Oh, dear. Looks like Rich Lowry‘s huffing the furniture polish again. Or maybe he just couldn’t hear the debate last night through the Sarah Palin Starbursts™ underwear he was using to wipe away the flop sweat.
If McCain were running in a year when his party wasn’t getting crushed by a series of calamites [sic], he might be winning this race.
Well, Rich, better "calamites" than catamites, right?
And damn those Democrats for having a qualified, youthful candidate in the race!
If the Nobel committee had a prize for appearing plausible, [Obama]‘d win it every time. He carries himself with confidence, he never appears flustered, and he has mastered his material. If he’s losing these debates on points (as I think he is), it doesn’t matter.
Somebody childproof the Lowry cleaning supplies closet. McCain’s campaign is circling the drain.

Aloha, Water Tiger!
“In an alternate timeline, something else could be happening right now!”
Thanks watertiger.
digg
Can’t it be both?
Heh. Rich Lowry has been huffing Draino and Cheetos dust for years. I think he has started mainlining Mountain Dew now.
Damn!
Almost had a “Leisure Guy!”
Usually you can get rid of calamites with some bug spray. But if they’re really giant calamites (like the ants in “Them,” (which were a calamity BTW) then you need flame throwers. I hope this helps.
And if my aunt had a ‘package’, she’d be my uncle.
Or maybe he just couldn’t hear the debate last night through the Sarah Palin Starbursts™ underwear he was using to wipe away the….
sorry – had to stop reading right there. I really didn’t want to see the next words…..
Dang, WT, you’re channeling Yogi Berra…! ;-)
Not sure you want to mix that phrase with a post about Rich Lowry.
I put mine on backwards, like to have the starbursts in front where I can see ‘em.
Sure if America was winning the war in Iraq if the Bush economy wasn’t exploding John McCain would be doing much better. If McCain had not supported Bush’s policies John would be doing better right now.
But Would have, Could have, Should have, won’t win an election now will it?
Didn’t want to deal with the cum stains? ;-)
watertiger! wonder if lowry has seen the sarah palin hot for vp hot sauce (be sure to check out that label)
should keep lowry occupied for a while
If moose could hunt, they’d hunt a pit bull wearing lipstick.
hey mm – that was a great springsteen diary you wrote over at ox. nice seeing ya at the lake again :)
Don’t even want to think what he might do with that.
the starbursts are supposed to be on the *back*?
whoa, is my face red….
(’course, I never thought of ‘em as *star*bursts….)
In what world did Obama lose? Oh wait the emotional voter world of course.
Too bad the economy going down triggers the survival instinct. Satisfying the survival instinct come first according to Maslow.

