McCain did not hit the home run he needed. Obama was much more at ease than in the first debate. This is very bad for McCain to lose on his home-turf, formatwise. And he apparently just snubbed Obama on the post-debate handshake. Nice.
And now, the comments!
PeteCO: Talking to Lieberman is not reaching across the aisle, you wanker.
Hugh: System in Washington is broken. McCain should know, he helped break it. Lieberman and bipartisanship. Ugh.
eCAHN: McC's gonna cut defense programs. Bwahahahaha.
cinnamonape: Look at that huge legal foolscap set of crib notes that McCain is trying to use.
cinnamonape: McCain: "I want Meg Whitman…everyone will sell their family heirlooms on Fed-Bay…the new on-line pawn shop."
JimWhite: Squiggly lines don't agree with McCain blaming Obama for bad loans.
kittykitty: Mccain looks like a guy who's trying to get up the nerve to ask a girl for a dance.
kdh22: McCrazy's too short for the chair. Ha!
tbsa: So now the town hall is his best chance. Foreign policy debate was supposed to be his best chance. Why are all of the debates suited for Mcnutjob and not BO?
masaccio: My friends, let's not raise taxes on anybody, ever. What will the International Monetary Fund say about our tax policy when we reach national debt equal to 100% of GNP?
Marion in Savannah: I'm not a doctor, but if I saw an EKG like McCain's CNN lines I'd assume that the patient was dead…
Petrocelli: Johnny Mac keeps setting himself up for BO to knock down … OMG … now he's forgetting to walk and talk at the same time …
RevDeb: this isn't a real town hall meeting. It's a potemkin "debate". It's really nothing more than an extended infomercial.
egaleagle88: I wish obama would point out that average premium is 12K per year. I also wish he would point out the Repubs love of big govt., huge defense spending, the surveillance state, etc.
Rayne: Every time McGeezer invokes the "Taliban", I hear Belafonte singing Day-O… Tally man, Taliban, tally me banana…
JimWhite: McCain's justification for Bomb, Bomb: it was a joke. That joke bombed.
thumperstilitskin1: McCain dances around all the issues and doesn't seem to have a clear view of anything. I'm not even sure he could figure out what to eat for dinner tonight, let alone how to run a country.
msjloyd1: I think the candidates are doing good, but Obama is hitting the points very hard. McCain is making jokes like he's on Saturday Night Live. We've got Tina Fey to impersonate his running mate but whose gonna play him?

GOBAMA!
wheres my quote?
Thrid!
did mccain leave already?
“wheres my quote?”
There you are! I didn’t rate one! I just bogged down the server. :-)
Frist!
Digg this! Digg it now!
any polls up yet?
mcgeezer bailed as soon as it was over - must be past his bedtime
McCain looked like a penguin walking around on the stage and flapping his wings.
So I tune into BBC America’s debate coverage to get a fresh, international perspective, and who’s the first pundit I see and hear?
Joe Klein.
CNN poll is up on its main page.
McCain still sucks the big one and nothing lying bastard blowhart!
One thing I noticed is that McCain often flatlined when he was talking about foreign policy, while “that one” soared.
Had to plug ‘im back into his battery pack. Needle was way low by then.
Me too!
Me want quote-y!
I’m anxious to see the polls. I can’t imagine that McCain did well, but then again, I can’t imagine not having made up your mind yet.
I agree that it was similar to a joke. It had a number of things in common with a joke. It did, however, lack humor.
I thought McCain strengthened towards the end on the Georgia/Russia question, but blew it on Israel. I thought Obama missed an opportunity to point out how few people make more than $250,000. He made with respect to small business, but he needed the number. That number is extremely small, and people will relate to it.
McCain was talking mainly to his base. That and his old age is killing him.
Is that guy who just spoke about affordability an idiot?
There ya go!
I’m just watching the Obamas working the room….pulling ‘em in.
I only have basic cable, what was CNN showing re: viewer reaction? Or any other early surveys? Personally, I thought it was pretty much a draw but given the current trend, that amounts to an Obama victory.
How the hell do you ‘restart your browser’ to watch Ms. Jane on CNN right now? Anyone know?
he has the personality of a nematode
Kudos Eli!!!
