So, ok, clearly Obama won again. We don’t even need to see the polls to know that. He comes across as president already, while John McCain comes across as an angry doddering old man.
Here’s what I don’t understand. Essentially McCain made the same sort of mistakes he made last time. Not friendly enough, not calm, awful body language and so on. Not a statesman. Not a reasuring elder who’s seen it all and who can be trusted to deal with it now.
I don’t believe that his handlers don’t know this. I don’t believe they didn’t know this after the first debate. It was dead clear. So, does John McCain not know this? Are they not able to tell it to him? Does he not listen? Why do they not have someone coaching him? Ditch some campaign appearances and spend hours working on his body language, his voice tone and give him answers that are statesmanlike.
Or is John "Maverick" McCain too angry to listen? Too frazzled, too tired, too unable to make a change from a game plan that clearly isn’t working. Is it the campaign? Or is it him?
Either way, it’s actually kind of sad. What I see in John McCain is an old tired man whose anger doesn’t just come from being behind but from having worked beyond capacity for too long. He doesn’t have Obama’s stamina, nor does he have the sense Obama had in taking a week’s holiday to recharge. The best thing that the McCain campaign could do now is to come up with some reason to give him the better part of 3 days off. Let Palin campaign for him, she pretty much does anyway. Let him recover.
I doubt it would matter to the end result, but at least we might not be treated to Obama coolly dismantling what amounts to a punch-drunk McCain who can neither think nor speak straight.

Dayam, how many debate threads are there…? ;-)
CNN poll on winner of tonights debate
Obama 84%
McSame 13%
No clear winner 3 %
He is a very angry man. You can see the rage in his eyes. A ‘how dare you’ or ‘who do you think you are’ demeanor
n + 1
Ian, this is going to sound mean and snarky, but I mean it literally:
McCain is old. He’s long been a legend in his own mind, and that’s where he lives. He’s memorized a ton of bits and bites over the years, and they fall easily out of his mouth.
His handlers have known all along he was going to lose — how to tell? Look and see what plans they’ve made for the next few years.
McCain is a placeholder, baby.
Obama cheated … his people hid McCain’s Barbecue & Cap …
I think McCain knows his last, best chance to be President of These United States is gone, gone, gone.
And he’s angry about it. He practically sneered ‘that one’ at Obama.
He’s done — stick a thermometer in him.
Does he not listen?
No – this is another edition of Simple Answers…..
and his Costco card
Ian, he’s a maverick. That coaching, and body language, and breath training, voice coaching — that’s business as usual in Warshington. In other words, McCain has no respect for all that stuff.
What he hadn’t counted on in a joint Town Hall format was the other fellow — the guy he called “that one.”
Or The One as they call Obama within the McCain campaign.
Any one else think the “THAT one” kind reflected McCain’s whole disparaging ‘tude about Obama. The not looking at him, the wandering around while Obama speaks, the interruptions, the effort to get the last word in.
I suspect that even with rest (and I seem to remember that they are limiting McCain’s appearances already?) we would see the same angry old man. He knows he’s losing and like the punch drunk (great image Ian!) he will flail all the way to the canvas.
My guess is that the R’s know this is lost and are just seeing if they can generate more rage and discord to keep the country off balance until they can run Petraeus.
yep. i had missed that initially. wow, he cannot contain his disdain for obama
It’s his personality. He is old, on abt 6 different drugs from his old age pain and old war wounds. Why would any one in their 70’s think it was a good thing to run for presidency? Just that decission there is telling.
Time for the McTillerman to toddle off into the sunset.
Absolutely. Remember that McSame is a child of the 50s, pre-civil rights era. I’m sure he tries, God bless him … but he is what he is.
That one!
Dayammmm…ASIAN Stock Markets are going down between 4-6%. Here we go again ;-(
He’s the old guy who’s seen it all, thinks he’s put his time in, that he should get it on right, and some guy who is wet behind the ears is taking it from him. I’m sure in his head the mantra is “why can’t people see how shallow Obama is, he’s just a kid! How can I be losing to, to that!”
McMiniMe
I’m ain’t drunk, I’m jes’ drinkin’!
“My Friends!” I got drunk on that alone!
Interesting.
I thought that they took McCain to Sedona to relax before the debate…it looked more like he went to Joshua Tree.
