One of the reasons that the Republicans are in such trouble right now is that over the last eight years (and in some cases even more), they have had free rein to act on their most cherished beliefs… and ended up conclusively disproving them.
In fact, I’m pretty sure that the only Republican beliefs that haven’t been discredited are the ones that were abandoned (fiscal responsibility, personal liberty, that sort of thing).
So, what has the Bush administration taught us?
o Tax cuts for the rich do not trickle down to everyone else, nor stimulate the economy, nor increase tax revenue.
o Unfettered free trade does not lead to jobs and prosperity.
o The free market is not a substitute for regulation and oversight.
o Pre-emptive war is not cheap or easy, and does not make the world safer, more stable, or more democratic.
o A weak, ineffectual bureaucracy is not a good thing. Nor is an all-powerful executive.
o The "family values" party is kinkier than early John Waters and more sadistic than the Marquis himself.
o The "support our troops" party votes against troops and veterans every time.
o The "law and order" party believes the law exists only to protect their friends and smite their enemies.
o The "party of Lincoln" hates and fears black and brown people. Also gays, women, Muslims, and atheists.
o "Voter fraud" is a hoax. Vote suppression isn’t.
o "Compassionate conservative" is an oxymoron.
I’m sure I’ve missed a whole bunch; please feel free to chime in with more examples.
(Yes, I know the video isn’t entirely appropriate because it confirms the myth it was supposed to bust, but it was just so perfect…)

Voter registration fraud is also a myth.
That video is hilarious
hey Eli, you sir, have been on fire of late. most excellent list
of course they never bothered to explain what happened with the whole No Nationbuilding !!! thingy
Values . . .Live The Fantasy !
Is it raining there?
nope. stopped around 7:40
Good Dog! Isn’t that enough?
Seriously, Eli, the ones you describe certainly deserve to be topping the list.
Does the elephant know that it has very big feet, has lotsa mass, and isn’t agile? Does it also know that if the mouse scampered in the wrong direction (namely, towards the elephant) that it could be squashed? Does it care? Does it have a heart? I’ve been known to brake the car to let a butterfly cross the road; something like that?
Too bad the Republican elephant doesn’t seem to have the real elephant’s awareness and sensitivity to the damage it could cause the “little people” and comparable reluctance to inflict harm.
A great post that should go viral!
Thanks Eli.
Great list to fwd on to others, with your kind permission.
Hilarious video. Mouse effect aside. I don’t understand how they got the elephants to be so cooperative. They looked agitated and in a bit of a hurry to move on through. Those myth-busters are too brave, but oh so entertaining.
“The United States does
nottorture.”“We have to fight them over there so we don’t have to fight them here” only makes more enemies determined to attack us here.
OT
Paulson is going to be interviewed by Larry Kudlow on cnbc tonight. Bwahahahahaha.
Or perhaps that’s not OT. Another myth is that R economic experts are knowledge when they are actually total fools.
Just in for lunch & to recharge my iPod. BBL
Government can’t function if you fill Federal jobs with people of faith and no ability.
Iraq is all about democracy an freedom
That FDR was right: the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.
Try as they might, the GOP elephants apparently can’t help but start with fear as their basic reaction — never mind that their fears are often baseless and feed the very problem we’re trying to deal with.
I thought it was very appropriate. An elephant who turns in fear from tiny little mice?
Mythbusters rule!
– Bad idea to decide who to vote for based on who you’d rather get shitfaced with.
– Oftentimes elite means well educated means open minded means competent.
What? Toe-tapping in toilet stalls and wearing diapers at the local brothel aren’t normal family activities? Why, who could have anticipated such a thing?
Thanks, everyone! Yes, please feel free to forward all you like.
“Deficits don’t matter.” – Cheney to former Secretary of the Treasury Paul O’Neill is another falsehood – since roundly disproved.
I think they also proved that folks who think government is the problem will go out of their way to prove it.
BushCo that is.
bom dia pups
great post, Eli! I needed a chuckle this morning
o Tax cuts for the rich do not trickle down to everyone else,
well *something* has been trickling down on me…..
“States Rights:” Federal government stays out of state issues.
Completely violated by the Republicans everytime, see same sex marriage.