Pile on here pups…
By that I mean on CNN’s men/women undecided Ohio voters graph
MSNBC had their won squiggly graph thing going on (but I think it was only online) McCain is tankinhg here too
The contrast between the 2 wives could not be stronger. Michelle talks very comfortably to people and Cindy stands there right behind McC with her hands folded not saying a word.
The dems should get out in force tomorrow morn to point out that McC has been bashing Obama for weeks, yet in a face-to-face meeting, he never mentioned any of the slimy accusations. Then they should all cluck like a chickens.
I drank WAAAAAAY too much TBC during this debate, but McCain kept saying “my friends” and I kept screaming “you’re not my fucking friend, you son of a bitch!”
CBS instant poll:
Obama 39
McCain 27
Wow. he didn’t work the room? That’s not campaigning I can believe in
MSNBC’s focus group in King of Prussia:
Obama wins, 60:40.
McCain on the economy, buying up bad mortgages: The R’s tanked on their like-o-meter. One GoOPer: Needs a better plan than buying up mortgages.
Obama on prioritizing: Dems and independents WAY up, Even R’s up. Oh yeah, Baby!
McCain on nailing Jello: Wow. R’s up, D’s and I’s dipping into negative territory. The D’s and I’s didn’t like it at all. “Being negative doesn’t show where he stands on the issues. Same R: If Obama is more specific, I might vote for him.” “Obama related to me more (an I).”
McCain is toast.
Cnn online: who fared better on tonight’s debate?
McCain 13 percent
Obama 84 percent
CBS poll shows advantage Obama over all and on specific issues.
wow. what’s with Mike Murphy? He looks stoned
Cindy’s just in it for another house.
Okay, I give up on the browser thingy. I’m going to bed. Nite all. As always, had a great time with ya. It’s the only place to come to make a boring debate absolutely freaking hysterical and entertaining! Nite nite. ;-)
The BBC just never quite gets American politics no matter how much they try to act like they do.
Just close your browser window & then re-open it.
Unfortunately, Jane’s finished.
Jane who?
Holy cow. Now that’s some poll numbers! Wow.
I thought Nora O’Donnell was pregnant again? My imagination or what? Anyone know?
The debate was a wash. The field was tilted towards McShame. It ended on McShame touting his bullshit glory. McShame, went and hid out when the fire broke out on the Forrestal. That sorry POS went and hid out then took off AWOL for R&R in Saigon. There is a damn good reason he won’t release his military record - it will demonstrate that he his a f**kin POS>
LINK?
The moving trends were distracting for me.
if anyone’s watching the aftermath, but for one thing michelle was working the crowd while - this really struck me - cindy followed mccain around the room. like a puppy. or a trophy wife.
for another thing, there was a weird exchange between mccain and obama that i missed much of but josh has noted as looking as if mccain refused to shake obama’s hand. frankly when i saw it i wondered if it was the other way around, but i came in as obama stepped back and shook cindy’s hand; mccain did not move toward michelle at all.
weird.
Ewww … Schieffer is positively frightening on HD …
Quit, then relaunch your browser.
Mc really comes across as unhinged whenever the subject turns to open-ended military commitments. Just plain auto-destructs. Giant blind spots.
I did that but it didn’t take. Kept coming up “need to restart browser”. Oh well, like you said…Jane is not on now. LOL A day late and a dollar short as usual. ;-)
Great job, Eli. It was hard to keep up with you. No sooner get to the end of one thread to find out you were well into another. You are the man.
MSNC poll is up on front page. Obama is way up.
wow

McCain left. Obama is still on stage meeting the crowd, and McCain just got up and left.

WTF? C-Span is still showing it, it’s downright weird. Why wouldn’t McCain stay and meet the crowd? We think he may have been so pissed off that he just had to leave. Wow.
You can probably count his nose hairs. For that and other reasons I prefer to lag slightly behind the technology curve.
Did Harold Ford’s lips
leak Botoxget smaller ?he came back after about 5 minutes and then was following bo around - too little too late in working the room
people will remember he left and bo did not
Uh oh, Tweetie’s got a man chrush on Obie.
CBS Instapoll of Independents said 37% Obama 28% McCain. When they asked if any undecideds had affirmed from the debate 15% McCain 14% Obama…but 70% remained befuddled.
tweety -
mccain has a ”menacing” smile.
hehehehe
boa noite Kay
pleaceful rest
Tweety just compared Obama’s smile to McCain’s smile and said McCain comes off as “menacing”. Ouch!!!!!
