What does a spending freeze mean? Is it that there will be no cost of living increases for Social Security recipients, Military personnel, Civil servants, etc.

I have growing respect for Obama- first for the way he handled his campaign in the primary- realizing that the caucus states represent a neglected opportunity and capitalizing on them- now he has taken an impressive lead against the lyin gooper machine. He has invested millions on ‘the ground’- an investment that we may not be able to fully evaluate until election day- but if he played that as cleverly as he did the caucus states- we may be looking at President Obama.

My own sister is one of the rabid right and, I’m sorry to say, I half hope she loses her house in this mortgage crisis (because she keeps acting as an apologist for Wall Street even though she will NEVER be even close to rich), loses her job because of the credit crunch, and then has to suck at the Federal teat just to get by (she wants to kill off the social safety net, give tax cuts to the rich, etc). She IS a perfect example of the members of the GOP base that literally and rabidly vote against their own best interests and then very angrily blame the left for their problems.
She is also a rabid Palin supporter (she’s a one-issue voter: abortion) and poo-poos ANY hints of racism (calling it all “PC bullshit”) that come from the Palin/GOP attacks on Obama or even black journalists at the rallies (”Sit down boy!”).

OT, but in listening to Bernanke today, he mentioned oil has come down, but who knows, it may go back up again.

As if the fluctuation in price is like the wind blowing, or the flight of a butterfly.

The argument concerning whether or not speculation was involved in the rise and fall of the price of oil this year I would hope is now moot.

When oil rose to $147 a barrel, China and India’s consumption didn’t increase 50% from last year; now that it’s back down to $90, consumption hasn’t gone down 40% in two months.

Hedge funds drove prices up and they are now coming down because they can’t borrow 40 to 1 anymore.

Kinda simple, and Bernanke should acknowledge that.

Down in Clearwater Florida yesterday the crowd verbally abused an African America soundman after Palin made statements about her words being twisted… “N*****” they shouted at the guy simply holding a boom mike. “Sit down, BOY”.

Seems that the “base” doesn’t want what they are saying observed by anyone that they think might pass those events on to those outside. Jes’ keepin’ their l’il ol racism an inbred family secret.

OK as it fits into her understanding of politics – Republicans represent all that is good and true and noble and right-thinging people everywhere, but sadly can only win elections by pandering to ignorance, fear and division. It’s the cross she bears.

I also hopes he nails McCain to his support for “privatization” of Social Security…points out that all those funds that YOUNGER workers would have had invested by corporate financial houses would be gutted in the stock market right now. And that privatization would have accelerated the problems faced by SSI to the point where the fund would have needed a trillion dollar bailout in 2018 just to keep elderly retirees in benefits.

He also should point out that the foreclosure crisis is much more widespread than the Feds have disclosed…that rural foreclosures have been vastly underestimated. “Something that anyone living in rural America actually could see happening to their friends and neighbors, but that they never heard the ‘experts’ talking about.”

He needs to use a lot of “your neighbors and friends”, “your family”, “your Mom and Dad”, “your kids” – even more than his use of Main Street (which is a bit sterile IMO). “The cafe run by the couple down the street”, “the factory that hires local kids just out of high school”, make everything local. That’s where Clinton was so great in these types of debates. Obama can do it too.

Oil has come down BECAUSE OF the predicted drop in industrial production globally as the world enters into a recession (or potential DEPRESSION). Does Bernanke actually believe that suddenly there is a massive production increase, or something? The speculators are jumping from oil to…well, maybe home-protection devices (i.e. guns)…simply because the economy is tankin’.

And he’s cheering this?

First off, I didn’t realize that McCain had line-item authority…wasn’t that declared Unconstitutional back in the Clinton era? I thought that it was Congress that passed spending bills and the Executive Branch was to implement them to the best of their abilities.I guess this must be something to do with Palin’s newly discovered “Fourth Branch” powers.
