My daughter is studying US History and I’m helping with the quizzing for tests etc. I hadn’t retained the stuff about the Bank Panic of 1837 but there are tons of parallels to today. She’s getting tired of me pounding her textbook and yelling “history is repeating itself…again!” poor thing.

My parents doing (getting me into the credit union) I was at B of A while an undergrad and they were awful, followed by Wells Fargo. Back I went to the credit union and have been blissfully happy (well as happy as one can be) ever since.

The story now is that Palin did not fire Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan for refusing to fire state trooper Mike Wooten who was involved in a messy divorce with Palin’s sister but that Monegan had sought to go to Washington to seek funds to address Alaska’s severe problems with sexual violence and rape. Why Palin would be against this is unclear. However, state records show that Monegan’s trip had, in fact, been approved by the governor’s office. The Troopergate report when it came out found that Palin had abused her authority in seeking to get Wooten fired.
2. Replaced the guy she fired in troopergate with someone with a sexual harassment complaint who lasted 10 days
3. Todd’s Alaska Independence Party connections, and her own participation
4. Used a state site to promote mining interests over clean water; and accepted several thousand dollars worth of gifts from mining lobbyists
5. Bridge to nowhere: being for it before she was against it
6. For earmarks before she was against them
7. Pumping money into a bankrupt Alaska dairy and then selling it off to cronies
8. Firing employees as mayor over loyalty issues

28. While mayor, Wasilla was the only city in Alaska which billed ($300-$1,200) rape victims and their insurance companies for rape kits and forensic examinations
29. Named Deborah Richter her campaign manager for governor to head a division which distributes dividends of Alaska’s oil royalties to its citizens. Richter had only one year of college and was a business partner of Palin in a land investment. Palin fired one of her aides John Bitney for having an affair with Richter during her (Richter’s) divorce
30. Thinks that Saddam Hussein worked with al Qaeda to attack America on 9/11

36. Supports the Ledbetter decision which makes it extremely difficult for women to sue over pay discrimination
37. Boasted of McCain’s credentials as a reformer in an interview with Katie Couric but could not name a single example of a McCain reform when asked
38. In addition to the claim that she is Commander in Chief material because she is the titular head of the Alaska National Guard she also claimed foreign policy experience because Alaska has a sea border with Russia (more than 500 miles away from Wasilla)

One hundred and ten years of U. S. imperialism in the third world, starting with the slaughter of the residents of the Philippines back in 1898… It’s funny, very few of our so-called “progressives” even want to talk about the long and vicious American aggression in the third world to steal resources and ensure serf populations following our orders. You know, I think Palin is as frighteningly incompetent as the next American, but this piece distorts what she said. She did not say Americans don’t have any actions to apologize for, she said they don’t apologize for BEING Americans. Which frankly, I don’t either. I may be embarrassed for and apologetic of my government, or even OTHER Americans who make us look bad…but I would never apologize for BEING American. Similarly, white people sure have done a lot of shitty things over the last few millenia, but I’m not going to apologize simply for BEING white.

So it was a cute premise, but I think it warps what she actually said, in order to have a little fun.

This is Very Interesting. I just saw a video clip on MSNBC of “Joe the Plumber” explaining why he wasn’t convinced by last night’s debate to support Barack Obama. Among his reasons was something about how we shouldn’t apologize for being Americans. And here’s Sarah Palin saying the same thing.

Coincidence? I think not.
