In the last few weeks, Senator McCain and Governor Palin, rhetoric at your campaign events has taken an increasingly dangerous tone that seems to ignore the precarious state of our progress when it comes to race and ethnicity.
Supporters at your rallies and other events have used hateful language and called for violence against Sen. Obama yelling "kill him!" "off with his head!" and "bomb Obama."
For the most part, you have stood by in silence. In addition, you have also repeatedly made statements that somehow connect Senator Obama with terrorism. Your surrogates have emphasized his middle name. This is problematic and dangerous, and we believe helps create the conditions that have given rise to these incidents of violent rhetoric from some of your supporters.
Today, we’re standing together as Americans of all political persuasions to express our deep concern that the decisions of your campaign are contributing to a dangerous atmosphere of paranoia, division, and hate that, as we have already seen, has the potential to seriously harm our country and its progress.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."
In these trying times, candidates seeking the highest offices in the land must call on the best in each of us, and call off the worst.
Tell McCain/Palin to call off the dog whistles – add your voice here. It’s time for more than a change. It’s time for the better angels of our nature to take a stand against this sort of divisive nastiness once and for all.

Done.
There was a “bodacious babes for Obama” fund raiser around the corner Saturday and a sign on the fence said “somewhere in Alaska a village is missong their idiot”. That resulted in a scathing letter to the editor in the paper today about “Democratic Hate Speech”.
Done, too.
Charlie Daniels is divisive!
I tell ya, the wingnuts are losin’ it. I’ve read one guy who said “there are peopel who will take up arms against socialism,” which is pretty funny since it was Clusterfuck and his cronies who wanted the “bailout.”
Yet guys like Charlie rail against that too, even though it’s HIS PEOPLE, the ones he advocates his fans all vote for, who are the ones railroading the damn thing through.
hmmm being called an idiot or threats on your life. hmmm no compariosn.
Stalkers for McCain/Palin – twelfth of never.
Digg this urgent post
Lynch mobs for McCain/Palin.
done, Christy. thanks for the post and the link
McCain consorts with known criminals Charles Keating, G. Gordon Liddy, and George W. Bush.
aww hell the goobernator is on my teevee to declare a state of emergency. I see the mayor of LA is there too *SPIT*
Truth is a defense.
How come no one is talking about McCain and Liddy? talk abut terrorist
We are witnessing the far right in a state of simultaneous acceptance and denial all wrapped in a flag, a bible and a white sheet.
Let’s not forget that these wingnuts, it they revert to McVeigh form, will be reigniting the post 9/11 comity among all decent Americans.
It will be their death knell.
Let’s hope they are caught doing what they want to do.
-GSD
Elizabeth Dole is a terrorist?
-G
Signed. Glad this is being done. Don’t expect McC to change but hope that at least Rs will put pressure on him to stop this race-baiting. It’s disgusting.
These are folks who think Bush is doing a great job.
agreed. People like that send a chill up my spine. If it were up to people like them, I would have never been born.
“Terrorist” is a huge word. What is it? Isn’t it terror when a campaign incites a crowd toward violence. The McCain Campaign is on the edge of a cliff. They are giving permission to the nutcases, the racists and wackos by nurturing the seed they have planted. This alone, is enough not to vote for them.
dugg – and I want to know why it is that the updated diggs are not showing up here at the front page.
Yeah she is married to Bob Dole who has terrorized many a people with hos viagra commercials
that was to Greg @ 14
I really want this story to go away. McCain has succeeded in changing the subject, but it’s one we don’t need on top of everything else.
I wish people would really shout about the fact that people are angry and McCain is abusing them. Just pouring gasoline on the fire instead of calling the fire dept. And he picked a scary arsonist as his VP.
Pretty ghoulish and childish, and destructive.
Frankly, the more they pour on the hate speech, the less legitimacy they have in the eyes of the average voter. Frankly, I don’t mind their sliming, especially if it isn’t working. I would LOVE to see the end of the Republican form of hate-campaigning, but I’m afraid the only thing to consign it to the rubbish heap would be if it got a reputation for ineffectiveness.