His pacing around the room was supposed to demonstrate energy but it made him look shifty and towards the end, tired and old
Kudos to all the folks behind the scenes for your work tonight (and in preparation); the Lake was smooth as silk for all the heavy traffic. Bodes *really* well for November 4. :-))) Y’all da best!!!
Hong Kong is playing catch up … closed yesterday for a holiday …
That video is the fuckin’greatest!
Fox has Senator McCain 81%, Senator Obama 19% and Drudge has MCCAIN 69%, OBAMA 27%…
mr said he was shuffling about.
Is it over? Can I come out now?
Hmm, imagine the scene with McCain and his advisors right about now.
“Goddamit! I’m not gonna fucking lose this thing to that
ni**erone! You guys better think of something and think of something fast, goddamit!”Pathetic. Just. Pathetic.
so simple,so true
but he envisions himself as the second comming of the emperor NAPOLEAN…told his son so
McCain actually did appear to stagger off at the end.
Boy, it was so great and stimulating that I literally slept through the last 1/2 hour of the debate.
Wolcott really hits it I think:
Ian !
What’s playing in his head is, “Hey, this strategy worked for Dumbya, why ain’t it working for me ?”
Some Tea for McTillerman?
They must have their own special samples.
A serious “Old Man Shouts At Cloud” 90 minute interlude in the life of John McGain…
Did anyone else listen to his litany of “service” and feel like he was saying “Goddamit, I’m entitled to this fucking job!!!” ?
He IS old and tired. You simply don’t have a lot of energy at his age and he never should have run. He has, however, assisted in destroying the Rs. That’s okay with me.
… only if you bring some Lamb curry …
Let’s be careful, pups.
Cindy better go back to SAN DIEGO home methinks
Please Digg this post!
I do not think that the racist overtones of this campaign are artifice and strategy.
That’s a self-selected sample, CT.
It’s meaningless. Less than meaningless. If we wanted to, we could flood them next week and switch it.
what a surprise!
Thanks, duly noted.
And thank you for your service. :-)
Wasn’t it just? I cracked up, but had tears in my eyes at the end.
Yes, “that one”…that’s what sealed it for me.
Not the vote, I’m already voting for Obama. It sealed my opinion that McC. is a fucking barbarian.
Ooooo. Is there a link to the Napoleon comment? At least his shoulder injury wouldn’t impede his putting his hand in his jacket.
http://www.napoleon.org/en/pop…..ype=object
I agree but rather than angry it makes him grumpy. He blamed minorities for the economic crisis. Said he would cut Medicare and Social Security. Make people pay more for healthcare. Keep tax cuts for the wealthy. And still loves the war in Iraq.
His foreign policy reminds me of the line that if all you have is a hammer every problem looks like a nail. Except with McCain, every foreign policy issue looks like Vietnam all over again.
McCain acts like he deployed troops and directed battle. Hell! He graduated from Annapolis without distinction. He flew a jet, poorly! Where the F### does he get off with claiming all this military experience and “being ready to lead?”
I don’t get it.
You dirty Musselman jihadiest sympathiser!
Halperin gives win to Obama. But Drudge poll has it more than 2-to-1 for McOld. While Fox has it 4-to-1 for Senator Senior.
Let’s call it a draw.
it’s a shame
dugg
Have some in the freezer as a matter of fact. Was saving it for dinner tomorrow after my 35 seminar, but ….
I’m going to vote for change.
Because after Bush that is all I am going to have left in my pocket.
LOL,707….snort choke sneeeeeeeeeeeeeeze
Hot diggity DUGG!

From Andrew Sullivan
“All I can say is that, simply on terms of substance, clarity, empathy, style and authority, this has not just been an Obama victory. It has been a wipe-out.It has been about as big a wipe-out as I can remember in a presidential debate. It reminds me of the 1992 Clinton-Perot-Bush debate. I don’t really see how the McCain campaign survives this.”
Well, that, plus refusing to shake Obama’s hand after the “debate” was over.
Ya must know that it’s all the Kool Aid enthusiasts… Startling to see such good #’s for Obama, considering the gene pool…! ;-)
Meanwhile in NH, the governor’s race has turned into a barn burner.
NH-Gov (Saint Anselm College): (D)Lynch 73, (R)Kenney 7
I can smell the smoke from here.

What I find more annoying than “my friend” is “I know how to do that”.
It reminds me of the saying that we judge ourselves by what we believe we’re capable of, others judge us by what we’ve acomplished.
