Early Morning Swim: Presidential Debate Preview Edition

  • Tonight, the Town Hall-style debate in Nashville.
  • If McSame had any guts, he’d call Obama a terrorist to his face.
  • But that’s probably not gonna happen.
  • Are these character smears coming too late?
  • Obama increases lead in NBC/WSJ poll.
  • And CNN poll. And key battlegrounds.
  • Dow dropped to below 10,000 yesterday.
  • NYTimes on the bailout: "a pebble tossed into a churning sea."
  • Uh, weird?
  • Palin will be calling Obama "Osama" in Florida again today.
  • Maybe they’ll be another racial incident!

CLEARWATER — Constantly under the watchful eyes of security, the media wasn’t permitted to wander around inside Coachman Park to talk to Sarah Palin supporters. When reporters tried to leave the designated press area and head toward the bleachers where the crowd was seated, an escort would dart out of nowhere and confront him or her and say, “Can I help you?” and turn the person around.
When one reporter asked an escort, who would not give her name, why the press wasn’t allowed to mingle, she said that in the past, negative things had been written. The campaign wanted to avoid that possibility Monday.

Missed the community radio evening news last night so didn’t get to hear the dirt. Adam Smith, the Times’ political editor, wrote this piece of Palin love. Smith is an unapologetic GOP hack. I’ll take the Clearwater police estimate over the GOP’s any day.

Who knew that the standard set by Dubya the Magnificent would be lowered
by fly-boy Johnny and his new squeeze… it all must remind McCain of a
joke from his era about the difference between a tribe of pygmies and a
womwn’s track team. Be careful what you ridicule, you might see it in the
mirror one day.

Yesterday, I spent two-and-a-half hours in a doctor’s waiting room, with Fox news hard-wired into the TV. It was my idea of hell, but I did notice that none of the other patients started loudly spouting their opinions about “them libruls”, etc.. They sat through Palens crap, repeated every ten minutes or so, with pretty grim silence or talking about other subjects. So, things are looking up. That’s about as good as it gets in Texas.

re tonight’s debate – i missed this analysis (from a couple of days ago) on the VP debate.

VP Debate an Exchange of Disinformation
by Stephen Zunes

The Oct. 2 debate between Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Delaware Sen. Joe Biden was disturbing for those of us hoping for a more enlightened and honest foreign policy during the next four years. In its aftermath, pundits mainly focused on Palin’s failure to self-destruct and Biden’s relatively cogent arguments. Here’s an annotation of the foreign policy issues raised during the vice-presidential debate, which was packed with demonstrably false and misleading statements.

zune then goes through, statement by statement, correcting both candidates. worth a read and i hope he does a similar analysis on tonight’s debate.

Belmont has been polishing the door knobs and getting ready for several months. They are very proud to have been selected for the Town Hall type debate format, and everyone here in Nashville is abuzz. I know I’m not going to be anywhere near airport at noon, when Sen. Obama arrives.

Given the calculated mantra from th McPalin campaign, I’m curious about both the questions the Brokaw has selected from the audience as well as the McPalin spin that will be applied to both answer the question yet stay on message. (I mean, how many times can Ayers be the right answer?)

Six months ago, I actually got a whole waiting room (in Columbus, Ohio) talking about the state of the country, the war and the economy due to Fox news being the waiting room buzz. I asked to change the TV to PBS but the nurse would not allow me to. People first looked at me like I was crazy. Then I simply shared my own personal stories of how I was being affected with the woman sitiing next to me. Eyes opened wide and others started telling their experiences. We were talking politics through talking personal experiences in the context of changes in our lives over the last seven years. My experiences were especially personal with a brother in Iraq for 4+ years as well as a sister-in-law who lost her baby almost full term and she nearly died because she did not spontaneously abort when the baby died in utero, she was a high risk for induction; thus, she needed a third term abortion but the state she lived in made the procedure illegal (except in extreme medical cases). Her doctor explained that the paperwork invovled would not clear for the procedure in time to save her life. So she was sent to a neighboring state and had to leave family behind during an extremely difficult time and the state further treated her like a criminal and told her if the coroner found any chance that the procedure was done illegally, she, her husband and the doctor would be arrested…Nice for an extremely private and painful moment of loss. But the state never saw that they risked her life by sending her on a medically unaccompanied trip 4 hours from her home. Nothing like medical privacy during a health tragedy.

A number of Republicans in the waiting room “softened” and began to realize that a fish rots from the head down.

Here is a debate issue. First we had to rush to save the investment bankers from themselves. Now we do not have to rush. This wacky statement was made yesteday. Remember, we were slipping into financial catastrophe. Congress had to pass Cash for Goldman Sachs before the first debate. Otherwise, the rich people would be swooning and unhappy. But if we get the money moving again, exactly where is it moving and to who? To me? I do need it more than Fuld, Paulson, the Greenspan’s, and T-Bone Pickens-Your pocket

President Bush, speaking in San Antonio, said the rescue package was designed to unlock the nation’s frozen credit markets ”to get money moving again” through the economy. But he added, ”We don’t want to rush into the situation and have the program not be effective.”

There was one surprise. After all of the repetitive “reporting”, they led into a brief interview with Britt Hume by saying something to the effect that the second debate offers McCain an opportunity to regain the momentum. Hume said he hated to disagree, but the first debate is all that really counts, it is really rare to change a 6-7 point poll lead at this stage, and it appears to be all over. He did say, “still, like the economic collapse, something else dramatic could still change the election.” I was surprised at his raining on the parade his teammates had been conducting all day. I was also alarmed at his hit that somebody might come running in with Bin Ladin’s head or something might blow up.

my understanding is it’s been a lottery type process, but i’m not sure how one got a “lottery ticket”. it is supposed to be a small small small audience, once the VIPs have their spot. the reports around here are that some people won’t find out until today if they will be included, as setting up the stage around hall caused them to not know how much space would be available for audience until last night or today. i know some of the “lottery tickets” were set aside for Belmont students also.