One thing I DID do, though, was call my Senator’s office and ask that he take immediate, emphatic proactive steps with the Secret Service to make double-damn sure Obama has the highest grade of protection there is.
The staff assistant I spoke to started to say, “Oh, I’m sure they’re doing everything they can.” To which I replied, “Once upon a time I would have agreed with you on that. But look, it’s the BUSH administration.” He got the point and hopefully passed on my comment.
If McCain/Palin stopped slinging mud, they would have to completely shutdown their campaign. They have nothing left.
I could only watch a portion of that video. This is not my America or maybe it’s just the sleazy underbelly that stays hidden until they are given a chance to vent. This must never happen again in our country. It’s too dangerous and ugly.
Why would McPalin stop the divisiveness? That’s who and what Republicans are. There base is hate filled and fearful. The negative campaigning can chip away at Obama raising his negatives. One has to remember that the “average” American isn’t particularly sophisticated or enlightened. They have the memory of gnats. With the economy showing signs of stabilizing I expect McCain to begin climbing in the polls. Looks the NYT did a front page fluff piece for McSame.
Thanks, Christy, I signed the petition. For those of you who missed it, here is an Oxdown diary with a letter I faxed to McCain’s Washington office last Friday. I think that the fact that voting and campaigning for office are Federally protected activities needs more attention.
LOL!!
Agree. I’ve been saying that for years and years. I guess it took until the reductio ad absurdum to make it apparent to more people.
Carl Bernstein at Huffpo:
poo flingers.
I’d say so. What will be the spin from el rushbo?
oh for a minute there I was thinking he was in the enzyte commercials.
Now McCain is hinting that he’s going to bring up Ayers in the last debate. What a dumbass. He was ready for it the last two times, you plane-crashing doofus. You shouldn’t telegraph your moves.
If he doesn’t bring it up this time, Adny McCarthy’s head may explode over at The Corner. I know, not exactly shocking…
…that he’s “rehabilitated”.
But now he has to bring it up because Obama called him out. Obama’s asking for it.
Just like an abuser to blame the other person for their abuse.
lol. I love the enzyte commercials. kitzchy and funny.
Republican BS is really getting out of control. Last night my kids repeated something they heard at school, that Obama will kill all the babies if he gets elected.
Of course they can’t vote, but they’ve been huge Obama supporters, because their parents are, but last night they were starting to believe that ridiculous lie because they heard it from so many other kids on the bus and at school.
Its disgusting what all this Republican slime is doing to America!
I’m still waiting for some level of outrage toward the actual violence being perpetrated in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia at the hands of the GWB administration that is at least comparable to this towards the McCain campaign, 5+ years later (longer than WW2).
Friday of last week (Oct. 10th) I called McCain’s office in Arizona and spoke to one of his staffers and asked if McCain condones the hate speech yelled out at his campaign rallies.
His staffer said what I expected, which was, “Of course he doesn’t condone it”
So I asked for him to give me a specific example of where and when McCain said he’s against it.
He couldn’t and wouldn’t cite me one single source so I pressed him, saying that McCain then MUST condone the hate speech because I have yet to hear him say one thing to the media or stop in the middle of one of his campaign speeches to renounce the horrible things yelled out from the crowd. (This was before I’d gotten home and watched COUNTDOWN and seen McCain take the mic away from the woman that called Obama an Arab)
So the staffer then said – “Well, it’s common sense.” So I said it’s not just common sense and that I’d really like for him to cite one single instance, direct me to one specific place where I can read McCain’s quote against the hate speech. The staffer said, “I’ll be sure to pass your message on to the Senator.” and I said, “Yes, I’m sure you will”
I also called Harry Reid’s office asking his staffer to please have Senator Reid come out against the fear-mongering and hate-speech and she politely said she didn’t know at this time if Sen. Reid had anything prepared but she would gladly pass on the message and the concern.
So, aside from signing the petition that Christy linked to in this great post -
What if we all got together and started calling McCain’s campaign office or even his senate offices and asked “Does Senator McCain condone the remarks of people attending his campaign rallies when they yell out that Senator Obama is a terrorist or that he should be killed?”
