Pardon me while I sprain my wrist patting myself on the back. But hey, is it really bragging if it’s true?
When the first Obama-McCain debate was in progress, I was one of the few voices who kept saying, in real time, that Obama was doing very well and that his refusal to retort in kind to McCain’s ill-mannered stupidities was playing well with viewers at home. Sure enough, the instant polling of uncommitted viewers showed that they liked Obama’s calm marshalling of facts in their proper context a lot more than McCain’s smirking evasions and rude mugging for the camera.
We’ve just had the Biden-Palin debate, and we’ve just had similar results: Biden’s relaxed yet professional demeanor trumped Palin’s evasions, lies, and Liberace-like winks at the camera and the television audience behind it.
Here’s why: People might have been in a mood to put up with cutesy-wootsy stuff back in 2000, when the nation was prosperous thanks to Bill Clinton. They might have willingly taken a flyer on somebody like Jesse Ventura or Arnold Schwarzenegger back then. They aren’t going to put up with it now, not with Bush’s financial and military quagmires to fix.
In such an environment, the job of the debating candidate is to show that he or she is a competent, serious, sophisticated person. Obama and Biden succeeded at this. McCain and Palin did not — in fact, they could not, and instead fell back on winking, smirking, and other efforts to avoid actually and honestly answering the questions that they were asked.

Clowns scare me.
pw, I have to admit, I thought obama was doing terrible till I read the polls immediately after and then the huge bump he recieved post debate.
but this debate I saw biden as the clear winner, I thought his responses and reactions were indeed just what the doctor ordered
for instance, when she said “obama voted against funding the troops” biden came back with “mccain voted the same as obama”
bing
when she said there would be tax increases biden said there would be tax savings
biden didn’t let the real attacks go by, he responded and exposed those attacks, I wanted to see more of that from obama
anyway, has there been a post debate bump again for obama?
then you must read steven king’s “it”
good book
Tuesday Obama has a chance to nail the coffin shut and Friday the special prosecuter in Alaska is going to make his report. Maybe the following week McShame will pull out of the lower 48 – don’t think Hawaii (that exotic place) is in play either.
I am hoping his staff has obama and biden together exchaning ideas for the next debate
hey, here’s an interesting question;
who do you think obama has playing mccain in his mock debate?
Hi, Since the next debate is a townhall format, does that mean that all types of questions will be proposed? Not to be elitist but if the hall is filled with folks from middle Tennessee does that mean the questions might not have the depth as Lehrer’s did? Also it seems that the format might not allow for follow-up questions.
I for one, want a leader who will wink and mince at world leaders like Kim Jong Il and Vladimir Putin.
It will be so homey and refreshing! Dontacha think?
Talk about an embarrassment.
-G
Yes. I just hope the “very serious people” keep calling out McCain and Palin for what they really are.
Jack-in-the-box! >g
I loathe clowns too, it’s called coulrophobia, so buzz off, Bozo.
hmmm, there is a jack in the box in steven king’s “it”
interesting
Thanks PW. I was insulted by the lies and the arrogant smirking. With Palin, I kept feeling like it was a popular but not-so-bright middle school girl up on stage, like ya know??
Mc$hame was just too angry and mean.
Time to put some adults in charge.
October 11, 2004
WASHINGTON – The Commission on Presidential Debates’ DebateWatch voter education program continues to convene citizens in their communities to watch and discuss the presidential debates. To date, approximately 16,000 people in 700 DebateWatch discussion groups throughout 48 states nationwide have participated. Of those, roughly 2,600 people in 300 groups responded directly to the October 8 town hall meeting presidential debate. The citizens shared their feedback through an online questionnaire.
Preliminary data for Friday night’s presidential debate show that participants reported Iraq and national security to be the most useful issue (34%) addressed. Economic issues were second (26%); healthcare was third (13%); and the environment and stem cell research were evenly ranked as the fourth most valuable issue (8% each) addressed during the debate.
In addition to providing feedback on the debate they just watched, DebateWatch participants have taken the opportunity to suggest topics for the final debate on October 13. The ultimate topic selection remains at the sole discretion of the independent moderator. Combined domestic topic suggestions from the September 30, October 5, and October 8 debates include: jobs and the economy (24%), education (16%), healthcare (15%), energy/environment (9%), taxes (5%), and Social Security (4%).
