pups!
My fave Bowie album and tune!
Suzanne!
Got a book about the Savings & Loan debacle today. $500 billion dollar bailout by who? President H.W. Bush. I was so stunned reading that while in the library parking lot I leaned against my car and started reading.
Honest to Gawd! I had a dream about David Bowie last night. Totally, totally strange ‘cuz I am NOT a David Bowie fan.
judas priest – what book?
…turn and face the strange… Chchchanges…! ;-)
So nice, thanks!
i was looking for a video that reflected the debate – dayam hard to do ahead of time – after the debate i had a duh! moment and remembered this tune.
Hang on
Mr. CE and I fell in love with this song. TMI, sorry!
is everyone planning on getting one of those i’m voting for that guy tshirts?
or was it that one? dayam, its been a busy night.
“Who Robbed America?: A Citizens Guide to the Savings & Loan Scandal”
Michael Waldman (& the staff of Public Citizen’s Congress Watch)
Introduction by Ralph Nader. (1990)
Digg this and Digg it now!
Oh, and I’m not a Judas Priest fan either.
dugg and thanks neuro
i’m not a fan of theirs either but its more police than what i used to say
I think we should have a contest to fill in the blank in the quote from McCain:
“that _____!”
muslim? terrorist? black man? guy whose guts I hate?
John McCain would not Shake Obama’s hand but his wife did John might be a racist.
I forgot did John shake Bush’s hand after Bush and Rove said those mean things about John fathering a black baby? I do know that John hugged Bush later!
Is Obama worse than Karl in his attacks on McCain? Has Obama been anything less than infuriatingly respectful of John McCain?
Why won’t John look at Obama? Is he that afraid of loosing his temper?
Cindy shook Obama’s hand when John would not, lets forget racism lets say John just really really does not like Obama.
Girls who are nice to or shake someones hand that their husband or boyfriend won’t shake with…after they have been humiliated in the bar, never mind on National TV by loosing a second debate tend to get it when they go home.
I’m worried I’ve seen that play to often.
does it cover the lincoln saving (keating) mess?
on second thought, let’s not. that could get pretty ugly.
but I do wonder what McVenom was thinking…
hahahaha
CSpan showing video of Barack & Michelle Obama’s charming post debate meet and greet (and photo opportunity) with audience. Small wonder McVain & Cindy high-tailed it off the stage in record time.
John has a secret plan to end the war. John has a secret plan to save the economy. I wonder why John won’t tell Bush, or us?
Yeah – Chapter 4. Chapter 5 – the Bush Bailout
They shook hands after the debate. ABC has it on tape.
McBush and Mrs. McBush know that this thing’s all but over- and they have to go through the motions for four more weeks—must be depressing.
If I may simply point out?: The very absolute best that the R ticket can possibly do debates-wise is in 1 out of 4. And I very much doubt they’ll get that much.
Heh heh heh.
Dayam, I’m still a Nader fan, I did vote for him in ‘00 and ‘04… Relax, folks, I’m in a solidly blue state so I could vote my conscience rather than the lesser of two evils… However, I’ve already caucused for Obama and will vote for him… Despite his taking the fatal shift to the center… I’m still licking the wounds from his FISA and Bailout votes…!
Maybe John needed some anger meds stat!
Seems amazing that such a monumental mistake could be made.
i think you pretty much covered the obvious ones – he’s such a dinosaur – stuck in the past and unable to lead us into the future.
npb! how’s my plants?
didja see that mcgeezer and wife came back in about 5 minutes after bo had been working the room – too little too late.
don’t forget his secret plan to “get” bin Laden, which he has been concealing from the U.S. military for the past seven years…
Ok then I’m calling it John is a racist! There is noway John could say that Obama is less qualified to be President than Bush.
Or that Obama has treated John worse than Bush and Karl Rove did.
Hey, Sweetie! I’d posted downstairs McSame’s ‘handshake’, or rather, the lack of…
I could hear McBush creaking as he lumbered around the floor- looking more like Lurch than the president of the United States….as I have said before- he’s too fuckin old to be president
I don’t get that! What a perfect opportunity for McCain, but nothing speaks like elitism to not bother sticking around – and FEAR. Truthfully, I’ve had to warm to Obama. But now, Michelle; she’s a totally different matter. I saw her on CSPAN in the very beginning of the presidential races with other wives and she was so damned sincerely gracious to Fred’s wife, I was thunderstruck.
i wudda given what is left of my left tit if obama had called him on that tonight.
Space Odyssey David Bowie C festival. Major Tom to Ground control take your protien pill and put your helmet on. Octave highe Major Tom…
Oh, well then. I mean, as long as he has a plan. I definitely trust him to know with absolute certainty that it will work without fail, and also to pull it off. Oh yeppers on that, youbetcha.
McCain IS a racist. Use whatever derogatory name for any minority group you can think of and put them all in the blank. He also hates women. Insert derogatory names for them as well. Then add the F-bomb and any more really nice expletives you can think of and put all of that in there and you will see why McCain is so angry. He cannot stand to be in the same room with this _____ let alone the fact that the _____ is cleaning his clock.
By the way, ‘that one’ is a racist dog-whistle. Don’t think all those nice white folks from Tennessee don’t get it. Along with those nice African-Americans. Especially the two that he had to answer their very good and sensible questions.
Dang I knew I forgot something. The Dems really have to go over this secret plan issue.