Crash and burn time, y’all. No better place to be than the Lake for an evening like this. :-)
Well stated.
Difficult to watch, especially with pit-bull Palin spinning out of control.
Odd how many of the rich celebrity corporate pundits are calling it a “draw” when many of the polling organizations are saying the results show Obama the clear winner.
I also have a sadness about how McCain’s age is showing in a way that makes him look pathetic, rather than a wise elder. It makes me sad to see a person limping about, and having the creaks and problems of a body failing him. Sad at the thought of many such older people who should not be discounted because of an old body, but who are. It’s brutal.
But reading about his youth and his middle age in the Rolling Stone article, reading about his wife Carol, dulls my compassion for THIS one.
What is McCain thinking? What a dolt!
*waving g’nite to the leaving sleepy pups*
McTurdinthepunchbowl seems to pretty much have slit his own throat here.
You forgot Commie Pinko Faggot…
me too
I’m new to this site, what is upstairs?
Is there lipstick on that McTurd?

Those are examples of where “consider the source” is appropriate.
And saw the ghost of Gram Parsons.
Sullivan is a pompous *ss … tried to pooh pooh Naomi Klein on Realtime, without any real facts.
I don’t know how Naomi kept her cool …
I’m going out canvassing for Obama later this week and I’ll be sure to make those points.
Never try to separate a pundit’s views from the paycheck they are dependent upon.
G’nite all. Thanks for the company. Colbert awaits.
Loo,
It’s really difficult to think when you’re on benzodiazapenes (Valium and her lovely cousins…)
A new article listed at the top of the home page of firedoglake. Because the new one appears above the one you are currently on, it is “upstairs.”
You presume facts not in evidence.
He obviously doesn’t have anyone who can be frank with him
That was obvious from that incredibly bad call on suspending his campaign. I can’t imagine that idea coming from anyone in that campaign but the candidate. My point is not that it was an incredibly narcissistic response to the credit crisis. We’ve let the presidency grow so beyond human scale that a raging narcissism and an outsized view of one’s place in the universe is almost a job requirement. But precisely because we’re only going to get presidents, and candidates for that office, who almost have to imagine that every event of great import really is all about them, these folks really need to surround themselves with at least a few people who will provide a little reality-testing for them when the narcissism gets out of hand and dictates dumb strategies.
They have done this on all the debates. You have to remember that these pundits are paid to get it wrong. That’s how they became successful and rich.
Silver from http://www.fivethirtyeight.com is on Colbert tonight!
Did anyone else listen to his litany of “service” and feel like he was saying “Goddamit, I’m entitled to this fucking job!!!” ?
I’m only disappointed that nobody asked McSame about his purported ’stellar’ ratings with all the Vet groups… A missed opportunity…!
One of the multitude of things about McCain that bugs me is how he keeps touting our “success” in Iraq but clearly has no intention of leaving. Seems to me that any reasonable definition of “success” should include packing up and going home.
It just means refreshing.
hi and welcome
upstairs means a new post has been posted. if there is not a link included, look down at the bottom of the page below the submit comments box and you will see a link on the left and one on the right. left is downstairs (old thread) and right is upstairs (new thread)
“upstairs” refers to the new post atop the current one.
(Hope that made sense….)
And welcome!
Actually, I am the Commie Pinko. You just cited to a known terrorist sympathizing Musselman traitorous convert.
And the last debate is going to be horrific because he is going to know he’s lost it and well, I guess he will lose it.
I am afraid to look.
I find people who constantly tell me how great they are and how much they have done to be insufferable.
-G
CNN talking about the unpredictable race factor + Palin playing a really ugly theme around that. Jeeeez. But can be neutralized by the youth vote. Someone should gag that woman.
Aloha, welcome to the Lake! It means there is a new post ‘upstairs’…! ;-)
McCain has the best government health care available. Too bad the same can’t be said for all the elderly in America. He’s beginning to remind me of William Jennings Bryan after the Scopes Trial. After that trial Bryan was a broken man.
Upton Sinclair absolutely nailed this one.
Say, what?
“Halperin gives win to Obama. But Drudge poll has it more than 2-to-1 for McOld. While Fox has it 4-to-1 for Senator Senior.”
Well look at it this way…that means that McCain is losing between 20%-35% of his core constituency. No one reads Drudge or would run off to it after the debate unless they were an idiot. And those that would watch Fox for coverage of the debate…yikes. The fact that Obama got anyone saying he won the debate on those sites is pretty miraculous.