TexBetsy,
I suspect that is why the swing to Obama in the polls. My husband and I most likely will lose our business with what is going on right now. If we do make it to next year, God help us, if McCain is president, because we will be doomed for sure.

Thank God the debate was ninety minutes long. It gave everyone plenty of time to figure out that Phalin’ was a nauseating fraud.
Good Morning Phoenix Woman and Firedogs,
may I pile on here PW ?
based on their sterling decision making to date, I think McCain will come out even angrier, negative, and more condescending on Tuesday night
ps – caught some good news about your Senate race downstairs – woo-hoo !
Alexander Cockburn queries:
Will a decisive chunk of the American electorate decide that between a half-mad former POW tormented with PTSD and dying of melanoma and a stable, centrist, Harvard-educated half-black man, they’d trust their basic instincts and go with the all-white nut who might well blow up the planet?
Meanwhile in the Middle East, the region is boiling once again.
There was a pretty large scale engagement between the Turks and Kurds. Large enough for President Gul to return from a state visit abroad.
Also, rumors that Hamas is ready to launch an effort to wrest the West Bank from Fatah.
How come no one ever calls McCain when he says that “there COULD be destabilization in the Middle East” if we leave. There IS destabilization John, and it’s gotten much worse since you and the Hack Pack started playing Global God.

more than one of my female guests were overheard yesterday characterizing Palin as “snotty” -
The Surge. – McCain-Palin
I’m listening to a panel on public diplomacy on cspan. I’ve never heard so many words spent saying absolutely nothing. I keep listening, hoping that someone will make a real point and that I will learn something about the subject. My short version of public diplomacy: propaganda.
Thanks PW.
The Wise Pundits say VP debates don’t matter so who cares if Biden won. Well, I do because a. these are dire times and b. even if I liked McCain (I choke just typing that) but even if I like him, Palin is not up to the job after he croaks in office. No matter how “likable” she is (and she isn’t).
Age matters.
Tuesday will be the death knell for McCain if he continues to refuse to look at Obama. The meme is out there now and people, even some Republicans, are on notice. He looks mean, small and nasty, even racist. I don’t think he can get away with too much more of that condescending behavior. I think it’s partially why Obama’s numbers are surging.
Sorry to hear that. Way too many people are struggling right now.
no surprise here.
McCain is too chauvinist to realize that picking a trophy VP isn’t going to go over well with the female voters his handlers say he needs to win. I doubt his own camp respects her that much.
Think that wisdom matters more
I volunteer to count the number of times McCain mutters “horseshit” on Tuesday.
Joan Walsh of Slate was the first person I heard to bring that up on the air. She asks a republic strategist David Gregory’s Red Show if she thought that a nasty tone is the way to go with the way the American people are feeling right now.
yes. sorry, I meant to say that McCain’s age matters and is a factor on whether undecideds are confident that he’ll survive his term.
I wasn’t very clear. sorry.
How about counting my friends also.
Will Rich “Fap-Fap” Lowry commenting on the McCain debates?

Palin released two years of tax returns late yesterday.
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/….._1003.html
“be” commenting…..
Because I don’t know how to count that high. *g*
Good Morgan, PW!
The following proves beyond doubt the hypothesis that I have long held. Some will call it a conspiracy theory. I simply call it conspiracy.
Bush: Plan B
The simmering tension in that global rathole the middle east has always been Karl Rove’s ultimate trump card. Give Rove a big flare up and he can finally rolled out his Nationalist Party. And yes, Nationalist means Nazi.
The Palin Effect has been short lived; even the Republicans say so:
“If you turn the clock back two or two and half weeks, you could make a plausible argument that if a couple of things go our way we will lose three to four Senate races,” said one Republican strategist. “Now we will lose six to eight.” Polling in most Senate races over the past 14 days has shown a five-point decline for the Republican candidate, the strategist said.”…In the House, most vulnerable Republicans opposed the version that failed on Monday, as well as the revamped legislation that passed easily yesterday. But in the Senate, which voted Wednesday, just two vulnerable Republicans, Sens. Elizabeth Dole (N.C.) and Roger Wicker (Miss.), opposed the bill (along with the only Democrat who is seen as endangered, Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu).
