Some of the most hotly contested congressional races are turning towards Democrats. One of the most important races for progressives in the country, in the suburbs east and south of Seattle (WA-08) pits progressive leader Darcy Burner against a pathetic and corrupt rubber stamp Bush puppet, Dave Reichert. Darcy took him apart in a debate last week and the newest polling shows her beating him by a healthy 5 point margin despite all the corporate and right-wing money pouring into the district on his behalf. One Darcy Burner is worth ten generic, nominal Democrats from the Republican wing of the Democratic Party.
Also up in polling today, two fine New Jersey Democrats, Linda Stender and John Adler. And the DCCC Red to Blue program has announced they are widening the playing field– by a lot. They’ve added two of our favorite Blue America candidates, Larry Joe Doherty (TX-10) and Dennis Shulman (NJ-05), both fighting vulnerable rubber stamp Republicans, Michael McCaul and Scott Garrett. Two weeks ago we met a solid Alabama Democrat here at FDL, Josh Segall (AL-03), and they added him too– as well 5 other Democrats who have seen their opponents hopes for re-election fading: Linda Ketner (SC-01), Jim Harlan (LA-01), Becky Greenwald (IA-04), Nick Leibham (CA-50), whose powerful new ad you can watch here, and Elwyn Tinklenberg (MN-06).
They also slotted in 5 new candidates into the Emerging Races list: Julie Bornstein (CA-45), Bill Durston (CA-03), Rob Hubler (IA-05), Bill Mitchell (FL-09), and Georgianna Oliver (OK-01). It’s a mixed batch of really bad Democrats who won’t support the most crucial Democratic principles and values to absolutely outstanding progressive leaders like Bill Durston. Obviously, we urge you to donate to progressives at the Blue America ActBlue page. And you can help Bill Durston here.
Everyone at Blue America is extraordinarily proud of our friend Dennis Shulman, this year’s embodiment of the Obama slogan, "Yes, we can." When I called to congratulate him on behalf of the thousands of donors who have contributed to his campaign through Blue America, he emphasized that the addition to Red to Blue is welcome on top of the New Jersey grassroots support that has been building for his candidacy. Dennis (it’s why we love him):
"Our grassroots campaign for change has been growing so rapidly in Northern New Jersey, and we welcome the additional support.
Why have people throughout the district, from school teachers and retired truck drivers to hardworking mothers of seven, dedicated their time and their $10 and $15 checks to this campaign? For the same reason the national netroots have been so supportive– we have been speaking the truth about the key issues of the day, and taking the fight to Scott Garrett, who is ridiculously out of touch on the issues and corrupt to boot.
The hardworking families of New Jersey pay their taxes fully– shouldn’t Scott Garrett pay his too? Voters are sick and tired of having a member of Congress who believes that "representing them" means putting the special interests in charge of his office. After November 4th, we will provide the district and country the change we need to get our economy moving again."

Awesome news!
Dennis is great – we got to meet him at the convention.
Yes We Can!
Met Darcy Burner at Netroots Nation. One terrific candidate. How’s she dealing with the fire in her house? Hope insurance claims went OK and that she has moved back in.
I can feel it, a Republican Wipeout
It makes me nervous to get too happy about Republics being decimated in 2008. McCain still has time for an “October Suprise”. I’m sure there are many people assigned to creating one, real or fake.
Got a speeding ticket once listening to that on the car radio
Saw them live in the ’90s. We even met them.
Thank you, Howie. You’re tireless work is essential.
And Go Dennis!
One dark spot is Mahoney in FL. Surprised the Rs haven’t made more out of this. Perhaps they have in FL.

They added Linda Ketner?!?! Wow – that is optimistic and exciting. Her opponent, Henry Brown, is a do-nothing dumbass of the genial buffoon variety so common in South Carolina politics. However, Linda Ketner is hardly the type of candidate to unseat him in SC (she has my vote, of course) — an “unmarried woman” (read: lesbian) with no political pedigree to speak of (she’s a successful business woman). She is getting some good play off of a “scandal” involving Brown’s inappropriate and typically scofflaw behavior related to Brown’s burning scrub on his property on a “no-burn” day and causing an expensive fire in adjacent woodlands (and then, of course, refusing to pay the fine!). But I am excited to learn that she may be getting some broader support as well. Who’da thunk?
It is on CNN now
I think Feeney (R)(FL-My District) is in trouble too.
Thought it was probably a matter of time.
That’s what they get for electing a Blue Dog. Mahoney was never really a Democrat.
Howie, I want to give a big “thanks” to YOU. You’ve brought these candidates to our attention, so we could shower them with our bucks [however meager individually, but together pretty damn good], and your attention has caused the Big Wigs in the party to at last discover them.
Thanks for YOUR efforts and for all you’ve done for all of us.
Didn’t know that but now the whole party franchise takes a hit.
That is what it looks like

