Twenty years ago, Barack Obama was on the spur of the moment doing this, giving a complete stranger enough money to make it back to Norway to be with her husband. Being a good Samaritan. Or as the McCain campaign would have you believe, helping one of those famous dangerous Norwegian terrorist.
And what was John McCain up to 20 years ago?
Why hanging out and greasing the wheels for his buddy and future felon Charlie Keating.
McCain's former benefactor and close
personal friend.
Oh, and look, there's even a documentary about it! Thanks for walking into that trap by telegraphing your coming mud-tossing Maverick.

Actually, it was 21 years ago that FSLIC audited Lincoln S&L in the office of the law firm I worked at. I had previously wondered why so many of the S&L’s property files were missing appraisals and environmental reports - then I learned why - there were none. Who needs due diligence when property values will only go up . . . ?
seems to me the obama campaign might want to hear your story spoonful
Excellent contrast here! Just super!
Lots of the yucky stuff hitting the mcShame fan today…. That should heat things up when the old guy debates tomorrow.
i’m actually more concerned about the millions of people who were fucked over last week. imo, obama’s most positive qualities are named mccain and palin. it takes a ticket that bad to make obama look good after his actions the last few months.
I saw Keating brought up by Obama surrogate several times on Sunday in response to Palins “palling around with terrorists” line. The McCain surrogate’s response, in each case, was to state that McCain had been acquitted of that charge. Yet in each case no one, not the host nor the Obama surogate, pointed out the obvious difference. Whether McCain was acquitted is irrelevant to the fact that the conman Keating was one of McCain’s closest friends. The Obama surrogates need to be schooled on how to respond to the “acquitted” line.
Good morning, pups. It’s [retch] Kristol, Cohen and Krugman. That waste of perfectly good oxygen Wrong Way Billy yakked up a fur ball he calls “The Wright Stuff.” He says he spoke to Gov. Sarah Palin recently. She said a few things that were politically provocative and offered advice to John McCain for the next debate: “Have fun.” Then added, “Take the gloves off.” Yeah, that’s the ticket… Get even nastier than you’ve already gotten… Mr. Cohen gives us “Kiplin’ vs. Palin,” and says some truths seem self-evident. But let’s face it, the whole Wall Street debacle was based on the fathomless human ability to disregard facts and believe in cloud-cuckoo-land. Mr. Krugman writes about “Health Care Destruction,” and says Republicans still hate Medicare and have not been able to kill it. Since that is out, John McCain is going after insurance of nonelderly Americans instead.

The coffee and tea are ready, and the biscuits are out of the oven. 106 days to go. By this time next week we’ll be down into double digits. I’m looking forward to Jan. 20, 2009 with more anticipation that I did as a kid waiting for the last day of school… Have a great day.
look at us selise, so disappointed in the democratic candidate for president, yet the republican candidate is so depraved we do our best to get the democratic candidate elected in spite of his flaws
28 days, if there is no “catastrophe” we elect a new man into office, one who we hope has the strength, the balls, the integrity, the temerity to bring this country back from the brink of becoming a fascist state
we hold our breath in hope
scar and buchanan ranting about NYT calling palin “stupid” every day but it would be O.K. if they said she wasn’t qualified. Or something to that effect. Personally, I can’t see a hair’s worth of difference between being stupid and being unqualified……but, hey, I’m just some stoopid leftist elite; whadda I know? *g*
Today’s was the *mother* of all hair balls! :-(
Come to think of it, was that noise mcsame made the other day when complimenting palin on the debate another version of a hairball GAK?
page A13, natch.
She’s stupid and unqualified.
i do not share your hope in obama. my hope resides with the people.
not saying my hope is any more realistic than yours though. let’s just take hope where we can find it - so long as it doesn’t require us to stop thinking.
gotta keep sending bucks to the MIC…. We need to deter nuclear attacks. yeah right. We’ve been paying for that lie for 40 years now.
another fascinating post from bernhard:
CNN just played what sounded like the entire clip of palin’s rant about Obama being a terrorist and then immediately cut away to something totally different…….it’s easy to see which way the stench in gonna blow in their “fair and balanced” wind today. :-(
Selise, you will never see an non compromised candidate in any major party get the nomination. They are sellouts to get there. You do see some critters who appear directly to voters like Denis and Bernie who don’t need to deal to get ahead… but they can’t get much further than they are now.