A shock to the system like this could realign a lot of GOPers for a generation. The FDR election gives us a pattern.
Hey, JayT, so did ya see Obama today in Indy?
Is it just me….. Palin’s voice just grates on me…… If I have to hear that B*tch speak for the next 4-16 years…… either it is immigration or suicide….
Oh, good forkin’ grief! Maybe the Lake should take up a collection and send lowry a case of the stuff….he can put that in his mouth instead of his foot for a change.
Animal activist Bridget Bardot said Phalin was an insult to pitbulls and that she was more dangerous than any animal on earth…
I could tolerate her voice if I wasn’t so offended by the things she says.
If I have to listen to for 4-16 minutes, I might do something stupid – and I’ ain’t leaving and ain’t self-destructive.
nah, dammit – no tickets left by the time Suz kicked me in the head and I went to Obama’s site to look.
Almost all of it was on MSNBC though. Pretty darned good speech.
Well, they may as while capitalize while the getting is good…
its the whole package…. its the red f*ck me shoes…. the wink wink …. ya Betcha… bull crap….. she is an actress and it is all an act…..
It’s not just you. I cannot bear to hear one syllable out of her mouth. Have stopped watching the news and/or keep the mute button handy.
My elderly mother watches “Entertainment Tonight” and it has been “all Palin, all the time” on there. I told her tonight that part of our electorate now equates voting for president with their votes for the latest “American Idol”.
how’s every one doing tonight? i hope no one is still feeling the effects of the debate bingo drinking game last nite.
Paris Hilton strikes again!
HAHAHAHAHAHA! I’d vote for Paris before I voted for McClusterfuck!
A really bad actress. Sort of low end porn actress bad.
only 4 diggs?
GOP minds are blaming the economy for John’s defeat but the do not connect the dots Bush caused the economic meltdown and McCain voted to support him.
What happens when a world view collapses? I’m thinking it might not be pretty.
I thought Suz had a bum knee…? How’d she do that? ;-)
I have an axe in the forehead headache I’ve had all day but other than that, I’m rosy, red and rarin to cut me some ‘puke ass!
>:-D
Okely-dokely. Howz the new digs? All the conveniences of the hut?
I got a blackout (toute blanche) within 10 min.
Whaddya talkin ’bout?
Just watched the video …..”my fellow prisoners” ….. Neither Palin or Megan (McCain’s daughter) caught it when he said it……. complete straight faces….
Oh, Hi, Suz! No lingering side effects here…!
Speaking of the Nobel Prize,
Martin Chalfie who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, is the 63rd Nobel Prize winner to endorse Obama.
washingtonmonthly.com
Oh, they caught it. Actors, they.
Not just you at all, katymine. Her manner of speaking is an insult to all educated Americans.
Hey, Suz, WT.
No hangover, but a great big smile.
Everybody see KO and Rachel’s take Hannity getting smoked?
Work is interfering with my reading FDL — seriously! I still haven’t caught up with the live blogging last night. And after the Daily Show, I guess it is too late!
Spoke with my 85 yr old father last evening…… He started going on about Palin not paying for rape kits…… you should of heard him go on…… really laid into the issue….. he was really upset that women were brutalized and then forced to pay for THE ONE investigation tool to catch the perp……
If only Crazy John would stop using ethnic slurs. Then I would not be modded all the time when I quote him.
I watched that and you know, it looked to me like Meghan McCain might have a bun in the oven. You don’t suppose she got an opportunity to swing Bristol’s hockey-stick up there in St. Paul, do you?
I watched it about four times, and finally saw his daughter’s eyes narrow.
Seven by my count.
Watch their faces.
538 guy on Colbert right now.
Can’t me be insulted by it too?
I agree! Bun in the oven…
He Shoots … He Scores …
Evenin’ all !
Seem to have an epidemic going on here. Wasn’t aware that was what they meant when they talked about “family values.”
Not necessarily in that order.
Evenin’ P.
Hey, Petro. Thought about you as I ate the lamb curry this evening. Good thing it reheats well on the stove top. Came home from my late seminar to a dead microwave. Just don’t make cheap appliances like they used to. Damn thing is only about 15 years old!
It’s all evident in the bustline — good grief!
See the Duggars

Some Asshat from politico said a similar thing last night … “Because McCain didn’t win, he lost !”
I guess all Right Wing Philosophers are as deep as Andrew Sullivan …