Here’s what’s on my mind about the debate tonight. I’m surprised that Obama didn’t point out the very obvious flaw in McStain’s plan to give a $5000 tax credit for health care. Family health insurance costs about $12,000 a year, of which the employer pays approximately half, and the employee pays the other half. $6,000 each, right? McStain gives the $5,000 check directly to the Insurance Co, trying to convince us that with the $6,000 for the employer, and the $6,000 from the worker, and the $5,000 from McStain, the worker will now have effectively $17,000 with which to get an even better policy. But any chimp can see that what is bound to happen is that with the $5,000 going directly to the Insurance Co, what is bound to happen is that the Employer will be relieved of the need to kick in their half (the $6,000) of the premiums, and the worker will end up still paying their half, PLUS making up the $1,000 that the Government check doesn’t cover from the employer. It’s not a universal healthcare plan, it’s a plan to make sure that the Insurance Co’s get paid, and to let the employers off the hook for any kind of support for health care. McStain’s plan simply takes over the employers’ obligation , and gives it to the government. He’s creating another entitlement, except it’s for the employers, not the workers.
Wonder why Obama didn’t lay the wood to McBush on his plans to cut Medicare and privatize social security- he could wrap up Florida in 30 seconds
Good point we need to get some confirmation on who gets the tax credit.
…won’t go there… ;-)
He probably had to run off to pee. You know those older guys with their prostates.
I loved watching Barack and Michelle working the room. The audience was a little standoffish at first but then they started to warm as the two of them kept talking and shaking hands. Pretty soon it was pictures and autographs, and at the end, they came out of the stands and just clustered around him to listen. Most of the audience never left either.
This was a Gallup hand-picked audience of “undecided” voters. Anyone think that most of them will be voting for Obama after that?
Ain’t no one gettin tha tax credit- cause this fucker ain’t EVER gonna see the inside of the Oval Office.
“I know how to do it!” J. McCain
what was it, a revelation from God?
i had not thought of that.. thanks – that makes more sense than anything i’ve been able to come up with.
McBush says that he knows how to win a war. Odd since he lost the only one he was ever in- the fucker’s oh for one.
As I understood the debate John and Sarah claim that McCain is an economic reformer because he supported a bill to regulate Fannie and Freedie after it had been out a year and had no chance of passing?
Thats not even a fig leaf to hide behind and the MSM just lets McCain say this stuff ARRRGH!
plus, with the regressive tax structure he would pursue, it would be the workers who would be paying the government back for the lost revenue from the tax break
there are those who say that he is wanting to win in vietman by winning in iraq – whatever his idea of winning is no one knows but its like he is stuck in the past and only looks there for solutions.
Would’ve thought that they’d have catheterized him for the debate.
Maybe his shoe was wet
esp if he has old guy prostrate/going issues
Yeah, what was with Mc’s whole not-gonna-tell-ya-how-I’m-gonna-do-it thing?
By God, he’ll establish a commission…! I thought that was the lamest proposal ever…!
Well, if he was coming right back then why did Cindy leave with him? To help him out?
I think he left – thinking Obama would too (not bright is he?) and then when his handlers figured out that Obama was still in there working the crowd he/they decided to come back – but it was definitely too late because the Obamas had them eating out of their hands.
Ha Ha!
Cindy doesn’t like to be left alone with poor people
My thing is that if he really does know how to catch bin Laden, then he should be prosecuted for treason for keeping it a secret all this time!
mccain is reactive
obama is proactive
one responds to trouble after it happens
the other sees trouble coming and prevents it
mccain was too little too late about everything tonight
McBush couldn’t catch his mother if she had a head start- let alone Osama
when I saw the title of the post “Changes” I thought about making a joke regarding old men and depends, but decided it would be in poor taste, so I didnt
Eggs ackly!
I think the electorate is weighing in on this right now. There is no plan and they (we) know it. Makes him look like a schmuck.
He needs a cranium cath..
well, then i won’t laugh
Greg Palast and RFK Jr have a “Steal back your vote” comic book for a small/large donation that will help print up more to give away.
http://www.gregpalast.com/
Well, either that or he really doesn’t get that winning the election is about spending time with the peasants (voters) and making some effort to be charming. Can’t you just see him driving away in the back of his limo, turning on the post debate show and watching Barack and the lovely Michelle charming the sox off of HIS voters, and screaming at his driver “Take me back! Take me baaaaack!!! ;)
Nice to see a presidential candidate with such a great sense of humor- it was well beyond the range of the audience
I can’t believe I couldn’t watch the debate tonight. Got an upsetting call but my husband taped it for me. Can’t wait to watch.
What did you think of when Brokaw asked who they would pick for Treasury and McSame said “not you, Tom”. I thought that was totally weird…
Space Oddity (2001-A Space Odyssey Music Video) This is one of his greats enjoy. David Bowie
Yeah that was a real knee slapper
was it after that when brocaw stopped being as much of an ass to bo and started holding mccain to the timeclock?
that’s it in a nutshell. which one is the leader and which one the maverick. mavericks don’t lead they react.
good one suze.
was his lame “hair plugs” attempt at a joke actually a dig at Joe Biden?
i love that entire movie bb – thanks
Bradblog has a warning about not voting straight ticket. It names 15 states that have straight ticket voting.
http://www.bradblog.com/?p=6478
That was another great one—wow!
underlying hostility leaked out. he just cannot help himself.
I did get to see that part. That was just weird. I took it to mean sort of, you’re not going to ask me that too Tom as in a et tu, brute. But now I get it. oh that’s funny…not.
Yeah, thinking back – I do think so.
Nice how McSame keeps shooting his base in the face!
The Surge is working! Obama won’t admit it! John we won WW2 in less time and at less costs are the Iraq’s really worse than the Nazis?
Or did George I *cough* listen to the commanders on the ground, not send enough troops to Iraq and then waited years before he would admit his mistake and send more troops.