What we need to do is stop the naked capitalist fascists like Bush, Cheney, McCain and their ilk and shame the sellouts to abandoning their corporate supporters in favor of the people. Not easy, but within the realm of possibility. Never could happen with a republican. They are too far gone.
but dog forbid we would send bucks to keep people in their homes or pay for their health care.
I personally think the negative stuff will not work this time around. I think the Dems will punch back pretty hard. It should be fun to see what gets dredged up in the sling fest.
This Keating Economics video is going to be interesting,
good morning!
Of course not, they are not their base… their base is the corporate board room and high net worth individuals who get richer and richer on our tax dollars. That’s how crony capitalism works.
Glad you made your opinion in this matter clear.
Some of us were wondering exactly where you stand.
it seems to me they are deliberately making the planet ripe for a nuclear war
they really do want to be the instruments of their ridiculous interpretation of “Armageddon”
they are dispensationalists who actually believe Armageddon is a good thing and they believe they can force the hand of god
I agree with you, I think there is so much amo that can be tossed back in the mccain direction, he who starts the negative loses
so long as obama’s response is quick, on point and brutal, mccain’s lead slips further with every attack
the real test is going to be the debate, obama is NOT fast on his feet, mccain is going to be armed with attacks that obama cannot be prepared, some of the attacks will be pure lies concerning associations obama will not be able to have facts in hand
let’s hope obama has the right team to prepare for a real debate AND a debate attack laden
i want to stop them both.
btw, i get the sell out bit. i just have a line about how far it’s ok to go with that. and for me, the 4th amendment and economic well being of the people are over that line. i know that each person has their own line and i don’t think there is an objective “right” answer on where it ought to be - so long as we all have a line somewhere.
chris hedges has a great piece out today: Dennis Kucinich on the Democrats’ Bailout Betrayal
LOL!
good morning mack.
Just guessing here, but I’ll bet that REALLY pisses God off… and you don’t want her made at you…
from Nouriel Roubini: Financial and Corporate System is in Cardiac Arrest: The Risk of the Mother of All Bank Runs
Good morning Firepups!
John McCain has a domestic terrorist on his campaign right now:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....03812.html
Rick Davis should be in prison for blowing up Wall Street!
Sarah Palin bringing up Ayers is no different than the pretty white woman back in the 50’s screaming that the black man raped her!
I really despise the America-hating McCain campaign.
McCain was NOT acquitted. As usual, the McCain campaign lies. He was acquitted of impropriety.
However, McCain was “censured” for his conduct in connection with the Keating 5, for poor judgment.
Morning All :)
The DIGG is open.:)
right now she seems fine with it, let’s hope she has a plan for those who would force her hand
Washington Journal this morning.

what did you think of the bin laden piece on 60 minutes last nite?
um, make that “Cuba”
The curtain has been removed and we can all see the great oz of Wall street, broke, insolvent, in debt, unable to make their credit (card) payments on time.
The people see it and are mightily pissed and I suspect as the crisis unfolds, as more layers of the onion are peeled back the people will be more and more pissed at the system which they believed in like lemmings. But that was fine as long as they lived in a bubble.
But there are no bubbles now and so reality is coming home to roost for the people who have been talking on their cell phones in from of their flat screen TVs eating plastic food, driving gas gizzling cars in front of house they can’t afford and over paid for because they we all bubble believers.
Reality is going to change people fast in the next few months and it remains to be seen what they do. The disaster capitalists are waiting for their’s, but this is also an opportunity to get this thing back on track.
Maybe leaders like Denis will be taken seriously, Or Bernie Sanders… People are catching on to the BS, but they need some ideas to gel around and strong leaders to show the way. We are a nation of followers. Now we need a leader.
