If you’ve been wondering why the Republicans have been yammering about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac being the alleged root of the financial meltdown when they really weren’t, there’s a passage in this McClatchy article (h/t Atrios) that provides a clue:
WASHINGTON — As the economy worsens and Election Day approaches, a conservative campaign that blames the global financial crisis on a government push to make housing more affordable to lower-class Americans has taken off on talk radio and e-mail.
Commentators say that’s what triggered the stock market meltdown and the freeze on credit. They’ve specifically targeted the mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which the federal government seized on Sept. 6, contending that lending to poor and minority Americans caused Fannie’s and Freddie’s financial problems.
Ah, but is this true, or is this yet another GOP effort to blame poor brown people for things rich white people did? Signs point to the latter being the case:
Federal housing data reveal that the charges aren’t true, and that the private sector, not the government or government-backed companies, was behind the soaring subprime lending at the core of the crisis.
If the GOP’s bogus arguments sound familiar, it’s because they used the same easily-debunked nonsense to try and blame the current crisis on the 1977 Community Reinvestment Act (because it allegedly forced nice upstanding bankers to give money to black people! Quelle horreur!) — even though the vast majority of the bad loans out there had nothing to do with the CRA. In other words, it’s like the "Operation Hide Behind The D**kies" scene in the South Park movie, with the main difference being that it was a lot easier for the maligned black people in the movie to successfully fight back.
The reason the Republicans are dipping into the race-baiting barrel once again isn’t just because it’s their favorite thing to do. It’s because they have to hide their lead role in ripping out all the finance-industry laws that had saved America from stock market meltdowns during the latter half of the last century. Phil Gramm, John McCain’s go-to guy for financial wisdom, is the lead villain of the piece, as he successfully pushed to kill the Glass-Steagall Act that had kept us and our money safe for so many decades. If most Americans understood this — and that Gramm would likely be Treasury Secretary in a hypothetical McCain administration — then not only would McCain go down in flames, so would the GOP’s downticket races, effectively handing firm control of Congress to the Democrats for a generation. So out come the sleazy race-based bogosities on the CRA and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. It’s their only hope.

great post, PW. especially apropo given the holiday today *spit*
I heard that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were Muslims too.
Don’t forget about Rubin’s role in getting rid of Glass-Steigel.
So this here financial mess was caused by people what ain’t white?
people are pissed. got to give them someone (preferably who are able to defend themselves) to blame or else they might start taking out their anger somewhere else.
i’m seriously worried about a right wing populist revolt in 2012.
Blame everything on the brown people……
Brown people take our jobs
Brown people cause crime
Brown people suck off the government teat……
Brown people get special privileges because they are brown…..
Brown people want to steal your social security
I could go on and on…….
p.s. thanks. beat me to it. *g*
Love this, PW. On several blogs I’ve read lately, the trolls are conflating the two – Fannie & Freddie Mac were required to lend to dark people/poor people by the CRA…. you get the drift.
These people can’t even get their non-facts right.
Next time I’ll arm wrestle you for it.
scapegoats…
if you ain’t white, you ain’t right
There’s a quote ,goes something like this:
Those that ignore history are bound to repeat it’s mistakes
Hope I didn’t butcher it too bad
Maybe Freddie and Fannie should hand out free Tan In the Can with new mortgages.. just to be sure they are in compliance with the Republican delusions.
The irony is, that Mc can’t attack the Ds for that because it lays their own role open to scrutiny.
It’s even better billybugs – “….are doomed to repeat it.”
At least that’s how I recall it – haven’t looked it up.
Oops – looked it up — condemned.
Well, fronting fees for financial deals is what brought down First National City Bank in the 30s. Seems like that’s a lesson everyone forgot.
not if you bring your chain saw. *g*
damn more fires
camp pendleton (2 fires: one burning out in the middle of nowhere, 1 that is threatening a group of homes)
san bernardino – status unknown
Santa Susana/chatsworth – spreading
Sesnon/Porter Ranch Fire (LA & Ventura country) – spreading
Sylmar/Pacoima – spreading
the cloud has a silver lining?
