Senator McCain, if you'd still like to keep up the fiction that yours is a respectful campaign and that you believe Senator Obama is a decent family man and citizen, you'd better stop TIME's Karen Tumulty from writing down what Virginia state GOP chairman Jeffrey M Frederick says as he briefs your volunteer canvassers -- and what the volunteers say to each other:
With so much at stake, and time running short, Frederick did not feel he had the luxury of subtlety. He climbed atop a folding chair to give 30 campaign volunteers who were about to go canvassing door to door their talking points — for instance, the connection between Barack Obama and Osama bin Laden: "Both have friends that bombed the Pentagon," he said. "That is scary."
It is also not exactly true — though that distorted reference to Obama's controversial association with William Ayers, a former 60s radical, was enough to get the volunteers stoked. "And he won't salute the flag," one woman added, repeating another myth about Obama. She was quickly topped by a man who called out, "We don't even know where Senator Obama was really born." Actually, we do; it's Hawaii.
Mr Frederick caught on to the respectful atmosphere among his storm-troopers, though. He realized that TIME's readers might learn too much from further exposure:
The Republicans wouldn't allow me to tag along with their volunteers....
I'm sure these patriots spent the afternoon chatting with their neighbors about the drawbacks to Senator Obama's health plan, or the advantages of privatizing Social Security.
John McCain and the GOP: this year, they are all about the issues.
.
UPDATE: Via Glenn Greenwald, some fascinating background on Jeffrey Frederick from Virginia blogger Lowell Feld at RaisingKaine.com as well as this canny note:
Remember, this wasn't some offhand remark by Frederick; he said it knowing that a reporter from TIME MAGAZINE was in the room taking notes for a story! Imagine what he says when the media isn't present?!?

Aloha, Teddy!
hiya, CT!
Hawaii’s still some exotic foreign place to these yokels, eh?
No matter what else you can say about it, “that one” is not a term of respect.
“Ein Volk! Ein Reich! Ein Furher!”
That would be my guess.
Hey Teddy!
Say it ain’t so!
teddy! i’ll grab the barf bags and set them up near the power stations. this is forking sick.
The reports of remarks made by McCain supporters reveal such depths of both ignorance and hatred that I sincereky hope the Secret Service is keeping notes. They’ll be busy if/when Obama wins.
They are Republicans, they don’t do subtlety.
—You know what? It’s time that normal Joe six-pack American is finally represented in the position of vice presidency.” - Sarah Palin

Talked to my mom about that today. Raised in pre-WW2 St Louis, she immediately recognized it as a derogatory reference. She said she’d heard other whites use it a lot about, and to, people of color. She had a more visceral reaction to it that persons of color I’ve talked to about it, who heard it as disrespectful but not racist.
Since mom’s close in age to McCain, I’ll take her word for it that someone in her generation meant it the way she heard it.
Lotsa docs tonite! Hi y’all
Oh, you ain’t seen nothing yet. This is going to get much, much worse as the election gets nearer and Obama’s lead increases. Not only is he a Democrat, he’s (*GASP*) black.
They are going to be busy before that, if they are doing their jobs. Unfortunately, that is not a given with Bush in charge.
gonna have to order larger barf bags when i order more triple strength brain bleach
Maybe we need to infiltrate the republican party. They have gone nutso!
I am hoping that we can get a good “denounce and reject” thing going here on Frederick, especially after McCain said on Friday that his supporters “don’t have to be scared” of an Obama presidency. If that’s so, why is the Virginia GOP chairman calling Obama “scary,” Senator McCain? Huh?
Incidentally, this 33-year old wingnut Jeffrey Frederick beat Jenna Bush’s father-in-law in his re-election bid to chair the Virginia GOP!
Suz, thanks so much for the tips on getting videos on my laptop. Works perfectly now!
To anyone who grew up in the South (and St. Louis is very Southern in many ways), the rhetoric of this campaign has consistently screamed race baiting.
No subtlety, just a little dog-whistle to fire up the troops.
Late entry. California is kinda behind Virginia too.
No, it isn’t. Unfortunately, because there seem to be yokels out there who are more than willing to hint at the use of violence. We probably shouldn’t be surprised, since violence (and corruption) seems to be what Republicans understand best.
hey all….silly season has been replaced by Vigilante season..ht/ Rich
glad it helped loohoo
I liked what Hillary said, about recovering from the Bushes
As the Denver incident showed clearly, there are some who are willing to do much more than hint.
push em back - push em back, way back
Of course. Race baiting is another Republican favorite. Ain’t they just charming?