I noticed Cindy following McCain too. She reminds me of me when my husband works a crowd. She may be very shy.
Thanks, Eli. That was great.
Had to get Cindy’s scrips filled before the pharmacy closes.
post debate KO on now
did he just say that O was blessed by birth with his smile and McCain’s was creepy
A little bit of frosting for the cake, my friends.
It seems that some hometown hero punched the CEO of Lehman Bros. right in the kisser at the gym today.
Superbly eloquent chap!
Maybe we should take up a collection for a bailout and a trophy, for the puncher of course.
http://www.newsnet5.com/money/17641953/detail.html
Okay, I DVR’ed some stupid comedies last night so I could unwind from politics before I try to get to sleep.
So I’d better get to it.
Good night all. Stay hopeful!
yep
KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKeif
ok menacing…creepy was my interpretation
Whoops…misread those numbers. Obama 39 McCain 27.
Nate Silver on Colbert Report tonight.
boa noite
peaceful dreams
what’s not to love?!
i’m no fan of klein’s, but his diatribe against mccain today really blew me away.
he nailed mccain, to the wall. and left him out to dry. it was impressive.
in case you missed it.
http://www.time-blog.com/swamp.....acuda.html
honestly, not to plug the guy; he gives me gas, truly. but he appears to get mccain’s problems.
Thanks, pastfedup, thanks Twain. It was mostly just copying and pasting, really.
The CNN poll that came out earlier today give Obama an 8 point lead nationwide.
hehehhheheehehehehehhheehehehhehee
Shit! i had missed the whole, ‘that one’ comment. wow, what an asshole
I wanna see Jane!
Where’s Jane?
But what I want to know is — who’s going to play Brokaw on Saturday Night Live this week?
By that man a drink !
I think that actually happened last week or so, right after Lehman Brothers declared bankruptcy. I saw the story yesterday.
klein has stopped drinking the kool-aid and has become re-acquainted with the truth - not sure of the why but i like it
i know im not clever enuf…..skulks off
Bill Bennett in a girdle?
“Buy” … putting down Schnapps Flasche …
This is the problem with doing best-ofs. For what it’s worth, I absolutely feel your pain.
And Keith flat out nailed him on it! :-)
This guy.
Eli !
Great work tonight !
hehehheehehehehehehehehehee
It Mccain was serious about being the president, why did he leave the room so soon?
Don’t care. Flowers and candy to the reborn.
Thanks, Petro!
just use a gumball machine and slap a hair piece on it
that mini guffaw was to you fearless leader
I resemble that remark.
raises her foggy head
OH GET A GRIP!
u da man, Eli!
DA MAN!!!!!
thanks. saved me the trip over to Kos. their snap numbers have been trending with the overnights the last two debates
MSNBC Online Poll
Obama 87.7%
McCorpse 10.2 %
link
Sundowners.
He wanted to catch the Buffet before it closed down … Lime Jello after a debate is a time honored tradition for Johnny Mac …
Thanks for the link.
Howard has let his hair grow in…maybe Rupert could help him out
I’d sooner vote for a gumball machine. It at least serves one useful purpose.
Well folks…back to grading papers! G’night. No collapse…if anything Obama likely solidified his support and built trust. That’s what Reagan (sorry to say) did after debating Carter. He showed he wasn’t “erratic” or completely incapable of discussing policy. Obama did the same thing here, and actually showed a better grasp of most things. McCain looked like he had irritable bowel syndrome.
He tried to pull a stunt with the “Buy Up all the mortgages, right NOW” gambit. If he really believes this why didn’t he make that a key component of the bail-out (wait… he called it the “rescue package” didn’t he)…or sponsor a Bill to this effect in the Senate?
The “bomb bomb bomb Iran” song is older than probably anyone here realizes. It first came up during the “Hostage Crisis” after the fall of the Shah, and we all used to sing it over beers at the Officer’s Club in the Philippines. Ah, misspent youth.
It was a “cute” ditty that was something we repeated because it made us feel less impotent than we were, and we were 22, invulnerable and trusted with weapons systems of Armageddon-like power and full of San Miguel beer. McCain, I am sure picked it up back then, and was stupid enough to sing it on-camera during a “town hall” I believe. Macacca much there McGollum?