Are oil prices still high? Can we send the troops home without Iraq going into chaos?
No?
Then the Surge didn’t work.
Lets send the troops home anyway fixing a cluster F is sometimes not worth the time, money and especially the Solders.
Is victory really worth it? Staying the course supporting the Surge is not getting us any closer to victory. It is getting us closer to broke.
perhaps gratuitous insults are his idea of humor
or maybe he was delivering a coded message from sarah palin
Just another smack at “the Media”
mcgeezer & sindy must have reappeared when I was in the kitchen refilling my plate of still warm brownies – bless mrbrat’s great heart…. your plants are looking great and thriving in our beautiful Indian Summer sunshine. ;>D
isn’t another word for maverick “misfit”?
like, you know, the guy who was fifth lowest in his class at the academy?
Palin tells great jokes like “domestic terrorist” guffaw- wink!
Way worse than that, from what I understand. He wants to remove the tax credit for employers who provide healthcare to their employees, and he’ll treat any employer provided healthcare you do receive as taxable income. The overall goal of his plan is to remove employers from the equation, and move us over to a system of individual plans, no group plans. It’s a very Randian approach. I’ve heard Objectivists talk about similar things, trying to argue that individual bargaining is more effective than collective bargaining. It’s all the same thing, everyone for themselves, and to hell with anyone who can’t hack it.
mccain’s inner ugly is starting to show its true face – his anger at everyone and everything that is not exactly as he expects it to be.
he’s in trouble and knows it – and is therefore now doubly likely to attack even nastier and uglier.
and there is one more debate to go next week.
He may be way past “trouble”
http://www.stealbackyourvote.com
heard about this today on the radio…
Someone in his camp has to be thinking, and saying I imagine,
I wonder who that might be?
i think he can only admit to ‘trouble’. anything else comes too close to the truth for him to accept.
i dunno about the saying it to him – he’s got quite the temper yanno
He has the same kind of trouble that dead people do….”There will be peace in the valley for mee”
Ugh, reminds me of an email I got today from a relative, talking about the evil Bill Ayers. Even *gasp* lying about him! The original author of the email claimed Ayers was a convicted terrorist, only problem is, Ayers was never even tried, charges were dropped before he even turned himself in.
Well, he’s getting some help from debbie wasserman schultz in spreading the word. Many retirees in her area. and shes all over the TV.
The last Pres election they talked a lot about the tallest candiate usually wins. According to that rollingstone article McSame is touchy abt his height. Maybe that is why he doesn’t want to be near Obama?
http://www.rollingstone.com/ne…..ohn_mccain
His wife I’m sure she has seen this all before and knows the signs.
He admits that he blew up a statue—shoulda made him pay for the damned thing I suppose.
Ground control to Major Tom…Ground Control to Major you really made the grade
Majot Tom to ground control I’m stepping through the door… I’m floating in a most unusual way and there is nothing I can do…tell my wife I love her very much…
Folks were stuck here on planet Earth. Let’s make the most of it shall we?
What a great tune. When them brown eyes get blue there is nothing you can do.
2 approaches, same objective. Insurance.
I still don’t get why we have to GIVE 30% of our healthcare dollars to a middleman that provides absolutely no value added to the care, and yet, no one will even talk about all the money we’re wasting.
there must be a Wal Mart somewhere that needs a nice old retired man as a greeter…
oh yeah, the job description says “nice”…
i think bo started us off tonight when he said health care should be a right.
Thanks Suzzanne David is a master showman and a great writer/philosopher.
he has nightmares of a tall, dark man looking down on him…
The actual point of the “greeter” is to catch shoplifters—McBush might like the work- but he couldn’t run down a felon in a wheelchair.
you are quite welcome – as i said, it seemed exactly the correct song for tonight
glad you are tripping down the stardust lane…
Given all the prosecutorial misconduct, FBI lies, and other little tidbits – they just wanted him to go quietly away. Which he did. Until now.
The Chicago Newspaper columnist Mike Ryoko had a similar theory he thought the winner would have the best hair though.
Can one terrorize a statute?
SDS guys always had an inflated idea of their own importance.
CSPAN narrator said Obama won both coin tosses so he got to have the first question and Biden won his coin toss and got the first question too. Only one debate left.
You guys are great. It’s been a privilege, once again. Night all.
Love Bowie, Suz! Went up to Kansas City on a whim to catch him a few years ago..and WOW! He put on a show with such high energy…. few young men in their twenties could pull off. We were all dancing and singing days afterwards.
I had a nice chuckle on that one, thanks.
He’s admitted to more than that. Problem is, the government, through COINTELPRO, thoroughly fucked up. All charges were dropped due to prosecutorial misconduct. Not that big of a deal really, aside from the Greenwich blast, in which several Weathermen killed themselves through their own incompetence building a bomb, and the Brinks armored car robbery, in which two former Weathermen were involved, none of their actions killed or injured anyone.
About the craziest thing they ever did was bust Timothy Leary out of prison.
Nice seen ya at the Lake again Nite
g’nite conniptionfit
Yes, and Weathermen did too. One of the things that Ayres admitted in his book was ‘our sense of overweening self-importance…” etc.
So much for unreprentant.
i love shows like that – it becomes a power exchange between performer and audience and both benefit
Things, the Surge failed in more ways than you cite, the only tangible result was a drop in violence… and even that cannot be attributed solely to the Surge… Now, the lull is in dire jeopardy and we still have elevated troop levels as opposed to the pre-surge numbers, I cover a lot of that minutiae in my post today at M&C…
I must go, as well
nite, all
talking to you folks sure beats listening to TV pundits
I must have read at least three MSM news reports saying that very thing this evening. It’s not a secret that he was never tried. I just love America’s ability to get wound up about stuff they can’t even be bothered to research first.
g’nite neuro
Nite Neuro
Goodnight, neurophius.