Must be our punishment for allowing teh gays to marry here
thanks for the update. are you safe?
Sawzall. Chain saws are too dangerous for me. *g* back on you.
On blaming the ‘coloured’s’. Philosophy is ‘any port in a storm, and the Thugliks see a storm descending upon them. This is a new version of the dolchstoss
“Seems like that’s a lesson everyone forgot.”
forgot or ignored?
still. i concede.
yeah, we are further west and south (next to the ocean). But tomorrow is yet another red flag day, which means more fire bugs and the possibiltiy of a fire breaking out in our area (lots of brush)
good thing the county leases the super scoopers from canada every year
“Must be our punishment for allowing teh gays to marry here”
If that were the case we’d be burning too!!Massachusetts
I actually heard Christopher Buckley say something smart….. it was on BookTV one Saturday and he said that there should be a cabinet position call The Secretary of History….. This Secretary is required to attend all the meetings and gets the last word/review of any plans……
So the plan is…..”Invade Iraq……. and the Secretary says…… well that didn’t workout that well for X in X year and then when Y did it it was a disaster”
I actually thought it was a good idea…..
nah, you all will get sone unholy blizzard or something. It was either fire, earthquake or flood for us (we get all three on a semi-regular basis)
Your choice.
In a real sense, I’ve been noodling how they must have thought about obvious mistakes that were made again in this cycle. As I’m not a mind reader, I can’t know. But my leading hypothesis is that they thought they knew better. That was actually Stiglitz’s A to a Q I asked him about why he thought a certain approach would work. (Not related to anything in the financial system and it was close to 15 years ago, but I thought it was an A for the ages.)
Sub-prime sub-human,what race was the writing those contracts?
Alt-A ,we know who the A’s are. The losses are huge on this side.
I am nonviolent. Use it only on dead trees and low hanging branches.
It’s hard to believe how WHITE the audiences are at their rallies.
That’s not change we can believe in.
Given how “excited” the McPain crowds are, it would be an act of supreme courage for a person of color to show up.
never knew.
It’s like wonderbread and mayo sandwiches or a blanket of snow
No kidding!
beautiful sunset here …because of fire particles..lots of red, pink, purple, and orange
Sounds pretty bland to me!
So the ski lodge where we stay has a kids table for dinner. When my son was about 7, the server from that table came over and said: “Your son ordered plain spaghetti, white bread and vanilla ice cream. Is that OK?”
ugh–it’s their trademark.
They’re not likely to get any darker skinned people at their rallies since even a sound man was verbally abused. Not likely to get more than 5 or 6 votes from that group either.
lol, there was your clue that he was a republican. (i kid)
for ecahn @ 40
Maybe Freddie and Fannie should hand out free Tan In the Can with new mortgages…
Dayam, ES! 707! ;-)
When is ABC going to give us more of the Couric/Palin interview?
This is OT. I just read for the 3rd time that Rezko is spilling his guts and ‘just wait, he’s going to nail Obama in the next couple of days’. Now, I know these people lie but does anyone know anything about this?
Way OT, sort of: A Nixon special on PBS….a sorry reminder of what a Vice-Presidential choice can do. Thanks, IKE.
At one of the rallies there was a black guy begging McCain to “take it to Obama”…. I read to somewhere that the guy was a radio talk show host (wingnut) and thought to be a campaign plant.
Yupper. He’s just as unwilling to ‘fess up up to his role as is Gramm – and the media is not interested in calling him on it as they know who signs their paychecks.
Yeah, I thought about that after I typed the comment, but that would be totally unfair. Prejudice is not part of the picture.
wow….. Rachel is trying to take it to David Frum…… he keeps weaseling around what she is asking……
(Quel horreur!)
eensy-weensy nitpicky observation: quelle horreur
no one could have anticipated that horror would be feminine… :~)
PUMA droppings. the theory goes that O and some other dems are involved in some RICO violation and that Fitz is going to come down with an idictment any day now
No, where are you reading this?
a conservative talk radio host
hence the, ‘ i kid’ comment
PW thanks for this post! Now how do we get KO and Rachel to blast about it?