three times Straight Talk Express tried to run over the Obama’s mailbox
We know this thing is coming down to it because Obama took his gloves off and McCain took out his teeth.
I just hope the news doesn’t sour McGramp’s good mood.
Is his daughter the blond with the big b00bs standing behind him on the left? What the spit is it with this guy who seems to *have* to have one or more females propping up his back side every time he appears on the stump?
yeah, I thought they did. The audience reaction was interesting. A great big, collective, but silent “WTF”?
Well, we are dealing with the shallow end of the gene pool here.
The Lamb Curry is 15 years old ?
… sorry, a little slow after all the shots last night … *g*
ROTFLMAO
If he had men around him, his challenged verticality would show more.
He’s short, iow.
And old.
Freezes well, too. 8-P
Ya think? See #57 and 60…Hey how are you?
And ugly. And stupid. And crazy.
They should change the name of the Straight Talk Express to Here Come The Brides.
Truly a thing of beauty. I like the folks with whom Obama surrounds himself!
Video of hate talk from Strongsville, Ohio seen tonight — very scary!
Sure! Aren’t you educated??!!!
!!! Stupid brides (I’m associated with the contraceptive collection).
Itis all they have left. They cannot win on the issues. They cannot win on character (they don’t have any). All they have is hate and fear. Expect a lot more of that in coming weeks. They hope to mobilize the most troglodyte factions of “the base”. Don’t think it will work, but that is what they are shooting for.
It frees up Joe and Lindsey for fluffing duty.
Too funny!!
LMAO!
Listening to the local news from there; they never said beans about it. Neither did the Philadelphia big city news notice it, although at one point I thought they were going to play the whole segment there and just let us hear it, but no. And PBS NewsHour snoozed over it.
It’s a piece of evidence that we’ve collecting showing McCain guilty of non compus mentia inre US Presidency. Palin is not an acceptable substitute.
Nah, I came down the chute fundamentally alienated from the institutional structures of society.
Yeah, that’s Meahgan, or however the hell you spell Megan. John would have much preferred standing with Lieberliar and Graham, but wth.
Yes, I know. Ugly and shocking, and just down the road.
buchannan’s the same way over on msnbc. he insists that if only the economic disaster hadn’t happened, mcmuffin would be light years ahead of obama.
i said to mrs. skippy tonite as pat droned on the tv set, “what a terrible tragedy for the repubbblicans, to have an economic meltdown after eight years in office. a tragic coincidence.”
I didn’t recognize her without the Bottle of Beer …
Yeah, apparently Jamie Lynn Spears meets the criteria to join the campaign.
I was surprised that Rachel let him off easy when he said that …
can’t those people afford fashion consultants
Worked, though! Good for you. I have a brother like you.
Since the R convention, I’ve taken to MUTE when Pat is on — this man needs an ED med.
hehe. I just realized that there’s one (however absurdly unlikely) scenario that the unacceptable substitute becomes President Obama’s VP. 269-269 could result if Obama takes Nevada and New Hampshire, both of which he is leading in by considerable margins, and all the tossup states go to Same. The House, voting by delegations, I believe would elect Obama president. In the Senate, Darth and Hojo would annoint the rethug. Voila, Obama-Palin ‘08. ‘course the Senate would probably dump Palin for Same. In which case, Obama-McCain ‘08. Hey.. anything’s possible.
Is this true, or just NatEnq? I couldn’t tell.
Dr. Dick,
What do you teach?
It is wingnut denial. One of the stages of wingnut grief. Never can remember the exact order, but rage is coming up. That is where we hope and pray that the Secret Service and US Attorneys are doing their jobs.

Kinda makes me want to get back in the bus to the lake and start singing about bottles of beer.
She would elevate the tone of the whole campaign.

Sure, they can afford them, but look at Cindy Lou. Sorry state of affairs.
They often manage to scoop (seems like an apt term) the MSM. Could very well be accurate.

OK, she of the grey knit skin tight outfit.
As to the “how”, allowing meself a very small smirk of satisfaction in recent days based to polling numbers.

I was just looking at something:
Remote paraphasia – The substituted word is not really related to the intended word. e.g. “You forgot your lamp, I mean, umbrella.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paraphasia
Someone else brought this up today. Continuing,…
Usually, aphasias are a result of damage (lesions) to the language centres of the brain (like Broca’s area). These areas are almost always located in the left hemisphere, and in most people this is where the ability to produce and comprehend language is found. However, in a very small number of people, language ability is found in the right hemisphere. In either case, damage to these language areas can be caused by a stroke, traumatic brain injury, or other head injury. Aphasia may also develop slowly, as in the case of a brain tumor or progressive neurological disease, e.g., Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease. It may also be caused by a sudden hemorrhagic event within the brain.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphasia

I have a computer do the number crunching for me. I worry more about making sure the data are suited to the proposed number crunching … are you on the cultural or physical side?
Whatever’s handy. I’ve been doing a lot of survey design in this phase of my career.
I have said for quite a while that I thought McCain was early stage Alzheimer’s. Could be some other condition with similar symptoms, but he reminds me of my grandmother when she first started going downhill.
Cultural. I work with Native Americans, gender, and ethnicity/race. Most of my research in the past 20 years has been historically based.
Christine, speaking of fashion, are they going to crack down on Electioneering haberdashery in Cleveland on Voting Day?
I’m out, have a magical evenin’, everybody.
If y’all haven’t been by to see Susan Duquesnay Bankston recently, head on over for a visit.