I have to admit.. I really didn’t understand the health care /commodity question at first.
What a foreign idea… marketing a human right… at least it should be a foreign idea.
While tripping in stardust I am eating apples fried lightly in orgsnic (naturally) safflower oil with cinnamon, nutmeg and quite by accident dumped in 1/4 bottle of ginger powder with brown sugar on the top. Served with two cups of a nice tea. And I feel allright. So the other night’s apple discussion propmted me to get fresh picked apples at Farmer’s Market yesterday.
Speakimg of stars..clear sky 1/2 moon up high a simply gorgeouis evening that not even McInsane can despoil. I definitely feel the ginger and tea. I feel like dancin the night away.
I recomend opening up utube on another google link and playing Space Odyssey as back ground it is quite civilized.
Cool, looks like there’s hope for Treeman.
i’m sitting in my living room, looking out at that same moon – backlighting cape lookout.
Damn, old man McCain just can’t seem to catch a break.
eureka, the landlord will be here tomorrow and i’ll ask her about storing apples.
and find out what kinda apples are growing here.
Hey you turn a nice metaphor there.
I thought it was insultive. I couldn’t get why it was said, unless he knows Brokaw personally in some finance-related way.
Yeah, I loved Rachel’s analysis tonight where she compared McSame’s involvement with that anti-commie, nazi, anti-semite group in the mid 1980s.
She said the biggest difference was that McCain joined that group after it was already known to hold those views and during the time when the group was most active actually doing the things it espoused.
Ditto for the pitbull-with-lipstick’s involvement with AIP.
Obama on the other hand, meets this guy 40 years after the fact – and through a charity group that is working to improve education for inner city kids – not because Obama showed up at a Weather Underground reunion meeting.
mccain’s 17 lies tonight
I couldn’t figure that – Brokaw has been working as a ‘media liaison’ between the McCain campaign and NBC/MSNBC. It was his machinations that got Olbermann pulled from the on-the-scene debate and convention coverage. Little conflict of interest there? Unlike Gwen Ifill.
JFC, TeamObama is like lightning.
Thanks Suz!
So the Russians are looking to help the Bathists. The Prime Minster does not trust the new Sunni police group.
Hmm… Iran with the Prime minster, Russia with the Bathists a civil war would help both Iran and Russia because it would keep oil prices high and of course high oil prices weaken America.
I take it John does not play chess.
no kidding – i was wondering about that myself – it was quite apparent that he was favoring mcgeezer and was not at all unbiased in his moderating.
sure made me smile – i like the rapid response team not waiting until morning
thanks bb *blushing*
Both KO and Rachel were perplexed that much of the MSM fails to grasp that fundamental difference… McInsane participated during the hey-days… Obama’s ‘association’ was long after the fact… IOKIYAR!
Hoss, we’ll all get over it.
First we take Manhattan, THEN we take Berlin!
*G*
Nice summation, Things! ;-)
http://therecord.barackobama.com/?p=2001
McCain is shameless at stealing but a bad thief I’m surprised we didn’t catch this earlier.
and ayers is considered to be quite socially acceptable in chicago society iirc
Wonderful.. I would love to learn a storage trick so I could stock up.. Apple orchards about thirty miles away.. I’ll make the drive if stocking up would be worth while.
Well I finally joined netflix.. three years of catching up to do.
g’ nite
so many lies – so little time since the debate
g’nite es
Ground Control to Major Tom “you really made the grade Captain McCain”.
oh good – jon stewart is explaining about ayers tonight
Actually, when KO was interviewing the Linda Douglass after the debate, she brought it up but KO didn’t follow up and Rachel didn’t either.
Btw, The Russian connection blew me away… Not surprising after our Georgian fiasco, tho!
Thanks I really thought that McCain would make the war the big election issue.
But this lame Surge is working thing put the CNN graph people to sleep.
Is the war an issue anymore? Its not even showing up as a top 5 poll question?
Why what am I missing?
Aloha, ES!
good night eureka
great night
its the economy – people are hurting and thinking of themselves and what they need help with now. the war is kinda abstract to most folks unless they know someone serving.
That’s the part that people ought to be looking at – Obama didn’t join the Weathermen. He and Ayers were on the same charities, and Ayers offered some small support in Obama’s first political campaign. Ayers is rich and important – it’s probably hard not to be involved with him in some small way if you’re a Democratic politician in Chicago.
Mike Ryoko noted that local Chicago politicians had a higher conviction rate than the local Mob or Outfit as we call them. Of course in Alaska all of Sarah’s friends and family seem to be ducking subpoenas.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subpoena
Don’t the Cops arrest people for that?
Ayup. Simple is as simple shows.
And you show’d it. *G*
But this lame Surge is working thing put the CNN graph people to sleep.
Actually, IIRC, I saw the trend line dip below the neutral line for the first time during the debate, during that iteration from him, and it wasn’t the last time either…!
Craps seems to be more his style …
The 87% of people who want us out of Iraq are tired. Tired of hoping the pols will do the right thing. They have not so far. And the financial mess is a lot closer to home.
Right now the war only really affects the troops and their families and friends. And of course Halliburton and Blackwater et al.
Nothing will change until after January 20. Then we will begin bringing the troops home and the issue may become more important – but only if the financial meltdown hasn’t thrown the entire population into the streets.