Y’know with all the brown blame games the Rethugs play, it’s actually quite pathetic how desperate they are to darken themselves with their personal tanning beds…not that I’m namin’ any names….
Yep. Saw it. Just wanted you to know that great minds think alike and then reject implausible possibilities. *g*
some of the blogs we no longer mention here are running with that story, it is all they have left
I kept hoping she bring up Limbaugh, O’Reilly, etc.
IMHO if there was something to take down Obama they would of done it way before now….. since the DOJ is stacked with wackos……. Since the Republicans total 2008 plan was to run against Hillary……. they were really heartbroken that they lost the one person they were sure they could beat……
Many since Obama became a state senator have been looking to take him down. They do not want him to be a rising star…… I expect that they have combed through every nugget of his and Michele’s life…….. even the kids…….
IMHO ….. there is no there there….
*g* i would hardly rank my mind up by yours but i get what your saying
Plant at the very least.
This is a riff on the scapegoat argument “Conservatism never fails. There are only conservatives who fail it.” Except in this case, they substituted brown people for conservatives.
Frum didn’t have a whole heck of a lot to say when Rachel called him on the “liberals are weak on terror” bullshit, did he?
What I find surprising is how little it has worked. Would have thought it would touch an unconscious chord of racism. Part of the explanantion is that these are hard times and voters want serious choices. But hard times don’t always bring out the best in voters, who often look for scapegoats, so there was no guaranty that it wouldn’t work.
You are so sensitive to the feelings of others – not naming names and all. :) “g”
Speakin’ of houses, interesting juxtaposition at Stop.Think.Vote. of Sarah’s House construction with the construction of the Wasilla Hockey Arena. Would love to get a look at her kitchen…and compare it to the invoices for the sports complex kitchen. Think there’d be any cross-references? She is a Stephens acolyte/trainee, after all.
I don’t know. Have they vetted Malia? Sasha? What are their connections to Rezko or *gasp* Ayers? We do know that they have close ties to two radicals that have been photographed in the midst of a terrorist fist bumb. They call them mom and dad but there is something more there.
Well, they could be saving it for the October surprise. Knowing it would give Obama no time to combat it. Don’t think there’s any there there either, but you won’t know until the election is over.
Blaming the brown people will be a way that the Repugs take away the legitimacy of the Obama Presidency…….. Obama is NOT the real president…..
Brown people voted illegally and stole the election
Brown people killed the economy due to forcing BANKS to make loans to brown people…. Did you know that?
Brown people …… brown people ….. brown people…
and he had nothing whatsoever to say after Rachel said that she would, at his suggestion, invite Wolfowitz onto her show, but given that, despite her daily requests, the McCain campaign had made one person, one time, available for three minutes, she didn’t feel terribly hopeful about his acceptance…
We are all brown people now…
I’m the mother of two very upstanding fine young adult brown people……..
Now you know why Sheriff Joe pushing ALL my buttons……
I think that if there was something there Obama would have already made an offensive move so he would not be on the defensive. Whatever else may be true, I have no reason to believe that he is dishonest or is in this for the money. He could make more as an attorney.
I feel so LOVED:) (sniff)
I keep seeing it in comments from some McC supporters in a ‘just you wait and see’ kind of tone. Then after I posted my question, I found this at DKos:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/…..825/629725
The elitism just oozes from Frum, doesn’t it? It seemed to me that Mr. Frum is just a tad upset at the selection of McCain as the Republican nominee. Additionally, the selection of Palin as the VP nominee has apparently pushed him over the edge. His demeanor screamed restrained anger. For him to support and/or defend Wolfowitz on any level is a clear indication of his similar ideology…the ideology of death and destruction at any cost. Mr. Frum, your smugness tells a great deal more than your condescending words. Take a seat in the back and get comfortable.
they can say what they want (they do anyhow) i mean how fucked up is it that we have a freakin holiday for some racist asshole who stole, kidnapped, enslaved, raped , etc in the name of the crown ind god. *spit* oh yeah, it was just brown people, so it’s okay
How is that race going I gave to his opponent?