Seven Republicans who are being targeted for defeat by Democrats backed the plan: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.), and Sens. Saxby Chambliss (Ga.), Ted Stevens (Alaska); Norm Coleman (Minn.); Gordon Smith (Ore.), Susan Collins (Maine) and John E. Sununu (N.H.). http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..03699.html
lol. I’ll take “greed” for something new to his vocabulary.
PW – Here’s a question: Did Sarah ‘memorize’ her Debate, like a Script?
I challenge anyone to go back and study her performance – which doesn’t wear well on review, btw – and see for themselves if she’s ‘live’ with the Issues, or ‘canned’ and forcing her narrative on the Debate.
One of the first things she does when she comes out on stage is tell Ifill and Biden: “I might not answer your questions like you expect me to.”
The Wurlitzer bashed Ifill all week, to make certain there would be no ‘follow-up’ questions. Why? Sarah doesn’t do ‘extemporaneous’ very well – as proved in the Gibson and Couric interviews – and it would have messed-up her hitting her marks in her Script.
Still, Ifill calls her out for not answering the question asked, several times – as if the three of them were not at the same Debate. And, in the second half of the Debate, when Sarah does ad-lib ‘on the fly’ answers – they’re non-sense.
So, if anyone rewinds her – asking yourself “Is this Live, or is it Memorex?” I think they’ll ’see’ for themselves.
She’s a Bad Actress.
Listened to that and thought of Palin and that debate flow chart…… and ended up on the foodnetwork watching Jamie cooking asparagus….
rofl. I’m recalling one of the bozo bloopers where a kid literally said “up yours, clownie” to Bozo.
Sounds like a good start for a drinking game…
not to be confused with Coulterphobia – fear of a specific clown :D
Many white millionaire Republicans hate/fear the idea of a black President AND paying higher taxes. Many have saved $200 and $300K each year of Bushco. They dread paying taxes again like a kid dreads the beginning of school.
McCain thought Obama punk’d him on some legislation early on in 2006.
I cannot remember the particulars and googling Obama McCain legislation is not very helpful these days.
I *do* remember the very personal peevish McCain statement that the junior Senator from Illinois had better learn some respect if he wanted to accomplish anything in Washington.
I think it’s very personal to McCain.
“Do I really look like a guy with a plan? You know what I am? I’m a dog chasing cars.
I wouldn’t know what to do with one if I caught it. You know, I just do things.”
http://media.tumblr.com/ODFCJR…..o1_500.jpg
I was actually glad that Palin did as “well” as she did.
Had she been a complete embarrassment to the McCain campaign, she could have withdrawn from the campaign. As a result, the news cycles for the weeks of October 8th through the 17th would have been consumed with the distracting spectacle of the Republicans having to re-convene to select a new ticket.
The result would have been that beginning October 20th, John McCain’s campaign would have been: “McCain + Whoever: Now You CAN Vote For McCain” in whatever form that was expressed.
The Last two weeks of the presidential campaign would have been with a much better ticket than they have now, and that could have put the McCain campaign close enough to Obama’s numbers that the usual voting fraud would have covered the difference.
Since they’re stuck with this losing ticket, including a VP candidate who is considered successful because she doesn’t completely embarrass herself, the Republicans are going to have to engage in extraordinary, blatant voting fraud in order to win.
I am convinced that Palin was wearing a wire. Hell, Dubya wore one four years ago (remember the mystery bulge on his back?). The infrared transmission technology is there, so why not?
Seems like they did not report anything on their per diem income and why is a forty something old guy getting 50 – 100K from a BP retirement fund
I think that is a very good point.
The only folks that were won over by Palin are the absolute lunatics. Look at the gibberish spouted by Buchanan, by Katherine Lopez and Rich Lowry. Embarrassing, childish, cultish, totally removed from reality.
The more they cheer on Palin the more they push themselves away from much of the mainstream folks.
Go Palin go!