Masaccio has a beauty over at Oxdown Gazette
http://oxdown.firedoglake.com/diary/462
i don’t think we’ll get the leader we need until this changes.
Bin Laden dislikes what The USA is doing in the ME. I agree with him. I don’t support blowing up people, but destroying property and the means of oppression of the oppressor is fine with me.
I think Osama died and is mostly a myth now useful for both sides. It’s rather funny how these myths motivate people.
kucinich is wrong
investing in our future gives a positive return, this bill makes us need it more not less
this bill is norquist’s wet dream, he has speculated that the way to eliminate government and services is to make debt so great the society insists it can’t afford services
this is the reverse of reality however, the more we owe the more we need to invest in ourselves
It was very interesting, my son did not get to see it as he was dealing with some scout stuff. He is going to check out the book. It fits with a lot that was going on. The author did not know who rejected his plans. I think that it was a result of the turf wars between Rummy and Tenet and between military intelligence and CIA.
Workers are not empowered in the culture to think or exercise any control over their lives. At best they have been sedated by consumerism.
Have you seen:
Century of the Self
If not you need to see it to understand how the West has turned people into mindless consumers of products and image including their own “self image”.
KeatingEconomics.com?
I think Obama just said “bring it on, mother f-er.”
I used to only refer to McInsane as McKeating. Seems like it might be a good time to dust that one off again. It’s crunch time!
perris has to head out, will see all later
foothillsmike, I would like you and your son’s opinion of the 60 minute tora bora piece that aired last nite, if you have an opinion on it I’m comming back later to this thread to read it
see all later
ah, read this before I left.
I hope he gets to see it on tape…see you later
perris @45 - i don’t understand why you think kucinich is wrong.
sandero @47 - yes, i’ve seen “century of the self.”
hey, i was raised Catholic and got away from that for a long time. Recently started goin’ back to church to see what if anything might happen. (They haven’t closed the deal. a ways to go. But it’s not about “the Church.” Anyway…………………) Now, when I was goin’ to church first tome ’round, this was the season when a priest would get up and tell us that we can’t vote for a candidate who isn’t against abortion. And we can’t vote for a candidate who says they are personally opposed to abortion but doesn’t do anything to end it. We can’t support a candidate who would uphold the law as per Roe v. Wade. Never heard a priest mention a candidate by name but i know people who have. Now, this offended some Catholics in the pew. Didn’t offend most because most weren’t in the pew to begin with. But of those who were in the pew the majority paid it no particular attention. So yesterday it was that time of year. I take a bulletin after mass, open it and see:
Can Catholics vote for a candidate who supports abortion?
Here we go again. I read on to the next sentence:
It depends.
Well, that’s different. Has my attention.
Being only against abortion means you are anti-abortion. The church position, though, is pro-life. A pro-life candidate is not only against abortion but also against the death penalty, embryonic stem cell research, euthanasia, human cloning, genocide, torture, unjust war, and racism. A pro-life person is for human life and dignity from womb to tomb.
Now, I’m not on board about abortion and stem cell research and cloning sounds creepy. More, father:
The Bush administration, while anti-abortion, is not pro-life. It has failed the full Catholic teaching about the dignity of life which calls us to “oppose torture, unjust war, and the use of the death penalty” (par. 45). It has not condemned torture, it ignored a special envoy from Pope John Paul II in 2002 not to invade Iraq, and it has sought to apply the death penalty to more crimes.
I don’t agree with all the elements of the church’s pro-life position. But this is the first time in the run-up to an election I’d ever heard/read
at mass that there was more to that position than abortion and that a candidate’s stance on abortion is neither automatically disqualifying nor should it automatically get a Cathoilc’s vote.
Very surprising and pleasantly so. More of this, guys.
sorry about that lenghty comment at 52 but that was a first for me and i was glad for it.
As is that nancy poof’n'pecker [sic]. CNN just keeps getting worse and worse this morning……replay after replay of palin’s terrorist sh!t with no substantial rebuttal. :-(
*click* goes the clicker
Yes and let’s talk about Cindy’s convicted felon dad who introduced McShame to Keating. I also have some unanswered questions; when the congressman who McShame replaced resigned, Cindy Lou rushed out and bought a house in his district - who paid for that house? Cindy Lou is keeping her fiscal matters private. Is she involved in deals w/ Keating and/or other unsavories?