We are all brown people now…
“Ich bin ein braun”
it’s on the so called puma sites as well. i believe flowbee has written something about it
It’s easy to make scapegoats out of the people that are least able to fight back!
Perhaps we are beyond horror or as the French might say:
Or l’horreur est dès lors hors l’horreur.
Good thought. He sure would.
There is no way an out of state paper beat the Chicago Tribune on a story that helps Republicans in Illinois.
The Trib hates Dems and they got lots more local sources.
small correction:
you would just say–
ich bin braun
Saban has been endorsed by the AZ Republic…… a lot of police departments across the state…….
Old Joe’s jail just lost their federal health certificate….. putting the county at risk for millions more in law suits……. local station is investigating a recent death in the jail where the video contradicts the written report…… I see more millions going out the door with that one…….. Arpio’s goons are harassing Saban donors …… when the Sheriff has a huge media staff some making 6 figures….
seriously? wtf? disgraceful
What I’ve seen is that Blagojevich (IL governor) is probably not sleeping that well at night. This fact is usually buried in the articles on Rezko talking just above the piece where it says Obama probably is not being targeted.
Why does a sheriff have a media staff? What is the world coming to…..
Recall that this was the story way back when Rezko was before the Grand Jury. When the indictments came out, Obama was not named.
Then they started claiming that “Illinois Politician #2″ was a code for Obama. But the other witnesses before the Grand Jury stated that Obama’s name was not given by them, and in, fact, neither the Grand Jury itself, nor the Federal Prosecutor inquired about Obama.
Yet the tale persisted. At the conviction of Rezko, US Atty. Fitzgerald stated that Obama was not “Politician #2″ and was not a target of any investigation at all.
Rezko stated that some of the Federal Prosecutors HAD tried to pressure him to turn in various State and Elected Federal officials, including Obama. He said that Obama was in no way involved with his criminal activities.
I think that these rumors are simply related to the fact that Rezko got an extension on his sentencing hearing.
serves me right for riffing in a furrin language I don’t know…
or in English or or in French? (both work, give or take a comma) :~)
Obama should find a way to work Duke Cunningham’s name into a debate answer. If they want to talk about criminals we can start naming names.
It goes right along on why a County Sheriff has TWO tanks…… not just one but TWO…
Seem to remember seeing something the other day pointing out that every winning Repub ticket since 1932 has had either Richard Nixon or a Bush on it. Sorta shocking when put that way.
good gawd
I has me e nuff truble wit english!
Bon soir,mon amis!
It is amazing to watch this 1969 stuff…tricky Dick. Secretive. Couldn’t accept losing the war. Can we quick electing criminals and idiots for President. We do have a different choice.
tanks? good grief
… on behalf of sane Canadians, I’d like to apologize for David Frum …
Did ya see the news today that the Drilla From Wasila met with Sen. Toobz and then with VECO immediately after one day last year according to her sked book? Seems worth an investigation, especially since a bunch of Alaska Repubs just determined that Sayrah violated ethics laws.
http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/…..ationship/
i dunno, given that we americans have given the world george w bush
Actually, I thought you were riffing pretty well.
Someone told Kennedy before his Berlin speech to drop the “ein,” because he was otherwise effectively saying he was a “jelly donut.” Kennedy reinserted “ein” in his “ein Berliner” phrase anyway to emphasize unity.
Me cappuccino brown. Me not Muslim. Me paid off mortgage last year. Me voting for ‘that one’. What did me do to Fannie and Freddie, now?
Blame brown people, don’t investigate the folks that made stupid loans and created derivatives, don’t mention who deregulated this entire sector of the economy. And, for heaven’s sake, don’t mention who was in charge at the SEC and Treasury and the Fed while this was all going on. Plus pin prostitutes on chicken little. Check, check, check, check please!