The bushies taught us lessons we should have learned from Nixon, Reagan and Bush Sr. I for one am tired of this lesson having to be taught every decade or so. Could we please put these failed administrations and the “lessons” they have taught us in school books so our children will be better educated than we seem to be?
fiscal conservative is an oxymoron
“So, what has the Bush administration taught us?”
That Republicans have NO sense of humor. Remember the “Half Hour Comedy Hour?” Veritable laff riot.
Seriously, is there a blogger on the right that could hold a candle to Tbogg, the General, Wolcott, the Rude One, or our very own Blue Texan?
Hey Eli. Haven’t read the local shit rag yet but I doubt you’ll get in BlogWatch 2 days in a row. I think Caylee’s mom getting idicted may bump the editorial and op-ed pages as well as the Sports section and whatever other sections they have (certainly there’s no real estate section any more) Maybe there will be a collectors edition. But keep doin’ you thing and I’m sure you’ll be back.
Outsourcing government work to private contractors has disasterous results.
I doubt we have the bandwidth to even start on “personal responsibility”
— Income tax cuts do not produce higher income tax revenues.
good one. forgot about that.
Also, “A woman, any woman on the ticket, is a winning idea.” (also)
Well, we know that Republicans never make mistakes, only that “mistakes were made.”
I have to post this wonderful quote from Richard Dreyfus at the ‘W’ premiere regarding Bush:
Blame the problems we created on minorities, immigrants, all brown people
Unless, of course, you’re a contractor.
The time is right to introduce some progressive philosophies to replace the old, discredited right wing blather. Opportunity!
Republican Party is also an oxymoron.
Government shrunk down to a size so small it can crawl inside a uterus !
Heh. Thanks, but I think I’ll be okay…
o “Trickle-down ecconomics, has the odor of urine”.
All I want to do is shrink the Republican Party down to where it can be drowned in the bathtub…
And as president W is going to be a uniter not a divider
OT: Nate Silver (fivethirtyeight.com) now says it’s 95.8% likely that Obama will win.
He has also moved Al Franken’s race (MN) over to the “leaning-Democratic” column. He now gives the Dems a 90% chance of a 55-seat majority, a 50% chance of a 58-seat majority, and a 30% chance of a 60-seat majority.
Great Post!
That list should be forwarded to every Democratic office holder in the country, so it can serve as ready-made talking points vs. GOP lies.
Sorta like garlic vs. vampires.
Every vote should be counted
They’ve been trickling on us for 28 years now.
Or receiving gifts from contractors
o Dumb fucks don’t make good presidents.
If you want an indication that the McCain camp has conceded…
Joe six pack makes for a good president
Golden showers, only the little guys underneath aren’t getting any pleasure from it, just wet and stinky. Sorry for the image.
o Vice Presidential selection committees should not select themselves for the post.
Cheney’s back in the hospital for a heart procedure. I wish no ill will on the VP, but the timing of an old white guy going into the hospital could not be better for McCain on the eve of the debate.
Myth No. 563:
Everybody has health insurance, just go to the emergency room! It’s free!
The myth of “trickle down” (”piss down”, more accurately) is NOT yet disproved to those that matter: Congress idiots.
Schumer himself is spouting variations of piss down economics. The bailout itself is piss down in concept.
What we actually need is for the Dem leadership, or better the new TRUE Dems that we’ve been putting in place, to come out and SAY “piss down economics does NOT work. That is unequivocal fact. It is time for trickle UP economics.” Then they need bill after bill, regulation after regulation, passed that puts that statement of fact into actual practice.
Good one!
The rich, however, really get off on it.
With or without a “filibuster proof majority” the Dems need to take a page directly from the GOP playbook with the new congress. They need to wield the “nuclear option” often. They should actually even USE that option from time to time to kill GOP blocking moves.
Don’t know whether that was snark or not but I don’t think Cheney in the hospital is good for McC. It reminds people that some who have physical problems should not be in positions of power.
have to admit that was my health insurance for a while
You’re doin a heck of a job Browney
We will rebuild New Orleans
Definitely not good for Gramps…although I would argue that physical problems are less of an issue than medical history problems.
Cheney: 4 heart attacks.
McCain: 4 skin cancers removed.
What do Regan and Schrub have in common?
They both ruined the economy of a nation.
