Right on cue, Sarah Palin said yesterday that Obama pals around with terorrists.
And then this morning on "Face the Nation," Heather Wilson charged that Obama is unpatriotic, that he’s a blame-America-firster — and that he trashed America overseas.
Nevermind that Obama’s speeches in Europe were objectively unabashedly pro-America. And forget Wilson’s assclownish notion that our nation’s popularity is directly related to how loudly our President screams "USA!" in foreign countries.
But I don’t recall Wilson complaing when George Bush broke the "no politics overseas " rule in Israel, when he accused Obama and the Democratic Party of being modern day Chamberlains as the Nazis Iranians gear up for Holocaust II.
Expect a lot more of this over the next four weeks. It’s all they have left.

What has been devastatingly effective is the teaming up of Republicans and talk radio. Heather’s and Sarah’s observations will play round the clock, 24/7 until better ones come along.
A rightwing hatejock lamented recently, while analyzing one of the debates with a liberal guest that all he had left to work with was bigotry. And the liberal guest (he has his own show on the same station) did not say anything. Nothing.
They are the pair that filled the 4 to 5 hour and their paychecks come from bosses who only need ratings.

If you mean Heather Wilson, her congressional service ends in January, since she gave up her seat to try for her mentor’s US Senate seat, and failed in the primary. So we are, temporarily, done with her. Although she seems to have a promising career ahead of her as a lie-spewing talking head, which is a very popular species on the Sunday gasbag hours.

Unlike the VP debate where I figured Palin would do well given the format (no follow up to questions), this debate might well be the one to have your popcorn ready for.

It’s pretty clear from the Saddleback Forum, the first presidential debate, and the VP debate that McCain intends to exploit the free advertising offered by these events to disseminate his campaign talking points. No thought or unscripted speaking required. They portray the fact that Obama actually listens to the questions and gives considered responses as a sign of uncertainty. Fortunately, it appears a significant number of people are beginning to perceive the shallowness of the so-called maverick.

I think increasing numbers are also coming to realize that in this context “maverick” means batshit crazy.
I’d thought for a long time the physical contrast would be something like Kennedy and Khrushchev. The way it’s playing out though, it seems the contrast in their manner, cool and collected vs hot and pissy is drawing more attention. Of course, the same could also have been said about Kennedy and Khrushchev.

I think some of this reflects my comment at 73. Early in the race this difference was working in McCain’s favor (”passionate” versus “cold”). As things go on, they are increasingly seeing it in terms of rational/irrational.
That’s where I think this format may help John get crazy.

I agree. Especially since he cannot control the audience and questions the way he does in his own “town halls”. Even there he tends to either simply ignore the question or go off the rails whenever an audience member goes off script.
We can hope, although I’d be surprised if the audience isn’t screened like potential jurors, with both sides given the right to reject them.
In that earlier town hall, when the preacher stood up and asked McCain about calling his wife the c-word, McCain simply blew him off. Of course back then his campaign wasn’t doing a nosedive.

Got Ivy MS so I could stay home and be a subsistence farmer, pretty much. Learning lots about “microclimate” in the classroom and lab became an incredibly useful gardening tool, leading to a pile of blues at the county fair every year. Got danged good at lining up the best plate of 12 perfectly matched little green beans, year after year. Pushed the poor judge so far that, one year as he slapped yet another blue on the things, he shook his head at their glowing perfection and grumped to no-one in particular. “Amazing, but if you really want a nice big plate of beans to eat, I’d grab THESE over HERE” – pointing to some nice big tough, knobby, MANly (?) beans. The professional ethologist in me knew I’d pushed him far enough, so our beans were a little bigger the next year.
1st-born needed me more than the sci. community, heh. We had a tight budget, but never regretted the choice. Had a blast experimenting. Freezing, canning, drying, fermenting (sometimes on purpose). Growing our own mung beans to save for making sprouts, garbanzos for our hummus spread, … Hey, the kid grew up somewhat fitfully, but the public schools were good and were rapidly learning “hyper” doesn’t equate with “undisciplined” nor “bad” – he’s now wowing his bosses as a largely self-taught computer genius, and he’s happy.
His younger bro., I wager, is the only principal oboe of 2 symphony orchestras (each part time) – who happens to have a trophy for showing his 4H Alpine milking goat – in the whole YOOnited States!
BTW, both “kids” vote regularly, and they see to it their friends do also.
Sometimes I have to look up precinct boundaries and judge’s leanings for them but, otherwise, they’re self-motivated somethin’ fierce. A good thing to see. They’re also very angry, but still remain realistic and positive in their approach to whatever they will have to face. I figure that’s all for the good. They can’t be fooled, and they won’t give up.
This is a great country. BUT(!) We’ve got some serious tweaking to do (AGAIN!?! – after losing the 2 Kennedys and MLK so horribly, and Nixon so, so belatedly but appropriately heaped with scorn…
Now THIS current crew!?! The worst ever in my lifetime, anyway. The behaviorist in me marvels and recoils all at the same time at their insane greed and casual cruelty. By training, I observe without judging, with the “lower” forms of life.
But it boggles the mind how we could end up with those currently in power, and those other 2 who dare to pretend they have the credentials to carry us … [WHERE?!]
We simply MUST elect Obama/Biden. And then, yes, we’ll continually watch and judge everything they do. We know we must, after the history we’ve endured, and allowed the world to suffer. But it’s also important to cheer them on and to thank them when they try hard and do well. I like what I have observed about their intentions so far. I’m glad Obama is at the top of the ticket rather than the other way around. This way, Biden should… should rise to the occasion for sure. We’ve been disappointed sometimes in the past.
