Oct. 6 – The FBI and Department of Homeland Security today issued an analytical "note" to U.S. law-enforcement officials cautioning that al-Qaida terrorists have in the past expressed interest in attacking public buildings using a dozen suicide bombers each carrying 20 kilograms of explosives.
Authors with the U.S. Office of Intelligence and Analysis added that they have "no credible or specific information that terrorists are planning operations against public buildings in the United States." The FBI and DHS analysts said they were releasing the note because "it is important for local authorities and building owners and operators to be aware of potential attack tactics."

Hmmm. The consensus seems to be that this was an Obama blowout. I thought he won, but not as clearly as he did the first time around. His answer on Russia seemed a bit muddled, but I think that’s because no one really has any good answers on Russia. McCain keeps chattering away about the KGB, and I don’t think he realizes how that sounds. It’s like going on and on about how much you like Bananarama–it makes you sound 20 years out of date.

Agree. I think a lot of folks don’t appreciate the “wounded pride” factor. The collapse of the Soviet Union was a big psychological blow for Russia. It would have been like Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, and California suddenly leaving the US. Russia needs to be flattered more than it needs to be bullied. Tell them they’re a great country that can do great things, and then ask them to head up some big enterprise. Let them lead for once, instead of telling them how they should behave.

If first impressions mean anything, it looks like McCain didn’t help himself tonight. Pollster had the race at 49.8 to 43.6 for Obama before the debate today.

The report, by Inspector General H. David Kotz, was requested by Senator Charles Grassley to examine the role of regulators prior to the firm’s collapse in March. Before it was released to the public on Sept. 26, Kotz deleted 136 references, many detailing SEC memos, meetings or comments, at the request of the agency’s Division of Trading and Markets that oversees investment banks.
“People can judge for themselves, but it sure looks like the SEC didn’t want the public to know about the red flags it apparently ignored in allowing Bear Stearns and other investment banks to engage in excessively risky behavior,” the Iowa Republican said in an e-mailed statement.