Michigan’s apple orchards are going into full swing. Hopefully by november i’ll be able to afford to drop by one and get some fresh cider. Too bad they dont’ double as distilleries so i could get my paws on some hard cider. Gonna have to look around for THAT.
For now? Just concentrating on moving out by november. Got another line on a roomie, and i’ll be dropping by to see the place tomorrow.
I agree but if the war is not the issue then how did McCain expect the GOP win an election without Fear? The issues were not going to help him.
He needed some bourbon and a pair of dice…
Yeah, and by ’small support’ it was really small. The political fundraiser at Ayers’ home was not for Obama – it was for another politician who had just announced she was running for national Representative, vacating her State Senate office and she invited Obama along because he was ‘her designated replacement’.
Ayers donated a whole #200 to Obama’s campaign. Wow!
McCain is said to play Craps for hours does he play in a casino? How much does he bet? Does he use Cindy’s money $500 Bruno Magli shoes and a gambling habit seem hard to keep on a Senator’s pay.
Ummm… Their chickenhawks are coming home to roost…? ;-)
fivethirtyeight.com projects Obama to win with
– 89.2% likelihood
– 345.4 v. 192.6 electoral votes
– 51.9% v 46.5% polular vote.
yeap, as soon as the judge issues an arrest warrant, they soy tan lee do.
fingers and toes crossed alias
You bet he plays in a casino. One that has very close ties to Cindy’s mob father and her uncle. He is a ‘preferred’ client.
He could spend his entire Senate salary ($180,000) playing because he gets a VA disability pension, and of course he has no other expenses to pay since Cindy provides him with food and shelter and transportation.
And some one should hand you the kewpie doll prize for that’s what it’s all about.
As I’ve read, McCain will TAX the health benefits (which are now tax free) that corporations and businesses now provide to their workers.
Once this tax is in place, the average $12K cost of the plan for the worker is no longer affordable to the employer.
So some many millions of people with job based healthcare for themselves and their family’s are now cut off, with NO healthcare.,
And the $5K credit McCain offers, now has to go to plans that cost WAY more than that $12K, as the private sector rachet’s up THEIR cost to do business, and denies many for pre-existing conditions, including over 55, and weight issues, and many more.
And more and more people are denied care, and coverage.
Pure genocide in a form. And horrendous.
Go ahead, find a place where $5K buys $12K worth of present coverage.
For you, OR your family.
Harumph. Muk, FcCain.
Storage of Honeycrisp Apples [Split from MSP Honeycrisp thread]
just ate a Minnesota grown Honeycrisp today! according to the grower they will keep nicely for up to 7 mo. at 37° My basement is ~ 40° all winter-I think I will try to stock up next year.
ES et al try this link to learn apple storage. The old fruit cellar under ground a stand by and zero carbon footprint. The return to the good ol days.
During the 1968 campaign, Nixon claimed to have a secret plan to end the Vietnam war. Some time after Nixon’s resignation, David Frost interviewed him and asked if he really had a plan to end the war. In essence, Nixon replied, “Of course not; that’s just one of those things you say during a campaign.”
Dang, even crept up from yesterday…! Should be interesting to see the fallout from this debate…
Dance The Night Away!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lteb–nvuyo
Never mind the money issue – it is just idiotic to think that an individual can find insurance in this market cheaper then they can get through an employer plan. It. Just. Ain’t. Gonna. Happen.
This thing of ‘choices’ in the marketplace is the same ‘free-market’ argument that led to the break-up of Ma Bell (and higher prices) and deregulation of the utilities to provide competition (Enron et al) (and higher prices) and now this latest meltdown (complete with higher prices for oil, food, and everything else).
Of course this means all McSlime’s cronies (and he himself) get richer. After all, that is the true purpose of his plan. He is completely uninterested in what happens to ‘the middle-class’ that he just cannot bring himself to mention.
there’s gonna be lotsa fallout – i figure we oughta double glove cause its gonna get nasty and the shit’s gonna be flying.
When? that would be must see tv with a laugh track! How long do they normally give you to comply with a subpoena before they issue the arrest warrant?
I can’t believe it’ll go anywhere but up.
linkie no good :(
The full realities of the conservative line is finally sinking in to the electorate… Unfortunately long after the damage has been done…!
Ahhhhh, missed the whole damn thing.
Knocked myself out just in time.
Have a wonderful evening pups, I am going back to sleep.
I forgot, I was reading somewhere else that McCain has between $30-$40 million of net worth on his own – without Cindy. So I guess he can afford solid gold shoes or whatever he wants.
Besides, “preferred clients” at those Vegas casinos don’t really lose too much. It would be bad for ‘business’ if ya get my drift.
can be done quickly once the warrant is issued – up to the judge – if the judge says i want x here now, well, the cop serving the warrant is motivated because no one wants to piss off a judge.
You buggah, a drive by Hi-Bye, eh?
hi and g’nite busted
Depends on the size of his bets, Bill Bennet lost over a million dollars but still tried to claim he won more than he lost leaked casino records proved otherwise.
I would love to hear McCain make the claim that his gambling is not a problem because he wins more than he loses.
Because given his father in laws mob past and John’s Indian casino connections reporters will get very interested in whether John beat the house or was floated bribes from casinos who let him win.
Or, if ya have the DC Circuit contemplating a congressional subpoena, then it gets kicked down the road… Sorry F*ckers…!
We agree, and it started in CA when Ronnie Raygun was governator.
And it continued when he was elected to prez in ‘80.
And it continued on thru teh neocon’s with Newt, and then the PNAC.
We agree. *G*
those drinking bingo games during live blogs can take down even the toughest amongst us
That should be an Obama ad run all the McCain secret plan clips then run the Nixon bit if its on tape or read it if its not.
