Trying to head off a potentially embarrassing state ethics report on GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, campaign officials released their own report Thursday that clears her of any wrongdoing.
AWESOME!
McCain spokesman Taylor Griffin, who distributed the campaign’s report, said it was written by the McCain-Palin campaign staff and based on public filings and Todd Palin’s affidavit.
That’s L’état c’est moi you can believe in my friends! Who has ever been more honest and dependable than a campaign staff, especially on the ol’ Bullshit Express?
In other morning news, the Asian markets are sinking faster than Palin’s approval ratings.

No shit — really? How frightfully astute of him to notice… Putz. Mr. Krugman writes of a “Moment of Truth,” and says if a new rescue plan is not announced this weekend, the world economy may experience its worst slump since the Great Depression. Every single human being I know is perfectly well aware of this. Our “leaders,” on the other hand, not so much.

The coffee and tea are ready, and since some folks say that bananas raise serotonin levels and help ease depression I’ve got banana pancakes today. I never had a “comfort item” like Linus’ blanket when I was a kid, but I’m rather wishing I had one now so I could sit in the corner and suck my thumb until things got better. The market will probably drop another 200 when he speaks and will finish down another 600 or so if the European stocks are anything to go by.

A little. The wife and I started a conversation on this whole mess as we were grocery shopping yesterday. I suggested that in addition to the regular stuff, that we also start going for dried beans, rice, and the like.
A couple months ago I started buying gold. Not a lot (not rich) but some. I now have ~30% of my savings in the form of gold coin.
Maybe this will all work out so-so OK. For the moment our jobs are secure (mine is solid for another year for sure – NIH grant, already funded) but still…I’ve had a bad feeling for a while and quietly (without telling my wife why) started encouraging stocking up on food and water, bought a generator, expanded our garden (have plans to expand it more), stocked up on bullets and related – that was based upon the sickly way things seemed to be going wrt political aspects rather than economic – the “traitor” talk if you opposed the war or Bush, domestic spying, expanding brutality by the Brown Shirts (cops, blackwater, etc).
As the Bush Admin has continued, I got to feeling more and more uneasy. As I tracked economic websites, my feelings on the economic front became more and more uneasy. Nice how all the shit mixes together into one big unease.
A coworker of my wife’s parents are retired. Apparently they had/have a buttload of money, having built up a huge stock portfolio. It was worth about 2 million dollars. After repeated questioning recently by this coworker, her father finally took a look at what the recent market turmoil has done to their nestegg. They have lost around $800,000!
My wife’s parents live off interest and income from a Trust (The principal destined for my wife and her siblings one day). They have been living VERY well, but profligately. We have started to wonder/worry about their situation. Have they actually SAVED anything? Is their giant home paid off? What about all the improvements? Then there’s worries about her siblings. Their jobs are particularly subject to wipeout with current economic shit going on.
Yeah, I’m (we’re) a bit worried. Just a tiny little lead ball sitting in the belly right now. Hopefully it wont cannonball.
Morning pups. For the first time in my life I am afraid about the economy. Not my personal economy, which is fine and will survive the crash, but everybody else’s. The Icelandic meltdown is terrifying. So far, people here have remained calm — thank god for their underinformed brains and hearts. But that state of bliss isn’t going to last much longer. Another big drop today and Tuesday (I think the markets are closed Monday for Columbus Day) will spell the end of the illusion.
As to Palin, her Irrelevance is talking to the converted.
Well, I suppose…her experience with Mr. Potato Heads would be a great asset at this time. LOL
I wonder how many Mainers will freeze to death this winter because they can’t afford oil, because they lost their job, and because they can’t find a new job in George Bush’s New World Order economy? Huh. I wonder. My feeling is it’s better to freeze to death than starve to death. Less suffering because you just go to sleep.

I also have close relatives that lived for the acquisition of money, wondered at me for never investing the stock market, bought and sold homes during the bubble, shook their heads at our lifestyle of growing our own food and working in the not for profit world and now they are conspicuous for their silence. Not a peep, not a sound.
We have never lived a “rich” lifestyle but at least we do not have as far to fall and I am still eating from the 2007 garden!! and have about 50lbs of organic meat in the freezer. And I’ll stack my 12 year old car (200,000 miles this week!) still getting 30 miles a gallon against their gas guzzling SUV any day. I also have all my heating bills taken care of with the 3 1/2 cords of wood stacked and ready to go.

The real question is will there be an election and if there will be enough of anything to govern. Certainly things will not be the same. And this raises the question if some radical changes (progressive ideas) may get considered. It’s pretty obvious that Wall Street magic a la Bernanke and Paulson is a non starter. Those bills could be recinded. Or will be throw good money after bad with the same insane “fixes” which don’t and haven’t worked.
Unfortunately, we don’t know IF the dems will be seated after an election, but we do know that there are few progressive there ANYWAY so the question remains, How will the progressive voices and agendas be considered? Is this Denis and Bernie’s time to shine? Willl Pelosi and Reid turn to them and say..”OK we screwed up… give it a shot?” Not likely, but a tad more likely .
Most likely is that the election will be postponed a year or two until the economy is stabilized. Give fascism a try!

Actually Nixon did do something similar in the Watergate scandal. Before the Supreme Court decision in favor of releasing the White House tapes, Nixon’s people released an edited version of the transcripts of the tapes, where that version largely cleared Nixon of any serious wrongs.
When the unedited transcripts finally appeared, it was clear that Nixon had been lying again. His doom was sealed.
