Oops! Sorry, but I’ve wanted to go off on that set for a week or two, but you’ve given me the occasion to do so.

Basically, the set sucks, bigtime. But the thing that pisses me off is that the techies have played games with the guest monitor that Rachel looks into.

If you look at it from her over-the-shoulder camera, the aspect ratios are all wrong and the guests look fat of face.

Tonight I came up with a conjecture. The often do a flanking shot that includes both the monitor and Rachel. If the guests were in proper proportion in the screen, they’d look horribly thin of face from that angle. I conjecture that they’ve been fattened up to correct for that, which causes them to look fat of face from the over-Rachel’s-shoulder perspective.

Anyway, I just got two emails back from these usually silent folks regarding Ian’s latest FDL post, which I sent out a link to:
– “I say again: what do we have to do to make this guy president???”
– “This just makes so much sense – it’s fookin scary.”
Both of those responders are scientists who have PhDs in the physical sciences.

This reformulation of American policy started over a decade ago with Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz asserting an American role as the world’s policeman. They sought to reconstitute various other countries according to, as they described it, American national interest. They proposed that America assume the right to attack other nations and to change their regimes. This was not a theoretical or academic exercise, but it was encapsulated in the U.S. national security policy.

The basic idea is that America assumes the right to intervene anywhere in the world, not only where it regards enemies operating against it, but where the United States feels that other countries or movements might rival its power. This policy was effected by former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld when he created an organization called the »Special Operations Command« which was set up in Florida with 53,000 men and last year’s budget (FY 2008) of 8 billion dollars, Rumsfeld asserted the right to station American special forces – »special op’s forces« as they are called – anywhere in the world to assassinate enemies, overthrow governments, and otherwise engage in acts of war and not be under the supervision of Congress or the designated American representatives abroad – the ambassadors – but to operate solely under the discretion of the Secretary of Defense. And this operation actually exists today. I have described it as being a “loose cannon” for American policy.

They did it by claiming that the Soviets had a new secret weapon of mass destruction that the president didn’t know about, that the CIA didn’t know about, that nobody knew about but them. It was a nuclear submarine technology that was undetectable by current American technology. And, they said, because of this and related-undetectable-technology weapons, the US must redirect billions of dollars away from domestic programs and instead give the money to defense contractors for whom these two men would one day work or have businesses relationships with.

The CIA strongly disagreed, calling Rumsfeld’s position a “complete fiction” and pointing out that the Soviet Union was disintegrating from within, could barely afford to feed their own people, and would collapse within a decade or two if simply left alone.

In those days, we were scared to death of their mobile missiles and they were scared to death of our high-precision cruise missles. Both sides knew that anti-missle missiles wouldn’t work. The Soviets went ahead and developed them anyway — they have a military industrial complex too. We were smarter, and slapped down fools like Rumsfeld, Cheney, and Wolfie. That lasted until the election of Reagan.

After the fall of the Soviet Union, some of their experts met with some of our experts and said in effect: “We thought you guys were so damn cool not copping to this ABM pitch, but then suddenly you seemed to get stupid — what happened?”

The IRI currently operates with a robust budget of $79 million. Though one of John McCain’s goals as chairman of the organization has been to increase private funding for the IRI, the overwhelming majority of funds for the organization comes from two public sources, the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

Stanley Lucas, the head of the IRI effort in Haiti, was instrumental in the creation of the Democratic Convergence and, thus, the eventual fall of the Aristide government. Lucas has been described by Mother Jones Magazine as “the scion of a powerful Haitian family with long-standing animosity toward Aristide…” Lucas’ family had close ties to the ruthless Duvalier regime that preceded Aristide and has similarly close ties to the Haitian military, which was an important element of the 2004 coup. Two of Lucas’s cousins allegedly were responsible for organizing a massacre of 250 peasants protesting for land reform.