Night solai.
$100 to the charity of Jane’s choice if the next moderator asks McCain what “victory” is/looks like in Iraq. Was it deposing Saddam? Was it establishing a post-Saddam government? Was it bringing peace to Iraq?
Please, let me know why we’re spending all this money ‘in victory’?
Mrs. Greenspan brought in to give the
old folks’McCain perception.Back to business as usual for her.
shit, she was showing some promise there for a while….
More good news for Obama…Karl Rove said McCain did great!
boa noite Solai
I am actually a bit surprised he did not lose it tonight.
My guess is that he knows Obama’s not shallow, but that he’s incensed he’s losing to black guy.
So true. No answers.
People keep expecting McCain to blow a gasket but I don’t believe it will happen. I’m sure he’s wound up and pissed off and I certainly wouldn’t want to be a member of his staff right now but I don’t expect him to throw a public tantrum. I thought at the end of the debate he just looked tired. I could feel a little sorry for him if he wasn’t a complete asshole.
That McBatshitcrazy was actually thinking.
An awesome clip.
Sure you do. It’s the usual – keep repeating the lie often enough and the rubes will buy it.
FWIW, I thought the exact same thing when I heard him say that. I wasyelling–”you flew a plane fer Chrissake!”
That and he just really resents that anyone is seriously challenging him for a job he feels is his by some sort of arcane divine right.
watertiger upstairs
thank you…
Sounds like Rove is still using the 2006 math.
”you flew a plane very badly fer Chrissake!”
There. All fixed.
Republican narratives aren’t meant to withstand analysis. They gain their power by being repeated, often. If the surge succeeded we should be able to leave. If we are told we must stay, then the surge did not succeed. The Republicans tell us without missing a beat that the surge was a success and so we must stay. It’s a logical contradiction so they ignore it.
I can hardly wait for the analysis of this… (loving KO and Rachel!)
Xanax (Alprazolam) makes it tough to blow a gasket. I’m sure that McSame is doped…
The panel who are voting for McCain, must be rich…or, really really ignorant or racist. My guess is racist.
thank you ctuttle
yup ,but it kills short term memory
LOL! Thanks.
has to show mom he is bettert than dad…paging Dr. Freud
Great page with lots of great numbers for Obama.
Exactly his mindset. Perhaps his statement “that one” was a substitute for his thought – “one of those.” Even worse.
And how could you tell McSame’s short-term memory was affected?
And as far as the Oedipal Text goes, we’ve already got a Preznit who wants to replace Daddy in Mommy’s heart. We ought not repeat that mistake.
I live in Joshua Tree. McKrusty wouldn’t be welcome here. Nor would most returdlicans.
they are much the same
Of course he’s a fool but he’s a right wing fool and other right wingers read what he has to say.
the issue persists – who will arrest the manipulation of the voting?
unless that is accomplished, the reptillians will remain incumbent.
and you must ask, why do the demtillians refuse to address this issue?
John McCain is a tight-assed, angry, punch-drunk old man. He is what he is, which includes being unable to listen to advisers or change his demeanor, just as he’s unable to forget his anger even for a moment, when the cameras are rolling, and he’s expected to shake hands after the debate. Grace, much less under pressure, is not a characteristic he possesses. One reason, among many I imagine, why he didn’t make admiral and why he should never make the White House.
What you see is what you get with Mr. McCain. Despite his enormous capacity to deliver the bald-faced lie, he is unable to make his body language conform to his intended message. No wonder he’s addicted to craps in Vegas; at cards, the pros would take him to the cleaners.
Yes of course I knoow the answer…I have to save something for next time besides POW.
The “that one” is just a forecast of what the McCain-Palin campaign will unleash in terms of barely disguised racism during the last four weeks of the campaign. Look for more references to Wright from Palin, and Wright to appear in McCain’s TV ads in the red states. Wright will show up briefly at first, and then for ever longer durations as the days dwindle down to election day. Racism is the only chance McCain has left to pull out the Bush red states. Hopefully it will backfire and drive even more people to vote against McCain. We don’t need to go back to where we were in the 1960s.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKVBq4VbC6w
mccain’s BOMB IRAN…
McCain would be about 2000% better off if he went to Joshua Tree.
For the next two weeks or so.