Musta been ‘My friends’ that did him in…! ;-)
But is Sarah special or what her and her husband have been ignoring this for awhile now.
I am hoping that if we survive this, the lessons from the “Shock Doctrine” will be a ’shock’ to the sheeple, and that those lessons will be like the ones from the Great Depression era. People from that era were/are distrustful of credit and high finance because of what they endured. They understand that people need to live within their means, and understand purchasing only what they actually need, rather then everything they want. The rest of us, sorry to say, are going to need just such a ’shock’ to re-learn that lesson. And I think that is partially what Obama was trying to get across when he talked about our individual responsibility in how we use energy – though I would expand the argument to include all forms of consumerism.
its going to be heard by the alaska state supreme court – and they are likely to enforce the legality of the subpoenas – is why those folks are now saying they will cooperate. even todd said he will respond in writing to questions.
I’m pretty sure the police have come after my friends for missing traffic court dates more than once in less time than Sarah has been under investigation for troopergate.
If the GOP wants to claim dirty tricks we can point out that even missing traffic court gets less slack than Sarah has been shown.
Ok nite Suz
Conservatives have been working diligently to undo all the regulations imposed since they were first passed during the Depression… Glass-Stegall was the last real bulwark…! 8-(
I would argue that it really goes back all the way to FDR’s New Deal. The right wing was so incensed by what it viewed as a commie-pinko-socialist plot that they have been scheming and conniving ever since to get rid of all the stuff from the New Deal. They have almost succeeded – Social Security is pretty much the last bit of it. Unfortunately for them, LBJ got that pesky Medicare thingy passed and that fried them to the gills. And I dare say, made them even more determined. Ronnie Raygun was the first pres to really buy into it and because he was so popular was able to really start the ball rolling backwards. So it seemed like it started there, but Nixon was part of the plan as well – his job – and he did it very well, was to emasculate the media as a true watchdog of government. We are living with the results of that as well.
she mccainthe rnc has lawyers that are representing her and delaying enforcement by questioning the legality of the subpoenas.g’nite things
Aloha, Things…!
I’ve tried to find any online reference to that part of the Frost interview. My memory can be faulty, it I remember it rather clearly. Does anyone know where I might find a video of that interview?
Yeah, I just fell off the chair when McSlime said that he thought that repealing Glass-Steagall was good for the economy since it allowed the capital markets to grow. WTF?
Grow? Gee whiz. Compared to 1999 when that happened – do you think that compared to today we have had growth in the capital market? Dear McInsane, please explain.
Ground control to Major John comencing countdown engines on you’vr really made the grade and the paper want to know wha…. I’m stepping through the door and the stars look very different…one and one is two and there is nithing I can do…
Great accousrical guitar
Though I’m 100,000 miles from home.. tell my wife love her very much
Oh, my mistake. I guess the ‘capital’ markets did grow. Someone who knows way more about this stuff than I do estimated the total pile of those lovely ‘credit default swaps’ to be in the neighborhood of $63 trillion dollars – more than the GDP of the entire planet.
And it is a worthless pile of paper as far as I can see.
dave is on forking fire tonight!
Ground control to Major John…there is something very wrong..
might be in here.
Forgetting the name of the blond woman who does personal finance programs/books but she was on CNN today espousing the same principles you describe. Sit wolfie (iirc) was in near melt-down mode going “but…..but……but how can the country survive if people don’t consume.” Again, iirc, basically her response was “worry about the country later; people gotta take care of their own personal finances first.”
My jaw dropped as well…! Sad, that Obama didn’t capitalize on it…!
Well, the markets did rise to 14,000 on the leverage it afforded the house of cards… As I’d remarked earlier the recent 5,000 point drop is $7 Trillion that went *poof*…
Suze Orman?
Suze Orman – she’s great. She’s been giving that same advice for about 10 years now. Live within your means. Don’t use credit to finance toys and crap. Pay off your bills and quit spending so much on stuff you don’t really need. Save money for a rainy day.
And the best one of all – if it’s that important for you to have – it’s important enough to make a plan and save the money to get it, rather than put it on credit.
Poof out of millions of retiement accounts and those investor clients are hopping mad. There is a growing pool of anger that Obama has yet to tap. Retirees that have seen their “Golden Years” slipping away, turning into “Golden Parachutes” for the Wall Street crooks that run that big casino. They are Republicans, Democrats, Independents and they are not going to swallow more of the same policies.
NcChange keeps changing his story which is the only change he will make. You can take that to the bank. Fool me twice… When people lose their do..re..me they stay pissed. His buddy Gramm cracker busted the US Treasury vault wide open with his legislation anf John’s support.
When peolle lose their do..re..me and their jobs they want accountability.
Uh oh, did ya’ll experience that hiccup…? Anyways, funny how that same philosophy holds true for Govt. as well, imagine if we had a pragmatic defense budget… Destroyers that aren’t wanted, ‘Star Wars’, etc… Think of the billions not needed, and, that’s not even considering Iraq…
ok pups, its been a long forking nite and my fingers are fried. g’nite all and thanks for hanging out with me tonight.
nite suz
Aloha, Suz!
CT and lokywoky -
Yuppers, that’s the one! She’s sometimes a little much for me to take in the show-length format but her advice is spot-on sound as best I can tell on most aspects of personal finance (emphasis on the “personal”). She doesn’t spout any of the “don’t ask government take care of you” gibberish of the thugs; just straight forward “here’s the best way to take care of yourself.”