Hillary: “America Will Once Again Rise From The Ashes Of The Bushes”
Heh, we’re too far left, literally and figuratively, for ‘em…! ;-)
Really?!!! Link, perchance?
I think it’s an Irish-ism. My mom used to say it. Say, you’re talking about an election, somebody mentions a candidate she doesn’t like. “I don’t trust that one.” If she didn’t like kids we hung around with. “You watch that one. He’s no good.” Stuff like that. But yeah, certainly not respectful. Even though I’d heard it before, it still stood out. Not how one Senator refers to another in his presence. But all in all not a big deal. Just another bonehead move by McCain.
It has been the invisible plank in the Republican Party platform since Nixon.
by the by…the creep who said all this stuff is another beady eyed Scarbro
look a like…i shitteth you NOT
I’m proud of mom, though. She’s come a long way to overcome the views she was raised with. She had two friends come up to her the other day, secret-like in the ladies room, who took out papers they’d been given by the GOP stalwart amongst them, that were all about Muslim/madrassa/birth certificate. Mom realized the stalwart has stopped bringing that stuff up at the bridge table, and just slips it to the other ladies secretly now.
At least her friends know who to ask to get it all debunked.
She also had a lawn sign delivered today; she and her next-door neighbors have Obama/Biden signs up. I think the Veep choice went a long way with her — Joe’s quite swoonworthy I guess.
It is an inherently dehumanizing construction.
Hi Loo Hoo! It’s in the link in my update, from RaisingKaine.com
said it before. say it again. all the talk by mccain about fannie mae and freddie mac “pushing mortgages on people who couldn’t afford them” gets the ears of the base all perked up. need some pushback. i don’t wanna see Obama limping across the finish line. wanna see him just crush this guy.
Heh. But let’s not forget that some of that corporate deregulation that paved the way for the current debacle came to us courtesy of the Clinton administration.
Congrats to your mom! Sounds like one very cool lady. My father also grew up in pre-war St. Louis, so I know where she comes from.
Good for Mom Partridge!!! Send her my love.
Loo Hoo, I’ve been thinking just that for quite awhile. My reasoning is this: Assuming McCain gets stomped, there’s going to be a civil war inside the Republican party, between the neo-cons and the traditional conservatives. Unlike some, I don’t believe the Republican Party will be destroyed by a huge loss, and as they have demonstrated, they are far better at opposition than governing. No-there will be a Republican party, and the characteristics of it will be important to everyone, as it has that habit of winning elections. A Republican Party that can be counted on to at least try to govern competently is in everyone’s interest, and I am seriously considering, should Obama indeed win, becoming a Republican. Not to oppose a progressive, but to take part in that war for the Republican Party’s soul.
YMMV/
Sorry. I did read that.
LOL. Never heard Joe described as swoonworthy. LOL. I think Joe would blush.
is MO up for grabs?
Scary territory. Why should I be scared to go to republican events? Totally weird. Hopefully Obama can unite us once again.
I would, if I lived there, join the Alaska Indepedence Party, for sure!
Only 25% of subprime mortgages were bought by FFM, up from 11%. Bush pushed them to get into buying more subprime and Alt-A. The rest were in the private market without any secondary market involvement, just wrapped into exotic derivatives. FFM had accounting and lobbying problems two-three years ago, but that had nothing to do with the current crisis — just a matter of too much money slopping around with nowhere to go but into expensive favors for legislators, and into Rick Davis’s “Affordable Housing Alliance.”
all aboard the hate talk express!
No problem. I often forget what I’ve read. It’s amazing I don’t end up writing here about stuff I’ve already read here.
Oh, I think Joe has a certain raffish Irish charm for some ladies of a certain age. Well, a few.
Hiya skippy!
