were and then he proceeds to bring up Ayers/Acorn in an angry way acting & implying Barack really is a bomb wearing terrorist!

Viewers weren’t impressed with McCain at all and the blowhards know it.

OT… stocks

Shares/stocks are meant to represent a small share of ownership in a corporation. If a corporation issues 10,000 shares each one represents 1/10,000 ownership. To raise money corporations sell their shares.. ie take in partners. Once they are out, they can be “traded”. The value of the stocks/shares is supposed to represent the value of the corporation, but what they really represent is some artifiial / perceived value which moves from day to day depending on “news”.

Why are people “investing” there retirement in these idiotic casino “chips”? Chips are issued by corporations which are unethical, and not acting in the interest of the people and rarely in the interest of shareholders. It’s a massive kabuki.

The cancer is dead and somewhere, somehow that I may not ever fully understand, David has ultimately won. Please keep us, keep me in your hearts. A quick point.

First, anyone you see on tv regularly makes more than $250,000/yr., so they are going to be horrified (because of course they would have to cut back on $5 buck lattes) by Obama’s tax increase for those who make more than that.

Fortunately, the 95% of people who make less than that aren’t fooled by the talking heads.
