The problem isn’t how the William Ayers and Muslim accusations affect the election, but the consequences for afterwards. My parents are both retired Ivy Leauge grads in their 60’s, and are conservative Christians. My father recites these concerns and I have been trying to convince him how ridiculous they are. I can convince him rationally, but I can still see his unwillingness to allow his reason to overcome the xenophobic, emotionally based fears that have presumable been reinforced by his friends and their religious/political leaders. I am not so much worried about people like my parents, but as intelligent as they are it blows my mind that they can even entertain these things. What about the religious fundamentalists in this country who believe that our biggest threat are gays and “Islamofascists”. These people that think Obama is “Sleeper Cell”, or Terrorist? The chances of economic conditions getting MUCH worse in the next year is just short of certain. So what do you do with a bunch of irrational, starving religious extremists who blame their suffering on god punishing America for it’s sins? Not to mention that these people own a disproportionate percentage of firearms compared to the general population and there is potential for …

One of the websites you get to if you follow the trail for the “Obama/Osama difference” bumper sticker is http://www.americaagainstobama.com. There are ads there, including Washington Mutual. I just spoke to their corporate office about pulling their ads, and wrote to them as follows:

The http://www.americansagainstobama.com web site is not just a political web site, urging citizens not to vote for Barack Obama. The purpose of the site is to bait the electorate, to create division and hatred. At this time, the front page of the web site calls the Senator a Marxist, and has a video which attempts to link the Senator to terrorism by drawing attention to his past political relationship with William Ayers. This is at least as tenuous as Senator Joe McCarthy’s attempt to call Ed Murrow a communist in the ’50’s for participating in a student exchange program with the Soviet Union.

I do not think that this is the kind of web site that WaMu intends to endorse. I suspect that the advertising placement agency is acting without regard to WaMu’s best interests.

Please instruct your advertising agency to cease advertising on this and similar web sites. This nation does not need to be further divided after almost twenty years of bitter partisanship in Washington, and at a time when we stand at the brink of an economic catastrophe the like of which has not been seen in 80 years.

The person I spoke to agreed that it was not appropriate for WaMu to endorse such a site, and said he’d see that the ads got taken down.

Other advertisers include Equifax, Dell and Fossil.