If you don’t have the Dish brand, try to check it out with a friend who does. Great “Here’s your intro to Obama” stuff.
You have my sympathy. Survey design is one of the hardest things to do right and even when you think you have it right, you still get weird responses.
I’ve seen speculation that the reason Sarah Plain [sic] is so hot to be VP (an office aptly described as not worth a bucket of warm spit) is that she’s sure McInsane can’t serve out a term.
g’nite ratfood (and any other leaving sleepy pup i may have missed)

Hey Suz, Hi, I’m waiting for Morpheus
Would not surprise me a bit. That is one opportunistic little barracuda.
i am surprised you are still awake, ellie – nice having ya here on the dark side
I’m pretty sure he won’t last one term either, by hook or by croup
Think I will join the exodus. Long day today. Made my theory seminar (and by extension, me) read Chomsky, Levi-Strauss, and Bourdieu today. That shit makes my head hurt.
Don’t you know it. And it’s getting worse. Portable cell numbers and folks moving from landlines to cells exclusively are screwing things up now and it’s only going to get worse.
Look for Gallup (and a bunch of others) to have egg on their faces when this election is all over.
nite Doc.
So! are the creatures settling in well? Bailey still givin’ you the cold shoulder?
Rich Dowry has Starburst underwear?!? Perfect place for his Laffy Taffy!