My 50 for eCAHNomics
and I realize this makes me appear nasty, but I’m loving this: a NFP organization called Velvet Revolution is offering a $100K reward for anyone coming forward with information tying Karl Rove and Republican computer specialist Mike Connell to using computers to manipulate the elections of 2000 and 2004. “…Connell was subpoenaed September 22 to testify under oath in a federal lawsuit in Ohio regarding election rigging and vote manipulation in past elections as well as the upcoming presidential race, according to Raw Story.
He has refused to testify and tried to quash his subpoena.
Connell ran the Florida Government computer network during the presidential election of 2000 and the Ohio Secretary of State election computers during the presidential election of 2004….Rove is also suspected of connections to Connell in the wake of a scandal surrounding the firing of eight U.S. attorneys for political reasons, The Free Press reported.
The GOP strategist allegedly sent emails that detailed plans to dismiss the attorneys using the e-mail accounts set up by Connell. Rove has also ignored a subpoena mandating he testify about his alleged role in the firings.”
Scratch a cheery, cutesy, “free market advocate,” “government is the problem” candidate and you’ll find modern fascism..the dream of Mussolini. No barrier between a completely uncontrolled corporate/government liason, which is the definition of fascism: the corporate state. I know this sounds alarmist and old fashioned to most young readers but you must get beyond the kind of framing that even liberals use. It is about keeping th eworker wages down, keeping us “hungry”, scared and ignorant. I’m old enough to remember the benefits of a unionized society, products made in the USA and when political debates were hosted by the League of Women Voters. We’ve come a long way..backward to the gilded age, moving rapidly a repeat of the 1929 crash. The disparity between ill-gotten wealth and the workers is similar. Vote Obama!
Listening to Palin in the debate was painful. She sounded like one of those people who try to use “big words” to sound smart but don’t really understand what they are saying. If that was rehearsed and memorized, holy crap! I had trouble figuring out her point.
Will McShame have the same debate flow chart as Palin
http://www.scholarsandrogues.c…..low-chart/
Thanks. I didn’t look at the article carefully.
and she didn’t claim per diam income, her staff claims it’s not taxable, I find that claim hard to believe
It was on campaign ethics reform, interestingly enough. http://blog.washingtonpost.com…..ain_v.html
I’m watching this story too and thanks for the heads up on the 100 grand reward.
I mentioned a few days ago, palin has an insecurity problem, when she realizes she doesn’t know something she can’t stop talking
I tend to agree. Someone said they saw something in her right ear, which was the less visible to the camera.
AMEN!
For me, that’s her most endearing quality. I just luv me some Sarah when she dissolves into a puddle of meaningless babble.
again reminding me of a teenager
My boyfriend flys a lot for his job (over 140K this year) and gets upgraded to first class frequently…… he has some really interesting conversations with republican business people about the economy, BushCo and the election…… even this class of Repugs are not happy…… things are not going well even for them….. and unhappy at how poorly the government functions…..
Elmore’s argument for Obama is an interesting slant…… he starts with don’t look at votes or policies…… look how Obama runs things……. when O was a community organizer he started with a staff of 3 and budget of $35K and in three years it grew to staff of 144 and budget of $400K of a wildly successful faith based program…. OR now that Obama is running a 50 state campaign…… thousands of emloyees and even more volunteers …… it runs like clock works and in the black……… Elmore says……. he wants that same management style to run our government …… THAT is what America needs…… Elmore says you can see their wheels turning and looking at this with a different paradigm…… one hard core McCain supporter at the Phoenix airport was looking at this election in a different way…….
Think of it as a job interview vs. popularity contest…….
With the end of the veep debate, america will be mercifully spared further contact with Sarah Palin..
Two tracking polls out already show a one point Obama bump in one and no change in the other…
This abortion of a “debate” will move into the dust of history.
For the record, Palin was an idiot.
All I ask before I die is to see at least *one* of these *ssholes put UNDER the forkin’ jail for blowing off his/her subpoena. :-(
Can’t be sure, but that could be Alaskan statute that the state executive, judicial and legislative branches per diems are tax-exempt. Hell, they make the laws and can pretty much do anything they want wrt their compensation. I believe it’s like that in IL where I live. Don’t quote me on that, though.
And still is.
The IRS really doesn’t care what the Alaska legislature says on the matter.
rwcole!
great to “see” you.