Aready tried the infiltration bit. Friend of mine decided to run as a Rethug in District 11, Castor’s seat, in 06. No Rethugs had declared so there was no primary. Figured we might have a chance. Went to a lot of party functions (I was campaign treasurer - also for Samm Simpson running in District 10) and they were like Hilter youth groups. Lockstep all the way. Same with the Log Cabin Republicans of Tampa. We figured they’d be at least a little progressive. Fugedaboutit. These are some hard core zombies. Like the Dems, if you didn’t have the party’s blessing you were getting nowhere. Couldn’t even get enough signatures to get on the ballot.
you’re right. our peoples need to be saying this alot more.
http://www.mcclatchydc.com/251/story/53802.html
hey skippy - and thanks for the shout-out
If the little Nazi’s canvass by my place, which is doubtful since I live in an urban downtown area, I’ll be sure and record their little nonsense. I’ll just let them run off and say “Really! That’s amazing, I never knew this. Can I get some documentation for this that I can show my friends! Do you have someone above you giving this information that I can contact! If this is true, I’m definitely voting McCain!”
This stuff needs to be documented.
Obama raised record cash in September.
my mom would’ve liked him alot. But not loved him. That abortion thing…….. my SIL loves him and she’s not much older than me. Joe’s cool.
McCain people want the media to carry this story however sick and twisted it is. Because hey, it’s not the economy! McCain, offering scapegoats by the dozens vs. solutions.
People are scared and want an outlet for their fury. That’s what is so irresponsible of mccain and palin. I’m sick and tired of Rick Davis and his ilk saying oh, are we hurting Obama’s feelings? They know what they are doing and since when would they start caring if anyone gets hurt?
I’m sick and tired of McCain saying “it’s not me, I’m not saying those terrible things”. Is that leadership? Is that taking responsibility? No.
No way. No McCain.
Charm he has. No question. Good looking, honest, real.
Palin at Florida rally:
An’ I wanna give a shout out to all the Klansmen and NeoNazis here. (applause. nods like bobble-head doll). That’s right. You get extra credit for every black person you intimidate outta votin’.
Careful, C’ape, ya can’t be overly exuberant… It’ll raise their hackles…! ;-)
Also, they have a good look at Jill (who is terrific), and think, “She likes him well enough, so do I.”
You’re right. The loss won’t destroy them… but I sure hope the investigations I hope to goodness that the next Dem congress will initiate, will.
If they come to place (which has never happened), I am more likely to make them seriously reconsider their position on the Second Amendment.
Related, except from OH. Please see my #27 downstairs. thanks. tired but not discouraged. gonna quit for tonite. -A.
http://firedoglake.com/2008/10.....nt-1680125
Yeah, that stuff they are throwing at Freddie and Fannie just galls me. The crooks live on Wall street.
Jill will prove to be a powerful force for education in this country! I’m getting so positive!!
It is amazing when our parents overcome their upbringing and environment….. My Dad has a picture of his parents in their white robes when they lived in TN….. my grandmothers explanation was that it was a social organization……. Now Granddad’s don’t like to say they have favorites but my youngest son adopted from Korea has a very special spot in his heart…….it took a frail little 4 yr old boy who spoke no English to call him Abbogee (kid Korean for Grandpa)……..
Jeffery Feldman over at his blog has been talking about these threats and that it could spill over on to canvassers, GOTV, lower level candidates…….. we need to have heightened level of awareness for possible threats…..
Early for me.
Goodnight, all. The best of all possible tomorrows to you all.
According to Realclearpolitics McCain up by .4 So still in play!
Night, RonD.
Heh, all those years of practice in warping minds pays off, eh? :D
same to you Ron
Aloha, Ron!
g’nite rond
I just can’t keep track of the snap polls, tracking polls, weekly polls, Gallup, NYT, WSJ, Rasmussen,CNN. MSNBC, all of them. So many. Every day So confusing, ya know. I mean, I look at these things to find out about how the election is going and they just confuse me even more. Finally. Finally, I stumbled across one source that tells me the only number I need to know.
http://stopallmonsters.blogspo.....hebag.html
There are all sorts of threats to our freedoms. I just got an e-mail from my cousin’s daughter-in-law with a petition for prayer in the schools - had almost 2000 signatures. I answered with “don’t send me any more of this religious stuff - it offends me.” Guess that will take care of that relationship.
IMHO what McCain, RNC and the GOP is doing is doing what they did to Clinton….. Bind him in a box….. take away his power…… put Obama into a situation that 100% of all energies are focused on fighting off the swarms of bees……. we will have Faux 24/7 going on the scandal de jur….
this will prevent Universal Healthcare….. economic recovery…… ending the war…..
i’m not takin’ any shit from anybody. somebody punches me and knocks me down, champ, i’m gettin’ right back up. joe says so.
