Victory gardens, folks, victory gardens. Trade with friends. Local trade goods-for-goods or services arrangements. We can do this! It might even be fun. I suggest everybody who thinks of something for their area share with the rest of us, and we’ll all get through. It’s much less scary when everybody is broke, my Mother tells me. Get together with a neighbor and fix that pothole yourselves, don’t consult “authority”. They’ll never know, and it’s none of their damn business anyway. Remember a wise saying: a weak government makes a strong people. Americans are a strong independent bunch, and we’ll get through this by our own efforts.

I think I might have mentioned that the old man pinched one of the portholes when they converted at Mare Island and carried it the whole war in that tiny locker. He left it to me but my step-mom isn’t ready to part with it, 5 years later!

Agreed. I’m only special to a small number of folks in this world and it has nothin’ to do with anything I’ve ever done.

I have a book that is the envy of every true tin can sailor alive. Destroyer Operations in World War II was published by the Naval Institute. It has a pic of HOPEWELL just after she was hit by a kamakazie port side amidships. Those old cans were more fun. When the bos’n mate said “underway” over the 1MC I was in heaven.

No they don’t - however, I wouldn’t be surprised if Bush gave the Medal of Freedom and a hearty “heckuva job!” to Phil Gramm on the way out the door!

That’s an excellent point. Gramm was involved in both Gramm-Leach-Bliley and the repeal of Glass-Steagall and the Commodity Futures Modernization Act which deregulated derivatives.
