There’s no draft in place now. I’m not convinced that kids of draftable age have a clue or are concerned about it.

They are concerned about jobs — I see a lot of that worry (I’m a university prof.)

What I’ve really noticed is the high degree of involvement among the students in this cycle. I teach at a land-grant campus, and the students have been rather blase about elections. Not nearly so much this time, and I think 8 years of Bush league government is doing it.

I agree completely about Obama’s campaign. Campaigning isn’t governing, but the organization shines through like a searchlight.

I suspect Obama wants early voting because he saw how insanely large the primary crowds were. If it’s going to be very high then early voting helps people get it done instead of standing in line endlessly on ‘election day’.

I wonder what happened when she found out that her lovely hubby voted no on the same funding?

McCain voted no on a different bill which also cut funding, but that one HAD a timeline he didn’t support.

I’m certain they knew who vote for what. But, they’re feeling desperate, as one might expect.

You need a message that resonates with them [the young].

No draft, jobs after good schooling, peace & prosperity and a government they don’t have to worry so much about.

Idealism is great and kids generally have that (whether liberal, conservative or something else). But, as kids, they still know we need mature well-meaning intelligent people in charge. They’ve seen the Bush years, so just about anything sane will be seen as okay.

Obama is doing great and should just keep on truckin’ on as he is. The public can see McCain isn’t the best choice, even when all they see of him is the debates and he isn’t acting entirely crazy in those.

No, I think quality shows through and the public can see Obama’s campaign winning on just about every front possible.

If McCain were running in a year when his party wasn’t getting crushed by a series of calamites [sic], he might be winning this race.

Well, according to some versions of string theory there are an infinite number of alternative universes so in one of them McCain’s bound to be winning. Then again in that alternative universe Lowry’s a 14-year old girl pregnant by John McCain.

Someone on MSNBC tonight (Howard Fineman?) referred to JFK’s “Missile gap” campaign as “ancient history.”

Boy, do I feel old.

If McInsane were to win in some parallel universe (not mine, please dear Lord, I’ve survived eight years of the Dim Son), I suspect that Sarah Plain’s [sic] duties would be to check McInsane’s health status daily, do the you-die-we-fly thing on McInsane’s behalf, and hunt whatever there is to hunt in Virginia/Maryland. Whitetail deer, I’d guess.

Historically, although the vice president virtually never exercises the sole constitutional duty given the office, I can see no reason for that. Except to hone up your golf game, of course. If a vice president wanted to, she could constitutionally run the Senate. The president of the Senate controls the body’s agenda. If you control the agenda, you can swing a lot of power. If you want to. I think Sarah Plain is well aware that she’d not carry much weight in a McInsane administration, and that’s why she was talking about the constitutional authority of the office. She could make a real mess of things in the Senate if she were of a mind.

Of course, that sort of activity could result in her impeachment, too. I’m sure the Senate prefers it’s titular leader to work in somewhere other than in their chamber.
