In Ohio, if you move, you do not have to change your driver’s license address until the next time it expires.

So, I’m wondering if this means everyone who’s recently moved will be automatically flagged under this. (And, of course, with all the recent foreclosures in Ohio, this number is growing quickly.)

When we lived in CA, Mrs. Peterr seemed to get called for jury duty quite often, while I only got a jury duty summons every now and then. After a couple of years, she noticed that some of the jury summons for her came addressed using her proper hyphenated last name, while others came with no hyphen.

A few phone calls later, she discovered that the DMV and the voter registration computers treated hyphenated names differently (the coding for one accepted hyphens, while the other didn’t). And of course, there was nothing she could do about it except tell the court some version of “I just got called a month ago, under the other spelling of my name — and if my having two spellings of my name bothers you, please take it up with the DMV and voter registration folks. I can’t get anywhere with them, but maybe they’ll listen to you.”

The female clerks in the courthouse were quite sympathetic.

I pity the folks in OH with hyphenated names, or whose DMV or VR paperwork was handled by someone with bad typing skills.

Also, if you don’t have your name exactly the same on each kind of file. so if SS has you witha middle name and Motor vehicles has you with a middle initial but Board of Elections has you with just first and last name, guess what’s gonna happen?

The Ohio GOP had sued the Ohio Secretary of State to force her to do the match ups of voter information against Social Security and Motor Vehicle information. This matching process is required by the antipodally named “Help America to Vote Act,” HAVA.

as you know looseheadprop, using social security for this purpose is illegal.

I want to remind everyone, very few people have the same address as their social security records document, you would have to make those changes directly to their office.

Social Security is famous for not having good address info. Also, as I noted above people don’t always list their name exactly the same way.

CNN carried this story last night about what it indicates is fraudulent ACORN voter registration in Indiana.

Don’t forget, Republicans will stop at nothing to win. They may lose the ballot but they will still have the bullet.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not suggesting that ACORN did a first rate job in their registration drive. It seems to me to have been a really sloppy effort, focused on gross numbers of applications turned in, with really poor quality control.

So, now the Boards of Elections are stuck sorting through a lot of chaff looking for the good applications. ACORN has been a mixed blessing at best

My wife added my name on to her full name, instead of dropping her maiden name. She did not hyphenate. Also, she goes by her middle name. There is no telling who has what version of her name on file.

They are doing this crap in Georgia, also. The SOS office is being sued by someone who registered, then was told by mail that he had to provide ID. He did, and was registered. He later got a letter stating that if he did not provide proof of citizenship, he would not be able to vote.

GA is now a “lean Republican” state. They are doing everyting they can to lean it further to the R’s.

I agree. I regret when it gives the claims of the McCain crowd any legitimacy.

This is so disgusting! Barack Obama has being in the presidential race for two years and they can not spell his bame correctly? This is somehting that we all need to watch and be ready to address now not later! It just makes me so sad to see this kind of trickery and lack of professionalism from any state agency.

We all need to be on our guard on this one! It will not be the last attempt to steal this election.

Are that any legal actions that can be taken to ensure that all ballots in every state are printed with B. Obama’s name spelled correctly?

This has really upset me personally and I am even more determined to ensure that this election is not stolen since I feel the course of our nation depends so heavily on it.

Absentee ballots in NY go out through the mails. If it can be proven that a person or persons within the Board of Elections did this deliberately, thereby depriving or attemtping to deprive people of a thing of value–to wit–their vote

IANAL, not by a long shot. But I am stubborn and prone to turning anger into avoiding obstacles rather than banging heads like Sarah’s gang of thugs.

So, I try, with mixed success, to think harder than the opposition.

Of this was borne a perhaps silly and unworkable idea but, with your indulgence, I will throw it out for comment, if warranted. If not, just ignore.

In a case such as that of the misprinted NY ballots, would it be possible that a judge at some level, or some other official, could make a ruling allowing a one-for-one cure for the mistake. Any person possessing a ballot with their own name on the official mailing envelope, might be given the right to turn in the misprinted one, and be issued a new, correctly printed one. They might be required to sign an affidavit doohinkie and present photo i.d. to do it but, if they could, they would be allowed to submit the new ballot to be counted if they surrendered their erroneous old one.

I know, bad idea. Absentee means the many of these people expect NOT to be present and available to vote in person on Election Day, so how do you reach them, yadda yadda.

But does this half-baked scheme idea prompt some sharper mind to come up with anything? anything at all?

I’m getting extremely peeved at this disenfranchisement of voters shtick rearing its ugly head over and over and over! Dang! HOW do we get these &*@#s to understand once and for all that we’re fed up with this nonsense. We will not surrender our Constitutional rights. NO!

I worked as a polling monitor for the NYS Democrats in 2006 and was amazed at how ill-informed many of the workers were. People were being asked for ID by the local GOP grand dame until I pointed out that this was not required. The local GOP candidates and their cronies were used to camping out in the senior citizen’s center where one of the polling places was located and I had to go there and ask to see their poll watcher credentials. Apparently no one had ever challenged them before.

Last election I was a registered independent and was requested by the BoE to serve as an inspector since they didn’t have enough people. The Republican rep I was teamed with tried turning people away (there was a hotly contested contest betw Sue Kelly and John Hall which Hall won) when she couldn’t get the machine to work and then she tried to foist a provisional ballot on one guy who just laughed at her. She had forgotten to turn the lever which activates the machine.

At the end of the night we had thirteen provisional ballots and she was refusing to count them with the excuse, “But we don’t know what party they belong to.” I asked her what relevance that had to do with someone voting and she just blurted out that Kelly might lose. I then wondered how many other times this woman had cowed other people into accepting her opinion of how votes should be counted in the past.

I’m really gonna be sad to see the lever machines go here in NY.

Biden smoothly carried on with nary a glimmer of visible reaction, and claims not to have noticed – the ultimate put-down, because after the intro., Biden emphasized in rather gushy fashion, his appreciation of the [exceptionally eloquent] introduction. Biden’s quick. I think he heard, all right, but did his best to make it disappear. Can’t they vet these local dingdongs better so this sorta stuff doesn’t happen?

REALLY OT: Does anyone else see a budding Peyton Place or Springer-smashup possibility looming with the 2-3/odds on R candydate couples? I could have sworn Cindy and Sarah inserted a different brand of competition in the Strongsville mashup, vie-ing for Johnbuoy’s favor, mreorrrrr! – or maybe a reeely reely bad sit-com, if the future of the country and the world only weren’t at stake. It didn’t take a judge. The Bi partisan NYS Board of Elections has already ordered that a second wave of correctly printed ballots be amiled to the voters who got the Osama ballots.

The only reamining problem will be if the voter returns the wrong one in confusion or attemtps to cross out “Osama” and write in “obama” which invalidates the ballot.

Thanks for your point of view. I believe that it makes sense and the issues associated with this option may cause some additional concerns but it just might bring the issue to the forefront.

Also, it is hard to find “good help” these days. That seems par for the course.