G’night Dr. D

I think Morpheus is here,
So I too bid adieu.
Oooh! Can I choose a hat? Am I missing a point?
Look for Gallup (and a bunch of others) to have egg on their faces when this election is all over.
From which direction? (he asked fearfully)
g’nite dr d
ellie, bailey only gave me the cold shoulder at the vacation rental – she has settled in here very nicely. i think her reaction was like mine – it felt like home right away.
token is making friends with bailey the dog, the downstairs australian shepard. bailey the dog tries to herd token and token tries not to be herded. pretty funny :)
g’nite ellie
Saw Glen Beck tonight. “Obama should be winning by 20 points. People don’t trust him.”
Ohio voting is so corrupt — this must be related.
can you wear your Obama hat to the poll without being accused of electioneering?
In my County we can; but in Montgomery County outside of Philly, they’re gonna crack down on it and send people home to change.
yano when they are hard up for excuses when they use that ole ‘not winning by enough’ line.
My eyelids are failing, they’re falling
see ya pups tomorrow
Bright and early.
No, I could not. We were told to remove all campaign signs, pins, clothing. Same for 2006, which was a shock to me.
Nite Elliott.
Where in Montgomery County are you? My in-laws live in Schwenksville, PA.
i don’t think it’s true anymore to say the office of VP isn’t worth a bucket of warm piss. amybe when james nance gartner was vp. but the job changed with fritz mondale and some vp’s have been given greater responsibility since. biden will be an active vp w/ alot of responsibility, i think.
how far ahead does he have to get before they stop? what was it 11 points in today’s gallup tracking poll? and those red states that may possibly go blue– va, fl, co, nv, oh. In (???), mo(???).
What up, suze? I saw Cindy opened her yap today. aaaaaggggghhhhhhhhh! Somebody gotta help me here or I’m gonna get moderated.
Obama has the best ground game I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been following elections since Johnson-Goldwater in 1964.
Most polling outfits have switched over to their likely-voter models. These vary from company to company, but some things are consistent. One of the consistent things is that they downweight 18-25 (or even 30) year olds. Historically, young adults are much less likely to vote.
Now, add to that the move from land-lines to cell-phones. The undergrads I teach virtually all have cell phones, less than 10% have a land line. This doesn’t sound like anything, except that random digit dial surveys usually exclude cell prefixes. If you are contacted for a political poll on your cell, you can bet that when you registered to vote you gave the SecState your cell number as your primary contact AND that it’s an internal poll. They buy the voter lists from the SecState so they know they’re talking to registered voters. Gallup, etc don’t bother.
What all this means is that the biggies are not able to reach young adults efficiently. They ought to be (but to the best of my knowledge are not) reweighting those they can reach. And their likely voter models downweight the fraction that they can reach.
If Obama’s GOTV effort is effective (and there is every reason to believe it will be) he’s going blow away all the survey margins. It could be a landslide, with Obama sweeping all of the so-called tossup states and stealing a few ‘lean McCain’ places.
Nite Ellie, I’m fading fast and I just got here. I will try to stay up for a few.
they will not stop – just look at how they hounded clinton
its all they know how to do – they sure as hell dont know how to govern
Hey bfl
Cindy should keep on yapping. She takes her coaching better the ‘Ni’ and her delivery puts her to shame.
Let’er rip.
Did anyone see Michelle Obama on larry king tonight? Only caught part of a rerun but she did a fantastic job! Could gush on but will leave it at that.
Saw Glen Beck tonight. “Obama should be winning by 20 points. People don’t trust him.”
So do they trust McBush…? Gotta love their logic…! ;-)
do ya think that is because he is using new media – cellphones, text messages, etc to reach the younger voter?
The vice-president has precisely those duties delegated by the president. If you’re the VP and you’re good buddies with the President, then maybe it’s worth something.
Otherwise, you call the WH in the morning to make sure the President’s temperature is still in the neighborhood of 98 F. Once you’ve confirmed that, go to Burning Tree and play golf.
Of course, it does come with a reasonably nice house now.
Now THAT’S some funny stuff, hoss! *G*
Latest attack on Obama:
He is using an ‘ostentatiously exotic’ pronunciation of ‘Pakistan’.
Nevermind that is the way the Pakistanis pronounce it. And Gen David Petraus.
Oh well, when ya got nuthin’…
I think that’s part of it. Certainly cells and texting is the way to reach that age group. But reaching them is only part of it. You need a message that resonates with them.
I think another part of it is Obama’s idealism. I think another part of it is an adverse reaction to 8 years of Incurious George, the Dim Son.
Hiya Margot! Still up?
very interesting – thanks.
I think he’s got a good shot here in Indiana.
I voted today, and there was a pretty healthy number of people there at 2:00 in the afternoon. Mostly people of color – maybe afraid of caging or other later shenanigans – I dunno.
Oh, and I
stolehave 7 “I Voted!” stickers to wear on the 4th.heh.
Right – Paw-key-stahn…
McCheese did it all last night, too!
“Is it just me….. Palin’s voice just grates on me……”
It’s not just you. The first time I heard Palin’s voice, I thought, “Wha…?”
And I thought, this is not a voice that sounds presidential. Hilary, DiFi, lotsa women in Congress have voices that one could hear as presidential. Not Palin’s. I think that alone may account for some of the decline in Palin’s polls. And that was before Tina Fey.
Bob in HI
My experience as well, on Monday here in Cleveland.
That’s a small factor, but, truly, the passion is there for Obama and merely stuffed shirts going through the motions of a campaign on McBush’s part…!
If we can get more people to ignore Conglomerate Media and use New Media sources like FDL, then they can howl all they want and it won’t matter. It only worked during the Clinton years because of the Noize Machine’s purposeful legitimizing of the constant stream of made-up claims (with one notable exception out of hundreds).
If we had an actual Press in the BigMedia, the modern-day Repubs would be a fringe group.
Hi Chris, sstill up, trying really hard to stay awake.
McCheese did it all last night, too!

It’s the techie thing yes, but there is an excellent piece on the subject onver on HuffPo today on the mechanics of his ‘organizing the ground game’. It’s truly a fantastic piece of work – basically recruiting ‘teams’ of people who volunteer to do what they do best and then training the daylights out of them, and then turning them loose to do what they do best.
As the author, Zack Exley said,”this is what executive experience looks like”. As in community organizing!