Unlikely mythbuster Patrick J. Buchanan over at Antiwar dot com says we can “Liquidate our Empire.” The ultimate myth: we can’t cut defense spending.
Pat Buchanan may be a racist loon, but he’s no neocon. Although he’s more isolationist than pacifist.
Michael Schiavo has done an ad urging Floridians to vote No on Amendment 2 on November’s ballot. Amendment 2 is the anti-gay Constitutional amendment being put forward by the same control freaks who interfered with the Schiavo family’s life.
Education is a right
*yeah, right*
I’ve known frat boys like George. I do not drink with these guys. In fact, I have noticed that when I am in the same room with them for too long, I begin to get this (almost) uncontrollable urge to punch them in the face.
This has caused me some unfortunate problems in the past. I’m younger now, I was older then. And as much as I hate to admit it, I can personally attest to the fact that not all of them are wimps.
Excellent list.
i think of it like Jack Nicholson’s disappearing scene in The Witches of Eastwick.
hey, Eli.
o Up is Down; Black is White; West is East; Wrong is Right; ….
Our president is joe six pack, after rehab…

The US military has said they’ve killed the No. 2 dude of al-Qa’ida in Irak. Again. They keep killing the No 2 dude they’re never gonna get to the No 1 or No 3 dudes.
They can only count to 2.
Every time they say that I am ROFL – they sound like Baghdad Bob.
I’m not in favor of “unfettered free trade”, but that’s not what we have under the current NAFTA/GATT/WTO system either. The trade agreements run to thousands of pages, and are full of tricks and gotchas inserted by corporate lawyers, generally to skew the rules in favor of business interests in the developed countries. The general principle seemed to be that capital would be unrestricted in its ability to seek the best return on investment.
Poor countries are restricted in their ability to impose tariffs, but rich countries are not restricted in their ability to subsidize agriculture. Result: Mexican agriculture collapsed, and millions of displaced workers headed north. But since capital crosses borders freely and labor does not, all those displaced workers are “illegal”, which means that they can be paid dirt and can’t complain, which further means that “legal” workers competing with them see their wages go down.
Likewise, the world was required to accept trade restrictions in the form of draconian patent and copyright agreements. The USA ignored foreign patents and copyrights up until about 1890, and built its industrial base on “stolen” British and other European inventions. These rules mean that any country that is behind will be behind forever.
New Rushbo myth-hot off the stinking neo-con radio lie machine.
Bill Ayers wrote Obama’s books. The proof is that both Ayers and Obama use “nautical references”. Limbaugh is insane.
Number 3 dudes keep getting promoted
Steven Rosenfeld has a new post from Oxdown to the front page of the mothership: “California GOP had Same Voter Registration Problems as ACORN in 2006”
OT, but MSNBC is reporting that Nancy Reagan is in the hospital with a broken hip. Seems to be just a hairline fracture, though.
The repubs have always opposed the burden of the federal presence, likening it to Big Brother. “Get gumint off our backs!” They do this to scale down taxes and regulation, and play it to the rubes as intrusion onto their sacred privacy, like with an imperial presidency and wiretapping and prison forever without habeas corpus and stuff.
They have winked and nodded to racist extremism by throwing up their hands, claiming States’ Rights as their mantra. (In ‘04 the veep debates, B-movie monster Lon Cheney, when confronted about the conflict between his party homophobic platform and his own immediate family, shrugged, shipped it over to States’ Rights.) They thus endear themselves to Magoon’s last constituency, lynch mobs. This platform of course is subject to what they call “situation ethics”: you can violate the rights of minorities and other undesirables but you cannot insist on higher environmental standards than the polluters who run the repubs would like and you can’t have medicinal marijuana.
They oppose stem cell research while their candidates are both androids.
Democrats want to redistribute wealth; Rethugs do not.
Very rarely does anyone tell them that Rethugs also redistribute wealth, but they want to redistribute wealth up to the already wealthy on the backs of the middle class.
What else has the Bush Administration taught us?
Here’s a myth: George W. Bush was anointed by God to lead the United States.

Republican promises are just the event horizons around their moral black holes.
Real Elephants are large, bad tempered, protective of their own, dangerous, damage their own environment and throw their weight around. They don’t like non-elephants.
Just like republicans.
He succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. The democrats are more united that they have ever been.