Yup. And I see that whole statement as indicative of why people are having a hard time dealing with or understanding this. Some social scientist a long time ago (back when a Billion was considered an astronomical amount) did some research on the subject of understanding large numbers. What he found was that if you get beyond about $3 billion – a person cannot wrap their mind around how much/big that is. The average joe sixpack thinks $1 million is a lot of money. It is. But we throw these numbers (billions, trillions) around like it was just dimes and quarters.
In the past two weeks – we have provided $630 billion from the Treasury in cash for liquidity, $700 billion plus another $105 billion in earmarks for the ‘bail-out’, and another $643 billion for the defense spending bill.
People cannot understand this. I don’t, and I consider myself to be on the upper end of the smarts scale (not blowing horn) and I talk to some of my neighbors (one of whom did not graduate high school) and I wonder just how in the world a person like herself is supposed to understand. She is a single mom working two menial jobs just trying to raise her kid and live her life. People like McCain and the MSM make fun of people like her, they are the ‘low-information voters’. Well, she’s working too hard to spend all her time watching debates (she was at her son’s school with him doing an activity) or cruising the internet trying to find out what’s going on (I don’t think she owns a computer). If she did watch the debate – without all the other background – I think she would have had a hard time understanding all the backhanded references, and a lot of the stuff both the candidates left unsaid.
She understands that McCain is pro-life (I told her that), and she also understands that the Bush reign has not been good for her financially, or in terms of her child’s education. She is voting for Obama – but it isn’t because she is up on the Ayres thing or the Wright thing or AIP or any of that crap.
Johnny boy..you’ve lost that loving feeling, now it gone.. gone..gone.. and you can’t go on whoa oh oh oh oh
You thought that the White House was yours yesterday ay ay ay. you’ve lost that lovin feelin and your head is explosing cause kittle georgie porgie got all those state dinners and you did not make the freakin grade.
Except that, IIUC, the European union nations are prospering under policies that one might call “Son of New Deal.” The treat their workers well, with long vacations and great job security. Universal healthcare. High taxes, including gas tax. Well maintained infrastructure. Excellent public transportation. And so on.
Heh, well said! I can’t recall exactly who said it, but, ‘A billion here and a billion there, it soon adds up to real money…’ Or so I think it went… ;-)
Yeah – she is a little in-your-face. But people call her with the stupidest questions, and it’s like they already know what she’s going to say but they’re hoping against hope that she will tell them to go ahead with whatever stupid thing they really want to do. And then they can use her as an excuse. Only she doesn’t and they are sooooo disappointed.
Ha Ha!
Funny how that works, eh? ;-)
Kinda like that – only it was a Million here, etc. How the times have changed, eh?
Yes, and contrary to wing-nut philosophy – the people in all those countries do NOT mind paying taxes!!! Because they know what they are getting in return.
Per http://gegenschein.wordpress.c…..lly-large/
Sadly, Only in his closing statement did Obama actually mention that Healthcare costs were forcing people into bankruptcy… and he missed the golden opportunity of saying that it’s the leading cause for bankruptcy… How many Canadians, Brits, or French can say they were forced to file because of medical costs…? Hmmm…? Zero…!
Adjusted for inflation…! ;-)
We’re almost there on this bit – how much exactly do we owe China?
I once told a right-wing colleague that I feel that I get more utility per dollar from the taxes I pay than from any other expenditure. He nearly shit himself. He insisted that he couldn’t believe that I was that stupid. But he was never able to raise any reasonable argument to the contrary.
I’d seen conservative estimates at $3 Trillion we owe the Chinese…
Did you ask him to build an inter-continental highway, or a railroad, or a dam, or a rocket ship, or an atomic reactor, or a an mri, or a university with all the tax money he saved?
Fluff piece from the wapo on palin after her last appearance today in Greenville, NC:

[my bold]
Yeah, riiiiiiiight! An “unscheduled debate watching party” and she *just happens* to meet up with some of NC’s biggest thugs. Just exactly how stupid is the so-called reporter who filed this tripe?
Thugs’ one-word response:
PRIVATIZE!
Interesting how well that’s worked out in Iraq. :-(
Yep was in Germany on a study abroad program. It was amazing how relaxed and confident the people I met were that were living under that system. While in USA, corporatist want us to be at their mercy and be in a position to exploit others..hence ssshrinking the middle class… it seems more about power and control.
If fellow citizens knew the security they would be on iy in a heart beat. ‘How To Win Friends And Influence People’ by Dale Carnegie. We are taught to manipulate in our system. To best others in competition. Collaborative efforts are not encouraged as the paradigm is not part of getting ahead and getting the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow…the Golden Parachute.
IMHO, the success of FDR’s New Deal policies in Europe is the best-kept secret in the universe.
In Saturday’s Newsweek, the Reaganism/neocon theoretician Francis Fukayama had an article where he repudiated lowering taxes, releasing economic controls, and militarism. But he has clung tenaciously to the need to keep workers worried and uncomfortable:
See: http://oxdown.firedoglake.com/diary/473
Now, now, waccamaw, ya wouldn’t be impugning the WaPoo’s integrity would ya… I know my local pizzeria would be a typical watering hole for the political bigwigs… Did I fail to mention it’s a Domino’s?
Well, they can’t because it is true. What other medical insurance than Medicare has an operating overhead of below 3%? What other prescription drug plan but the one the VA has provides every prescription to vets for $8?
Private sector companies CANNOT compete with government provision of services. I am always amazed at anyone who believes this is even possible since there are two rules here:
1) Private corporation only duty is to MAKE A PROFIT.
2) The government does not make a profit, indeed – it is forbidden to do so.