Yes, I’ve long suspected the binLaden myth, especially when the apparent “official videos,” which would be released right before elections and such, showed a man that looked like a completely different person in some. Without an actual Press in America to call this out, the dudes will abide.
In a way, doesn’t really matter though outside of PR benefit, since terrorism will still exist from all quarters whether bin Laden is alive or not, so the “War on Terrorism” is the perfect villain for the Military Industrial Complex, who are the biggest terrorists in history. The dance can go on forever!
But McCain knew this might happen. Curious as to what he does in response.
This maybe?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoOK3prNrZI
thanks. been listening to liptik and finding it very interesting.
I agree with Denis. I either mis typed of mis stated my position. I am a DK supporter 100%
They all suck. All of ‘em.
Lehmans Fuld to testify this morning:
CSPAN 1 10:00 am
man, can’t quit this place but I have to leave after this post
the fact that we have been robbed doesn’t lesson our need to invest in our future in increases that need.
we absolutely MUST have a “new deal”, we must invest in our infrastructure, our health, alternative energy.
the fact that they gave away our assets with this bill does not change that fact
in times of plenty you have the luxery of investing or not investing
when you are short funds that’s when you need to invest most of all, those who do not invest will struggle for eternity
the bill will never be paid on these buyouts, unless we invest in ourselves
we need to learn from this mistake, tryo to unoculate against it happening again
off for the day
I am a dk supporter also but I do not believe this bill prevents us from investing in our future, it necesitates it
And speaking of reality, it’s gonna be interesting to see if assorted comments from the talking hairdo’s (including georgie will) about people just now getting their third quarter investment statements get followed up on. Someone on the idjit box this morning made the generalization that joe six-pack is gonna find 25% of whatever they saved gone….gone….gone……..
yeah. sometimes the truth is reported. but why not every single time? no excuse for not doing it. say what you will about matthews but as he tells us all the time, he’s been around politics along time. after the debate, it seemed to me that he was absolutely offended by palin. don’t think this will play well with him either. i only mention Matthews because i think there are others like him will speak up and call a spade a spade here. hope he does. hope others do.
The fact that the polls clearly show Palin lost the debate on the merits? Forget it. I’m smitten, just like Rich Lowry. She’s Xena Santorum Palin, the Culture warrioress. Who cares about a little thing like reality when you can have pseudo-facts? And who cares what the eggheads think?
That’s from Mark Steyn.
Who the fuck is he?
My problem with tweety is ya never know which way he’s gonna blow; the only certainty is that he will blow HARD. That garbajz he spewed about the codpiece business……..he could just as easily have pulled a rich lowry reaction to palin. It’s wonderful when he *does* support our side of the fence but, for consistency, gimme Rachel or Amy any day……and without the huffin’ ‘n puffin’.
absolutely true. he may look at this attack on obama strictly from the political point of view in the sense of “will ot work?” and if so, then it’s good, as in good politics
We do need to restructure the economy in order make it sustainable.
The global economy hurt our workers. Can we bring those jobs back from China to the USA? We should.
Can we inject fed projects into the economy to put people to work.. repairing infrastructure, developing a new clean energy industrial base with oddles of jobs. We should
Can we expect that workers get pensions and security in their retirement after a life time of work? We should.
Can we expect to provide good education, decent affordable house and health care to all? Why not? Can we get rid of the idea of a home as an investment and change it into a place to live? and not live off of? I would hope so.
We certainly need to restructure our economy for the people (workers) and not for capital - the owners of property and industry. The regan revolution was a total failure. We get it. Now let’s move on to some GOOD solutions and economy models.
He’s another neocon who never had a date.
So why doesn’t the Obama campaign SAY THAT!?!?
Perris, this might explain a bit about why she feels the way she does.
That’s coming up. Check out www.KeatingEconomics.com.