KO is on that one now.
Night all. Sleep well. The nice guy won by a mile!
So did Olberman in comments before the debate. He absolutely RAKED Mcmean for the wretched, reckless tenor of his campaign of late, with specifics. Well worth revisiting. I presume there should be a utoob.
She’d have the biggest doll house in the country to play with.
YeeHaw !
okay what words did you drink on….??
Obama up 84-13 in early voting at CNN.com.
Thanks, siri!
And I just don’t see any way that McCain won tonight. So much for his legendary mastery of the town hall format and how he was totally going to kick Obama’s ass.
To be fair, McCain supporters probably aren’t hanging around the MSNBC site.
Lots of replay of the That One moment….that it’s the kind of gaff to be remembered.
well said…good sleep
Jo Fish !
McCain has been in the Senate for 29 years, and yet he refuses to use the common etiquette as a Senator to recognize the term used as “Distinguish Gentleman” to Senator Obama…
There’s even another debate wrap up post, I’m not surprised after 6 live threads…! ;-)
he seemed ill
Any online polls at Fox?
Valley of the Dolls?
You might want to watch her more closely during campaign appearances.
They deserve each other imo.
I’m usin’ rabbit ears.
Hey, Petro! Wazzup?
“and”
and
“but”
It started with McCain tapping Obama on the back. Obama turned to shake his hand. Then it looked like McCain noticed that Cindy was coming up and steered her towards shaking Obama’s hand. I figured he was being gentlemanly and that then the two men would shake hands, but Obama turned away after that. That’s what it looked like to me.
I just looked and evidently not. They have a “Who Won The Debate” comment section and roughly 4 of the first half dozen comments said Obama won. That was all the time I could spend before I had to resurface for air.
ass can’t kick ass Eli.
it’s a physics thing
ya know?
lol
had to pee?
pardon. it’s late and i’m still in training.
agreed…she dispatched all siblings from the will
hahahahahahaahahahahahahaha
How bad was that crash and burn?
Didn’t the rabbit miss them? (Probably not during the McCain segments…)
Most excellent job tonight, Eli. Thank you.
how do you republicans feel right now? I seriously want to know?
I sure wish this was the last debate. Two out of three should be all it takes to walk away without anymore torture for them or for us! IOW, Obama already won both, why bother with the third one, especially since Biden won the VP debate!
Did anyone else think McSame was trying to disrupt and rattle Obama by jumping up, making odd quick movements, pacing tw’ Obama and the people while O was talking, etc.
Whatever. Didn’t seem to bother Obama at all. I liked O’s cool, quiet, laid-back smile pointed directly at mcsame’s back when latter was talking. I thot it irritated Mcsame mebbe. Rather like being watched by a big lion from behind while you try to concentrate; cool.
…with friendly crowds and softball questions that fed directly into his talking points.
wow. nasty. i’d forgotten about that.
Hi Adie. Naw, I think McCain is just spastic.
Looks like most people have wandered upstairs.
Thanks a lot. How am I supposed to purge this from my brain?
Poor horse, there’s got to be a better way to make a living.
why? to entertain the growing masses of Obama fans, and practice for talking with Putipute.
At this rate, I’d LOVE to watch another. Obama OWNS the realm at this point.
Mcsame is acting like a pouty old coot, for some odd reason. heh.
Kayln…It means to shut down your browser…just click it closed and
after a minute click it back on. Go back to firedoglake and get CNN on
and find the pix of Jane and there you are…you can watch both the debate
and see and hear Jane….she looked great….
Have a good night.
Moesie
Whoo hoo! I got a comment highlight. Except my name is “legaleagle88,” not “egaleagle88.” That doesn’t even make sense. ;-)
methinks that’s a pretty expensive plane this time.
Did you notice that McCain was confused again on where the exit was? His wife had to point to the exit. He then immediately left the stage leaving Obama to work the crowd with hand shakes and photo ops.
Dennis
It now has Obama at 83.26 % and McSame at 14.75 %
http://www.cbsnews.com/
The use of the term “that one” was racist and uncalled for. I hope McCain can climb out of the pit of political oblivion that he so richly deserves for his awkward pandering to racist in his past two appearances with his much more presidential opponent.