So, I never cease to be amazed at the people who believe that outsourcing work to the private sector will somehow save money. In addition to the cost of the corporation’s ‘profit’ the government incurs the additional costs of the bidding process (assuming they use one of course) and then the administration of the contract as well as paying for the entire thing plus the profit.
I think this is a subject that needs to be revisited or actually just visited in the very near future. Especially around the military. The military, prior to this administration, was pretty completely self-sufficient. They did their own security, provided their own supply lines, food, fuel, logistical support, etc. They did it using military personnel. And the federal government’s purchasing power, something that even the crooks at Halliburton cannot match. They didn’t have to pay huge CEO salaries (I would bet the entire group of Generals and Admirals don’t make as much as Halliburton’s CEO!) The troops were well fed, had boots and laundry soap when they needed it, weren’t getting electrocuted in their showers (17 so far), and if left to their own devices, would probably have had MRAPs and those really good body armor before they went into Iraq.
Look at Blackwater’s cost per contractor in Iraq vs. the U.S. military. I’m talking about the incremental cost of sending one more man there.
Vietnam, which had a lot more personnel involved hasn’t cost even a third of what this Iraqi fiasco has cost to date and that is utilizing inflation adjusted numbers…
It was fascinating to watch the free-software movement unfold. American executives were predisposed to believe that it was impossible for not-for-profit effort could possibly compete with one of America’s most successful corporations. Similarly, the Wikipedia couldn’t possibly happen.
They had been so indoctrinated by Reagan and the unseen-hand job that they refused to believe what they were witnessing.
Who? Moi? In a forkin’ heartbeat!
WTF???
Back in the 70s, you called the telephone company. The telephone company came to your house, ran all the wiring, installed however many phones you wanted. AND DID NOT CHARGE YOU FOR THE SERVICE CALL. OR THE PHONE. OR TOLD YOU TO GO GET SOMEONE ELSE TO RUN THE WIRE INSIDE YOUR HOUSE.
And the bills were lower than any phone I can think of now. Except for maybe Vonage.
Was this guy alive back then?
Back in the 70s I was flying back and forth across the country. I was in the military, and then I was out but with a husband still in and a young child. My parents are in one state, his in another, he on overseas deployment. Not rich by any stretch. Yet I managed to fly to Barcelona Spain to meet his ship for a liberty week. Wow!
AFDC – don’t get me started. This goes to the old saw that somehow, staying at home and TAKING CARE OF CHILDREN is not work. That it is not valuable.
So we put these people to ‘work’ at menial, minimum wage subsistence jobs, and then PAY SOMEONE ELSE TO CARE FOR THEIR CHILDREN! What a crock!
Easier to fire workers – yeah union-busting and out-sourcing. That has had a really great effect on our economy. And the biotech and other industries would have come along anyway. But maybe, just maybe, we would still have other good jobs still here. Another crock.
Grrr.
Blackwater is costing us more than just the price tag for one of their reps in country… Beaucoup of our SF, Rangers, Seals, etc… are leaving the service to them, costing us even more to replace them…!
Well, even Microsoft products fly in the face of their models too. As the operating systems get more complicated with more and more bells and whistles, the conventional wisdom is that it should all be more expensive. But it’s not – in fact, considering the price of computers now, and inflation etc, it’s waaaaay cheaper. And that is a for-profit company – and they are definitely making money!
Excellent rant!
Long ago and far away when they first started talking about breaking up Ma Bell, I *knew* it was gonna be a disaster……..and it has been. That’s at least one case of a monopoly that functioned well; now we have monopolies that don’t function at all. :-(
Andrew Sullivan’s last live-blog entry this evening:
nite pups
I fully concur! Aloha, newt!
lokywoky -
Not many of us left hanging on the thread so guess it’s obvious 261’s for you. Can’t remember to hit the late-blooming “reply”, wide awake or half asleep. :-(
Catch up with you guys tomorrow…zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Well, do you blame them? My ex-son-in-law is a former Navy Seal. He was working as a Deputy Sheriff on the SWAT team when all this contracting in Iraq came up. He went – not with Blackwater – but he was making $13,000 per month, and $80,000 of it was tax free!
He was providing security services for the State Department. Unfortunately on his second tour over there, his vehicle was hit by an IED and he lost a leg, two other guys were killed, but the ‘client’ was saved. Nice.
But those two dead guys aren’t counted anywhere as part of the cost of this war either.
I don’t criticize the guys who work for these outfits – the mindset at this outfit was really different from Blackwater – but the money is what draws them. My SIL was making $27,000 per year at his Sheriff job. He has a child to support. I asked him if he thought it was worth losing his leg over – and he said at this point he’s not sure. He’s still learning to use his new prosthetics and hasn’t really started looking for new work – but I think that’s where the story will get bad.
Well, I shall turn in too! I bid ya’ll a fond adieu! Aloha Oe!!!
I don’t blame them one Iota, loky! I was merely stating the true costs incurred…! *poof*
g’nite.

“Walk softly and carry a big stick.” Hopefully you won’t have to use it and suffer the horrible and unecessary consequences that Bushco has inflicted on us and the rest of the world in so many ways. If John McInsane really understood his hero he would not want to start shit…he would want to finish it. or was it George Bush? Be a bad ass and get your ass kicked…ask Idi Amin and a long list. There is enough trouble in life without asking for it. Wisdom is the better part of valor.
Namaste
The market in Asia… now Europe are in big trouble falling as much as 10%. This is hemmoraging. The central banks, the governments and capital are trying every devise they can dream of lower rates. lower margins, restate balance sheet, buy bad investments for pixie values and gaurantee deposits. Nothing has worked so far. It is spinning out of control. One day at a time.
Attaturk is upstairs!