I’m assuming the person on the other end of the phone would say “Of course not!”
And then we could say, “Well they must because neither he nor Gov. Palin (with the exception of ONCE this past Friday) renounce such remarks/behavior so they MUST condone it.”

It would be great if everyone could take a few minutes of their busy day to do this – I am sincerely fearful of the worst and would hate to have something bad happen and done not even the smallest thing I could to stop it.
Thanks everyone for your time in reading my rather long comment.
The GOP needs to change its symbol to a guy in a white sheet and hood, with a big KKK on the sheet.
Do they make sheets big enough for elephants
One of the things about this which I find very upsetting is – this is actually more of the same from the last 8 years, the whole “if you aren’t like us, don’t believe like us, don’t look like us, etc., then you are the enemy.” This has set us all up to live in this state where we don’t want to talk to our neighbors; we don’t want to put signs on our lawns; we don’t want to exchange ideas..because then ‘they’ will know what we believe and then we have something to be afraid of. How are we going to pull ourselves together into a “united” states of America? Even after the election is over, no matter who gets elected…I see this as a huge problem.
OMG! That is *too* hysterical. One begins to wonder whether being born without a funny bone automatically insures the person will become a thug. Thanks a bunch for the big belly laugh.
Nah, they gave up on elephants. Elephants have brains they use so that leaves them out of the mix.
Are you o.k. wobbly? The air around LA must be absolutely awful(?) Or, are the high winds continuing?
Stay safe.
Sorry, that one doesn’t fly. Telling someone to “put up or shut up” about insinuations is not blaming an abuser for their abuse. McCain doesn’t get to send Palin out time and again to make insinuations without any shred of real proof — or any connection to reality, since GOP darlings Walter and Leonora Annenberg gave Ayers $50 million dollars for his education work, and McCain just welcomed an endorsement from them — without being called on it.
i think mccain is going to lose his temper over this at the debate
I think that we need to demonize hate
thanks Adie. We’re not in the path of the fire but as you said, the air quality is awful.
Raven, you’re absolutely
incorrigable incorigeable incorregibleoh heyell, TERRIFIC!
;->
that would make the annenbergs terrorist: they did fund ayers work (albeit decades later)
There was an interview on cnn?msnbc this morning with an AA lady who said she wasn’t willing to say who she was voting for because she had heard someone had gotten shot after doing so. *That’s* what this country has become. :-(
We may very well see the temper tantrum we’ve been waiting for if he decides to get nasty with Obama during the debate. I think Obama will have no problem showing McSFB for what he really is and be perfectly calm and respectful in the process. At that point, I think, McSFB will go ballistic.
I’ve probably mentioned this before, but I have a good friend who’s father is a survivor of Dachau. She tells me that whenever he watches the news he says things like, “I’ve seen this before.” Or “they did this in Germany.”
He is truly frightened about what’s going on in America right now, and he knows what he’s talking about.
And just FYI, he’s not Jewish, he wound up in a concentration camp because he was in art school. (For those who think you’re safe if your middle name isn’t Hussein or something)
(((wobblybits))) and all our CA puppies.
Any word from demi?
Yes ITA Christy. I should have put the first line of my comment in quotes. or an /s afterwards. I was lamely attempting to quote McCain’s line of thinking with my conclusion about such thinking. that McCain is abusive.
He did the same thing when confronted with his untrue ads. “If Obama had agreed to townhall debates, we wouldn’t have to go negative” ergo it’s Obama’s fault I’m going negative.
Anyway.
That would be kinda fun. But I think he’s going to lie about it like he did with his excuse about his “Bomb Iran” ditty. That it was shared only with a buddy privately…sheesh.
Yeah, from petro a few threads back:
Damn, why didn’t I just jump on FB and see what I get back.
This type of Republican campaigning tactics goes all the way back to Richard Nixon’s first congressional campaign against Jerry Vorhis in California. Never talk about issues but attack your opponent on character issues. Nixon accused his first two opponents for congressional office as being “pinkos”. Todays Republicans now have refined these tactics and today have high powered PR/advertising firms and a corrupt and complicit media in their back pockets.