If Obama maintains or grows his lead, hopefully more Liberals will focus their time and money on these Blue America races. And it would be nice for Obama to campaign with some of those Dems who are in close races, even if those states aren’t needed for an Obama win. Will help for the future also.
This first song of many budding rock stars!!
The good news is that in the event that McPalin “win”…they will end up in a stalemate with Congress while in office and will be unable to wreak as much havoc as Bushco has been able to.
Don’t want to add to your things to worry about but at the Palin rally today (via TPM)
sigh. I weep for this country
actually I found this scandal rather “quaint”. which politico can’t relate to a guy dealing with the messiness of an ex mistress? It won’t fly on cable TV news because it seems so garden variety as far as scandals go. where are the salacious details of diapers, bathroom stalls, emails to underage pages and/or nazi overtones?
and….did anyone admonish him?
didn’t think so.
Good points. Hopefully that’s the way it will play. But then the Rs made a BJ seem like an existential threat.
Oh. I stand corrected! :]
Krugman on CNBC. That must be a first.
I’d love to be able to do something about Mike Arcuri for the same reason, but not this time, I’m afraid.
Hmmm. Can’t get bradblog to load.
We just had the mother of all October Surprises, the financial meltdown. Everyone blamed the Republicans and McCain looked transparently opportunistic trying to convince people he was a leader.
The same thing will happen if they gin up some threat or military situation. Bush is at record levels of disapproval, and every time he reminds voters he exists, it’s bad for Republicans all over. If something “happens,” Bush will have to be all over the teevee or look like a failed leader (like during the financial crisis).
For an October Surprise to succeed, there has to be a basic level of trust so that the reaction is “rally-round-the-flag,” not “oh, god, why couldn’t this have waited three months?” Republicans don’t have that any more.
No and as a warning, don’t go read about it on politico. the comments will take your breath away they are so filled with hate
that was for dosido @ 23
A good Toles

True. Bush ruined so many things for the rethugs. I mean, we now know that the BJ revolution was led by Diaper Dave. Kinda takes the wind out of their sails.
Oh, think of the kids!
wailing, gnashing of teeth, renting of garments.
Are you implying that the Ds caused the financial meltdown? *g*
If they had an October surprise they would have used it in September when the campaign imploded. They’re way too late now. Even George what’s-his-name from This Week says no candidate has every recovered from being as far down as McC is now.
they should just send the KKK VP back to Alaska so she can face her own music.
good point. but how reassuring to know that our protection is assured by their lack of credibility! not.
I am seeing the DOW down 265
i just finished filling out my ballot. dropping it off this afternoon. I can’t wait until this vile election cycle is over. She is now tying Obama to ACORN as though either are bad. Karma will visit her and it will not be kind.
I think they shot their wad when they got Georgia to invade Osetia
Yep. It’s not over yet.
Drive-by, while waiting for Ms.D to get out of surgery:
W is nothing if not a gambler, blithely unconcerned with what other people think. I think there is still time for an October Surprise-it would be bombing Iran around the 29th, during new moon. Give McCain his war, and put the Dems in the “support the troops” box, which they have yet to figure out how to counter.
It may be the only card they have left to play-but I would never bet that W won’t double down, as opposed to folding.
What could they have been thinking. That was one of the most boneheaded moves I’ve ever seen. Thought Russia played it very cool, or at least that’s the way it seems right now.
I want to mail mine too but I am still making up my slow little mind on some of the props…
guy for ACORN on MSNBC now.
MSM played down/ignored the findings that Georgia started it
Scott Levenson of ACORN debunking mccain crap on shuster’s show.
Aren’t the props just awful this time ! I wish the lege would just govern instead of being so cowardly.
Guy on CNN is tying Palins into AIP
Don’t you just love it when facts come out!
Acorn rep did a really good job.
Flipped too late. Can you elaborate? Did the report pack a punch or was it downplayed.
Coming up after break
MSM has picked up the “erratic” meme.
Niewert’s on CNN.
David Neiwart on
I hope November 2 *is* a tsunami and not a tidal bore
New Christy upstairs
CNN is really digging into the AIP story. Wonder how that happened. Does Niewert have connections?
So far a pretty thorough expose – yea
I’ve seen Dave’s name at C&L. Did I miss some sort of announcement? Are things cool?
Can I just ask that you mention who you think “bad Dems” are when you make a statement like this? I happen to know Rob Hubler, and he is an outstanding progressive in a tough race against one of the most bigoted ignorant wingnuts in Congress, Steve King. It is not fair to lump him in with unnamed bad Democrats and leave the implication that he might be one of them. If you would help him, that would be great. But don’t hurt him, for heaven’s sake. He doesn’t deserve it.
Seconded.
I know Bill Durston from having worked on his 2006 campaign, and there are not enough words in the English language to describe what a wonderful, inspiring person he is. We’d all be a lot better off with leaders like him. His opponent, on the other hand, is the lowest of slime. They are dead-even in the polls, despite the fact that CA-03 (my parents’ district) was ridiculously gerrymandered to benefit the Republicans.
If you can help Bill out at all, please do. He’s been able to do TV ads this year, and they’ve helped immeasurably. Also, he and his volunteers have done a massive voter registration drive, which is bringing in a lot of young voters. (Of course, when my father was out registering people the other day, a woman came up to him and said, “you shouldn’t even be here.” Another guy said, “get out of my way, I’m a Republican.” There is no room for any ideological differences as far as those creeps are concerned.)
It was…to them. They barely pushed W in as it was. Could you imagine how difficult it would have been if Clinton hadn’t been muddied? Gore would have won in a walk — as he should have anyway.