Especially when it is accompanied by a .421 magnum.
Me too! Of course I’m from PA/DE so I am a big Biden fan (though I moved away many years ago)… also BO in Ohio today! Yea!
some days i just want tocrawl in a cocoon
I’m really glad you’re excited, Loo Hoo.
It was a long, hard primary but I’m glad we’re all together.
I laughed really hard at Jerry O’Donnell’s silly rap imitation of John Edwards last night on MADTV, too. Seems like eons ago JRE was my man.
Make that .41 magnum.
Hey, great rebut ad with Joe Biden on AMC just now — “those ridiculous ads won’t work…)
And walked a neighborhood and knocked on doors. What a great idea.
But now we have the blogs! And here we can fight back against their madness.
close. i’m looking forward to election night.
Wonderful news! Thanks, Adie.
My 85 year old mum asked me why a candidate without computer skills can’t win. It didn’t take long to explain (she loves her NYT online every morning).
Good night, Ron.
Yes! Yes!
At the top select no tossup states and the prediction looks good for Obama!
There is another way to fight all this negativity from McCainCO…… vote early….. get it done….. drop it off at the election board….. then no matter what they say…… you have already decided…… show them how little it means to you……
IF you can vote early……. get er done…..
Heh, what’re ya hunting…? Elephant? Oh wait… D’oh! ;-)
Went to an art tour open house. Dhe was a potter (from a military family, born in Taiwan) and her son was dressed like Sanurai…complete with sword which he was fidgeting with. They had a watermelon they were anticipating hacking set up on a sacrificial daiz. I arrived after all the other guests had gone. I was wearing my peace hat which I had completely forgotten about. After dome talk the son went into the gouse and came out with a second sword. The mom decided she would cut the melon and replaced him on the diaz and whacked it hitting the concrete patio. Somehow, with all the sword play it did not seem to be the place to be.
By the way Northern Virginia is full of military types, pentagon and CIA bedroom community. I attended a Military acadeny there. Plenty of red necks too. They were preaching to the choir.
DailyKos is the most trusted name in polls. Right up front.
almost midgetnight here in EST-ville (when is daylight savings time? soon, yes?). gotta hit the hay. got one house. had one spouse. si se puede.
Actually bought it for bears, but would work for that as well.
As well it should. I’ve forfeited friends too.
Almost half of California votes early or by mail. I think that’s why the nastiness started so soon — the voting pattern has changed without our really noticing it.
I also think it’s best to vote early to allow the campaign to free up resources to concentrate on voters who need the attention; I certainly don’t.
There is a great DKos diary about Cleveland churches taking busloads of people to vote today, Sunday, at the BOE. I did last week, too, and the excitement in the air was palpable.
Night, Bfl.
i think so. the thing that still worries me is that an uptick or two for mccain in a poll or two in a state or two and the media grabs the story as “McCain Attacks Working//Doubts Persist About Obama.” With each passing day, though, less and less chance of that. McCain’s campaign, I think, is beginning to smell like death.
g’nite bfl
Voting early got Clinton a ton of votes in Cali that would have gone for Obama weeks later. There is a downside.
Night. See ya ’round.
you too. always a pleasure.
Isn’t it amazing? No matter who we wanted in the primaries, the choice is so clearly Obama. We didn’t appreciate the candidate we had.
Love you, Barack Obama!
Think I will head out as well. Have a curriculum meeting in the morning (BORING! & tedious).
They’re campaigning on lies because they know they won’t win with the truth. It’s really that simple. And don’t bother asking how low they’re willing to go. There’s no “absolute zero” when it comes to Republican sleaze.
g’nite dr dick
Those lying sacks of crap at POLITICO have slightly corrected their latest falsehood. At first they claimed Crazy John’s new tax cuts would help the middle class. Now, they admit these are tax cuts to help the investor class, who need more money.
Of course “middle class” has never been part of the Manchurian Candidate’s campaign.
Just finished my news roundup, and I have to admit that never in my life did I think I’d see the day when a black Democratic Presidential candidate would have a credible chance at winning North Carolina.
Aloha, DD and BFL!