Sarah Palin is now entering her Kim Jong Il phase. She’ll only be seem at large public events in front of throngs of adoring fans.
-G
P.S. Apparently he showed up at an event in the last day.
seen….Need more coffee.
-G
Some Canuck (I dunno who … *g*) calls it the McCain/
PalinFlailin’ ticket …Right. Tax-exempt on their state taxes, not their federal. I sit corrected. :)
My favorite so far is: McCain + Palin = McPain.
I was just looking at the picture up top (which makes me ill) and was thinking that we need to start a photo album – something like Hugh’s list – and collect the best, or worse, so that we can look at them and laugh for years to come. We could, of course, begin with The Kiss.
Palin is not an idiot. She is ignorant, naive, and way too cute. All of these can be corrected with more training. She is a dangerous, crackpot religious looney and she wants this job really, really bad.
ROFL … Excellent !
They do not have state income taxes in Alaska, 80% of state revenue comes from Oil and gas revenue the remainder from other business revenue.
Don’t think you could ever get rid of that weird accent. Haven’t heard anything like it before.
Didja see HoJo after the debate, gushing over McCain/Palin ? I think he’s trying to make Dubya jealous …
Palin is a cross between Peter Sellers in Zelig and Eliza Doolittle.(Pygmalion)
Don’t add gravitas to her regurgitation of talking points–many beyond her comprehension. Her response to the question about VP power and whether the post is in the legislative branch or executive is classic Zelig– a generality hoping to seem informed but revealing her hopeless lack of knowledge.
It’s insulting that the repubs think she is adequate, but then they gave us the current clueless executive.
I have. On really bad children’s TV shows.
I don’t ever watch HoJo. I do have my standards. :) Sickening little man.
Her accent is Northern Minnesota squared. Hey, you never saw My Fair Lady?
my favorite, (owning to the fact that I am often verbose) would be;
mcstick in the butt you’re a lying sac of dog meat willing to do anyhting and say anyhting, hire anyone and trash this country to become president”
it doesn’t flow but that’s my favorite so far
That’s really interesting. I hadn’t read about tha aspect of Obama before. Thanks for pointing it out.
Damn! What am I doing here in the Midwest?? Oh right, I’d have Caribou Barbie for a Gov and the Republican delegation representing me. I’ll stick with Durbin and Obama for now, thank you very much!
So, in essence, the per diems were ‘free money’?
I don’t think it was so much her accent as her manner of delivery … Tweety nailed it ! Had she slowed down and added some inflection, she could have sounded warm and intelligent … why yes, I am having Coffee with Bailey’s, how ever did you know ?
How much of a factor will Brokaw’s McCain bias be in the next debate?
For me, that’s her most endearing quality. I just luv me some Sarah when she dissolves into a puddle of meaningless babble.
Word Salad.
It really is a way to pitch against type.
Great logic.
-G
Thanks
Good to see you too.
liarman and michell malikkkan had the exact same pros, they were issued talking points and don’t know how turn them into their own words
Is Palin really going to Michigan to tour the auto plants? If she does, her campaign will need to pay people to pose as a friendly audience. There is no way she can go in cold turkey. Maybe the campaign is bullshitting again as usual.
That was mentioned often during the nomination race, esp. contrasting his management style to HRC …
OT: Hi PW. In last night’s LLN Thread, there were a couple of items about Minnesota. I’d be interested your take, if you’d care to comment on them:
– http://firedoglake.com/2008/10…..nt-1665768
I said a while ago when McCain began running some of his gratuitously negative and false ads against Obama that his internal polling must show him doing horribly.
Somehow I missed that.
Alaska is the most socialist state in the country. Each resident gets over $3K this year from a fund set up in 1976 that is funded by oil and gas royalties
I’m sure the audience will flay Brokaw if he tries to demean BO
Right on, Elmore!
How much of a factor will Brokaw’s McCain bias be in the next debate?
The next one is a town-hall format, with questions coming (ostensibly) from the audience, so Brokaw should be at least mostly neutered…
Peter Sellers in “Being There”.
Sarah Palin is a neocon infomercial. Pathetic.