I know, me too. I’ve just turned into such a political junkie.
late late nite upstairs
Ha Ha Ha! Actually yes! I very nice lady gave us tons!
Mahalo, Larue, glad to see some people appreciate my wit…! *g*
I wonder what happened when she found out that her lovely hubby voted no on the same funding?
Hmmm, my response to 178 should be to jayt at 177!
don’t forget the funerals in far flung shitholes all over the world. you’re right. i’m just saying that since mondale, presidents are delegating more stuff to do to the VP; except Quayle.
Obama is pushing early voting hard everywhere it’s available.
It makes sense to do so. That’s an irrevocable vote in the bag, and it avoids the election-day hassles.
Mrs BC and I will vote election day, because it’s our habit and because our county clerk’s office has been known to pull some shenanigans with early ballots, shredding them prior to the election (they were spoiled ballots, honestly, I wouldn’t lie…) So we’ll vote election day, and trust the goddam Diebold scanner reads our ballots correctly.
I really want a 2% hand audit confirmation of those things, but people think I’m nuts.
The series of calamites that is beating McCain and his party is the past eight years of the Bush administration. That would be more than even a competent campaign could overcome.
Hubby Tawd’s voice isn’t much better:

Voting early helps with the ground game too, every early vote means a phone call or door knock that can go somewhere else – helps with resources and planning.
I think they were desperately trying to keep a straight face and hoping that no one noticed.
Bob in HI
If McInsane were to win in some parallel universe (not mine, please dear Lord, I’ve survived eight years of the Dim Son), I suspect that Sarah Plain’s [sic] duties would be to check McInsane’s health status daily, do the you-die-we-fly thing on McInsane’s behalf, and hunt whatever there is to hunt in Virginia/Maryland. Whitetail deer, I’d guess.
Historically, although the vice president virtually never exercises the sole constitutional duty given the office, I can see no reason for that. Except to hone up your golf game, of course. If a vice president wanted to, she could constitutionally run the Senate. The president of the Senate controls the body’s agenda. If you control the agenda, you can swing a lot of power. If you want to. I think Sarah Plain is well aware that she’d not carry much weight in a McInsane administration, and that’s why she was talking about the constitutional authority of the office. She could make a real mess of things in the Senate if she were of a mind.
Of course, that sort of activity could result in her impeachment, too. I’m sure the Senate prefers it’s titular leader to work in somewhere other than in their chamber.
Someone on MSNBC tonight (Howard Fineman?) referred to JFK’s “Missile gap” campaign as “ancient history.”
Boy, do I feel old.

Hey, BCt,
Do you know splines and INKNOTS? Categorical principal components analysis? I need some help.
Bob in HI
Well, according to some versions of string theory there are an infinite number of alternative universes so in one of them McCain’s bound to be winning. Then again in that alternative universe Lowry’s a 14-year old girl pregnant by John McCain.
Enough to discuss them quasi-intelligently, Bob. What’s up?
FFin’ eh?
No draft, jobs after good schooling, peace & prosperity and a government they don’t have to worry so much about.
Idealism is great and kids generally have that (whether liberal, conservative or something else). But, as kids, they still know we need mature well-meaning intelligent people in charge. They’ve seen the Bush years, so just about anything sane will be seen as okay.
Obama is doing great and should just keep on truckin’ on as he is. The public can see McCain isn’t the best choice, even when all they see of him is the debates and he isn’t acting entirely crazy in those.
No, I think quality shows through and the public can see Obama’s campaign winning on just about every front possible.
McCain voted no on a different bill which also cut funding, but that one HAD a timeline he didn’t support.
I’m certain they knew who vote for what. But, they’re feeling desperate, as one might expect.
I suspect Obama wants early voting because he saw how insanely large the primary crowds were. If it’s going to be very high then early voting helps people get it done instead of standing in line endlessly on ‘election day’.
There’s no draft in place now. I’m not convinced that kids of draftable age have a clue or are concerned about it.
They are concerned about jobs — I see a lot of that worry (I’m a university prof.)
What I’ve really noticed is the high degree of involvement among the students in this cycle. I teach at a land-grant campus, and the students have been rather blase about elections. Not nearly so much this time, and I think 8 years of Bush league government is doing it.
I agree completely about Obama’s campaign. Campaigning isn’t governing, but the organization shines through like a searchlight.