Thanks for that. Much appreciated.
Thanks Adie. I live in NoCal and there was a fire on Angel Island of all places.
I was visited yesterday by our insurance company. The guy was going door to door checking for the fire safety of all of Allstate’s customers in our town (a large suburb). If the brush etc is not cleared 200 feets away from the house, or if there is any fire hazard, they are dropping their customers. They haven’t written any new policies in Cali for two years and are looking to drop more.
We’re ok, he said, but all the folks in the hills a couple of miles behind us are not going to be…ouch. Weird because that neighborhood has never had a wildfire, ever.
I would like to see Obama challenge McShame – Mcshame are running a very sleazy campaign or he is totally inept leader. Take your pick Johnny
CNN electoral map has WV blue. I think that’s a little premature just yet, no?
exactly. i hadn’t plan on watching the debate as I don’t want to be exposed to anymore negative energy than necessary but if we have some wine on hand–
Blue Texan upstairs!
Palin’s Hometown Paper Slams Her Response To Troopergate Report: “An Embarrasment”, “Ignorant Or Orwellian”
Allstate is trying to dump every customer they have in FL. They must have so much capital they feel they no longer need to be in the home insurance business.
Actually I was helping my daughter study for her history test and learned that it goes back as far as the Jackson v. Adams election in the early 1800s. Their wives were called wh*res and worse! Jackson blamed his wife’s early death on the nasty campaign.
I’ll doublecheck the wiki. but there you go. pooflinging frontier style. Interesting too that Jackson won with a frontiersman of the people image, when he was a wealthy planter. Quite the pugnacious bully, too.
I see Newton has informed you.
Very relieved for her and her family. Still waiting to see if my friends home is still standing, They aren’t letting people back in
vultures
Heh, I don’t even know when it is.
It’s all premature. The polls do not take into account the massive voting suppression efforts and the likelihood of computer fraud in the tabulating of votes. Now that the economy looks like it might be “stabilizing” and off the front pages McCain will begin to close the current “gap.”
Oh, thanks for letting me know. I guess maybe I could try selling insurance companies some insurance against people collecting their insurance? :P Might help me with the college tuition I’m staring at.
Hopefully the numbers might be balanced (or tipped) by the lacking of polling young people on their cell phones?
John McCain has stopped comparing Obama to a terrorist on the campaign trail. Sarah Palin has stopped comparing Obama to a terrorist on the campaign trail but they still have surrogates preaching the hatred. Sorry John McCain is not a honorable man. IMO (informed) there is only one reason that he would stop mentioning it on the trail and that is he is trying to cover his arse. Normally he does not apologize until after the fact.
They’ll let people back in after the developers have gone in and staked their claim. The insurance companies will pay out a pittance, stopping any attempt to rebuild, the developers will offer another pittance and voila, another condo village is born.
This morning I blew my top when Joe Scarborough went on a rant saying that the McCain/Palin campaign should answer every question with a reference to Bill Ayers. He was yelling the way Buchanan does, and his little cohort, Mika is right in there with him.
This is so totally dangerous and despicable!!!
It is obvious to me that these people have one solution in mind to gain control of the WH.
I say fire Scarborough for his hate speech, and fire his little dog Mika/Toto too!!!
If Pelosi had not been such a frikkin’ coward, we would be in another situation altogether.
KKKarl Rove lives.
You’ve been payin’ way too much attention as to how the thugs drove the economy into the toilet.
John McCain did not stop the references to Ayers and Palin did not stop her He is not like us because of polling numbers or they are honorable. They are only covering the arse’s.
Some where in Hell Joseph Goebbels is looking up and smiling.
I’m hoping the actual turnout numbers show just how far off the polls are without being able to get to folks on cells. IOW I’m hoping for a blowout. I want the Rethugs so embarrassed they cease to be considered a major political party. I want to see the GOP with less followers than the Short Ride for Short Ride Party.
Would you want to suggest your friend urge her dad NOT to watch Lou Dobbs, ever? or fauxnews? After what he’s already been through, I’m not even sure that would help him. Of course he knows what’s out there and, yes, it’s frightening.