Thank goodness that’s behind us and we can (hopefully) unite to send the NeoCons packing …
There’s a Marine doing morale building to some recruits on cspan2. Do they really talk that way? Seems beyond bizarre to me.

The Duality of Man
The lead story in the election is whether McCain- the St Peter in the gooper gospels- will deny Jesus George three times before the cock crows
If he does, he has a chance to pick up swing voters, but he’ll lose the support of the radical gooper faithful
What’s an ancient fascist to do?
Raven !
Like McNasty, Brokaw’s age is beginning to make him slip. Olbermann redirected a potentially long-winded Brokaw Republican diatribe, by complimenting him as a wise old sage. Brokaw took the bait and used up his time talking about himself.
You betcha.
Once this election is over, and , after she’s been recalled in Alaska, I see a great future for her as a wrestling girl.
Kay !
Her manner of delivery was essentially like an infomercial … fast talking so ou don’t take time to think about what she’s said … however, this is a TiVo world …
loved it!
Mud wrestling? Wet T-shirts?
My mental image of Sarah’s sport is roller derby.
Ack, now!!! it is not northern Minnesota, it is not Fargo. It is a total personal parody of folksy.
I really don’t think the fundies like him too much and apparently his fellow Senators detest him. Doubt the man has any true friends.
LOL … I was thinking she’d be auctioning Cattle … to Pig Farmers …
Hey gang! Sorry I’m late — I thought I was scheduled for 8:30 FDL.

On further thought, you point exactly to my puzzlement. I guess I thought that Marines talked that way only in movies. Now I see a real one doing it on cspan2. It’s creepy to see life resembling a movie. FYI, the only Marine I’ve ever talked to was a friend of my son, and he of course did not talk that way during dinner. He looked the part, though.
yes, the town hall format, I know, but how much control does Brokaw have over which question/ers are chosen?
Had to bail on FMJ when it came out. Still can’t watch any of them.
I’m off to canvass for Obama. bbl
And thousands of North American men sprout wood at the thought of her in a thong….
Betsy !
How’re you feeling ?
Have fun!
not bad. how are you?
Palin was originally from Ideeho as I recall, but became an Alaskan at an early age.
The other night, I was zapping, I came upon a wrestling show. They now have these modified models who wrestle a bit, but, are mostly there to make sure that any man understands where a woman stands…
But, I have to say that the roller derby image is quite satisfying.
Hope all is well with you R.
it is not Fargo.
It does sound like Frances McDormand in the movie Fargo though.
dunno – good question though.
Things going well. And you?
I forsee a chain of tanning salons and a cable shopping network featuring local jewelry, snow machines and professional wear for the upwardly mobile Alaskan woman.

FMJ came out after Platoon, which stole all the thunder … esp. Willem Dafoe’s final scene.
From my cousins’ stories, FMJ was Vietnam … is that your take, Raven ?
On Letterman, Brian Williams said that McCain is a good hang! When you get on the bus and unwind and relax with him off the record, McCain is a good hang. Obama too – also a good hang (not as good a hang as McCain by placement in the diatribe).
Viewing note: saw a teaser this a.m. that Larry King guests this week will be Michelle Obama, Sarah Palin. McCain team is putting Sarah out like a spouse, not a running mate.
How can any guy be attracted to such a grating voice? You could hear me scream, running away…
Not to mention the revenues from the “SooEE” lipstick.
I’ll be e- mailing you in a day or two … some promising alternative therapy, if you’re interested …
Brian Williams is not as kewl as he thinks he is.
Laura Bush sez she & W will probably write books after they leave office. Jenna sez she uses comic books to get the little boys in her class interested in reading. I guess W’s book will fall into that category.
“What goes well with an AK-47 ? Why this lovely Kevlar Evening Dress … “
Life plows on slowly, got my first cd cover pic published a couple weeks back. Proud of that. Nice to see you well.

perhaps they’re watching with the sound turned off.
Have you ever seen the crowds at WWE/RAW ?
Brian Williams said that Tim Russert was True North. Whenever you had a question you would consult the master Russert.
Later, Williams said that he grew up in New Jersey with a view of the lights atop the Twin Towers. The Towers were William’s True North.
Do you have a link?
I’ll start saving my money “cause I want to rush right out and buy Pinhead’s book. The mind boggles.
I’m going to research it thoroughly but I’ve known the Doctors for 13 years … more in the e-mail …
Platoon is the only one I watched start to finish. After leaving the theatre I tried to light a smoke and some guy had to light it for me I was shaking so hard. Went to my fave watering hole and Nancy the barkeep put a double in front of me and said, “You must need this, you’re white as a sheet.” I couldn’t remember driving from the theater to the Beach Pub.
Let us not forget the newly-popular Sarahcudah Crossbow Pairs well with the bear tooth chandalier earrings featured last hour. hehehe
Death has been kind to Tim Russert, his IQ has increased 50% since his death.
I’ve long thought Rethugs can’t lose.
When they win, the (personal) stealing accelerates; when they lose, the economy as a whole gets better, you know, like how a rising tide lifts all boats.
So either way, they’re good.
The SUSA poll is crap — their internals are a joke, as Minnesotans told Nate Silver. (It has Coleman beating Franken by ten, when that’s simply not the case.) It’s also countered by the latest Rasmussen poll which shows Obama well into the double digits over McCain (and rememember, Ras is a GOP pollster). But if it makes McCain waste money in Minnesota, that’s OK.
Yea, but in Dubya’s comic books, Superman gets it for trying to save reg’lar folk …
Sometimes I crack myself up….sometimes not so much. :)
Laura Bush sez she & W will probably write books after they leave office
Laura’s – “Divorce – Don’t Wait as Long as I Did”
W’s – “Seemed Like a Good Idea at The Time”
Will W’s come with or without crayons? Or will it be “ghost” written and he’ll have someone else do the stick figures?
She would have done well in the silent movie era.
After my cousins (U.S. Army) got back, they suffered for years with drug/alcohol addiction without real help from the Gov’t … which is why it p*sses me off when both sides talk about supporting the troops …
aaakkk.
Would love to read that one.
Has Mccain ever handled confrontation of any kind smoothly? This really could be his undoing. I just don’t see Mccain finding anything to feel good about right now. It will be that much harder for him to get out of the emotional rut. Even smiles look strained.
Mary !
I was waiting for you to respond to Balrog’s comment @ 1 … *g*
You and Raven have my deepest gratitude and sympathy…ALWAYS!
All govts always talk about supporting the troops, and never do. The GI Bill after WWII is the only exception I can think of.
Brokaw seems to slur his words thus sounding drunk or brain-damaged.
Basic dishonesty through out his life has caused his spirit to go south. The man is not an adult. He is a spoiled child who has had considerable misfortune. This makes him dangerous and mean. He hates women and minorities. He hates Barack.
Laura – “Vehicular Homicide for Dummies … the threat that kept Dubya in line”
GWB – “Is your Children now ?”
I’d say McCain’s “smiles” look more like grimmaces. And I’ve seen several quips of him on TV with friendly anchors when he just can’t stop his nervous laugh. He’s a wreck.
I have been trying to restrain myself with the c.c. comments. But SP is a total c.c.
I think it might help if they unwired his jaw for this job.
((( Vets )))
May you get a Leader worthy of your sacrifice …
Liberace like winks. Perfect.
You betcha, by golly.
I was tempted to reply to Balrog with, “I despise c.cars !”
Sorry for the edit but felt it needed a small fix.
McBush was making a new sound yesterday that cannot be translated phonetically as far as I can see….He was sayin “How bout that Sarah Palin? HGKKKK HGKKKK! The sound was a bit like century old mucus bein cleared from a partially collapsed lung.
That’ll be the day.
I know Brother, but I’ll keep hoping for it …
Hey, PW. Thanks for that clarification.
ROFL … you’re in fine form as always …
His days are numbered. He looks very ill to me.
The McCain ads have hit the airwaves here in Arizona…… Yepers….. McCain has had to defend his own home state…… it is tightening and the latest polls here puts it within 5% and within the margin of error …..
It is interesting how the Repugs are getting pounded on their no vote for SCHIP and Vet issues here…… big Vet population……
Luckily for the Repubs, they have Romney & Giuliani waiting in the wings …
This Tuesday’s town hall style debate is another situation where McCain’s resentment and angry temperament gets exposed. Forced acknowledgment of Obama’s presence will likely be heightened with this format compared to the first debate.