I think it’s logical and sensible to be very disturbed by these recent trends. To have supposedly well educated people stoking the fires of hate for their own personal gratification and advancement to the highest offices in the land, is just unbelievable to me. But there it is.
McCain is as guilty as the worst of them. I think he knows exactly what he’s doing. It’s ugly and inexcusable. At first, I thought he was actually mentally deranged. Then I looked at Cindy and Sarah joining in with glee, as if it’s just a hoot. The hate mongering is a deliberate strategy of their campaign.
I regard McCain’s candidacy as a clear and present danger to this country, and the world beyond our borders. They are reckless, and negligent. I hope they are brought up on charges for inciting violence [definitely stay tuned].
In the middle of the never ending Cribbage game he plays with Russert. When either player reaches the half-way point the game is automatically restarted.
Exactly our friends’ situation. Porter Ranch has longed been marketed as ‘gated community paradise’. Nothing but big ass cooki cutter mini mansions tucked behind gates (at least their development).
We’re all hoping for a blowout. Despite Obama not being a perfect candidate for progressives he’s America’s last hope. The Republicans still speak to a far too large segment of the populace, a populace that is ignorant, fearful and easily manipulated. Until the well begins to dry up through education and conversion efforts the Republicans will remain a viable and very dangerous party.
We have to watch. You know that and I do too. The wine sounds like an excellent idea, and maybe an extra pillow to hug. ;->
Want some soothing tea? Don’t let him get to you. I think the man is bipolar because he goes off on his tirades like clock work.
I’ll have to ball up socks so the mr can throw them at the tv. Who am I kidding, I’m the one throwing them. He would never do anything to hurt his toy *g*
dry up thru education?
With all the home-schooling, loony faux-”textbooks”, stove-piping kids into their own closed system, megachurch pressurecookers, I suspect we’ll be at this for awhile longer that we’d wish.
Hi 5 if you’re up for it. I can’t stop at this point either. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself.
Dandy idea. heh heh.
Built to minimum code using the cheapest materials. A friend and I got a look at 3 houses being built a couple years ago. Mini mansions with a $500K price tag in the midst of small homes in an old city, Gulfport. We were talking about the heating and cooling costs of these monsters when I discovered the builder was using the lowest rated insulation possible under the code, R3. Only one has been sold and the builder is living in it. I probably wouldn’t be able to pay the power bill with a month’s pay.
Not just the kids This 59 YO has no land line. For what?
Is it stretch to suggest that the McCain-Palin campaign is, to some extent, “terrorizing” the American electorate with their rhetoric? We’ve seen their rallies bristling with palpable hatred (”Terrorist!”), intimations of violence (”Kill him!”), and real fear (”We’re scared.”) — all of it a direct consequence of McCain-Palin (especially Palin) talking points (”Domestic terrorist . . . domestic terrorist . . . domestic terrorist . . .”).
Conversely, Barack Obama is impugned for teaming up with a group of illustrious and civic-minded Chicagoans, several years back, to engage in — wait for it — education reform.
just listened to talk of the nation on npr and the show was about how both campaigns are guilty
as if!!!!
we have to address this wherever it rears its ugly head – like it did today in Scranton with Palin
from Scranton Times
Chris Hackett addressed the increasingly feisty crowd as they await the arrival of Gov. Palin.
Each time the Republican candidate for the seat in the 10th Congressional District mentioned Barack Obama the crowd booed loudly.
One man screamed “kill him!”
Supporters have been noted shouting “kill him,” “terrorist,” “off with his head” and other equally incendiary terms about Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. Others have directly suggested Mr. Obama is a Muslim, which he is not, or a traitor. Some comments even drew rebuke from Republican presidential nominee John McCain.
Other than the lone man, there were no other such outbursts.
Palin was too young to know what living through the Vietnam era was like. How frightning it was when your son, brother, grandson, cousin, friend, uncle, brother in law, classmate, neighbor, co worker was drafted or worried about being drafted or worse yet died in that war. In my view what Ayers did was not a terriorist attack it was a Vietnam war protest attack.