Obama going across the aisle on the Senate floor this week to face an irritated McCain and to shake his hand tells me Obama is not afraid to get in Mccain’s head. That must be even more unnerving for Mccain who at some level knows he has to contain himself.
How comforting.
Good Day, pups!

Stock Market Closes Below Monday Low: So Why Aren’t All the Pundits Screaming?
Keith showed that clip last night and ended with one of those “whatever the he!! ya call ‘em” sounds. The collapsed lung serves very nicely for a description.
We are at an interesting juncture in the election where some decisions need to be made:
Corporations need to decide whether they should support the losing team and earn the enmity of the winners- or should they put their bundle on the winning ponies
The RNC needs to decide how much of their war chest to dump on the apparent losing McCain and Chick team and how much to funnel into races that provide better chances for victory.
The McCain team is sayin that they pulled out of Michigan because of the limitations of federal financing- but they could have encouraged the RNC to send dough to the state—that this didn’t happen speaks volumes.
McCrazy, be careful what you wish for. You just might get it. [Town Hall format debate.]
Compatriots of sensitivity, light and the tight ass tap dance of the gop.
Josh posted about it on TPM’s front page this morning
You caught that, too?
It was hilarious! Even KO cracked on it.
My wife & and I almost keeled over from laughing at that clip.
He said it three times!
Their whole campaign is a circlin’ the drain.
Thankfully.
McC is really going to have a hard time letting go. Given his rather tenuous hold on reality he probably won’t make a concession speech but will announce his candidacy for 2012.
You got mail.
Bonjour Betsy.
Petro, Hammill in hamilton, oct 17…
This guy is as smooth as a baby’s behind.
When everyone was freaking out after the Palin pick, he was cool as a cucumber; didn’t change a thing.
“He’s not emotional enough, he’s not connecting with white women, blue collar working stiffs, old people, dwarfs, Quakers, you name it!” Arrrggh!
Just stayed on message, kept building his organization and making his appearances.
Now, he’s kinda managing the game like Tiger Woods does when he has a lead; don’t take crazy chances, just keep making pars on into the clubhouse.
****Wing Nut Alert****
Was about to press ’send’ right when the latest McPalin ad came up!
They’re breaking out the good stuff now; the ad has Resko, Ayers & Rev. Wright.
Brought to you by the Judicial Confirmation Network.
Because you just can’t trust a scary black guy to nominate fine upstanding white guys like Alito & Roberts.
I have taken the time to read the over 400 pages of the bill- most of which is the “sweetener” bills grafted on to get the votes of the Congress people. While as a mental health professional, I applaud the passage -at last- of the paraty bill, the cost of 700 billion with not one dollar in relief for the homeowner, the cost was too high. Barak and others have demonstrated the moral failure that has brought us to have such low respect for the Democratic Party. We lie as much as the Republicans, we just lie to ourselves. Yes we have to vote for Barak to keep McCain away from the button and the Supream court nominations, but we can only do so with grief in our hearts and our nose firmly held with both hands.

Looking Up At Nixon
Here’s the big news in Minnesota.
Franken Moves Big Above Coleman
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune has been right in line with the other respected pollsters in the state, AND has a very large sample size. They are careful to survey the proper mix of gender, age, and geographical groups. The SUSA poll is screwy.
And the kicker in the MST poll is that they always ask questions about the Presidential race and release them later (usually on a Sunday). But they give a “tell” in the article on Franken. They say that Franken is “riding the coattails” of Obama, which indicates that Obama has an even greater lead over McCain than Franken’s 6 point lead over Coleman.
And then go down to the people stating their party preferences. 16% lead by the Democrats over the Republicans! That’s not “weighting”, that is what the people in the poll actually responded!
Remember after September 11 when we were all looking at the stuff that was important to us on September 10 and suddenly it all looked foolish and trivial?
That is happening today.
This big economic meltdown is very much like a slow motion 9/11. The people seem to get that. I think Obama/Biden seem to get that. The only people who don’t seem to get it are the McCain campaign and a bunch of media pundits who still think it is all about personality.
They can all scratch their heads after the election. I’m fine with that.
